Is it possible to grow a partition on XServe?

We are using iSCSI initiator on OSX 10.4.8 to connect to a SAN and wanted to grow an existing partition. SAN can easily assigne additional blocks, but don't know how to grow the partition without erassing its contents.
Please help. Many thanks.
G4 Tiger 10.4.6   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Yes, it's possible. However, the functionality is rather new, and it's not documented too well. In fact, I don't know that it's documented at all -- the man pages don't seem to show it.
But this functionality is what's used by the Boot Camp GUI tool to resize the disk to allow for a Windows partition.
Anyway... the command you want is:
diskutil resizevolume
Try it from the command line and you'll see a list of options.
I'll say -- you should have a current backup before you do this... if you screw something up or enter the commands in the wrong order you could easily blow away the whole volume.
edit: Perhaps I spoke too soon. There's this note that says it's only available on an Intel-based system with the GPT partition scheme:
resizeVolume is only supported on GPT media with a Journaled HFS+ filesystem.
A size of "limits" will print the range of valid values for the current filesystem.
So if it's an Xserve G5 you're probably out of luck.

  • When upgrading to Lion from SL, is it possible to grow the partition?

The partition in which Snow Leopard resides needs to be larger.  Is it possible when upgrading to Lion to make it bigger?  Is there another way to grow the Snow Leopard partition w/o migrating to Lion?

You have 4-5 internal drive bays.
Extra drive sleds are also sold so you can swap out drives (powered down of course, no hot swap).
Lion creates a recovery partition - and if you install Lion to its own drive it will be fine, then Setup Assistant will run on first restart and import your files.
There are a few more things to look out for on Mac Pro generally, software, drivers, and hardware.
As for using 20%,  200GB, what some people do is move all the non OS/Apps items to a 2nd media/data/user account hard drive.
Limiting the OS to the outer 25% insures reduced seeks and that it uses the outer faster tracks.
If you use RAID, that is another concern.

  • Is it possible to make a partition in Windows 7 and then place OS X on that partition?

My employer just gave me a new MBP 13" with Windows 7 on it.  It has bootcamp running, but no option to boot in Mac OS.  IT dept. said they deleted Mac OSX Lion due to security concerns (?).  In any case, as I travel quite a bit and have and ipad and iphone, I would like to use Mac OSX for personal use and Windows 7 for work.
Is it possible to make a partition in Windows 7 and then place Mac OSX Lion on the partition so that I do not need to reinstall Windows?   I know it would be possible to wipe the HDD and then add Mac OS, then bootcamp, then Windows 7, but adding again would get my IT dept involved which would put me back to square one.
    Any help would be appreciated!!
    JF

Ok let me ask you IF the IT department of your workplace does NOT want OS X installed on "THEIR" (The Companies) computers because of what they think is some type of security issue why are you trying to go against their wishes and install OS X on a computer that is NOT owned by you.
That could cost you your job.
If you continue down this path you will screw up the Windows install and have to take the system back to the IT department to get it fixed. What do you think they will say at that point?
Do as you like but you would be better off just buying your own Mac computer if you are set on using OS X as your personal operating system.

  • Possible to swap multiple partitions into a table?

    Hi,
We are using partition exchnage to swap individual partitions into table which then backed up.
This being done one partition at a time.
Is it possible to swap several partitions of a tabel in one go.
    using Oracle 11.2.0.3
partioned by date, one partition of reach day.
Is it possible say to move the last 7 days partitions into the other table for backup using partition exchange?
    Thanks

    >
    No.
If the goal is to back up the data why not just use expdp to export the data for all seven partitions at once? Then drop the partitions.
If you only use one regular table for the exchange you would have to start with an empty table, swap one partition, backup the table, truncate the table, swap the next partition and so on.
Or you could create a table with seven empty partitions and swap the 7 partitions one at a time and then backup the new partitioned table.
Or you could create seven tables and swap each one with a partition and then backup all seven tables.
    Too many choices.

  • Is it possible to resize the partitions without losing data?

    I have following issue:
I have dual-boot Arch with Windows XP. I created 4 partitions: 40GB XP's system disk (ntfs), 80GB ntfs data disk, 1GB swap and 25GB Linux partition.
But I am running XP so rarely, that it is frustrating, that I have most of my data on ntfs partition... I'd like to wipe out that 80GB ntfs, resize the system ntfs partition up to for example 60GB, and add the remaining 60GB to my linux ext3 partition (because I'm running out of free space recently...).
Has anyone done something like this, and how safe it is (if possible at all)
Yes, I have read this: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Res … _partition, and a few more.
I just don't have time to reinstall both systems (especially I would not like to install Windows, because I'd rather install Vista from my recovery disk, than hack the XP to work again...), and if some issues are likely to appear, then I'll give it up for now .

It's trivial using gparted, but as with any similar operation, you run the risk of losing data - so you'd better backup.

  • Grow Windows Partition using BootCamp or 3rd party application

    Hi,
My client is using a MacBook Pro with Mac OS X Leopard and Windows Vista 32 bit. The client uses Windows most of the time.
My question is, can I grow the Windows Partition using BootCamp or a 3rd party app without having to reinstall Windows?

    Hi,
best way to enlarge the BootCamp partition is the useage of WinClone http://twocanoes.com/winclone/ which also is a great backup app for BootCamp Windows.
Here are the step-by-step instructions on how-to do this: http://www.twocanoes.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=515 (Under *My current Windows partition is the wrong size, and I want to make it larger. How do I do this?* )
Other applications which claim that hey can resize BootCamp Windows partitions are iPartition and Drive Genius, but I never have used them.

  • Is it possible to merge ext4 partitions?

I would like to know if it's possible to merge two ext4 partitions to create one ext4 partition with files untouched. I have / and /opt on separate partition and would like /opt to be on the same partition as /. Is it doable without system format?

Thanks. I'll give it a shot. What Live CD do You recommend?
Can you write a very short tutorial about mounting drives? (I'm afraid I'd mount them in read-only mode or something like that propably )
    PS.: My fstab:
    # /etc/fstab: static file system information
    # <file system> <dir> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
    none /dev/pts devpts defaults 0 0
    none /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0
    #Linux drives
    UUID=1e68d1ae-5f08-4a45-92f3-d5a9b3720902 / ext4 defaults 0 0
    UUID= swap swap defaults 0 0
    UUID=9d234111-34f5-4e05-b690-e2e724ac2cfd /home ext4 defaults 0 0
    UUID=08d10b10-cea7-4ade-8041-99ae46e61b9a /opt ext4 defaults 0 0
    #USB in VirtualBox
    none /proc/bus/usb usbfs auto,busgid=108,busmode=0775,devgid=108,devmode=0666 0 0
Yeah, I know, swap isn't working. I would like to get rid of it entirely (I have enough RAM), so another good reason to use Live CD.

  • Is it possible to have multiple partitions on my hard disk drive and use Bootcamp to install Windows?

    Hi all,
Here is my question: I have MBP early 2011 and was trying to install Windows 8 using Bootcamp but the option to install Windows is grayed out so I can’t click the box next to “Install or Remove Windows 7.” Is this because I have multiple partition on my hard disk drive? Is there anyway I can install Windows 8 using Bootcamp without deleting my partitions on my hard disk?
    Few more details:
    Mountain Lion 10.8.2
    Bootcamp 5.0.0
    Thanks for your response

You can't create a Boot Camp partition on a drive you've already partitioned, and you can't install Windows 8 through Boot Camp at this time.

  • Possible to use interval partitions to drop old partitions?

Interval partitions can add new partitions and I can do a range by date. This is helpful. However, lets say I have alot of tables in my database and I need to keep data for different lengths of time in different tables. Can I set something in the intervals to drop older partitions?
I don't think I can, but I thought I would ask. I can do this with code. However, if oracle does it for me, I don't want to do it myself.

Can not be done but you can use the HIGH_VALUE column, or the PARTITION_POSITION columns to make decisions.
Just remember that you can never drop the root partition so build the initial partition such that it is very small and not used.

  • Re: Is it possible to use recovery partition from 2nd drive?

    Hello everyone,
My question is as the title states. Basically I am planning to install a SSD as primary drive and use my original Toshiba drive as secondary drive from ODD drive with an adapter. My concern is will I be able to use the recovery partition of the second drive and if I ever need to go back to out-of-box state will it format and install everything on my SSD or the original HDD?
    Btw my laptop is L755-1DR.
    Thanks,
    DJ_TLG

I cannot say for sure but Im 99,9999% sure this will not work. When you change hardware platform (SSD and HDD) HDD recovery wizard will not be able to find recovery image due to missing specific markers.
Create recovery DVD disc and problem is solved. Of course do it with original notebook hardware configuration and factory settings.

  • Is it possible to make two type of partitions onto an external drive?

    Hi,
I'm on an intel iMac using Tiger and I know to back up my hard drive I need to choose the GUID partition and Mac OS Extended (Journaled) in order to be able to boot from the partition.
So if I make 4 partitions is it possible to make 3 partitions GUID Mac Extended (Journaled) and then make 1 that is Apple Partition Map? I tried it and I couldn't figure it out using my Tiger Install disk and selecting Disk Utility option.
My sister is using a Powerbook PC G4 also using Tiger and I want to make a bootable copy for her as well but just wondering if this can be done?
    S.

    Niel,
Thanks, so if I format it all as APM I can either clone OSX 10.4.11 which I have on my internal now. If I do a backup of my intel and Powerbook PC both of those will already have Tiger on them so do I need to do another Tiger install on each of those partitions?
Also by doing it this way I can't boot from a parition onto my intel can I?
Guess I'll have to weigh whose system is more important or just back up her drive as GUID on my computer and she can restore from it if she has too but won't be able to boot from it.

  • Boot Camp: Is it possible to expand the size of the partition after install

I loaded Boot Camp several years ago and did not allow enough hard drive space for the Windows side. Is it possible to expand the partition without erasing everything and starting from scratch?

    A. Backup first no matter what - both partitions - so you can restore if needed.
    B. Try Paragon CampTune
If it was several years, then it was under Tiger and I would definitely backup and reformat your drive with 10.5.7. Tiger does not support resizing, and systems upgraded from Tiger to Leopard w/o reformat often ran into trouble, so it is more likely. And because they were using Boot Camp 1.4 beta.

  • Tecra S3 M780 and Partition Magic not possible?

    Hi All..
Hope someone can help my out here.
Already tried the search but didn't find an answer.
Ok, i have an hard disc (100 GIG) and I would like to make partitions on it to store my data on a different partition as my OS.
Problem is Partition Magic won't run.
I get an error that there is an partition on my harddisc that has no driveletter.
I checked it and it's correct.
    On the hard disc are:
C: allmost the entire disc, Primary
    No driveletter: 16 MB Primary
    No driveletter: 8 MB
I think the 16 MB Primary is the problem.
Can someone tell me the reason or purpose for that partition?
Has it something to do with recovery?
Is it possible to delete every partition on the hard disc, make new partitions (C,D and E) and then use the recovery cd to install Windows on C?
Or will the recovery cd automaticly change the hard disc's partition's to its default?
I already tried to make an Image from C: with Gost or Powerquest but It won't work either.
My intention was to make partitions and then put the image back.
    Regards Rene

    Hi
The first question is hard to answer. I don't know what that partition is for. I don't think it is for anything special.
If you want to divide the HDD into seperate partitions and can accept to recover the unit, then the Recovery CD can help you.
Just boot up on it like normal, but choose Advanced recovery instead if Standard.
That will give you the opportunity to manually set the size to assign the C-partition (where the OS will be installed).
Once done with the installation, just go into diskmanager, add a new partition and format it.
    Tada! You're home.

  • List-range partition

    Hi Oracle Gurus,
I have a table with list partition, as the partitions are growing large I need to create subpartitions.
Is it possible to create a range subpartition under list partition. If yes I need that subpartition to be built on time not on date.
    Is it possible.

While range-list partitioning exists in 10g, list-range partitioning to the best of my knowledge does not exist. There are some new options in 11g but I can't remember what they are off the top of my head. You can check the on-line documentation to see what your partitioning options are
Your partitioning options will depend on what version of Oracle you are using. Also remember that you need the licence to use the partitioning feature
