Is EJB pooling related with flyweight pattern ?

SCEA training exam from www.javaqueries.com says that
Bean pooling allows container to use beans as flyweight.
My opinion is that flyweight pattern allows to create an object (flyweight) with some common state. All other objects have references to the flyweight instead of having many copies of a common state.
Do you see any similiarity with EJB pooling ?

A container is pooling stateless session beans in a way that is very similar to the flyweight pattern.
The flyweight pattern describes situations where you need a fine granularity in your objects but instantiating all of these objects would be too costly to realize in terms of main memory or execution time. The solution is, instantiate only as many objects that do differ in their "intrinsic" state and share the instances all over the references. GOF have a simple yet powerfull example: Think of flyweight objects as the letters in a Texteditor. Instantiating each letter as a single object would be overkill. Just instantiate one object for each letter of the alphabet and reference these objects where needed in the text flow. The same for stateless session beans. Only instantiate beans that are different and share references to the same bean every time a create method is called for a stateless session bean.
That is very contrary to the statefull session beans or entity beans so these can not naively be implemented as flyweight. But maybe there are some special extension to the flyweight pattern so that they can?
Hope that helps...

  • Flyweight Pattern use with multiple GUI components

    Hi,
I am creating a simple application and I would like your advice on wether I should use the flyweight pattern or not.
My application is essentially a GUI front to a repository of small images. The GUI (in its simplest form) is a single window that will display all the images with their names in a clickable thumbnail format. The user will be able to select an thumbnail icon, drag it and move it around pretty much like the icons on your computer desktop.
The easiest way to do that is probably to load each image and its name into a JLabel, add it in a JFrame and write just few lines of code (say by extending the JLabel class) to handle mouse pressed/dragged events in order to move the label around. The rest will be taken care of by the swing functinality (e.g. painting etc).
However, I am considering using the flyweight pattern for efficiency but I am not sure if it is appropriate. So far I have seen simplistic examples of its use (apart from JTree) where the pattern is used to paint dozens of lines on the screen or the borders of components. But what happens if instead of lines or borders the objects in question are interactive GUI components such as my thumbnails? how does the flyweight pattern work in this case?
For example if I create just a single JLabel and use it to paint all my icons that's great! but what happens with mouse events? what happens when I want to drag a thumbnail over another one and how the partial repainting of the thumbnail below should be handled?
Am I missing something here, or in order to implement the flyiweight pattern in this case I will have to write endless lines of code to replicate the functionality that swing arleady provides in each JComponent? (e.g. targetting of mouse events, repainting etc)
    Cheers,
    Kyri

I don't think Flyweight applies, because you really don't want to share any UI component that generates events unless the response is the same for all of them.
If you read Flyweight, I think it was intended for things like caching the first 128 Integers, etc. - think finite, countable, immutable things. I don't think UI elements apply.

  • Filling an object with a pattern without distortion?

    I have this camo pattern:
wich already tiles seemlessy but when i turn it into a swatch it won't tile. it distorts the pattern and blows it up instead of using it as is and tiling:
what is the problem here? can i scale it in some option menu? can i control the orientation? im creating a vector based logo, is this the right way to go about filling the object with this pattern?
i want it to be scaled and tiled. what is the best way to go about it? what would u do? thanks in advance

yup i thought so. it HAS to be vector based.
it does not have to be vector, it can be jpeg or gif, but it has to be embedded...as for not using it in a logo, Scott can explain that.
    255x247 px
the object is any size as its a vector. How are u filling yours? photoshop then a clipping mask?
I meant the size of the camo image in relation to your vector object, not the actual size in pixels.
in this sample I grabbed a GIF, embedded it, dragged it to the swatches palette, sent the image to back, then filled both the small object and the big object with the gif-embedded swatch, just to illustrate what happens with the size position.

  • Activating EJB Pooling

    Hello:
I am a novice to Weblogic.
Is there a property setting that will enable/disable object pooling and database connection pooling?
Do we have to specifically code our application logic to make use of these core infrastructural features of weblogic?
Any insight you can provide will be much appreciated.

  • Calling Glassfish jdbc Datasorce in EJB 3.0 with @Resource annotation.

I tried EJB 3.0 with netbeans and glassfish and "{color:#ff0000}+_ORACLE_+{color}". I wanted to link the oracle database to GLASSFISH server and I followed the instructions. After I clicked 'ping' button, it displayed as *{color:#339966}'PING SUCCEED".{color}*

Frank, yes, I can modify if it is necessary the datasource but, how can I say in the xxxx-jdbc.xml not to use JTA transactions when this data source is called inside a ejb 3.0 method?

  • A Tip for using EJB 3.0 with WebLogic Ant Tasks

I started out writing this up as a problem, but then I found the answer so I'm, posting a tip instead.
When I tried to write an EJB [stateless] using EJB 3.0 in my legacy Weblogic ear project I started getting this error:
    <pre>
No EJBs found in the ejb-jar file 'test'. Please ensure the ejb-jar contains EJB declarations via an ejb-jar.xml deployment descriptor or at least one class annotated with the @Stateless, @Stateful or @MessageDriven EJB annotation.
    </pre>
This is why: wlcompile will put the class files in the App-Inf/classes directory unless it finds an ejb-jar.xml file in the META-INF directory for the module it is working on. With EJB 3.0, I wasn't using an ejb-jar.xml file because it was unnecessary. Later, Appc runs and it complains <b>because there are no classes module directory, they went into the shared ear folder instead.</b>
Here's I how it working again: Use javac [not wlcompile] to compile the EJB 3.0 module and make sure that the class files go into the correct module directory. Then you can use wlappc to generate all the associated files for the EJB. I have sucessfully deployed an ear file that uses both EJB 2.x and EJB 3.0 with this approach.
I wish Weblogic's own ejb3.0 sample application used their split directory deployment.
    Good Luck.
    John Aronson

    Hi John,
I am working on development an enterprise application using EJB 3.0 on Weblogic 10.
While developing, I am keeping all my classes (from ejb's as well as web) into APP-INF/classes directory. It is working fine for Web and ejb 2.0 packages, but ejb 3.0 packages, I get the following error when I keep my ejb 3.0 beans classes in APP-INF/classes directory.
No EJBs found in the ejb-jar file 'customer'. Please ensure the ejb-jar contains EJB declarations via an ejb-jar.xml deployment descriptor or at least one class annotated with the @Stateless, @Stateful or @MessageDriven EJB annotation.
One solution is to keep the classes under customer ejb directory, but I wan tto keep all the classes in APP-INF/classes directory so that when using Eclipse IDE I can output all compiled sources into APP-INF/classes directory.
Has anyone faced this situation? Any suggestions to fix this issue?

Instead of the move statement you need to use the append work area to internal table statement. you need to have the same structure for the work area and the internal tbale.
Then use the modify data base table from internal table statement.

    Hi,
May be just for viewing, try downloading from SE80 transaction from the others option.
Here just try issuing the print, it will generate the spool.
Now using the spool, download to your desktop as required. It will have all the information regarding the attributes, fields, elements everything.
The only issue is, may be you need to take all the screens separately.

The question is too vague to be answered. It's a design decision that needs more details.

    Hi Venkatesh,
Thnx a lot for the reply. This has almost solved my problem, however there's one thing left. when I'm trying to take a print out after exporting the info into an excel sheet, the information really looks scattered, i.e.,  is there a way where we can go ahead and get the info in a rather unscattered manner.
I've tried to take a print directly without actually transferring the info into an excel sheet, then each of the vendor is printed in a separate page, which again they feel is a problem.
So, if you have an idea pls suggest.
    Thnx again for the information.
