IPhone empties trash although 'Deleted Messages, Remove' Set to 'Never'
Hi,
My iPhone is set to 'Never' remove deleted messages but it seems to empty my trash daily.
If I set it to 'After one month' then it doesn't delete everything immediately, can anyone help? (It's running version 1.1.1)

I am connecting using IMAP, to my own mail server (Mac OS Server 10.4, fully updated) running on a Mac Mini G4.
Mail.app on my MacBook Pro (and other Macs) connect flawlessly and move deleted email to my Trash folder. I have Mail.app on all these machines set to 'Never delete trash'. I have therefore managed to maintain an extensive history of all my deleted email in my Trash folder without any problems.
However, the iPhone seems to move deleted Mail to the trash folder (correctly) but then deletes everything older than (roughly) one day old, even though "Deleted Messages" is set to "Remove Never".
If I set "Deleted Messages" to "After one month" they are not deleted immediately, I am unsure if they are then deleted after a month.
Any suggestions?

Does "Deleted Messages - Remove" on iPhone and iPad refer to the server, or just the device?
I have been trying to understand the settings in iOS devices in mail apps "Deleted Messages - Remove" and the selection of time including never. Does this refer to deleting from the severs - wherever/whomever they are - or from the device itself. This appears in the advance settings in mail for pop accounts.
If never is selected, is that so the sever holds it for the computer's mail client to see (albeit as unread) and trash it then (where it could be on sever forever if desired) or does that mean it will not be removed it from the iPhone or iPad until trashed and therefore not seen by one's other devices/computer.
Be gentle - this is my first question.Your scores will not sync. You will have "different scores' on each device. And say if the game has different levels that you have to unlock, your progress on one device will not sync to the other.

How do I empty trash after deleting music, apps and photos from my iPhone to make more room for upgrading to iOS 8.1? It says I don't have enough room to upgrade so I have deleted some of everything but do not see an improvement in my storage space. Help?
No need to empty anything.
You can update by connecting your phone to iTunes on your computer. This way you bypass the space limitations.

Deleted messages remove after one day (one week, one month) not working
Has anyone noticed that since the upgrade to iOS 7 automatic email cleanup does not seem to be working?
I have an IMAP email account set up with the following setting: Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars, [then tap the email account in question] > Account > Advanced > Deleted Messages Remove > After one week
I have had that configuration on my iPhone and iPad for a very long time, and it always deleted everything out of my deleted messages folder (which, on my system, is called Trash) that was older than one week. It would do this no matter when the message was actually deleted, and no matter whether I deleted it on my iPhone, my iPad, on a computer using Outlook, or through a web interface. (It actually would have been nice to retain a message I had just deleted for the one-week period in case I changed my mind; instead the way it worked was if I deleted a message that was received months ago, it would be removed from Trash almost right away. But it worked consistently.)
Now, since iOS 7, it does not appear to be cleaning out that folder at all. Has anyone else noticed this?
I'm not sure if it's not removing any messages, or if it's just not removing messages I delete on another platform (like Outlook). So today I've done a test with a specific message that I will watch over the next little while to see how it works. But in the meantime I thought I'd ask if anyone else has noticed this, and if there is a solution.Really nobody?
Is this working properly for people? It's not working for me on either my IMAP account or on an iCloud email accout, so I think iOS 7 broke something here. I've submitted a bug report on the feedback form, but it would be nice to know I'm not alone. -
My iphone voicemail won't delete messages.
My iPhone 5s will not delete voice mail messages.
This has been discussed on many threads in this forum. Call into your voice mail service and remove them from there.

Massive iPhoto Library Problems: cannot empty trash or delete photos
I did something really stupid: imported another iPhoto library into my existing one. The latter is now approx 200 GB -- and I think potentially half of it consists of duplicate photos. (I had about 30GB and then imported about 70GB and was shocked to find a new total of double what I expected!)
I have Duplicate Annihilator and I'm thinking of using it to delete the duplicates.
However, I'm unsure whether to use DA yet -- or even at all. This is because iPhoto currently will not let me: (1) delete any photos or (2) empty the (very small) iPhotos trash. If I presist and repreatedly try to empty the trash or delete a photo it finally crashes.
Should I fix the deleting/crashing problem first, before using DA? Or should I not even use DA at all but use a Time Machine backup to restore my original library and then import the other library properly (using perhaps iPhoto Library Manager)?
Basically, I just want to get rid of those tens of thousands of duplicates and reduce the librarty to what should be its genuine (non-duplicated) size of approx 100GB.
Any advice greatly appreciated.

PS. I forgot to add that the rebarbative "Faces" is of course running and I can't figure out how to stop it trying to match 10, 000+ faces. I suppose it could be causing or adding to the problem.

TS2755 My iPhone 4S will not delete messages
When attempting to delete messages my phone will not let me... When I hit "edit" then click on the "-" tab .. The "delete" tab will appear for a second then disappear... Not giving me time to delete the message... How can thus be fixed ?
Swipe message right to left delete or archive box should come up. If you want to mass delete try watching http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fKa-KFjUIGE If messages are on a server like gmail or yahoomail you may have to go there and delete or the messages will come back.

IPhone 5 won't delete messages
I have an iPhone 5 (iOS 7.1.2)
Recently I've been trying to delete iMessage threads because they contain a year to a couple months worth of text messages. Initially the thread disappears, but I think it causes the Messaging app to crash because when I open it I see an empty inbox, and I don't receive messages people send. I tried restarting my phone and everything goes back to normal. All my threads appear in my messages including the ones I tried deleting and i receive messages people sent previously only after I restart my phone. This has been happening every time I try to delete text threads and I'm not sure how to make it stop happeningHi kat_seen,
Since this is not normal behavior, and you have already tried resetting / restarting the iPhone, at this point I would suggest doing a restore of the iPhone. See the directions in this article -

IPhone Mail won't delete messages
My iPhone 4 is showing several e-mails sent in 1969 by No Sender, and I can't delete them! They are multiplying! Help!
I still don't know the source of the problem, but after many deletions of the message in question, which persisted in my Inbox, I tried re-booting the iPhone. This removed it from the Inbox, and I also was able to remove it from Trash. FYI.

Every time I try to delete my messages, I will delete and then restart the app or it won't work. When I restart the app, it takes me to an empty message screen and then will completely freeze. My phone will vibrate like I am receiving messages, but nothing shows up on my phone. Recovering the phone is not working, as the computer no longer recognizes the phone as a device.

If your Messages app is still behaving unexpectedly, then based on the symptoms you are describing I would troubleshoot the software by first quitting the running apps on the device:
iOS: Force an app to close
Double-click the Home button.
Swipe left or right until you have located the app you wish to close.
Swipe the app up to close it.
When you have done that restart the device and test the issue again:
iOS: Turning off and on (restarting) and resetting

TS3899 iPhone/iPad: Can't Delete Messages in Hotmail Account
Hotmail Account Only:
When deleting an e-mail message in my Hotmail account from both my iPad and iPhone the messages delete on both devices but do not delete in my Hotmail account. Retrieving messages works fine as does deleting directly from my Hotmail account as well as from Mail on my Macbook Air. Deleting from several other e-mail accounts on my iPhone/iPad also works fine.
Any help would be appreciated.

RobIf I have read correctly, I have Solved this issue. with ios 7. All you have to do is delete your account in your iphone and ipad and then re add the account through outlook option in your iphone/ipad. this will automatically delete any emails from any where. for example, if you delete from the iphone it will delete from the main server and the ipad, and if you do it in the server it will also update your iphone and ipad.

I have an iPhone 4s, I noticed that I have 5GB worth of messages, I tried to delete them but my phone went all glitchy and in the end I had to turn my phone off and all the messages were still there once back on! Also I don't want to restore my phone I I for have too!
I recently spoke to someone from Apple support, and here's what I gathered:
"Older" phones (read: anything iPhone 4s or older?) sometimes have trouble keeping up with the processing demands of the newest software. When deleting threads with a lot of media (photos, videos, etc), it can take a lot of processing to successfully delete. What this support tech suggested was picking some of the bigger threads at night before you go to bed, deleting them, and then leaving the phone alone-- and plugged in-- overnight to give it enough time to delete everything. He suggested not even pressing the lock button; just leave it to process (though I imagine the screen will lock on its own anyway).
Not sure if it works yet since I just spoke to him, but it's the closest thing I've got to a solution! -
Iphone registered to itunes; photos/messages removed
i connected my newish iphone 4s to my PC. itunes came up and asked if i wanted to register and merge it with the files from my old smartphone. i agreed, and now the photos/messages that were on my iphone are gone. is there a way to recover them?
No.
You chose to transfer the backup for another iPhone or iOS device that has been synced with iTunes on the same computer. Messages and photos/videos on the Camera Roll are included with the backup for the device which replaced this data on your new iPhone. The other choice was set up the new iPhone as a new iPhone. Had you chosen this, the data would not have been lost.
This is designed to be done with a new iPhone right away - not days, weeks, or months later. -
Unable to empty trash - error 8003 message
On my Mac Pro with Snow Leopard I recently trashed a number of items and then while attempting to empty the trash it loaded and then stopped and I got the following message:
"The operation can't be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error -8003)" and then it gave me a choice to Stop or Continue. I tried each of these to no avail. I then opened the trash file and attempted to empty each file or folder individually but all it would do was go back to loading all the trash and give me the same message again. I attempted to find error 8003 but could not locate it. Any Suggestions,

Why are you doing that? That's unnecessary. Just do a regular erase, which shouldn't take more than a few minutes max. You don't need to write over everything.
What if I just ejected the time machine, would I be able to empty the trash then?
No. The stuff is destroyed now anyway, since you've already started overwriting it. There's no trash to be emptied anymore. You have to erase it somehow, but overwriting is overkill.
However, even if this wasn't the case, ejecting and then reconnecting will not change anything about the ability to empty the trash. -
When setting up new accounts in Mail.app, I generally remember to set the "Permanently erase deleted messages when:" setting to "Never", in contrast to its harsh default 1-month setting.
When I first switched to a Mac years ago (probably around the time of Leopard, or one before), I didn't know of this setting, as it's somewhat buried and not part of the add new account "walkthrough", and I permanently lost serious business mail on a self-hosted mail server, due to this, in my opinion, really stupid default setting.
At any rate, as I said, I usually remember to change this, but I recently synched accounts via iCloud to a new machine (a work machine), and for whatever reason, the setting didn't take on one account (just one account; despite being set to "never" on the primary mac from which things sync). Same problem all over again.
So, Is there a way I can simply change the default, in the system, so that whenever a new account is created, Mail.app sets the default "erase messages when" time to "Never"?
I need to duplicate Gmail (archiving) functionality and thus far this is the best way I have of going about it; leaving those messages in trash on my regular old everyday IMAP servers.
I did run into this solution – http://support.apple.com/kb/TA22283, though it was for Mail.app in OSX 10.2 (so things have changed now), but I'm willing to bet there is a similar command, more up to date, that might do something similar? I'd like to run such a command on all of my machines so that ALL new mail accounts created are set to NEVER permanently auto-empty the trash–that should be done when I chose, and when I chose only.Open Mail preferences, click on the Accounts icon in the toolbar then select your mail account, click on the Mailbox Behaviours tab on the right. Set the dropdown menu at the bottom for the Never option.
However, you cannot change the default options set for a newly created account.
