Is Apex For Me?

Hello. I am an Epidemiologist at a state department of health, and I am looking for a way to create a web based database where the different laboratories in the state can have someone log in, input data on any positive flu screens, and then have a chart be immediately updated showing the number of cases reported for the season, for the month, and for the week... I would also like to be able to pull out a report telling me where the cases have been reported, by whom, etc.
Is APEX right for me? If not, any suggestions? Thanks!

Hi,
A few months back I did some consulting for a group doing a very similar application (except they were correlating waterway bacteria counts at various locations throughout the state). Apex worked perfectly for them, not only because of the ease of use but also because Apex allowed them to view their data (over time) on-line and then download it into Excel for various other tasks. What used to take months to get done through their IT departments we were able to do in a couple of weeks. I would advise that you get someone knowledgeable to design your database so you get it right the first time, that will save you lots of rework and frustration.
Keep Smiling,
Bob R

  • What is the APEX for?

    Hello, everyone.
Here is a question - What is the APEX for? Can it be usable for production? For a pro?
I create an application, but I know nothing about HTML, javascript and other site-made-stuff. But my application is working pretty well. And it scares me. Can I put it in open-WEB? How about security? Strong to hackers? Does it safe enough?
Is anybody using APEX for a PRO? Only APEX, I mean.. Or it's only for home-fun-with-my-database?
    Thanks for answers..

    Hi there
    Short & Sweet answers
    A.What is the APEX for?
Oracle Application Express (Oracle APEX), formerly called HTML DB, is a rapid web application development tool for the Oracle database. Using only a web browser and limited programming experience, you can develop and deploy professional applications that are both fast and secure.
B.Can it be usable for production? For a pro?
    Yes
C.I create an application, but I know nothing about HTML, javascript and other site-made-stuff.
You can learn ...steep learning curve initially...
    D.Can I put it in open-WEB?
    Depends...
    How about security?

  • Suitability of APEX for the task

    Hi Everyone,
I'm designing a personal finance application, still in the conceptual planning phase. The idea is to create a small self contained app that can be offered for sale/download to the general public very reasonably. The business model is sell a million @ $30 bucks each. I would love if I could use APEX for this, but my only experience working with Oracle is in connection with larger, more enterprise-related, projects.
Is this a type of application APEX would be suited to? What does this business model look like, in the APEX world? Can APEX be distributed in a self-contained, runtime, code-obscured type of framework? Or do I need to stick with an MS Access or MySQL web dev type of delivery model?
    Thanks in advance!
    Bo

    Bo,
APEX requires the Oracle database. So, while you could offer the application as a packaged app (and run it through a code obfuscator, but even then, anyone with access to the builder will be able to see what your pages look like, etc.), your customers would still need to install and set up at least the Oracle XE version--not exactly a one-click install option. You could offer your service as a hosted, online tool, but you're going to run into issues with users not wanting to put personal financial information on the web; you're going to have to ensure that data security is in place--even from you, probably.
    Good luck,

  • Need your suggestion / Input about choosing Apex for new application

    Guys,
I came across oracle apex this week and started digging through the documentation and presentations. Read some forums as well. Now I believe, our application can be helpful by utilizing Apex but I would like to share high level application functionality which I am trying to implement through Apex
Following are the functionality of the application:
    1) there will be 40 different entity in the application (create/edit/read/delete)
    2) Each entity and CRUD processing will be roles based
    3) On various events, send email and generate XML files for interfacing with external system
    4) Scheduling report generation and normal report generation
    5) Detail audit trail of the application (doesn't depend of Ajax, but still want to point out)
    6) Various search capabilities for each entity
    7) On various event and user selection: generate PDF file which user can download / print.
    8) Many client side and server side validations.
Based on my reading, I believe this can be easily achieved with certainly some learning curve in AJAX. (which I have to do as I lost my entire project team due to budget issues.). I have a web devleopment background using Java, JSP and Servlet for 5 years. (Nothing in last 3 years though)
Please let me know your thoughts based on my current situation and functionality.
Also, Do i need to buy anything to get started with apex and implementing apex full blown application (they say it's free, but just want to understand your perspective as well).
Thank you for reading the post and your support.

  • Installing one APEX for multiple databases servers.

    Hello, everyone.
I'm new on this world of Oracle solutions, and I would like
    very much your help.
Here in my company I have five database servers, and I want to install
the Oracle Apex in a way that I only need access one webpage and have
the possibility to edit all the database.
    For instance:
Imagine that I have five machines and each one has a instance of one database.
I would instal the Apex on each machine. But I would like to open the Apex on
my browser only once, and have the capability to work with all databases.
It would be like the Apex had a scrollbar and I could choose wich database to work.
Is that possible? If it is, could be done with XML DB server? What is the best HTTP server to use in this case?
    Thanks for your attention.
Sorry if I wasn't clear, I'm new and I'm learning.
    Regards, Leandro R. de Freitas.

    Hi,
as you describe this, it is not possible. An Apex instance is installed in an Oracle instance and is as a result is tied very closely to that instance.
That being said, it is still possible to access data in different database instances from a seperate database by the use of database links, though this is can be a little complicated and not always desirable from a performance point of view. Whether this is desirable in your instance depends on the architecture of your applications.
For example, if your 5 different instances are part of one distributed application, it may be desirable to install Apex in one instance that may be termed the master instance and have it access data from the other instances via database links, which should already exist in a distributed application.
On the other hand, if your applications are quite distinct, then I would see it as desirable to have seperate installations of Apex in each instance. This would enable different release cycles and versioning if required, lead towards better performance and avoid single point of failure. If you need a united front end to these applications then you could maybe create a gateway application on one of the Apex instances, though how you deal with sign on would depend on your architecture eg Single Sign on vs LDAP etc. You could simply create an HTML page somewhere on your intranet that points to these applications and then let each application deal with sign on.
    I hope this helps.

  • APEX for XE and PL/PDF

    Hi All,
I have started to test PL/PDF, and have it creating a BLOB etc in a table.
My issues is with XE (as it is meant to be supported), is how to display the pdf (currently stored as a blob in the database).
The blob table doesn't have any "ID" as all the other examples use, i.e All the examples seem to reference files that have been uploaded via APEX initially. As the PL/PDF pdf file is directly into the database. How can I get it rendered onto the clients display, without using modplsql (as it's not used in APEX XE Edition).
    TIA
    Jon

    <p>Hi Jon,
Hopefully the following article covers everything you need to accomplish
    <ul><li>http://www.oracle-base.com/articles/9i/ExportBlob9i.php</li></ul>
    Regards, Kris</p>
Forgot to add, if you are on windows, substitute /tmp/ for a valid windows path eg "C:/temp/"
also see the note at the bottom:
"Bug #2546782, raised against 9.2.0 on Windows 2000, reports wrong output from UTL_FILE.PUT_RAW
Oracle 10g includes extra open modes (rb, wr, ab) to signify byte mode operation. The "wb" open mode can be used along with the PUT_RAW procedure to prevent extra newline characters being added on a Windows platform."

  • Cocoon - Tomcat - APEX for FOP PDF printing

I'm trying to setup Cocoon & Tomcat with APEX 4.1 for doing PDF printing of some reports.
    I'm using Linux 64bit, Tomcat 7.0.22, Cocoon 2.1.11, and JDK (build 1.6.0_24-b07).
I followed Carl Backstrom's very helpful [blog entry|http://carlback.blogspot.com/2007/03/apex-cocoon-pdf-and-more.html] about using cocoon and tomcat to produce PDF reports through APEX. However, I must just be missing something, because it's not working at all for me.
Does anyone have any suggestions about getting this to work? Whenever, I attempt to hit the cocoon site (localhost:8080/cocoon/), I receive the following error:
"org.apache.cocoon.ResourceNotFoundException: No pipeline matched request: index.html"
Whenever I attempt to download a PDF report, I receive this error:
"Adobe reader cannot open 'reportname.pdf' because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged."
If you have this configuration (cocoon, tomcat, APEX, PDF printing) working, I'd greatly appreciate it if you shared any URLs or tips you have in getting this setup. I understand why folks fork out the big $ for BI Publisher, but that's not an option for me.
    Many thanks,
    Reid

In the Tomcat Manager app, it shows that cocoon is deployed and running.
I was able to reload it as well:
"OK - Reloaded application at context path /cocoon"
I see this in the Tomcat log:
"SEVERE: The web application [cocoon] appears to have started a thread named [HSQLDB Timer @6b033450] but has failed to stop it. This is very likely to create a memory leak."

  • Oracle Forms vs APEX for Web Development

Could you please suggest me which Oracle Technology will be better suitable give flexibility for developing a web application of Information processing.
    1). Oracle Forms (Web)
    or
    2) Oracle Application express
and also please explain the how it is good comparative other.

I think you should also include the licensing issues in application development/deployment plans. As you might know, Forms requires iDS (for development) and iAS EE (for deployment) licenses. For JDeveloper and ADF, the development platform is free and the iAS Java version is much cheaper compared to the iAS EE license. When it comes to APEX licensing, it is free as long as the database server is properly licensed. For a small size company, APEX and the JDeveloper + ADF and iAS Java version makes perfect sense. Because Forms Services is only a part of the EE version of the iAS server, it might be an expensive option for a small scale application. On the other hand iAS EE is very capable and scaleable framework and you can deploy both J2EE, Forms, Reports, Discoverer, Portal applications from a single platform.
    Hope this proves useful.

  • ADF Faces or APEX for a lightweight browser-based front end.

I'm tasked with prototyping a lightweight browser based front end to display consolidated customer information. It needs to be callable from half a dozen disparate and mostly non-Oracle applications. The idea is that each application will have a button that can kick off a browser session to see a data-warehouse sourced view of a customer. Forms10g (where my experience lies) seems too resource heavy for the constant opening/closing of this little application but APEX looks like a good fit with not too steep a learning curve and the guys on the forum thuoght it was well suited. ADF Faces seems to have a steep learning curve given that I don't have any Java experience but a small view-only app like this might be a good place to gain experience useful for more complex apps. My question is whether ADF Faces is a goot fit for this sort of task. If anyone has used ADF Faces and APEX I'd be very grateful for their thoughts.

    Thanks for those pointers Grant.
Just a couple of further questions. As a company we're stuck on Internet Explorer 5.5 for another 18 months or so (>5,000desktops!). Does that exclude ADF Faces as an option given the prune-faced geriatric nature of the browser we're using (we're also on NT4.0 :-) Also, they're likely to be in and out of this screen like a fiddler's elbow and I'm wondering if the start-up effort using ADF Faces is likely to be significantly more resource intensive than an APEX equivalent.
My background is Oracle*Forms (since 2.0) and it would be nice to make a start on a technology that could be used in place of Forms in more complex apps - I just need to be able to justify the likely increased costs to people focused predominantly on this project's costs.

  • Xml publisher of R12 with apex for reporting

    Hi gurus,
can i use the inbult xml publisher engin of R12 to configure Apex reports.
    Please Help
    Regards
    Vishal

NO, the license for that version of BI Publisher does NOT allow you to use it with external tools.... You would be better off getting a new licensed version for your APEX install...

  • APEX For reports and charts

    Hi Y'all,
I have an application running on plsql webtool kit, now only for reports and charts I want to use APEX. I would like to put a reports menu in the application which will take the user to the reports / charts created by APEX. Is that possible?
Also, the application user will be authenticated at the loggin on time, so when he/she hits APEX I want to pass the same authentication to APEX as well. Is that possible?
Thanks in advance for your replies.
    -Vatsa

    Hello Vatsa,
Why don't you just recreate everything in APEX?
We had a customer that wanted exactly that, but if you do the calculation about supporting a plsql webtoolkit app, it doesn't make sense. APEX is soo much faster to develop in.

  • Who's using APEX for their corporate website?

    Hi,
I'm trying to convince a prospective client that APEX is the way to go for the redevelopment of their corporate website. They would like to see some examples of other organisation's websites that have been implemented in APEX.
If you know of any I'd be grateful if you could post the URL here.
    Cheers,

    Hello Andrew,
Google on : inurl:"apex/f" 8080 and you'll get over 5000 hits of websites using the standard APEX setup. A lot of them need username/passwords, but some of them are public like:
