Is Arch really becoming unstable?

I've been having a look around the forums and I've been seeing threads saying "Don't use Arch if you don't want to keep maintaining it"...is Arch becoming what I didn't want it to become? When I switched to Arch, people on the Ubuntu forums were saying "Arch is really easy to maintain. When you've set it up, you won't need to do much more". I hope it isn't, because if I leave Arch, I'll have to drop my website (or convert it to another distro) and leave Shaman behind (I helped with some of it's artwork).
Also I wish there was something like "Archbuntu" because, to be honest, setting up Arch is getting a bit annoying. I posted this on my blog, and I said my dream distro would
* Rolling release
* Uses KDE4 (or lets you choose)
* Lets me choose what programs to install
* No extra apps I don't need/want
* Uses the pacman package manager
* A good frontend to pacman - otherwise known as Shaman
* Works well out of the box
* No need to use the CLI
Which basically means I would love an easy Arch Linux...I couldn't make a distro like that because I have no idea how to do it, and it would take hours and hours to upload an ISO...

Well having a GUI would be so much better because I would be able to see the description of apps, with Pacman, I am confronted with confusing names. Let's pick on Eye of Gnome. The Pacman package is called "eog". How exactly am I supposed to know what it is? I would have to do
pacman -Ss eog
to get
extra/eog 2.20.4-1 (gnome-extra)
Eye of Gnome: An image viewing and cataloging program
If I had a GUI, I could just click on Gnome, then scroll down to "e" (Pacman orders packages in repo order) then tick the box. Which one sounds easier? I search for burn and it comes up with:
kde/k3b 1.0.4-20080331

testing/k3b 1.0.4-2
Feature-rich and easy to handle CD burning application
testing/nautilus-cd-burner 2.22.0-1 (gnome-extra)

How am I supposed to find the best burner with that? I'll have to experiment with each one until I find a good one...

My word, pages and email has become unstable any suggestions?
This happens during the creation of email or word/pages documents.

Try starting in Safe Mode and see if the problem still occurs?
    Restart holding the "shift" key.
(Expect it to take longer to start this way because it runs a directory check first.)
If this works look in System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login items and delete any third party login items (-), you can always add them back with the (+).

If you are printing via a Windows shared printer and it is the Windows user account that you are being prompted for then you can save this in the Keychain, as shown below.

  • UK - 857 With BT ADSL MAX - Lines become unstable and router require FW upg

    Hi,
We are starting to see a number of DSL MAX sites running 857 routers becoming unstable, constant loss of sync, re-authentications etc - sometimes up to 400 a day. We called out the Telco (BT) and they tested the line as OK and stable. After swapping the kit three times I spoke with TAC and they provided me with a newer version of the ATM Firmware (2.6.4) - This fixes the problem and stabilises the line.
My question is - Has anyone else seen this problem in the UK? Are BT rolling out a code upgrade to their DSLAMs or changing some hardware? Is this likely to affect all UK DSL MAX connections in the near future?
    Andy.

    Andy,
We've likewise seen issues with Cisco 870 routers on BT ADSL lines. I doubt that BT will do any upgrades to their DSLAMs as we've found them pretty unhelpful when it comes to DSL. We're currently rolling out a lot of 870s and I'm going to be upgrading firmware on all of them before deployment.
    Cheers,

  • Safari becomes unstable when I'm viewing my Friendster Profile.

I launched Safari and I want to check my Friendster and to view my Profile. Suddenly, becomes unstable due to too much flash contents (e.g. YouTube). But I tried to load my profile in other browsers and it's working fine. It increased CPU usage to 100% and most likely to cause hang-ups on my new web browser. I tested my profile on Firefox and even it increased cpu usage on firefox application up to 100%, my profile there is working fine.

Unfortunately, Safari 3 beta isn't finished and optimized product. Flash animations cause a huge CPU utilization. You should wait for final version of Safari for Windows.

  • USB3 ports have become unstable - random drive dismounts (W520)

    Hi,
I have a ThinkPad W520 (ThinkVantage Toolbox shows the Product as 4270CTO). About 18months old.  Have been using the USB3 ports (direct, not via an external hub) to mount TrueCrypt encrypted external HDDs (Seagate GoFlex USB3.0 Slim/Ultraportable).
Worked well for 15 months or so.  Last couple of months the USB ports have become unstable - dismounting the external drives randomly and then Windows pops up that irritating "You need to format the disk in drive G: before you can use it" window.  Sometimes that happens two or three times in rapid succession for the same drive, over a 4 to 10 second period.  Occassionally that's followed by a message in the system tray to the effect that the USB3 port has fallen back to USB2 (a message along the lines of "this drive could perform better if plugged into a USB3 port").
It's causing havoc with the encrypted filesystems - when I remount them I get a Windows prompt to scan and fix the filesystem due to the bad dismount.
    Any ideas?

  • Is Arch really the best choice?

    I'm confused.
At the beginning when I used Arch, I thought it was the best distro out there. Good package manager, lots of packages actively maintained.
But then came stability problems - gradually. More and more programs seemed to be unstable.
Now I'm using CRUX - since the accident of removing /etc. And I must admit that I NEVER had any stability problems with it (now and before I moved to Arch). Everything works flawlessly.
Is there everything all right with Arch? Maybe it's on the verge of turning into another Redhat/SuSE/Mandrake?
Arch tries too follow KISS principle, but does it really do so? pacman is certainly not the most obvious piece of software.
    Is Arch's release policy beneficial?
Last but not least, I'm not so sure if Arch is really that much improved compared to CRUX. I found CRUX extremely pleasant thanks to it's prt-get utility.

vicious wrote:Haven't you noticed that this thread is not really about CRUX. It's about Arch.
    yes
vicious wrote:The problem is: most of you think that Arch Linux is (more or less) perfect. That's why you use it. That's fine - but is this an objective or subjective attitude?
subjective, why would I use Arch if I don't want to?
vicious wrote:What is the goal of Arch Linux project? What's the target user profile? Is this a distribution for geeks or newbees? What's the scope of the project - what tools should be implemented specific for Arch?
Arch is mostly a distro for developers and other hacker wannabes, people that just wan't a stripped down system that never let you down.
vicious wrote:The problem is that Arch is just a mix of ideas from different places. It's a CRUX's spinoff and a wannabe Fedora with slight traces of Debian.  You might say that it's a mix of the best ideas - but that's not true.
    Fedora wannabe?? Who said that?
vicious wrote:If I wanted a bleeding edge distro, I would go for Gentoo.
If I needed an absolutely simplistic distro, I would go for CRUX.
If I was a newbee, I'd go for Fedora Core.
If I needed stability, I'd go for Debian.
lol! go for gentoo! Are you a ricer? Haven't used Crux but I doubt that it's better than Arch. Fedora is just a Red Hat playground so it's not a serious distro. Debian would be a better choice but I said it before that it's Arch' destiny to challenge Debian as the best vanilla distro, atleast on the desktop. Debian has more than 1000 devs so it's not so easy for Arch at this point to compete with it.
vicious wrote:Each of these goals excludes the others. You cannot have a stable bleeding edge distro. You cannot have a simplistic newbee distro.
I think that Arch will never be a newbie distro, there are tons of them already. No need for more..
    vicious wrote:Where does Arch fit?
In my boxes it fit's perfectly, and probably in many others too.
vicious wrote:Nowhere! It's features are not coherent. Parts are simplistic (boot scripts, abs). Parts are not (pacman). You want hardware autodetection without autoconfiguration. You want gui frontend for pacman, but not for config files.
Where have you heard this? There is no work beeing made on making Arch "easier", not that I heard of atleast. All the gui pacman frontends are not easier than cli, it's more that it looks better than the ugly terminal.
vicious wrote:Arch doesn't have ANY feature which would make me say: "this is the best solution i've seen; no other distro has it". Arch is just average - for some people it might be a good option, but others should find something more suitable for their application.
The nicest feature for me in Arch is the lack of features. It's also nice that you can code in almost "all" language without need for fiddling with manual installations. Mplayer plays "everything" out of the box, absolutely rocksteady base system(I don't use gnome or qt though) and smart developers that fix problems pretty quick.
    Go Arch!!! Fight the whingers!!!

  • TC drive becoming unstable and noisy....is it going to fail for sure?

Hi. Last weekend I was rushing to finish some jobs. To work faster, I was working at the same time on my mac and my Windows XP laptop, both sharing files stored in TC (500 Gb 1.5 years old).
Suddenly all started to move very slowly I think it was because a file transfer from pc to Tc was aborted. Both mac and pc got stuck. I noticed it could be related to TC and restarted the TC. Both systems resumed, but since that the behavior of the TC is completely unstable, freezing my Finder (pizza cutter) several times. I restarted the TC few times.
Yesterday I was trying to check if I could access some files, and the drive started to make a very annoying noise (kind of a be-bep morse code).
    What can I do?
It seems to be physical related...could it just be a structure thing?
Do you think I should start to move everything to another drive?
Is noise an advice of the drive death?
    Thanks a lot.
    Guillermo

The amount of free space required is rather dependent on how you use the system, but I wouldn't go below where you are at present. It's easy to get lulled into a false sense of security because an SSD is so much faster than a traditional hard drive that you don't really norice the impact of leaving too little space in the same way. With a traditional HD, the system slows and gets very laggy, then as space reduces further, it begins to hang and there are copious appearances of the spinning beachball. All give you a clue that you are running into a problem and are the result of MacOS having to hunt for sufficient space, preferenbly contiguous space, on the drive for paging memory blocks. An SSD causes much less of a slowdown and rather more in the way of unpredictable, if brief, system hangs because paging is much fatser. Your iTunes playback pause could well have been one of those unpredictable system hangs caused by paging to a too-small block of free space.
Like any memory, SSDs can suffer faults, and unfortunately SMART status can be very unhelpful in accurately pinpointing reliable status, but on balance I suspect if you free off a couple more Gb, you'll find your system behaves a little better!
[ON EDIT] Also bear in mind that the symptoms of a failing hard drive and faulty SSD are likely to be very different. A failing HD will result in the system hunting for data, which creates pauses and can be heard as repetitive drive cycling. An SSD won't hunt because there's no head to cycle, instead it will be far more likely to just crash.

  • HP Pavilion dv7 2215sa memory upgrade to 8gb becomes unstable

I have a HP DV7 2215sa laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit ed and it has 4GB of Ram.
I wanted to upgrade the mem to 8GB to bought two 4GB mem from Crucial and experienced the following problems:
    1. Turned on the laptop after the upgrade and got 'Windows is loading file' message. After that, windows didn't load and saw the HP logo again (as you would do when you start the machine up). Then was presented with two options..... start windows normally or load windows repair (something like that, I can't remeber the exact message). With Either option selected, the machine just goes into the same bootup loop and you then presented with the same two options.
    >>>>> Did a system check on the machine, i.e. checked memory and hardisk and they passed successfully. (System check being the option you go to when see the HP logo and press F2 i think....??)
    2. Machine boots up after system check and......windows starts to load up, but crashes when I get to login prompt.
    3. Restart machine again, Windows doesn't load and I get those previous two options again.....selsct load windows normally and....windows loads up! I manage to log in! I casn browse the web, load applications...and its quite fast but notice something strange. The screen flashes (just the once) and my wireless connection dies for about 5 minutes, i.e. get crossed symbol in the wirless icon as if to say its been disbaled when its not. The blue light is still on for wirless though on the laptop.
    4. Wireless recovers. Run Go on to firefox, try to update it.....the update fails. Load itunes, it requires an update.....when it tries to download the update from apple, it gets a download rate that reminiscent of dialup...Kill, the download and acquire the latest file from Apple. Windows then tells me that the download in unverified and that it cant be trusted. **bleep**? Try this a number of times and then eventually it manages to accept the file somehow. But the drama doesn't end there, th install cycles about 5/6 times and then it eventually installs the application. (It was the 64bit version, 32bit couldn't be installed as advised by apple).
    5. Rebooted the machine about three times and managed to log in all three times but still seemed unstable (i.e. firefox still didn't update).
    6. Next day, started the machine.....BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH.....something about memory management. didn't get the error message recorded but knew it was to do with memory.
I've got my laptop working again by re-installing my old memory.
    The modules that I bought were....... DDR310600 1.5V 4GB (x2)
My current modules are Samsung PC3-10600 2GB
I didn't try installing one module at a time to see which one was faulty because I was annoyed and just returned the memory back.
Has anyone had a similar experience with the same if not similar laptop? And if so, how did you manage to upgrade your laptop to 8GB?
    Thanks,
    Dav

  • Have networked external drive for backup. 3 Macs, 1 iMac, 2 MBPros. I'm using Airport Express net'd to Extreme(my router). Ethernet from Express to Seagate Central. Since Maverick Time machine has become unstable, what can I do?

Have 2 almost new Mac Book Pros & a 27" March '13 iMac. All are 10.9.4. Wireless backup for all had been functioning well until Maverick was installed in all three. Airport Extreme is my router, Express connected to Seagate Central 4TB ext drive wirelessly. Wireless sig levels are maxed out at all 3 systems & Time Machine is now unstable and Apple Care networking tech contact says my config is not supported. Will it be supported if I acquire the new Airport Extreme, replacing the older version? If not, what config will permit 3 systems running TM backups every hour to one backup drive?

Apple do not support Time Machine to the older Gen1-5 AE with a USB drive.
I am not even sure if they support Gen6 although they do now say it will work.
You would be better buying a Time Capsule than another AE.. it is much faster than using USB drives and Apple more likely to help you.. if help is possible on mavericks.
You will find a cheaper solution is to use Carbon Copy Cloner.. which can continue using your existing setup.. it costs $40 for a license to cover all the computers in your home.

  • 10.5.3 - USB Devices become unstable :(

Since upgrading to 10.5.3, two of my USB devices (a thumb drive and a RALink chipset-based USB wireless key - as I need to plug it into an external antenna) have become flakey.
This problem doesn't occur in 10.5 or 10.5.2, I downgraded on both machines (2007 MacBookPro and 2007 MacBook, both Intel, 4GB Ram) to test and couldn't replicate the issue. Upgrading back to 10.5.3 causes the instability again.
    Any thoughts?

I am experiencing a similar issue. I cannot write to any external usb drive. I can read files, but when I try to save, I get a disk full message. Also, I have an HP scanner/printer that when I try to scan a document, it says that the computer can't communicate with the scanner. However, I can print. I know that this is a 10.5.3 issue because everything worked fine in 10.5.2 and everything works fine when I boot up in Windows (ironic isn't it?).

  • Split screen becoming unstable? (iMovie 11)

Hello. I am having a problem with a split screen movie that I don't understand. I have two film clips of me drumming that were recorded on two camcorders simultaneously. I have imported them into iMovie 11, and used the split screen function to create a movie with both camera angles showing. I have muted the audio files on the camcorder foootage, and imported an MP3 file of the drum track recorded using Logic Express. I managed to get all three of these synched together and it worked wonderfully well.
I then decided to add an additional film clip, and some titles, before the split screen movie. At first this seemed to work fine also. However, when I played the whole project back, I found that about 75% of the way through the split screen section, one of the split screen clips suddenly jumped and then seemed to repeat itself - so of course the split movie no longer was synched.
What is happening here? I noticed that as I gradually 'undid' things, I found a point where the split screen movie was 'fixed again'. It seems as if inserting a clip and audio before the split screen section is what caused the problem. Have I violated some fundemental law of making split screen movies ('Thou shalt not insert a clip in front of it?'). Visually, the inserted clip appeared to be entirely seperated from the split clip, and I could not see why it would be interfering with the split clip.
    Many thanks.

I think it's a good thing you attempted to troubleshoot it, and got it working again. I'm thinking the problem is with iMovie being able to playback everything in the Preview window.
What I've seen from reading a lot of posts on this Discussion Group is iMovie can get overwhelmed with 'Effects' types of material add to the timeline. Not to say it can't handle them, but sometimes maybe certain combos really make it work harder than others. So this almost always shows up as an inability to do a live preview of the Project Timeline, but can sometimes be fixed by working backward to the point where the preview starts working again. There is no iMovie documentation or even third party books written that really lay out what is the upper limit of what you can do on the iMovie Timeline. So the only other thing to do is operate under the assumption that iMovie is working extra hard to play one of your bits of media while doing everything else on the timeline. So here's a file format, and frame dimensions best practice guideline to double-check.
    1. For video, you can pre-convert clips to the Apple Intermedia Codec and the Large frame size (960x540) iMovie uses internally to playback and allow you to edit accurately down to the frame level (1/30th of a second). One conversion program often recommended for this is MPEG Streamclip which can convert to .mov formatted internally as Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC)
    2. For audio, you can pre-convert sound to AIFF 16bit @ 48kHz, which is easier for iMovie to playback than a highly compress format, say like MP3 (which is adding to the workload of iMovie as it tries to do a live preview). You can convert in Logic or any other audio program you like. Side benefit to 16bit @ 48kHz is that's often the sound sample rate of the embedded audio in video shot on most consumer brand camcorders on the market. It will make it easier to match sync when sampe rates of sound clips = sample rate of video sound
    3. Lastly one thing that might help workaround the limit of iMovie's Live Preview playback is to export that well synced up split screen/audio combo to a new video clip. Just go to Share Menu > Export Movie... (choose Large Size) and save it to the desktop. Re-import that finished clip, and drag it into a new Project, start adding all the clips you want in front of that clip and it won't go out of sync as it's a monolithic video clip now with the video/audio locked to one another.
