Is Oracle 9i down?
While trying to get Spatial Database Engine set up to work with Oracle 9i on a Solaris 9 platform, I get the following. Does this mean that Sqlplus is working but Oracle itself is down?:
sqlplus "/as sysdba"
SQL*Plus: Release 9.0.1.0.0 - Production on Tue Jan 25 15:02:23 2005

SQL> grant execute on dbms_lock to public;

Could be... The message following copyright line is interesting.
With 9.2, connecting/login as sysdba, we have:
Connected. (ORACLE_SID not set)
Connected to an idle instance. (ORACLE_SID set but instance is not started, could be incorrect sid value)
Connected to: (this means we're good to go :) )
Oracle9i Enterprise Edition Release 9.2.0.5.0 - Production
With Connected to: you could still have an instance in nomount i.e. background processes started but no database. But then another ORA error will hit you.
I'm sure there are other possibilities as well.

I have an oracle testing instance on Windows NT. It went down every several months due to the same errors. The only difference is the control file number in the error message for every time. I fixed it by restarting the oracle service each time. Below is the error session in the alert log:
Sat Jul 01 16:57:12 2006
Errors in file D:\App\Oracle\admin\intrtest\bdump\intrtestCKPT.TRC:

Any idea or suggestion?

due to this, our database goes down, and it was currepted my Redo file as well. We have taken a Third party backup using named "Symentic". nybody have the idea, how can I avoid this error in future.

Oracle DB Down / Need Assistance
Hello,
When I try to start our database I am getting the following errors.
ORA-01172: recovery of thread 1 stuck at block 22880 of file 28
ORA-01151: use media recovery to recover block, restore backup if needed
Questions
1) Are there any way to resolve these errors?
2) If not, we have dmp.Z exports that are backed up daily. What is the best way to restore these?
Note, I am an Oracle Newbie, but a quick learn.
Thanks for your help in advance.
[email protected]Before performing a full recovery I suggest you see what object is stored in file 28 at block 22880. You can do this by querying dba_extents.
If the object is a user index then just drop and recreate the index.
If the object is a user table then if you can live with the contents of the table being different from you other tables then just drop and recreate this one table.
If the object is a SYS owned object you will probably need to go the full imp route.
Before relying on your exp you should check your export log and make sure the export did not fail and that you have a backup copy of the table data.

Oracle database down need help
My company is using a program called Digital Collections (DC4) from GMTI. We have an oracle database on the backend. Recently the server's raid array fan went out and we lost all 5 drives. We were able to recover some of the lost data from backup tapes but we can't seem to locate the oracle 8.0.5 install CD's. Now, I can only download 9i which as I understand will not access oracle 8 files. All the migration howto's start by dumping the data from oracle 8 and then importing to 9i. But if I don't have 8 running how can I dump the data? Does anyone know of a solution. Either a method or utility to dump the data from the raw files or a link to download 8.0.5 Any help will be greatly appreciated.
You can't attach oracle 8 version datafiles to 9i database or vice-versa. It was DBA's responsibility to keep the backups in case of disaster occurs at any time.
Check with your friends about the availability of oracle 8, you will get it, if you are lucky enough.

We have a client appliication making remote calls to weblogic (ejb, jms, etc.). When oracle goes down however, the client locks up, stuck in the remote ejb call. The ejb is likely stuck timing out on the sql connection.
Anyhow, this timeout is excessive. How can the client be made to take control again, if a remote ejb call is not 'answered' within x seconds?
BTW, it's not as though the first timeout is long and thereafter it times out quickly. Every time you look up the ejb, it is found, however the ejb method call takes very long to timeout, when discovering oracle is not available.

If Oracle DB Connection goes down,it should reconnect the DB again
Hi All,
I have a serious problem while running java process all the day. Sometimes I get following errors:
1. (***ERROR) java.sql.SQLException: OALL8 is in an inconsistent state.
2. (***ERROR) java.sql.SQLException: Io exception: Broken pipe
(***ERROR) java.sql.SQLException: Io exception: Broken pipe
(***ERROR) java.sql.SQLException: Closed Connection
3. (***ERROR) java.sql.SQLException: No more data to read from socket.
The above exceptions are not coming everyday.But sometimes it gives exceptions and because of that my java process will not run until it restarts the program.
I do know, because of oracle server down some of exceptions are coming. But what I wanted to do is if once the oracle server is up , my java application has to reconnect to the DB.
My idea is when java throws SQLException because of oracle server down, in the exception block it has to reconnect to the DB again by checking for right SQLERROR.
I am using JRE 1.4.2_10, JDBC Thin driver and Oracle 10g.
About Oracle DataSource am using JDBC 3.0 concepts which includes
OracleConnectionCacheManager and
Oracle DataSource
Can anybody help me on this to resolve the above exceptions.
Thanks in advance.Actually, we are implementing Fast Connection Failover in our
application. Wwhenever one server instance goes down, java has to
map to another instance by taking all the required connections and
when server backs up then oracle has to do load balancing with all
the server instances.So you do already solve connection problem, right?
In the Java application, it sends array of hundred records to oracle all
the time. Is it because of sending huge arrays it is giving exception
java.sql.SQLException: OALL8 is in an inconsistent state.
Please help me out in solving the exceptions am getting.i think the exception raise not because you sending a huge arrays,
but because the connection broken in the middle of sending array.
you can get another connection when that exception occurs.
i'm not sure... i hope this can help you about handling that exception :
boolean success = false;
// will repeatly get available any connection until your transfer successfull
// or datasource does not has connection available anymore.
while (!success && isConnectionAvailable()) {
Connection c = null;
// Statement s = null;
// ResultSet r = null;
try {
c = ds.getConnection();
c.setAutoCommit(false);
// send your array here
// only commit when all data sent
c.commit();
c.setAutoCommit(true);
success = true;
} catch (SQLException sqlEx) {
if (sqlEx.getErrorCode() == SERVER_DOWN) {
// not sure this is needed...
// when connection broken your partial sent data will not saved in db
// because we set off auto-commit.
// & actually calling rollback when connection is broken only raise
// another sql exception ;P
if (c.isValid(0)) c.rollback();
// log exception information
} finally {
// close result set
// close statement
DbUtils.closeQuietly(c);

Mandrake 8.0 & Oracle 8.1.7 install - seems OK
After much pains I seemed to have been able to install Oracle 8.1.7 and create a database. Have not tested anything else.
1- I have a fresh install of Mandrake 8.0
2- I follow instruction at http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/updates/2001/MDKA-2001-006.php3?dis=8.0 to update the glibc libraries. I use the MandrakeUpdate tools. This takes time to download even though I have fast cable modem
3- Now after the glibc update, runInstaller will work
4- Do not choose to create a database! Just install the software from Oracle
5- Down load the Oracle patch glibc-2.1.3-stubs.tar.gz from the same page where you get the RDBMS software
6- Unpack this at the Oracle HOME directory
7- Run the file ./setup_stubs.sh to patch Oracle executables
Now, you can run dbassist and create a database. Svrmgrl will now work and help to create a database.
I notice that the JRE software is unstable. DBASSIST crashed on me a couple of times and froze the X window environment.
It should be Ok to grab a set of files for a sample oracle database files (init.ora and use svrmgrl to create the database by hand.
Good luck! It's a pain on the neck as Linux and Oracle are like changing winds

I receive that message:

Please visit http://www.javasoft.com and install JRE version 1.1.8 or higher and try again.

What can I do, because I have installed jre-1.3.1?
Thanks!

Thanks
T.K.Hi Tarek,
I hope you might have resolved this issue by now.
Solution:
This issue seems that you have not given the correct path of the "Oracle Client" which will be 10.0G, rather giving the oracle software location of Oracle 11.2G. You need to download Oracle client 10G from marketplace from the same place where you have downloaded the master DVD installation media and provide this path.
