ITunes 10.5.2 is writing a lot of temp.tmp files and using up many gigabytes of disk space! It seems as if it is completely out of control!

iTunes 10.5.2 on my macbook pro is writing a lot of temp(number).tmp files to my iTunes folder and not erasing them later!  As a result it quickly uses up many gigabytes of hard disk space. It uses up 8 to 10 gigabytes in just a few days.  I have been using iTunes since its inception, and only had this occur in the past few weeks.  My iTunes library is large with 3187 albums, and is 425 GB in size. My iTunes library is located on remote hard disk and accessed from my wifi network.  I have had such a setup for many years without any problems. Any help would be appreciated.

Usually, that indicates that something is interfering with read/writes to the iTunes library files. Do you have security software (or realtime backup utilities) installed that might be scanning the locations on the computer where the iTunes library files are stored?

Your purchased music is availble for download again at no cost.  If you have iTunes match service, you can download your matched music.

Have you confirmed that you successfull purged iTunes Match by also looking on an iOS device?  If so, keep in mind that Apple's servers may be experiencing a heavy load right now.  They just added about 19 countries to the service and I've read a few accounts this morning that suggests all's not running perfectly right now.

  • Best way to stream lots of data to file and post process it

    Hello,
I am trying to do something that seems like it should be quite simple but am having some difficulty figuring out how to do it.  I am running a test that has over 100 channels of mixed sensor data.  The test will run for several days or longer at a time and I need to log/stream data at about 4Hz while the test is running.  The data I need to log is a mixture of different data types that include a time stamp, several integer values (both 32 and 64 bit), and a lot of floating point values.  I would like to write the data to file in a very compressed format because the test is scheduled to run for over a year (stopping every few days) and the data files can get quite large.  I currently have a solution that simply bundles all the date into a cluster then writes/streams the cluster to a binary file as the test runs.  This approach works fine but involves some post processing to convert the data into a format, typically a text file, that can be worked with in programs like Excel or DIAdem.   After the files are converted into a text file they are, no surprise, a lot larger than (about 3 times) the original binary file size.
I am considering several options to improve my current process.  The first option is writing the data directly to a tdms file which would allow me to quicly import the data into DIAdem (or Excel with a plugin) for processing/visualization.   The challenge I am having (note, this is my first experience working with tdms files and I have a lot to learn) is that I can not find a simple way to write/stream all the different data types into one tdms file and keep each scan of data (containing different data types) tied to one time stamp.  Each time I write data to file, I would like the write to contain a time stamp in column 1, integer values in columns 2 through 5, and floating point values in the remaining columns (about 90 of them).  Yes, I know there are no columns in binary files but this is how I would like the data to appear when I import it into DIAdem or Excel.
The other option I am considering is just writing a custom data plugin for DIAdem that would allow me to import the binary files that I am currently creating directly into DIAdem.  If someone could provide me with some suggestions as to what option would be the best I would appreciate it.  Or, if there is a better option that I have not mentioned feel free to recommend it.  Thanks in advance for your help.

    Hello,
Here is a simple example, of course here I only create one value per iteration in the while loop for simplicity. You can also set properties of the file which can be useful, and set up different channels.
Beside, you can use multiple groups to have more flexibility in data storage. You can think of channels like columns, and groups as sheets in Excel, so you see this way your data when you import the tdms file into Excel.
I hope it helps, of course there are much more advanced features with TDMS files, read the help docs!

  • When I open iTunes on my new computer using the .itl file, and using the same external drive holding the songs, all of the songs I added to iTunes up to a certain date have broken links, while none of the songs have broken links on the old computer.

I want to open the  iTunes library on my new laptop with all the playlists and stuff I built on the old computer. I have all my music on an external drive. I have copied the .itl file from the old computer and opened it on the laptop, and it has all the playlists, but all of the songs that were added to iTunes up to a certain date have broken links. What am I doing wrong?

Moving library files around while leaving the data in the same place usually presents no problems. Moving the data around independently from the library usually breaks things. With Windows machines all you should need to do is make sure that the same drive letter is being used on the new system as with the old. If that is not possible you need to get your library into a portable layout before moving it between systems.
    Typical layout of iTunes folders:
When the media folder is inside the main iTunes folder as shown above then the library is portable. Typically with a split library the iTunes Music or iTunes Media folder (everything inside the red outline) is moved to a different drive by choosing a new locaton for it and then consolidating.
To make the library portable again you need to copy the library files and album artwork folder into the parent folder of the media folder so that the nested relationship is recreated. (BTW If your media isn't already inside your designated media folder then you will also need to consolidate the files that are outside of it, before you copy the library files.) You can then use the hold-down-shift-when-starting-iTunes method to open the library file in that parent folder. Once the library has been opened, tested and closed you are most of the way there.
The iTunes window inherits its title from the folder holding the library files so, unless you created a folder called iTunes to hold the media folder, iTunes may now have an unexpected title when you run it. The parent folder can be renamed as iTunes, and the library opened again. Alternatively, if the parent folder is at the root of the drive, or has other data which you wish to leave in place, you can create a new top level folder called iTunes and move the library files, album artwork and media folders into it before opening and testing the library again.
If the library doesn't work after any step simply reverse it by undoing a move or rename or opening the previous set iTunes Library.itl file.
If all has gone well then the library is now portable. Once you've migrated the data to a new system you can copy the library files back to their usual internal location if you find that having them on the external drive affects performance...

  • Movies on itunes are using up all of my disk space

I have a macbook pro ... we have lots of movies saved on itunes, some downloaded from itunes and then i saved them to the computer.
The movies that are saved in the itunes folder are taking up a lot of space.
Can I change the movie file location to an external hard drive and leave the music in the itunes file?

Yes, this is actually quite easy to do.
    1. Copy the video files to the external drive
    2. Delete the video files in iTunes, and select "Move to Trash"
    3. Emty your Trash
    4. In the iTunes prefs under Advanced, uncheck "Copy files to iTunes Media Folder when adding to library"
    5. Add the video files back into iTunes
    6. Recheck the "Copy files to iTunes Media Folder when adding to library" in the prefs
Doing it this way will allow you to sync video files to any IOS device whenever the external is plugged in since  iTunes will still have access to your music, and whenever you plug in your external drive, it will also have access to your video files.

  • HT4527 if i want to keep my iTunes on a external hard on step 4 I would just reset and use the map to the hard drive?  also will this keep all info of the files?  I do not want to loss all the play counts and tags

I'm upgrading to a new macbook pro mid 2012 with a Solid state drive from a macbook due 2 white that I have a 750 gb HD.  My itunes is 95% of that Hard drive I just want to make sure I do not loss any of my itunes info in the move to the hard drive.

So, everything worked out just fine!
I have all my material in the ProRes Codec on a seperate drive now. The project itself was kept or rather duplicated, the bin structure etc stayed the same but is linking to the newly created files. The playback and workflow is fluent. I am happy!
Time info: For about 120 GB of material the codec change process took 25 hours.
    Thanks for your help!

The file name must contain a suffix containing the date in yyyymmdd format. In cases where the file stored more than once per day, a sequence number must also be provided within the filename.
    (i.e. v1_yyyymmdd, v2_yyyymmdd, v3_yyyymmdd, v4_yyyymmdd, v5_yyyymmdd…)

could you please any body help me out from this....

I assume you are using Windows. Try to write a batch file so that that would look for the ibot name when ever its finds rename the file name as required.
    This would be easiest way..

  • Cant add files and use itunes at the same time?

I am totally confused as to why Itunes is Frozen when im adding files. I usually manually add my music to itunes myself. I figured why not take advantage and just have it do it for me. Now i cant play or pause the music as its doing this. The main problem is that the folder of music that i added, has all my itunes files on that drive in that folder. Is it going to add everything i have twice now? its telling me new versions of apps are available. I have 600+ apps. Im starting to realise that there is no work around for this. perhaps this belongs in a suggestion thread. sorry for ranting. delete this post its looking like i have to force itunes closed and ruin everything that i have organised so i dont have to tell itunes 600 times that i dont want to find the new version of an app. I've already been fooled into recrediting all my downloads because Everyone wanted to play stupid on the phone. GOD HELP ME!

Say i finish clicing x 600 times. Is there a way to stop the music after it resumes searching my 111 gb of music. i dont want to play the same cd the whole time.

  • Itunes updated files and now I'm locked out - help

So I just plugged my Ipod classic into the PC to charge it and Itunes opens up and says 'updating files'.
The old files (over 20gb of music and movies) are still on it, but it looks in the usage bar to have compartmentalized them off.
It then copied the whole lot over again... so now all the same files are on it twice.
And when I turn it on it has no files. No music, movies or the games i've downloaded. Nothing.
2 days ago I logged into my apple account on Itunes and downloaded a game for the Ipod. It didn't try to update it then, and didn't earlier today when I plugged it in. But this time it did what I mentioned above.
So now I can't access any of my music or movies on it. Help.
Will I have to restore it and start again?
EDIT: I've just plugged it in again, and it has added the 2nd lot to the compartmentalized files and tried to copy it all over again. So I forced it to stop syncing and ejected it.

    Nevermind.
I called the number on my warranty we ended up having to restore it and start over.
Still don't know what caused the issue in the first place, so ill leave this marked as unanswered for now.
If anyone knows why it would do it please let me know

  • Download has left me with missing files and cannot start iTunes

I was prompted to upgrade iTunes and so I did.  The upgrade started when Genuis was still doing it's thing.  At the end of the download, I was prompted to restart.  I closed what I was working on and restarted. Now, I when I try to start iTunes, I get an error message that says there are missing files and that I should re-install iTunes.   If I uninstall, will I lose the music files?  I tried to re-download, but this did not fix anything.  Any advice?

Now, I when I try to start iTunes, I get an error message that says there are missing files and that I should re-install iTunes.
With that one in that context, I think we should check for malware.
Try downloading and installing the free version of Malwarebytes AntiMalware. Update your MBAM definitions and then run a full scan of the PC. (Takes about 2 hour on my Lenovo.)
    http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php
Does the scan find any infections? If so, please paste the contents of the log file for the scan in a reply here so we can have a look.

  • Meta data - what is stored in the file and what is JUST referenced in Itunes

wondering if anyone knows why some data is ONLY store in itunes but not pernament added to the 'get info' for the file.
    example beats per minute .
I would think that ALL info added to a file in itunes would be stored in the 'get info' section of the actual file.
is there a doc that details what is store and what is not.
    thanks

    Fritz,
BPM is definitely stored in the MP3 file, and will be there if you copy the file and use it somewhere else.
Like Limnos, I have not see a nice summary, but here are the basics:
Identifying information about the song, such as Artist, Title, Year, etc are stored as tags in the file for most audio types.  The exception is WAV files, which have limited tag capability.
Library-specific information, such as Date Added, Last Played, Play Count, etc, are stored in the library, not in the file.
And then there are some complicated things:
iTunes puts the Rating in the library, even though the tag is capable of storing it (and other players, such as WMP, use the rating tag).
Artwork is in the song file if it was added by pasting in using Get Info, but is in the Artwork folders if it was added using the Get Album Artwork command.

If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 6.0.1. For the iPad Mini the iOS is 6.0.2. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.
Tip - If connected to your computer, you may need to disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily.  Then download and install the iOS update. Be sure and backup your iPad before the iOS update. After you update an iPad (except iPad 1) to iOS 6.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).
