IPhone 5c iOS 8 error in the middle of updating

I'm updating my iPhone through iTunes on my iMac. I clicked update then left for a while to do homework and when I came back, my phone was on the screen with the Apple logo and loading bar showing it's updating, but on iTunes it had an "Unknown Error". Should I be worried that my phone is going to be stuck like this? The loading bar is almost at the end, but has not moved in almost 40 minutes. My phone is still plugged into the computer but is not registered on iTunes. Please help!

The same exact thing happened to me today. But don't worry i have the answer! here is what i did.
I was trying to update my iPhone 5 with my macbook pro. and when it was almost done i had the same error as you. SO then i held the home button and plugged it into my mac and made it go to recovery mode basically forcing it to have to restore. But when i was trying to restore it it kept saying error iPhone not found.
So what i did was i plugged my phone into my roommates windows computer and it worked perfectly and started right up after the factory restore. When it asked how you want to set up phone (as new iPhone or backup just hit cancel) And to get all my stuff back i then plugged it into my macbook again and restored it to the backup it did when i initially plugged it in before trying to update.
As of right now my phone is using ios8 as well as it is currently downloading all of my apps and contacts back!

When it restarted it turned the blue again. i took it off the charger immediantly because i didnt want it getting as hot as it was before. ive tried every way i know how to fix it but not putting it in the computer because i dont want it to ruin the computer. Please help because i really dont want to get a new ipod. Ive read a lot about how to fix it here on apple but there all the same answer and it still doesnt work. Please respond ASAP! thank you! i could really use your help right now!

First see if placing the iPod in Recovery Mode will allow a restore.
Next try DFU mode and restore.

If you have a backup of your information on your computer, I would suggest putting your phone into recovery mode, by holding down the home key and keeping it held down while you connect it by usb into your computer with itunes running. Keep the home button held down until it indicates recovery mode, and proceed with the restore.

First try forcing it to shut down: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds.
If you don't get anywhere, restoring it is the next step:
Disconnect the USB cable from the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.If you cannot turn off the device using the slider, press and hold the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time. When the device turns off, release only the Sleep/Wake button.
Continue pressing and holding the Home button while you reconnect the USB cable to the device. The device should turn on.
Note: If you see the "low battery" screen, let the device charge for at least ten minutes to ensure that the battery has some charge, and then start with step 2 again.
Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen. When this screen appears (iTunes icon and USB connector)release the Home button.
If necessary, open iTunes. You should see the "recovery mode" alert ("iTunes has detected a phone in recovery mode").
Use iTunes to restore the device.
If you do not see the "Connect to iTunes" screen, try these steps again. If you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen but the device does not appear in iTunes, see this article and its related links.

I would say that you would want to look into the "Exchange Mode" for GMail. That would allow your iPhone to sync calendars, contacts and email with GMail just fine. Doing the same with your outlook should also then sync those same with your PC using Outlook. I've done teh iPhone side of this, but I since I don't run Lookout for my email client, I'm not sure how that will work on the PC side.
