Issue installing 1.4.2_08 on XP (error 1722 problem with Windows Installer)

First time poster guys, so be gentle.
I have installed this older package on 20+ PCs, but this one is kicking my arse. It makes it through the install and then at the very end puts up:
Error 1722. There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact your support personnel or package vendor.
I have tried a TON of stuff including uninstalling, re-installing, editing the deployment.properties file, copying that file from a working PC, installing other versions (1.3.X and the latest one that downloads from the frontpage seem to work, but when I go to java.com and test to see if I have java installed, it just closes the browser). I ran it with logging turned on and got the following info.
+=== Logging started: 10/10/2007 13:10:15 ===+
Error 1722.There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. +=== Logging stopped: 10/10/2007 13:10:51 ===+
The java_install.log says everything extracted and unpacked fine. The jupdate log says that everything worked and ends with:
INFO: Java(TM) Update (1.4.2_08-b03) has been installed successfully on this machine.
But yet I still get an error during the install of 1.4.2_08 and even if a different version LOOKS like it works, it still isn't really working because the java icon in control panel never works and if I go to java.com and test to see if I have java installed it closes the browser. I have also signed in as admin and updated to IE 7.0, so I don't think a permission or browser issue is the culprit. 3 hours of my life gone. Anyone got any ideas?

First you down load the windows inataller from the follwoing url
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=cebbacd8-c094-4255-b702-de3bb768148f&displaylang=en
then you down load the offline installation package of j2sdk1.4 and install it

  • Can't install Quick Time 7 - Error 1721 problems with windows installer

I had QT 6 PRO and an old version of itunes working fine. I tried to upgrade to Itunes 6. The install failed at the last step of installing QuickTime 7.04.
The error message was "Error 1721.There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor." So, no QT, therefore no Itunes.
    I did the following:
    cleared my temp directory.
made sure I had the latest windows installer (3.1 v2)
removed all traces of itunes and quick time, using Remove Programs, the windows cleanup Utility and manually deleting all files as listed in info article 93976.
I downloaded the standalone QuckTime 7.04 installer, tired to install and I still get the same error.
I now have no quick time 6 or 7 and no itunes, and I have no idea what is wrong with the installer.
I do have access to the install log, and am delighted to reprint it if it will help.
thanks for any help people can provide.

  • Unable to install iTunes 10.5 on Win 7 laptop - "Problem with Windows Installer program"

I get the following when trying to install version 10.5
I have uninstalled everything Apple, emptied temp files, restarted the computer and I'm still unable to install the lasted iTunes.
    Any thoughts?

    1. Go to softpedia.com
    2. In the search box in softpedia.com web site type in 'Windows Installer Cleanup Utility'. Click on GO
3  On the next page, at the bottom you will see in blue 'Windows Installer CleanUp Utility 2.5.0.1 by Microsoft'
4 Click on that link and it will take you to another page. On the left side you will see a 'download' button in blue colour. Click on that button and it will take you to the next page.
5 Click on link that reads: 'Softpedia Mirror (US) exe', A download window will appear. Click on 'save file'.
6 Install 'Windows Installer ClenaUp Utility' program.
7 After installing program, open up the program and scroll down the list till you find 'Apple Software Update'
8 Highlight it and click remove.
9 Now you can install itunes 10.5
This is exactly what I did and it worked for me like a charm. I even updated my iphone with IOS 5 tonight.
There is another way which I learned later which is easier and faster. I am running Windows 7. Go to 'Control Panel'. Scroll down to 'Programs and Features' and click on it. Scroll down till you see 'Apple Software Update' and right click on it and click 'uninstall' and then install itunes 10.5. That should work also. I've heard that some people can't see it in control panel so the other way would be to do as I did and download the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility. I hope I've made this as simple as possible for you. Good luck.

  • Tried to install iTunes 10.5 this morning but an error appeared saying "problem with windows installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run." Can someone please help

I tried to install iTunes 10.5 this morning but an error appeared saying "problem with windows installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run." Can someone please help

Firstly, are you installing iTunes for the first time or are you updating your current version of iTunes?
If you're installing iTunes for the first time have you tried redownloading the installer package? Perhaps the file you downloaded originally is corrupted...
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/
If you've tried that, then try installing iTunes as your computer's administrator. To do this right-click the install package and choose "Run as administrator".
If you're updating iTunes to the most recent version try repairing the Apple Software Update program on your computer. It's under the add/remove programs.
    1. Open the control panel
    2. Open Add/Remove programs (called "Programs and Features" in Windows 7)
    3. Navigate to "Apple Software Update" in the list and click on it
    4. Click on "Change" then select "Repair" (or just select the repair option in Windows 7)
Once you repair this, try running iTunes and the update again.
    Fingers crossed!

I pulled my brains out trying to figure this bug out and I may have a solution for you.
All of it installed fine in my desktop, but a friend's laptop got the error you mentioned on quicktime, itunes, flash, officeXP and about anything else I tried to load for him.
If you look in: C:\documents and settings\<username>\Local Settings\Temp there will be an iTunes install log...open it in Notepad and see if it isn't exiting with a 1619 error while running msiexec.exe
If this is the case, this fix should work for you.
Seems some configurations of XP (and possibly Vista) aren't allowing full administrator rights to the account you set up when you installed XP (even though User Editor says you do have those rights.)
I read 2 MS articles and turned off simple file sharing, then gave ownership of the entire C: drive to the administrator. Logged the admin account off, logged his "admin" account in, and then gave rights to his personal directory to his account (c:\docs and settings\<username>)
Once I did that, every install that had previously errored out performed flawlessly.
    The MS articles in question:
    http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=316309 (1619 error)
    and
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=308419 (how to set special permissions)
    Hope this helps!

  • Trying to install the latest version of iTunes and when it is being installed I get the message "There is a problem with this installer package. A program quired for this install could not be run. Contact your support personel or package vendor."

I am trying to install the latest version of itunes and when the install begins I get the message "There is a problem with this Windows installer package. A program required for this install could not be opened. contact your support personnel or product vendor". I ran a troubleshooting diagnostic on my computer and nothing flagged as a problem. I uninstalled iTunes and tried again and now I don't have any way to sync my ipod touch. Please help with any suggestions!!!

Just in case, let's try a standalone AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi install.
Download and save a copy of the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe) installer file to your hard drive:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Download and install the free trial version of WinRAR:
    http://www.rarlab.com/
Right-click the iTunesSetup.exe, and select "Extract to iTunesSetup". WinRAR will expand the contents of the file into a folder called "iTunesSetup".
Go into the folder and doubleclick the AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi to do a standalone ASU install.
(If it offers you the choice to remove or repair, choose "Remove", and if the uninstall goes through successfully, see if you can reinstall by doubleclicking the AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi again.)
Does it install (or uninstall and then reinstall) properly for you? If not, what error message do you get? (Precise text, please.)

  • Can't install Safari 4...problem with windows installer?

I recently tried updating my Safari browser to v4 but I keep getting the "There is a problem with this windows installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor".
I came across this thread that offers a solution (http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=9580878#9580878 ), however, I don't know how to edit the registry keys by deleting all "applesoftwareupdate" associated keys as the solution suggests. I wouldn't like to mess up my PC by deleting the wrong keys!
Any help in the stepwise process of deleting these keys?

    Have you tried this?
Start => Control Panel => Add or Remove Programs => Apple Software Update => Change => Repair

  • Error Message: Problem w/ Windows Installer

Trying to update to the new iTunes on XP, I recieve the following error:
"There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact your support personnel or package vendor."
I tried everything, followed all the steps on iTunes support. Uninstalled everything and this still happens. Now I dont even have itunes at all cuz i cant reinstall. Any suggestions??

You have to update your apple software. Search for apple software update or find it in your programs and click it. It should then search for updates. Once you download them you should be able to download itunes

  • ITunes x64 does not install in Windows 7. Shows that there is problem with windows installer package

These images below show the error message I retrieve. I downloaded iTunes 10.5 x64 Edition for windows from Apple Official Website. When I try to install, it shows me these errors. I even tried removing the old version iTunes, and installing this version. But still the same error occurs. Even used windows cleanup utility to remove all itunes and quicktime related files. Still the same problem occurs. I also noticed a difference in this installation compared to the previous ones. In the previous version installation a segment of Apple Terms & Conditions Agreement will appear. But in this installer package, as you can see in the images provided it does not appear. How to solve this? I've been trying to install this for nearly a month.

Nowadays people don't back up to CD/DVD. They get an *external hard drive* and copy over their entire iTunes folder, and whatever else they are backing up.
The advantages are (1) this method does not depend on iTunes's horribly unreliable burning capability (2) you can look at the external and see that the stuff you backed up is really there. (If you want to see an unhappy person, it is when they try to restore from CD/DVD and discover that it did not burn correctly in the first place.) (3) it lets you back up your other valuable files besides your music.

    Any help would be appreciated.

I had the same problem in my environment.
Here are the steps how i did solve this issue
Since VMM 2012 R2 Requires ADK 8.1 and this requires SQL 2012 Express.
In order SQL Server 2012 to be installed successfully .Net Frame Work 3.5 feature on Windows Server has to be enabled first, in this case it is not not being installed by ADK Installation wizard as a result SQL service fails to start, which results on VMM
    installation to fail.
Please try to enable .Net Frame Work 3.5 feature on Windows Server 2012 R2 before you install ADK 8.1

    Hi Abdallah,
According to your description, could you please post the summary and detail logs for further analysis? By default, the logs can be found in: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Setup Bootstrap\Log.
Usually, the error occurs when the Windows Installer Service is not running or the Windows Installer registry settings are corrupted.  I recommend you reset the Windows Installer Service settings in the registry and restart the Windows Installer Service,
then reinstall SQL Server 2008 R2. For more details, please review this similar
    article.
    Thanks,
    Lydia Zhang
