  • What if I disconnected the fan..?

    I currently only use my eMac as an additional internet source....so a lot of the time I'm using my eMac to stream audio from net radio stations.
    So what would happen if I disconnected the fan so that it would be quieter and not as loud...?...or is there a way to "slow" down the fan speed so that it is quieter..?
    OSX 10.3.9
    700 Mhz
      Mac OS X (10.3.9)   1 GB Ram

    I recently added a post about the Zalman Fanmate 2 which is a speed controller that you can add to the fan to slow it down.
    I bought one about a year ago but a lot of people scared me off using it with ill informed posts like the ones in this thread.
    My two emacs were really driving me crazy with their noise. It's pretty easy to fix and the fanmate cost me about $10.
    The emac collects a lot, (a real lot) of dust inside it this contributes to a noisy mac and it obviously reduces the capacity of the fan to cool the internal components. Now cleaning an emac is not the sort of thing the average owner will do because if you talk to a technician they will scare you off by telling you about the dangerous voltage.
    It's quite safe as long as you take normal precautions and the amps (which is what kill you) is not really that high, unlike a microwave oven.
    It's easy to take the cover off, just put it face down and remove all the bolts. You need lift the cover off a few inches and you will see a tiny plug that is connected to the power switch. You need someone to help you support the cover while you unplug this switch, then just take the back off.
    You will probably see great piles of dirty crap everywhere. Now logic tells me that Apple know that users are not going to open it themselves and they are also not going to take it to a shop and spend $50 to have it cleaned, so inevitably mosst emacs will be running with dirty and un efficient circulation.
    So Apple have obviously overdesigned the fan so that it still cools the emac when it's dirty inside.
    This is why it is perfectly safe to reduce the fan speed especially in a clean emac.
    So the first thing you should do is get one of those car vacuum cleaners, or some other small cleaner and gently suck out all the crap, being careful not to touch any of the components. In fact although I did not do this it would not be a bad idea to let the emac sit unplugged overnight to let any residual voltage discharge.
    After installing the Zalman Fanmate I was able to reduce the fan speed to a point where it was almost unable to be heard and the exit temperature at the fan only went up from 95 to 99 degrees Farenheit.
    Currently I'm putting a pdf together with pictures to explain how to wire up the fanmate which is a little tricky because the plugs don't match the emac so they have to be shaved a bit and also the wires have to be changed around. But the difference it makes is unbelievable.

  • Sometimes my iPad1 locks up and has the flat battery graphic after charging all night, but will not work until you disconnect the charger, then it reboots and the battery is fully charged and works normally

    Sometimes my iPad1 locks up and has the flat battery graphic after charging all night, but will not work until you disconnect the charger, then it reboots and the battery is fully charged and works normally.
    It has only happened for the last month or so
    Also, sometimes it drops out of apps, ie facebook etc. just like you have hit the stop button

    Who replaced the battery? If it wasn't Apple the replacement is probably bad also. Either that, or the logic board is bad.

  • Can I disconnect the external hard drive even if Time Machine is set to back up every so often?

    I noticed that Time Machine backs up the system ever so often.  What happens if I disconnect the external hard drive I'm using as the back up and Time Machine tries to initiate a back up?  Will it corrupt anything?

    As long as you properly eject the drive before unplugging it, TM will detect that is no longer mounted and will not do anything until you plug it back and OS X mounts the drive again.
    TM was designed with the knowledge in mind that many people would be using it with laptops, and thus inherently unplugging and plugginh in their TM backup devices many times.

  • Do I need a service call to disconnect the ONT from my house wiring after going from FIOS to VoIP?

    I recently converted from FIOS to cable phone service (VoIP) (my FIOS contract was up and the cable compan offered me a better deal over the next two years -- no complaints about FIOS itself). Since I converted, I've been having all kinds of problems with the phone service, and all of the problems exist only when I use the house wiring -- when I connect a phone right to the cable modem, it works perfectly. I disconnected the ONT's battery backup unit and unplugged it, but that caused me to lose the dial tone after a few seconds -- I got nothing, and then a fast busy (again, this happened only when I was connected to the house wiring -- it didn't happen when I used a phone that was connected directly to the cable modem). Putting the battery back into the ONT's battery backup and plugging it back in corrected that issue. Additionally, I don't get a triple beep when I pick up the phone if there's a voice mail, nor does the phone's display screen indicate that there is a message waiting. In short, it appears that the house wiring is still connected to Verizon's system. The cable company says the house wiring isn't connected to the old (analog) Verizon box outside the house, but it says it can't touch the ONT. Do I have to have Verizon come over to disconnect the house wiring from the ONT, or can I do it myself? If Verizon comes to do it, will I get charged? Thanks. David Ross {edited for privacy}

    The ONT should have a place for customer connections. Either a RJ-11 plug that can be unpluged or wires on red and green terminals that can be disconnected and isolated with tape or wire nuts. Sorry to see you go, I have been happy and will never go back. Well never is a long time.

  • Hi, I have a mac mini..all of a sudden when I wake it up in the morning it says I didn't disconnect y external properly and it will try to retrieve the information..it finally appearsbut it never used to say I should disconnect the external before...help

    Hello, my mac mini has suddenly started displaying a warning sign when I wake it up..saying I didn't properly "eject" a device... It is referring to my external/backup hd {on which I store music files, photos, back up files, etc}.  It has never happened until yesterday... and I have had the hd hooked up for over a year.  Each night I just put my mini to sleep and when it wakes in the morning everything is fine... the only time I ever disconnect the external hd is when I completely shut down or unplug...the procedure then has been to turn off the mini...then disconnect the external hd and unplug it. This has always worked fine, then suddenly it says I haven't properly disconnected the external hd... I don't know what to do... am I supposed to use the eject button now before I shut down...and how can I do that... it will state that it is not able to be ejected because it is in use {the rotating photos in my monitor background are stored on the external hd}.  I am puzzled... don't want to lose the info on my external hd...but I need to be able to put my mini to sleep. Help, please.

    Have the pics allways been used off the external drive?
    Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
    Is Spotlight indexing that drive, or is it used by Time Machine?

  • How to disconnect the database connection using crystal report

    Post Author: cp_pramodu
    CA Forum: Crystal Reports
    Hi All,
    We have developed an application using .Net and Crystal Reports 10 for generating Adhoc reports from Business system (db sybase 12). We are using the below mentioned script for opening rpt files.
    Try
           ReportDocument1.Load(sReportName)
           For Each table In ReportDocument1.Database.Tables
                  ' Get the TableLogOnInfo object.
                  logonInfo = table.LogOnInfo
                  ' Set the server or ODBC data source name, database name,
                  ' user ID, and password.
                  logonInfo.ConnectionInfo.ServerName = sReportServerName
                  logonInfo.ConnectionInfo.DatabaseName = DBName
                  logonInfo.ConnectionInfo.UserID = UserName
                  logonInfo.ConnectionInfo.Password = Password
                  ' Apply the connection information to the table.
                 table.ApplyLogOnInfo(logonInfo)
    Next
    'Me.Cursor = Cursors.WaitCursor
    Me.CrystalReportViewer1.ReportSource = ReportDocument1
    'Me.Cursor = Cursors.Default
    Catch ex As Exception
    'Response.Write(ex.Message)
    Finally
    Me.Cursor = Cursors.Default
    'ReportDocument1.Close()
    'ReportDocument1.Dispose()
    End Try
    Each time user opens the report a new connection is established to the database, can we disconnect the connection established from crystal reports, while closing crystal report. At the same time i want to setup an Idle time for these connections. In database level, i will not be able to set idle time in database level, as it affect our electronic channels.
    Waiting for a reply.
    Thanks & Regards,
    Pramodu. C. P

    Hi,
    If you are reworking the application can you not build in the functionality to re-establish a connection if there is a failure? That is, a submission from the application server to the database server detects a failure, etc. and then re-establishes the connection. If you need a more frequent check than during a user-initiated roundtrip, you may be best served by using the "dummy query" technique on some time interval.
    From my understanding using HA Event Notification would require a RAC database (plus a multi-threaded application and services correctly configured on the RAC-side).
    In the documentation I see this:
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/appdev.102/b14250/oci09adv.htm#sthref1495
    "Applications must connect to a RAC instance to enable HA event notification."
    In any case, this has the potential to be a bit complicated...
    Regards,
    Mark

    My iPad2 no longer connects to my home wifi network but there is no problem connecting to other saved wifi networks. Currently using iOS8.0.2. with storage capacity of 12.2Gb but only 147Mb free. Disconnecting the router and rebooting the iPad worked briefly as a temporary fix but not anymore

    You could try this
    Temporarily disable security on your home network
    See if the iPad connects
    If it does then reset the security - with the same or different password

  • I my harddrive with my photo library went bad, but I have the photos on my ipad, ipod and iphone.  How to I get those photos back into iphoto on my macbook?

    The external drive with my photo library went bad, but I have the photos on my ipad, ipod and iphone.  How to I get those photos back into iphoto on my macbook?

    Are the photos you want to send back to your mac on your iPad, iPod, iPhone saved to the camera roll? If you have photos in other albums (not camera roll) share them to the camera roll.
    Then connect your device via USB and lauch iPhoto. You will see your device as a camera in iPhoto.  Import those photos like you would import from a camera.

    Wondering if anyone can help my Mac OS X 10.8.5 crashes after I disconnect the thunderbolt display.

    When I go to use it without the thunderbolt display it crashes - 4 times in one day, which really isn't ideal when your freelancing.
    I've checked my log files and I have a list of panic reports. I'm not too sure what I'm supposed to be looking for, but each of the reports refer to the graphics control. I've read online it might have something to do with the display sleep, so I've reset that.

    Hi Chloebat,
    I'm sorry to hear you are having issues with your MacBook Pro. If you continue to have intermittent but persistent crashing issues with your Mac, possibly related to the display, you may find the troubleshooting steps outlined in the following article helpful:

  • Itunes won't open unless I disconnect the network/internet, why?

    My Itunes won't open (after clicking the icon and seeing it running in task manager) until I disconnect the internet connection.  How do I fix this?  I have the latest version of Itunes and Quicktime installed.

    a few questions before proceeding.
    are you getting an error message? if so, what does it say? include error message numbers if you're getting any.
    or are you getting no error messages whatsoever when you try to launch itunes?
    if you're getting no error messages whatsoever, do you just see the wee hourglass for a few seconds, and then nothing? if so, do you also have Norton Internet Security 2005 installed on that PC?
    or are you seeing a brief "flash" of the itunes license screen (and then nothing)? if so, do you also see similar behavior when you try to launch your QuickTime?
    or is it more that your itunes library screen appears, and then "freezes" (even without an ipod connected), and when you check on that in Task Manager, it says "Not responding" in there?

  • Do you have any ideas on how I may resume my TV volume to full capability after disconnecting the HDMI cable and Macbook Pro to watch DVD's somehow my tv volume got turned down and I can't get it to restore fully. Any constructive ideas?

    I  used the HDMI cable from my Macbook Pro to my Panasonic TV to watch DVD's but I had no sound, so I used the community suggestion in going to system preferences>sound etc. followed the instructions and got great sound in fact very loud to my TV so I turned down the volume from my TV remote control. After watching the DVD's I disconnected the HDMI from my TV and realized for some reason my TV volume now is not returning to it's full volume even though I've tried to turn it to it's maximum. Any constructive assistance is truly appreciated. Thanks.

    Hey, it's a simple fix that should give most people what they want until there is full VZW support: the ability to use their card with the VZAM software.  I didn't see anyone else offering that suggestion...  If you don't want to use it, you don't have to.
    At the very least, this does seem to prove the theory that this is an issue with the 32/64bit compatability that some have refuted.
