Is Solaris a Complete Server Operating System?

Does Solaris provide the facility to track the traffic of a hosted website?
That means if I use Solaris to run my webserver can I have the information (like how many people are visiting? From which countries?) about my visitors?
Thank you very much.

Yup, comes with apache, rename one file to turn on apache and it's off and running. I would tell you the name but you need to do some reading first based on your question, you'll come across the name as you read. If you run sol10 and use containers you can host a whole bunch of apache servers in their own virtual worlds with no danger of them messing with your global container.
You might want to rebuild it too so that you get the modules you want instead of the base setup but otherwise it's easy. Takes about 5 minutes once you have your index page put together and whatever files you want to serve.
You can get more information at apache.org, including source if you want the newest release and patches.
Have fun

You cannot upgrade Solaris (any version) by simply applying patches. You also cannot upgrade Solaris 10 via any sort of downloaded "upgrade" package.
You will need to download the current DVD/CD set, then boot from it. At that point, you will be offered the choice of upgrading your system.

  • Create image server operating system with Hyper-V and virtual machines

    Friends,
Need to replicate the environment they currently have, but wanted to optimize this operation by creating an image of windows server with Hyper-V and virtual servers already installed, what tool do I use? Can someone guide ???
    Dreyher

I recommend you separate the task of protecting the host from the task of protecting the guest VMs.
By "replicate the environment", do you mean backup the VMs in a recoverable state? or do you intend on migrating the VMs to another environment like another physical location? How much down time can you tolerate if any?
To backup the VMs use a VSS based backup solution. There's plenty out there, including Windows Server backup, Altaro, DPM, Veeam, and many more. This does not require installing agent on any of the VMs, and will not down the VMs during backup. Here's an
example Powershell script to backup all VMs on the local host:
    Install-WindowsFeature -Name Windows-Server-Backup
    $BackupTarget = "\\server\share"
    $WbTarget = New-WBBackupTarget -NetworkPath $BackupTarget
    $WBPolicy = New-WBPolicy
    Add-WBBackupTarget -Policy $WBPolicy -Target $WbTarget
Add-WBVirtualMachine -Policy $WBPolicy -VirtualMachine (Get-WBVirtualMachine) # Add all VMs on localhost
    Start-WBBackup -Policy $WBPolicy -Async
If the intent is VM migration from one location to another, there are plenty of tools to do so with minimal or no down time. Just bing it..

  • What changes are needed in Server Operating system using OPC with Labview

I am a novice trying to connect Labview into KepwareEX OPC server. I am using MS Windos XP on both sides. at first I could see no OPC server I checked with the Kepware and they suggested me to fix the DCOM configuration on the Server. at last I saw the OPC Server and their client connected to it.
When I try to assign a Datasocket connected to a control on Front panel in to OPC. System Browses and see the OPC server but after selecting the tag. when I run the software, connection Lamp gets red and this Error comes up ""Can't connect to OPC server. Registery Access denied" . the Kepware  quick client is working OK. and Labview got connected when I tested it on the same server. I think there is something wrong with Server OS configuration cause I can not See the Labview OPC Server too, which is installed but I am not using it, Can anybody help me ?

    Hello:
When you try creating a new I/O server and when you select OPC, you should be able to see the list of OPC servers installed in the system. You can select LabVIEW OPC and select a I/O item from the configure OPC client instance.
From what I understand you are able to connect from LabVIEW just fine. Are you able to use server explorer and connect to kepware? The following tutorial will step you through using OPC servers with LabVIEW.
    http://zone.ni.com/devzone/cda/tut/p/id/3742
DSC is LabVIEW add-on for developing your HMI/SCADA or high-channel-count data-logging applications. With the DSC Module, you can interactively develop a distributed monitoring and control system with tags ranging from a few dozen to tens of thousands. The following link has a TCP modbus presentation that you will find useful.
    http://www.ni.com/labview/labviewdsc/upgrade.htm
Please let us know the steps you are following to configure the OPC connections and post some snapshots. This will help in better understanding.

  • Installing Solaris 9 with other Operating Systems x86

Hi, I am new to Solaris world. I want to install solaris 9 on my home computer on which I've already installed Windows XP and RedHat Linux 9. I have a few questions regarding the installation process.
    (a) Is a primary partition necessary for installing Solaris 9 (I have only one primary partition and free space in extended partition)? Is there a way to boot Solaris 9 from a logical drive in the extended partition?
    (b) Will choosing the default option on the Solaris installation fdisk screen erase my previous partitions?
I will appreciate if anybody care to answer.

    hi sulemankm
solaris needs a primary partition, booting from a logical drive won't work.

  • Cannot monitor Windows Operating Systems

In the process of attempting a SCOM 2012 R2 deployment, I cannot get SCOM to monitor the Windows systems on which the management agent has been deployed.  I have installed the "Microsoft Windows Server" MP, as well as a bunch of other "server"
related MPs (i.e., DNS, AD, etc.)
Selecting the "Microsoft Windows Server" entry in the monitoring view shows all the entries I would expect to see, but none of the selections show any data being collected.  All of the Windows Updates have been applied and the systems rebooted.
I have searched this forum as well as the web, and haven't found anything that works.  I'm wondering what I've missed.
BTW, the SCOM server is clearly having issues (see my other "Log on locally" thread) but I don't know if there is any connection.  In other words, my SCOM deployment may need to be done over.  (Although it is unclear to me just what tables
and other information would need to be removed from the SQL database.)
    - Mark

    Hi,
For the issue that Windows operating system not monitored, the cause may be not importing the Windows Server based OS management pack:
System Center Management Pack for Windows Server Operating System
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=9296
Windows Server base OS monitoring is not a part of the default management packs shipped with SCOM, we have to download and import it.
In addition that, this issue can occur because the new agent has the same NetBIOS name as a previously installed agent. When the agent is deleted from Operations Manager, the grooming of the deleted agent is hard coded to occur after two days. Therefore,
the agent is not immediately groomed out of the database completely.
To work around this issue after the old agent is deleted from the console, wait three days, and then add the new agent to Operations Manager. Alternatively, make sure that two full days have passed and then add the new agent to Operations Manager.

  • Windows Operating System "Not Monitored"

Hi, I have seen multiple posts regarding this, and I have tried many things without luck. I thought I'd contribute what helped me. Funnily, I actually fixed the problem while posting my question. But I thought this may be useful to anyone else with the same
    issue.
    We have SCOM 2012 7.0.8560.0
We have the Windows Server Operating System MP installed, 6.0.7061.0
3 servers are reporting that the Windows Operating System is "Not Monitored".
The 3 servers which are not being monitored all appear to be Windows Server 2012 R2 operating system.
    What we've tried
Uninstall SCOM agent from the SCOM console. Remove SCOM agent folder. Reboot. Reinstall SCOM Agent from SCOM Console (push install). install completes successfully.
    Enable Proxy Discovery
    Reboot SCOM Servers
Ensured the SCOM service account has Admin rights on the server
    Disabled Windows Firewall
Set User Account Control to minimum
Verified DNS (DNS functions 100% in our environment, with scavenging every 7 days)
SCOM Database Grooming runs every 7 days
The problem has existed for weeks\months, so this is not a DNS or Database grooming issue (unless there is something lingering in the database?)
Re-Ran the "download SCOM Management Packs" from the console - all MP's are up to date
After reading through the release notes of the Windows Server Management Pack, I searched my discovery rules to perhaps see if we had disabled the Server 2012 discoveries, or something careless like that. To my amazement,
there we NO Windows Server 2012 R2 Discoveries present in our environment! This confused me greatly, since we are running the latest version of the Windows Server management pack.
For some reason, it appears that updating your MP's from the console wizard does not pull this down.
    After manually downloading
the Windows Server Operating System management pack, and installing it manually, everything started to work.
I'm not sure why the SCOM wizard doesn't do this, but this has kept me busy for days, for something so easily missed.
I suggest MS enhances the SCOM "update MP" downloads to pull down an entire management pack if it says it was "imported successfully". I now wonder what else I think it "up to date", which may have rules missing without
    my knowledge.
    Cheers

    Hi,
It is really nice of you to share this, this will help others who encounter the same issue.
And as far as I know, we need to manually download the Windows opearting system management pack to management group, then we can monitor windows operating system:

  • Has anyone tried other open Operating Systems?

Such as BSD and OpenSolaris? I was wondering how other open OS compare to Linux.

Sadly, I tend to agree with dakor. If you want a reasonable modern desktop, you really want Linux or Windows. The most friendly useable BSD is PC-BSD in my experience which is based upon FreeBSD. FreeBSD in itself is fast and compact but is weighed down by menacing package systems and lack of hardware support. It also can't run VMWare which is a large downer as a server operating system for many. There are alternatives for virtualisation of course, but not so much in the business sector. However, I heartily recommend FreeBSD as a file server if you need one (assuming your RAID cards support it). OpenSolaris, if/when you can get it to install, seems fairly reasonable to begin with, but is decidedly not lightweight, and I found it somewhat sluggish. It feels like glueing a desktop UI onto what is traditionally a server operating sytem. I'm not really sure what it's trying to be anymore. I also question its future somewhat. It's a curiosity for me, but nothing more.
ReactOS is very impressive given what it sets out to do, and actually what it can achieve. Sure, it's trying to be Windows, but even if you don't like Windows, you have to admire the feats they have accomplished to even get this far. At the very least, worth trying in a VM just to see what it can do.
Last I tried Syllable it would not boot at all. This was a couple years ago though.

  • Windows Operating System not being monitored

I have installed some of the management packs (advanced workflow module events, event log provider events, performance monitor porvider events, registry provider events, script and powershell provider events, service monitoring events, vmi provider events) and
there are no overrides.  I still cannot get the windows operating system to get monitored.  I have restarted the server and still none of the windows operating systems are being monitored.  Is there a certian management pack that i need to install
for the monitoring Windows Operating Systems.

dktoa is correct, just because you have the Agents installed does not mean that anything is actually being monitored. In fact, all that will be monitored is the Agent itself being able to communicate with the Management Server.
However, I would suggest to ensure that all of your Agents are reporting back as Healthy (aka green), before you import any Management Packs. That way any issues that may occur can be directly linked (and thus troubleshooted) to the MP.
Additionally, you have not mentioned what Windows OS you are trying to monitor. More than likely it is a Server OS; in which DKTOA has provided the link for the Windows Server Operating System Management Pack.
However, if in case it is a client-based Windows OS (i.e. XP, Vista, 7) than that Management Pack can be found here: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=15700.
You should note, that there currently is no Management Pack for Windows 8; though it is due out soon.

  • TS140 EasyStartup 3.8.1f - Win 2012 R2 "No Operating System Found"

Hi, I have a strange problem that I hope someone can help me with. I am very sorry for that the problem description is in caps.
I INSTALLED WINDOWS SERVER 2012 R2 DATAACENTER WITH EASYSTARTUP V3.8.1F IN UEFI MODE, I USE RAID. ON REBOOT I GET ERROR CODE 1962. CTRL+ALT+DELETE DOES NOT FIX IT, ONLY A FRESH START WITH THE HARDWARE BUTTON WORKS.

I am having this same problem with my system.
Maybe things have changed since I worked on servers but it used to be you used the start up disk to set up the OS install answer file and included the driver\utility run the RAID set upprior to OS installation.  The EasyStartup disk that came with the server (v3.8.1f) says so on the label:
"RAID con?guration tool and automated installation tool for server operating systems"
    - that is not a typo, it has a "?" in the word on the label.
So, I loaded the disk and instead of making the RAID configuration utility available as an option to run during the process, it simply says to Click Exit and configure the RAID before installing the OS.  Thanks Mr. EASYStartup!  How ever could I do this without you?
The utility I need to run/use is called the "Intel Rapid Storage Technology enterprise option ROM configuration utility" but the EasyStartup disk does not have it.  It is also not in all those downloads on the website that I can tell with those cryptic names.  Would anyone like a "ul_lsi_storcli_1.09.14_anyos" download?  I think it is originally from the beautiful Greek islands.
I am downloading the latest EasyStartup disk iso (v3.8.1g) and giving that one a shot.  If that fails, I am making a bootable USB key and loading all the TS140 downloads available and clicking on everything not labeled BIOS until it breaks or loads what I want.
I did call the number posted here on the off chance I could get lucky and get someone smart to help me out.  No such luck.  The correct SERVER support number is (800) 426-7378.  Have your Model and S/N ready.
I got hung up on once.  Then, I called back one more time and was transferred to the server tech support line where I finally got someone ... unsmart.  They were trying to be helpful but clearly were guessing (with their eyes closed) as to what I was trying to accomplish and what solution would work.
I was told to update the BIOS to the latest version because maybe the older version of BIOS did not have the instruction to prompt me with the "Control-I I" am supposed to see (according to the ThinkServer TS140 User Guide pg 32) when trying to configure the onboard RAID prior to OS installation.  Yeah, so glad I called ....
After 5 minutes diagnosing, they said "try this and if it doesn't work, call us back and we'll send someone out with a replacement motherboard".  Really? Already??
My first trip to Lenovo Server land and so far, the product is impressive (it is so quiet I swore it was off the first time I powered it on) but the support is not.  Dammit Jim, I need a utility, not a motherboard ....
(I think my EasyStartup iso finished downloading while I wrote this post. Finally)

  • [823] [HY000] [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]The operating system returned error 1450(Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service.) to SQL Server.

    Hi,
I am facing an issue while loading fresh data into SQL server database.
we are able to load data into staging area, but while processing stored procedures system face bellow error message :
[823] [HY000] [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]The operating system returned error 1450(Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service.) to SQL Server during a write at offset 0x00000243bd0000 in file 'E:\SQLDB\DBName.mdf'.
Additional messages in the SQL Server error log and system event log may provide more detail. This is a severe system-level error condition that threatens database integrity and must be corrected immediately. Complete a full database consistency check (DBCC
CHECKDB). This error can be caused by many factors; for more information, see SQL Server Books Online.
we use windows 2008 R2 with SQL server managment studio 2008.
    Appreciate your suggestion.
    Thanks in advance.
    Best Regards,
    Manorath
    Manorath

    Hi Manorath,
Based on my research, this issue can be occurred in the following scenarios:
You are running a DBCC command on a large database. For example, you are running the DBCC CHECKDB statement on the database. At the same time, you run many DML statements on the database.
You create a database snapshot for a large database. At the same time, you are running many DML statements on the database.
In these scenarios, the SQL Server service stops responding. The DBCC CHECK statement is never completed, and you receive the error message repeatedly.
This issue occurs because the sparse file for a database snapshot file has exceeded the file size limitation in NTFS file system. When the operating system error 1450 occurs, SQL Server enters an infinite retry loop.
To fix this issue, please download and install Cumulative update package 1 for SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1. Besides, because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous
SQL Server 2008 fix release. We recommend that you consider applying the most recent fix release that contains this hotfix.
