Is it possible to "recompress" a compressed file?

Hi, all. A couple of years ago I made a project in iDVD and archived it to a .img file thinking I'd never have to see it again. Well, lo and behold I've been asked for a copy of that project. The problem is the .img file is 5.08 GB, too large for a standard single-layer DVD-R. (I'm not sure how this project could possible have burned to a single-layer DVD in the first place, but that's a mystery for another day).
Anyway, does anyone know of a way to "recompress" this 5.08 GB .img file for use on a SL DVD, or do I need to get a double-layer DVD-R?

Great !
You can extract the video and audio streams from the DVD image and re-encode just your audio to make all fit in a DVD5 without quality loss.
Do as follows:
- Use the free MPEG Streamclip to extract the MPEG2 video stream and the AIFF audio.
- Use COmpressor to encode the AIFF audio to Dolby 2 (AC3). Use any of the standard Dolby 2 presets from Compressor and change the following settings in the Dolby preset:
* Dialog Normalization: -31
* Compressor preset: None
- Create new DVDSP project and import the MPEG2 video and AC3 audio into a track and author your DVD.
You video will be untouched and you audio will be fine. You'll have to create a Menu if you want or just leave the track as First Play.
Hope that helps !

  • How to read compressed files from unix on 10gR2 EE?

    We have large historical data stored as text files on operating system and compressed because our free disk space is very limited. Rarely because of data quality or legal needs we need to read these information.
    So I thought of unix pipes(mknod), reading while uncompressing through a pipe similar to this example; http://www.orafaq.com/faqunix.htm#EXPORT
    but this method is very slow.
    Is it possible to SELECT these compressed files, maybe a custom Oracle driver for external tables you may heard of?
    Thank you.

    There are no oracle drives to read from an external zipped file. You could uncompress the file to a named pipe and read the sqlloader from the pipe:
    $ mknod fifo.dat p
    $ uncompress the file and redirect it to the > fifo.dat & #pseudocode
    Let SQLLDR read from the Named Pipe:
    sqlldr userid=scott/tiger control=load.ctl data=fifo.dat
    It isn't guaranteed to be faster, just convenient for you not to uncompress the complete file prior to perform the sqlload operation.

  • Editing a compressed file

    So say I have a project in 1080i60 and i compress it down to an MP4 or just a smaller .mov at H.264. Then I delete the original 1080i60 but I need to change the volume level or cut out a small part of the movie. If I put the compressed file in FCP and export it...will it have the same compressed quality? I know obviously it wont be better quality....what is the best way to export it to maintain the quality...knowing that since it is already compressed?
    Or the basic question...should you even edit a compressed file or just take your loss and re-edit the original 1080i60?

    If all you are doing is cutting, then you probably will not be recompressing. An easy way to tell is how long it takes to export. It it looks like it will take a long time, then it is probably conforming and recompressing the video. That is bad. But it might be possible to cut out a portion, and save as a self-contained movie rather quickly.
    You could try doing that with QT Pro, as it is sometimes clearer than FCP about saving video versus compressing video. Some codecs require conforming in FCP if you look at them funny.
    As far as audio, I'm guessing you would be able to extract the audio and video tracks, modify the audio, and add the tracks back together. Again, I personally would feel better about this kind of track manipulation in QT Pro.

  • Reading a Compressed File from a ZIP File, which is an entry of ZIP File

    Hello, Experts,
    Would it be possible somebody to help me with code example for the following problem?
    I want to read a compressed file from a ZIP file, which is an entry of ZIP File, without extacting/writing files on file system. Is this possible?
    Lets say we have a ZipFile1. There is ZipFile2 inside ZipFile1. And inside ZipFile2 is FileA. The scenario is reading FileA without extracting on file system.
    Thank you in advance for your help.
    Cheers
    RADY

    The classes you want to be using are java.util.zip.ZipInputStream and and ZipEntry from the same package. Construct the ZipInputStream with the input you have for the outer zip. Loop with ZipInputStream.getNextEntry until you find the inner zip you're looking for - that method returns a ZipEntry, and you get the name of the zip entry with ZipEntry.getName. Read the ZipInputStream from that point into some buffer, and read that buffer into a new ZipInputStream - rinse and repeat until you have the contents of the file in the zip in the zip...

  • I compressed Activity Monitor and deleted the compressed file in error. How do I get it back?

    In trying to reduce my CPU load, I compressed the Activity Monitor. Before I can use the compressed file, I mistakenly deleted it and now when I try to open it, I get the dreaded spinning wheel. After a long wait, I forced quit.
    What happened and how do I get Activity Monitor back?

    Never tamper with programs which come with the system. You could try downloading and applying the 'combo updater':
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
    However this won't help if Activity Monitor hasn't been updated since the initial release, which may well be the case. In that event you will need to reinstall Snow Leopard from your original install disks and then apply the combo updater again.
    Alternatively it may be possible to extract Activity Monitor from the installed disk by using Pacifist - no promises about that.

  • Compress files

    Hello!
    I have large pdf-batch files which are to be split into smaller files according to certain rules. The Adobe Acrobat SDK code is something like (performed in a loop):
    pdDocNew.Create( );
    pdDocNew.InsertPages( -1, batchFile, startpage, numberOfPages, 0 );
    pdDocNew.Save( (
    short ) Acrobat.PDSaveFlags.PDSaveFull | ( short ) Acrobat.PDSaveFlags.PDSaveCollectGarbage, ed.OutputFile );pdDocNew.Close( );
    The problem is that the file size of each newly created file is too large (1 200 kb). If I instead, manually opens the batch file and performs an Extract Pages, the file created is much smaller (40kb) so some kind of compression takes place in the code behind.
    Is it possible to retrieve the functionality of the "Document => Extract Pages" menu item from within the Adobe Acrobat SDK in any way?
    There will be about 18 milllions of files, so both new file size and compression rate are really important to me.
    Is it possible to optimize the batch files with batch commands instead? (In some files it seams like the fonts takes about 90 % of the size and in some the streaming content does.)
    Is it perhaps better to do this in a completely different way?

    If you are using 10g, there is a UTL_COMPRESS package that might be useful. I'm not sure what a .LST file is, though, so I'm not sure how useful Oracle's compression routines would be.

  • Is it possible to create a MPEG4 file that is still hi def?

    Hello, I'm new to Compressor, having just installed Compressor 3.5. I have a short Final Cut hi def (1080i) video file that my son wants to upload as a hi def file on youtube. He tried uploading the Final Cut file, but it was too large for youtube (over 3 gig), and apparently they requested a mpeg4 file. I messed with Compressor last night and created a 952 MB file using the Hi Def folder in Setting. I also created a 252 MB file using the MPEG4 folder in Settings. But somehow I don't believe that the MPEG4 file is hi def.
    Is it even possible to create an mpeg4 file in compressor that is hi def? If so, could you please tell me which setting to use?
    Thanks so much, Bob

    Does the 1280 X 720 indicate that it is definitely hi def?
    By definition (no pun intended), 'high definition' is any resolution greater than 'standard definition.' Standard definition video in NTSC is 720x480 (NTSC rectangular pixels or NTSC 640x480 square pixels). Standard definition in PAL is 720 x576.
    how is it possible to still have hi def, if the file is 1/9 the size of the original file?
    For a watered down version of compression, some of the information for each pixel's RGB values are thrown out during the compression process. For example, in MPEG-2 compression (commonly used for DVD and broadcast TV), the first frame is an independent or "I" frame, containing all the data for each pixel's RGB value. The next 14 frames only contain the data for each pixel that changed from the I frame or from the previous frame. This group of 15 frames is known as a GOP (group of pictures). The 16th frame is another "I" frame and consequently starts another GOP.
    In reality it's a heck of a lot more complex than that, but that's the basics of video compression. For a more detailed explanation, see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_compression

  • Unable to view Multi-page Tif G4 Compressed files

    Is any one aware of a product(free would be best); that will permit Mac (various operating system versions) desktops to view Tif image files?
    Tif file format we are using, the viewer must be able to view:
    G4 compression;
    Multi-page tif,
    Interestingly enough the Ipad's are able to view our compressed files without additional software, but the Preview application that comes on Mac's we have in house and employee's who have Mac's at home that tryingto use for work are not able to view our highly compressed images.
    We have software for our PC systems that permit the viewing/editing of our images without problems. Unfortunately, the software is not compatible with Mac's.
    No, their is no option to convert out TiF to a different compression, with our high volumn of scanning we need the high compression for our scanning of documents as is.
    The only work around we have is for staff that are using Mac's in order for them to view documents at home, internal staff must take the time to convert the files to PDF format.

    It's an HP P3005dn (duplex+network) printer. OS X simply recognized the printer on the network and set itself up accordingly (without the option of selecting PCL or Postscript). The Windows computers in the office, though, - ugh - it was ugly getting them set up. None of them would recognize the printer on the network, and couldn't even browse for it and find it. I wound up having to download Bonjour for windows, and set it up that way. I downloaded the drivers from HP.com, and believe I set them all up to print using PCL.
    It sounds like PCL v. PostScript may be the issue; is it possible to print using PCL on Macs?

    It is possible, yes. This characteristic is part of the AsyncOS, not the hardware appliance, so it will work with any device (hardware or virtual).

  • Is it possible to unzip a .xlsm file without corrupting it?

    Hello.
    I have had some success at actioning the following sequence of steps over a .xlsx file:
    1) Rename it to .zip.
    2) Unzip it.
    3) Make changes across the unzipped XML files with a search and replace tool.
    4) Rezip it.
    5) Rename it back to .xlsx.
    6) Open it up in Excel, without loss of integrity (and with the replacements from the search and replace tool intact).
    Does anyone know if this is possible with a .xlsm file? If I eliminate step 3) (i.e., in order to round-trip without making any edits, just to prove that round-tripping works), Excel tells me that the file has been corrupted when I try to open it up.
    While on the subject, does anyone know of a tool or method of automating the above 6 steps, so that I can action it over all my Excel files?
    Many thanks.
    Keith

    The .xlsx and .xlsm files behave the same in this respect.
    I suspect you had an error in your process.  In particular, make sure that no new files were created while making changes and that the changes were made properly.
    You can use many zip/unzip tools, including Java's jar tool (cross platform, client or server).
    Example:
    Start with a spreadsheet such as updateTest.xlsm.
    Create a subdirectory such as updateTest and cd to that.
    Run
      $ jar xvf ../updateTest.xlsm
    Then run
      $ jar cvfM ../updateTest01.xlsm *
    The above example leaves all the xml files in the subdirectory and the resulting updateTest01.xlsm opens in Excel without warnings.
    Note: the “M” option for jar is essential to avoid adding a manifest.
    The “v” option is optional.
    It is possible to modify the xml files between the above two steps, but again, make sure there are no new files and make changes properly.
    The file [Content_Types].xml tracks the expected files, so these and only these should be present.
    For changing the content, here is an excellent article: Editing Data in an Excel 2007 Open XML File with VBA (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd819387(v=office.12).aspx)
    In summary, you can edit numbers in your xl/worksheets/sheetX.xml files, but strings are centralized in xl/sharedStrings.xml.
    Cells with strings include an index into the sharedString.xml table.
    Note that there is a bug in the above article: any new strings must be added to the end or else they will throw off the indexing for other references.
    As a hack, you can include dummy strings in your spreadsheet and then update sharedStrings.xml.
    Note that with the java.util.zip package, you can create the files and zip files programmatically.
    This could be better for large numbers of updates.  See
    http://java.sun.com/developer/technicalArticles/Programming/compression/.
     Other tools and approaches can be used as well.

  • After Compressing file with Compressor when somthing move in the picture

    After Compressing file with Compressor when somthing move in the picture , it will get a kinda interlaced in the edges of it , the orginal files was Uncompressed DV and I add subtitle on it and then used the 90 min best dvd preset for it .
    I really need some help .
    thanks a lot .

    I would take  a step back here before going further.  William's suggestion might very well clean up the library but something obviously did not go right and to start mucking about in the library might make things worst.
    For starters I'm surprised to see the folder structure you showed in your first post. Aperture stores managed masters (originals) by import date and time. The structure (in all libraries I've ever seen) looks like:
    So something seems wrong with your master folder.
    Also the three folders you showed the first and third are identical ( the middle one has the (1) added to which is how the OS handles duplicates in a folder) so this shouldn't even be possible, those folders should not be there.
    I'm wondering if this is something left over from your using Duplicate Annihlator. Do you have a copy of the library before you ran the merge and used DA on it? Would be interested to see what the master folder looks like.
    Finally when you ran the merge which library did you tell Aperture to use as the master, the one that was used to resolve conflicts?
    Again William's suggestion might be all you need to do but it would be good to figure out want went wrong before proceeding.
    regards
    Message was edited by: Frank Caggiano - A better first step might be to run the Aperture first aid tools, repairing and possibly rebuilding the library.

  • Problem in Compresses file.Not able to see the data in file

    Hi All,
    I am downloading file into application server.
    Using:
    OPEN DATASET file FOR OUTPUT FILTER 'compress'.
    OR
    DATA: l_command(100) type c.
       CONCATENATE 'compress ' p_file INTO lw_command SEPARATED BY space.
        ENDIF.
        CALL 'SYSTEM' ID 'COMMAND' FIELD lw_command.
    When I see the file content it contains junk characters.
    If I want to see the data Do I need to uncompress the file.
    con't we see the data without uncompressing the file?.
    Regards,
    vinod

    Hi,
    Uncompress is required to read the content of an Compressed file.
    OPEN DATASET DSN FOR OUTPUT FILTER 'compress'.
    OPEN DATASET DSN FOR INPUT FILTER 'uncompress'.
    The first OPEN statement opens the file so that the displayed data can be read into it in compressed form.
    The second OPEN statement opens the file so that the data is decompressed when it is read from the file.

  • HT201361 Is it possible to save the screenshot files to a different folder than desktop. How can I change the folder?

    Is it possible to save the screenshot files to a different folder than desktop (that is the default). How can I change the destination folder? Thank you, Sal

    To change the screenshot capture location to a new place on your Mac, first think of a location that would serve you properly. We like to place ours in a "Screenshot" folder located inside of the User's "Pictures" folder. To change the location to this new location, open the Terminal and enter the following command:
    defaults write com.apple.screencapture location /Users/[u]/Pictures/Screenshots/
    Replace "[u]" with the name of the user on your system. Once you have entered this command, let's restart the screen capture utility by restarting the SystemUIServer by entering the following command:
    killall SystemUIServer
    You can optionally log out and back in instead of entering this second command, thus restarting the SystemUIServer. Once restarted, all screen captures taken from here on out will end up in your /Pictures/Screenshots/ folder in the User's home folder on your Mac.

  • Is it possible to pickup a specific file from a folder?

    Hi
    I am wondering whether it is possible to pick a specific file from a folder. I have a shape where I have got a filename and I need to look for it in a folder.
    Is that possible?
    And how can I achieve this? The next step is to pick the file up and transfer it to another location. So basically in pseudo code I need to ask my defined folder with a filename as parameter. Get the file and move it to another folder.
    Suggestions are most appreciated. Thanks

    Assuming you are using orchestration, you could
    create an assembly, install it in the GAC, add a reference to it in your BTS
    project, and call it from an Expression shape to resolve the receive
    location. You would only really need one static method in a class. Be sure
    to add a reference to Microsoft.BizTalk.ExplorerOM.dll.
    Example:
    using Microsoft.BizTalk.ExplorerOM;
    namespace Phil
    public class OrchestrationHelpers
    public static string ResolveReceiveLocationName(string
    inboundTransportLocation, string receivePortName)
    BtsCatalogExplorer bts = new BtsCatalogExplorer();
    bts.ConnectionString =
    "SERVER=localhost;DATABASE=BizTalkMgmtDb;Trusted_Connection=True;Network
    Library=DBMSSOCN;"
    foreach (ReceiveLocation location in
    bts.ReceivePorts[receivePortName].ReceiveLocations)
    if (location.Address == inboundTransportLocation) return location.Name;
    return null;
    In your Expression shape within your orchestration, assuming a message
    called "MyMessage" and a string variable "receiveLocationName":
    receiveLocationName =
    Phil.OrchestrationHelpers.ResolveReceiveLocationName(MyMessage(BTS.InboundTransportLocation),
    MyMessage(BTS.ReceivePortName));
