IPod is DOA

OK...So I went on a train trip with my trusty side kick and used all his juice. Woke up in the morn in SLC and he turned on for 2.3 seconds and then went blank. NO a big deal I thought. Picked up a car to drive back to CO. tried to charge in the car with usb 12volt adapter. Now he (20g click wheel) wont turn on, take a charge or respond at all. tried reset. reset with power. Toggle hold and press menu and select. toggle hold press menu and play. Tried power from computer usb. tried power from powered usb hub. tried power from usb wall adapter. Tried power from fire wire wall adapter. NOT Working. Been through support pages, FAQ and the forum and this thing will not respond. About to go Johnny 5 on it and dissasemble. Any help before I freak out and permanatly repair it with a brick wall. Namaste
BP

Well after some futzing and more pain...I got it to come back. I opened it up and volt tested the battery. Got 1.2 volts from red and white wires on harness and 4.2x from red and black leads on harness. plugged back in harness and put it back together. plugged it into firewire wall adapter and OHAHhhh. Still charging it. Wondering if i should update it now that its back. Had a similar problem months ago and fixed that wwith basic reset from Ipod 101 page. I'm happy with it, but still ****** at apple over my wife's macbook pro 15in. Battery problems, overheating, logicboard issues and no decent help or aknowledgement from apple that these hings should have been released after all the power issues were worked out.

  • Brand new iPod shuffle DOA

I bought a shuffle plugged it in to a proper USB port, mounted the unit on the dock and nothing. No light, no nothing. I'm thinking it's dead. Does it need to charge for a while or something?
    Thanks, -E

Hmmm. Four hours have passed since your first message. I would think that your shuffle should be charged. If you are not getting any reaction from it, I would make sure that you have it hooked up to a proper USB port. It needs to be a USB 2.0. If you have an older computer (pre 2004) it might not have a USB 2.0 port. That port is "charged" to provide enough power to charge your iPod. If you are sure that you have the 2.0, I would look at the troubleshooting section, and try to "reboot" it. If that still doesn't work, you might need to return it to the place you purchased it. Good luck.

  • 30gb Ipod video, DOA

so i used this new ipod for about 3 days and then all of the sudden it doesnt work. i left it plugged into my computer over night, and when i woke up in the morning, the screen was black, and it no longer responds to being plugged into the computer, pushing center + menu, or trying to turn it on/off, anyone ever hear of anything like this? i tried plugging it into my friends macbook, and that didnt recognize it either, and i tried a different interface cable too, but that didnt do anything, is it time to go to the local apple store?!?

You may need to reset it.
Put the hold switch to the OFF/White position. Now toggle it ON/orange then back off again. Then press and hold both the MENU and center buttons on the iPod and hold them for a good 15 seconds or so. Your iPod should reboot starting with the Apple Logo screen.
If it doesn't work the first time, give it a second or third go. Sometimes it takes a few/several tries.
See this thread as an example of what I mean by needing to try it many times...

  • IPod Touch DOA??

My touch won't play any songs purchased from iTunes for some reason. I see everything on the touch but they won't play at all. I push the play button and it goes back to the stop/pause button. After a full reset of the touch, it was working fine. But now, I'm having the same issues again with it not playing the puchased songs. My computer and songs are all authorized. Is anyone else having this issue?? Maybe I need to return? Have never had an issue before with any Apple product. Thanks for any advice.

Yep - turns out that it was defective and the store did a return without even blinking. Wonderful service.

  • ITunes 7 and iPod

Now that I've installed iTunes 7, my iPod will update/sync whenever I plug it in, but then ejects itself when it's done. i can't make any changes to the syncing, it says "Waiting For iPod" then "iPod Couldn't Be Found". It's not on the desktop, but is still there on the side in iTunes. I also had a problem when it was first installed where my iPod wouldn't play anything, but I just restored it and re-updated it, that's not a problem anymore. I don't have any other problems, although I hear of a bunch of them. Why won't apple wait to release programs? Why do they jump the gun and ruin everyone's music? How can I fix my iPod to iTunes connection?

The key statement in your message is "I updated my iTunes"... Read through some of the other form messages and you'll find that you are NOT the only one. My iPod is DOA until Apple gets off their a** and issues a patch.
I wish they'd at least address the problem.... I'm a loyal Mac fan, and I have faith in them. How 'bout a "We know about this and we're working on it?"

  • New to Apple, I think my ipod touch is doa

    Hello all
First of all, I would just like to say I am new to Apple and the discussion forums so hello to all!
Unfortunately, my main reason for joining isn't a positive one. I have received an 1st gen 8gb ipod touch from an upgrade offer with a mobile phone network (UK). After a long wait and several complaints to them, they finally sent me the ipod. However, I think the device is dead on arrival.
When I first unboxed it, I did the usual thing: Download iTunes, connect the device to my computer. iTunes informed me that the device was in "recovery mode" and that I must "restore" first to use the iPod. This is where the problem is, the restore process does not complete. I get an "1604" error.
I went to an Apple store, where a kind member of staff attempted to get me started with the device only to encounter the same problem. He pointed out to me that on the same page as the "restore" button in iTunes, the ipod information does not state the device capacity and other information which he found wierd. Could this be clue to whats going on?
The mobile phone network don't want anything to do with my problem as it was a promotional offer, also they no longer have stock of the device and the new ipod is out now. They insist I should take up my problem with apple.
Has anyone had experience with this? Maybe there is someone out there who has also had a doa device. Any advice is much appreciated. What are my options? Am I able to have this device repaired or replaced?
    Many thanks in advance
    -J

    Typical phone service.
Not the 1604, this will lead to error (6).
Had this while trying to update to 2.0.
Congradualations to your phone company for sending you an iPod with an overloaded hardriive incapable of handling a software too advanced for it.

  • DOA iPod Mini

I've just taken delivery of my new iPod Mini and the thing just won't work! Have followed all the Help Sheets, videos and even installed it on a Laptop (which got a little further than on my Tower - could see the iPod in iTunes but unable to get any music onto it). Multiple resets and downloading of latest software make no difference (even went into "Disk Mode" to no avail). At one point on my Tower I got the error "Firmware update failure: Disk write error". Now I just get the Folder and ! or the "Do not disconnect" sign. I'm staring defeat in the eyes. Anyone got any new ideas before I take it back to the Apple Store?

Christopher, Hi and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Your Problem Is that You can't Add Songs To your iPod (as I can Understand..).
It's simple! after Opening iTunes, The iPod should Open and Update itself Automaticaly.. (this is called the automatic Sync)... This, Only If your songs are Checked... If not, Then You will have to check-Em Up to Put them on Your iPod..
Another way To put Music On Your iPod Is By This Way: The Manual iPod management. You Simply Click and Drag the Songs To the iPod icon (in the source list with iTunes). But Before, put it In Manual Mode : http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61148
The Folder With Exclamation mark? Ok, Then Look at This Link: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61003
About this " Firmware update failure: Disk write error "... here's a Link that may help you understand.. : http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300969
Post Back If you Need More Help.
    Good Luck.

Yes , I Do... Don't Send It back..

  • IPod Classic is DOA

I have an iPod Classic. serial 8K724UQ3V9M if that helps at all.  My iPod has become corrupt.  I get the sad iPod face, so I rebook it and take it into the disc mode, and connect it to iTunes.  When I do that the computer and iTunes now recognizes it, but iTunes says it needs to Restore it.  I click OK, and it goes through a restore, then it says it will reboot the iPod and then it will show up in iTunes.  It reboots it, but it goes back to the sad iPod screen and doesn't show up in iTunes.  I do this process over and over, and nothing new happens.  Now what can I try??

Ohh, ok then, will not worry about beeping for sure, thx :3

  • Is my video iPod DOA?

    Hi,
I attached my new 30Gb video iPod to my G5 iMac via the supplied USB 2.0 connector 9 hours ago. All I have is an icon for my iPod on the Desktop with the red circle with a slash through it. On the video screen of the iPod I have the same flashing red circle with a slash through it and the words 'Do Not Disconnect' - according to the Quick Start Guide the initial charge should take approximately 3 hours. My iPod has been connected now for 9 hours. The iPod itself is not responding in any way - no backlit screen, no click wheel functions - nothing. The battery icon at the top of screen would seem to indicate that it is fully charged but why can I get no response at all? Should I simply return it to my Mac retailer tomorrow?
What a disappointment this has been!
    Cheers
    Tricia

Is this your very first iPod?? I think that should be normal!! When you launch iTunes, does your iPod "pop up" on the left hand side panel in iTunes?? You can then change the settings of it via Preferences or click the iPod icon on the bottom right.
You cannot control or so-call turn on and navigate the iPod while it is in the Dock charging and syncing, the red cross sign will continue to flash until you unmount the iPod from your mac. When you first dock your iPod the screen will lit up for a while then it will fade off. While in the dock, you can sync songs via iTunes or if you also enable disk mode, i.e. the iPod icon will mount on the desktop, you can copy files into it like an external hard disk.
Put it this way, when you dock your iPod, it will sort of become a "slave" to the "Master" - your mac, you "cannot do anything to it" while it is docked.
    Cheers

  • IPOD DOA

Hey, I'm an IPOD cultist and barely listen to the radio anymore. My 30GB IPOD is less than a year old. I left it in my car outside for a couple of days and the temperature went down to near 0. When I brought it inside I let it come up to room temperature and plugged it in and got no response whatsoever. Will not reset. Will not recharge. ITUNES does not recognize it anymore. The hold key is not the issue. What can I do? Any suggestions.

I left my iPod 5.5g in my truck for 1 day and night and the temperature went down to 20 below!! I brought it in the next morning and left it alone for hours until it came back to room temperature. When I restored it the screen showed me that the battery was all drained, I charged it for a couple of hours (plugged to the wall) and it worked again like nothing happened.
Try restoring it and see if that works, I don't think exposure to 0 degrees would have done any damage, I know a lot of friends that take theirs skiing and trust me, the put them to the cold test and they are still working!
    Good luck!

  • Ipod Touch - White Screen Lock Out - Apple response poor/process inflexible

    Hi
I have 2 Touchs and one has the random white screen issue. Screens goes grey`white and there's nothing you can do, till what seems like it needs to be recharged. i haven't had this happen when at home and near the 'master dock' .
I see thats its a prob that is more and more common, and have also seen on other forums that Apple are acknowledging it and in some cases have been providing freebies as sweeteners as well (allegedly).
So first - does anyone have any 'fixes' - other than what I have seen which is a replacement?
And secondly this is my 'Apple Service experience so far'
I called Apple UK support on Thursday morning, and pressed the options for Ipod and then Touch.
A woman answered and as soon as I told her my issue she advised she was IPHONE SUPPORT ONLY as that was section I had come through to and could not help me. I asked to be put through to relevant help section.
On hold for a few mins then line went dead.
Called back - making sure i pressed Ipod Touch options - in case it was user error first time - (it wasn't BTW) anyway got put through to IPHONE support again. This time the woman agreed to help, although i shall temper that by saying that my perception was that she started that day and had a script of 'if x do y' questions.
I explained the issue and that I had carried out web research. She was very polite but asked me questions I had already answered in my pre amble - i.e. screen is locked out, no response from buttons etc - but I was still asked what happens when you press the power button. Anyway I stuck with it - she then asked what firmware I had, and i advised I just upgraded to 1.2.
Ah thats the problem - you need to upgrade to LEOPARD (I have Tiger). That annoyed me as clearly thats rubbish and was really her ' ad libbing' I explained I had 2 touchs and other was fine.
She consulted a colleague and suggested I either send it in or make an appt at my local Apple store. Thats when it really went down hill...
More disappointed at the process, I called my local store (Regent Street - London) and was advised that the Touch would be replaced under warranty - but that I needed to make an appt to have that done, and no they couldn't make an appt on line (you are warned that up front in the recorded message before you get to speak to anyone). This I find odd - two people from Apple advise I can get a replacement under warranty, yet I have to make an appt - thats not good service.
As i am nearby, I decide to go to the Apple store anyway. I get same story and ask to speak to the manager. He is very well trained. He says all the diplomatic things, he agrees unit will be replaced under warranty, but says I have to see a technician - but I cant until tomorrow at earliest.
What then follows is a discussion about the process - his argument is that it allows the customer to attend at a time that suits them (but it suited me NOW - I was nearby). In reality the converse is true you can only chose a slot that suits apple.
The manager, stated that there are two diff stocks of goods. Items for sales and items for replacement. I suggested that he went to the replacement pile and provided one from that. NBo go - the technical dept could only do that.
I agree that booking for TECH SUPPORT is a great idea, but for a product replacement under warranty - especially when 3 people (and user forums) had advised this would be the case - this is not good service at all. The manager looked at me and uttered platitudes along the lines of ' thats your opinion', ' you are entitled to think that' - all of them verging on patronising. he even went as far to say that customers like being able to book a slot - erm - they have no choice!
He advised he 'would take my views on board' and would 'pass them on to the manager' - he was in fact the deputy manager. I left my details and explicitly asked for her comments - needless to say I am still waiting.
So i feel like I have fallen out with a close friend. I have been an Apple convert for 2 years now and this is our first major falling out. I am annoyed, as a customer, at being treated like this and forced into such a rigid system, and bitterly disappointed that a company that has such a a wonderful end user experience in terms of the products themselves and the sales side should treat loyal customers (in fact any customers) this way when trying to dal with faulty goods!
So, anyone have any thoughts - agree/disagree - who can I voice this to in Apple - the store doesn't seem to care past lip service!
I will also try to repost this on the general area if there is one
    Rgds
    Michael

    Hi,
I used to work at an Apple Store so I have 2 summers of customer service experience under my belt. Let me just say that, yes, I empathize. Some of the store policies are ridiculous, which is partly why I left the company. Well, ok no, I just like to say that that's why I left. I'm actually a student.
Anyways, whoever told you that you can't make an appointment at the Genius Bar was WRONG. Shame on them. Go to this website (it's just apple.com/uk/retail (and Regent Street's site specifically) and on the right hand side there's a column for you to click Genius Bar Reserve.
    http://www.apple.com/uk/retail/regentstreet/week/20071118.html
Here's the entire gist of the store policy. The store is obligated to give you a new iPod Touch if there's a manufacturer defect within 2 weeks of your original purchase. You'll still need a Genius Bar appointment, but all they do is take a look at it, confirm that it's a defect, and they'll return it for you (& they'll label it as DOA - Dead on arrival), and give you a new one. Easy.
I'm guessing you are outside of the 14 day period which is causing you all the trouble. So now we're talking about the year warranty. So you got your replacement iPod touch. Should there still be a defect in your replacement, you still have 14 days from the day you received THAT iPod touch to get a new one. There's a chance that if you talk to the manager (a different one and there are several), he'll hook you up with a brand new iPod touch, without having to go through replacement protocol.
The manager you talked with sounds like a jerk to me, and believe me, I hate it when Apple employees try to think theyre "all that." We student employees used to laugh at how seriously some employees took it. But really, those guys are there to help you and give you solutions, at least that's the company line. With that in mind, demand them to do what's right. I wish I could actually help you. I used to take care of people in situations like these all the time.
    Good luck.

  • BRAND NEW iPod Touch 2g will not power up

I just received a new iPod Touch 2g via FedEx today, and it won't power up at all. I've tried connecting it to my PC (Vista 32-bit) and the screen remains completely blank. I've tried doing the hard reset (holding the home and power buttons down for 10 sec.) and the screen also just stays blank.
This is the first time I can remember a piece of hardware being DOA...is this merely a glitch? Is there anything else I can try to fix this?

I have had my iPod Touch 2g for a few weeks and have not used it a huge amount yet. I was very upset to find that after placing it in it's new Krusell case this evening and trying to turn it on (wake from sleep) a few hours later, it was completely dead. Dodo like.
Pressing the power button or the wake up button did nothing. I eventually found this thread and tried the power and wake up button together for 10 seconds. This seemed to work and it now appear to be fine.
A bit unnerving though, as I am working hard to get all my apps and data together so that I can use it as my PDA going forward. I need to move away from the old Sony Clie that has served me so well for about six years. It needs charging too often and I know the Palm platform is undeveloped.
I hope the iPod Touch doesn't let me know. Gave me a fright.
Hope you get yours going again...

  • Trying to install iPod software on Windows XP - keep getting Error 1607!!

We bought my daughter an iPod for Christmas. I've been trying to get the software installed for over two hours!! I've been to the website for the download, I've tried it from the CD, I've tried it from links in these posts--nothing works!! I keep getting Error 1607 (a runtime error). When I go to the step by step solutions, absolutely NONE of them apply to me. It sounds (reads) like alot of people are having this issues today. Has anyone found a REAL solution!!

Exactly the same problem ! Ruined my son's Christmas ! Can't get through apple's tech support due to high volume of calls. If you read their return policy if it's DOA(Dead On Arrival) your entiteled to a refund or exchange. Call 1800 275-2273, good luck getting through. I dont feel after spending that kind of money I should have to waste hours upon hours on downloads, upgrades and software installations and still may have problems once you get to I-tunes.They have a hugh problem here ! Hopefully they have a better consumer care policy and give people their money back ! Good Luck, AC

  • Computer crashed- all new now. How to bring library and playlists from Ipod

My PC crashed and was pronounced DOA. All library and playlists were and still are on Ipod Classic (20GB). Obviously wasn't able to follow directions for normal transfer of lib. and p.lists as event not planned. Built completely new PC and loaded up Itunes. I had all my music library backed up on an external and can load, but is there any way I can save my 50 meticulously created playlists back into Itunes? Please say "Yes"!

Other free programs are Pod Player, SharePod and Floola.
If you want to recover just the structure of playlists from the iPod (and not the actual song files themselves), there's iRepo for Windows. which I understand has this feature along with all the standard features for these programs.
iPodRip also has the feature enabling you to reconstruct playlists.
