4th Gen iPodTouch does as stated in question. Am restoring it now. Why would this happen?

Could be software glitch or hardware problem.
If you successfully restored (went through all steps without error) to factory settings/new iPod via iTunes (Not via Settings>General>Reset>Erase all Content and Setting) and still have the problem that indicates a hardware problem.

If your problem persists get yourself a micro USB cable (sold separately), you can restore your Apple TV from iTunes:
Remove ALL cables from Apple TV. (if you don't you will not see Apple TV in the iTunes Source list)
Connect the micro USB cable to the Apple TV and to your computer.
Open iTunes.
Select your Apple TV in the Source list, and then click Restore.

Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new). Has any of this been tried?

Try SMC Reset (unplug it from the back of the computer for 10 seconds then plug it back. in)
Try PRAM Reset Cmd + OPtion + P + R on start up.
Try safe boot - hold down shift on start up.
Try booting to install dvd (C on start up) or recovery hd (CMD + R) and using disk utility to run a verify and repair. If you still can't boot after that reinstall the operating system. If you can't find the disc or it wont boot to the disc.
Try single mode which is cmd+S on start up. It will open with a terminal looking window in the terminal. type in /sbin/fsck -TL. If it returns *system has been modified* continue to type that command in until it comes back with macintosh hd seems to be ok. If after 5 tries it still gives you system has been modified. You may have to replace the hard drive.

Really Need Help!!

First, try a system reset. It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until the screen blacks out or you see the Apple logo. Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears. You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore. Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset. Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync. From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab. Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup. You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod. Again, say "yes."
Finally, if the Restore doesn't work, let the battery drain completely. Then recharge for at least an hour and Restore again.

IPod shows apple logo and nothing else

I managed to put it on disk mode, and iTunes actually "saw" it. I even uploaded some tracks, everything is ok supposedly but when I reset it, it shows the apple logo and won't do anything else after that. All you see is the logo.
That was the case even before I upload any of the tracks.

You need to put it back into disk mode, connect it to the computer, and restore it with the ipod updater. The ipods software is not installed correctly. Here is a link addressing your exact issue. Try:
- iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
- Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
- Try another cable
- Try on another computer
- If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

Iphone will not turn on! Shows Apple logo then fades out?

I have an iphone 3g used, jailbroken. Worked fine till last night, left it in car, woke up this morning and was off. I plug it into car charger and now apple logo went on, then fades out and nothing adter 30 seconds. I went to store and guy said to reboot in itunes. I plug it into my computer and NOTHING! wont detect it or even give the apple screen. I plug it into my car charger, hold home and power button and I get the plug into itunes screen. As soon as i unplug it to connect to laptop itunes, the phone shuts off. Help! My business is on this phone. When it is plugged into i tunes, i just get a faint black screen. I only get apple logo when plugged into car charger.

Try to force it into recovery mode. Disconnect it from the USB cord. Press and hold the home button while plugging in the computer's USB cord. Continue holding the Home button while iPhone starts up. I am trying to get into the ipod to save the files, if, in fact, there are any files left. I have followed the steps in the "support steps" all the way through the "Services" inputs. But I still can not get the unit to reset to the point where I can retrieve my files. Whenever it is that it does show in iTunes (and it doesn't always), there is a message that says that the unit should be restored. Restoring will delete all files. So it suggests that I backup the files on the unit. If I can't see the files, for the previously stated reasons, how can I possibly "back up" any files?

Why does my iPod nano shut off randomly? I just bought it. After about a minute of music, it shuts off.

I just bought my wife an iPod nano. Went through the set up and then updated the iPod through iTunes. Now, after about a minute of music (with two different sets of headphones) it simply shuts off. As if it's in power convseration mode. But I can't find a setting to prevent this. Very frustrating for having JUST bought this.

If you have not already, do a Reset following this procedure.

A Reset just restarts the iPod. It is not erased.
If that does not help, the most likely fix for your problem would be a Restore. This WILL erase the iPod, re-install its softare, and set it to default settings. To do it, select the iPod in the iTune sidebar, under DEVICES. Over to the right, go to the Summary tab. The button for doing a Restore is there.
For anything that is currently on your computer (such as songs and pictures) that were synced to the iPod, you can just re-sync them. That should not take too long, even if you do it manually (without using automatic syncing).
For anything that is only on the iPod (not on your computer), they will be lost if you do a Restore. But that was a known risk. After all, your iPod could be lost or stolen (or seriously damaged), and those items would be lost.
If those items are songs you purchased from the iTunes Store, you can re-download them (at no cost) on the iTunes Store Purchased screen.

Then, see if iTunes will recognize it when connected. Also, if it is recognized more reliably in Disk Mode, before doing a Restore, you can try using a third-party method or utility to transfer song files off the iPod to your computer. earlier my itunes told me that my files were corrupted and I needed to restore, so I did. In the middle of the restore I lost internet connection. Now my computer and Itunes will not recognize my Ipod and if it is not plugged in when I turn the Ipod on it only shows the apple logo then shuts off after 30 seconds. If it is plugged in it will charge, but Itunes and Windows will not recognize it. I have tried the menu + select shutoff multiple times with no change. All it will say while it is charging is do not disconnect.

The clicking sound is your iPod Hardisk, trying to retract and find the boot sector unsuccesfully.
Hopefully, you can do the iPod Disk Diagnostic as in this great post by tt2., it wont fix your problem, but let you know, how dire is your Hardisk health.
So only as a last resort, one way, to get the stuck Hardisk head free, is to bang the iPod on a rubber mouse pad, when you reset it, but do it at your own risk, some very lucky guys got it working again for the next 14 months, like myself.
