ITunes opens when iPod connected

Why does iTunes open if my iPod is connected? I've unchecked this preference for this iPod in iTunes.
If I quit iTunes and the iPod is still connected, it mounts on the desktop and iTunes opens and updates the iPod again. Very annoying!
Thanks for the help.

Just to update my question: iTunes opens after I quit it even if my iPod is not connected.
So I guess my topic doesn't belong in this forum. It seems the problem is with iTunes. Or something I installed. LastFM plug-in?

  • IPod Syncing Automatically/iTunes Opening when iPod Connects

    Good morning:
I am at my wits end, so maybe some of the experts here can solve my problem.
My touch is automatically launching iTunes, even though I do not have the launch iTunes box checked on my iPod.
This is where it gets interesting. I just plug it in to charge, it automatically launches iTunes, and then iTunes automatically syncs the iPod.
Of course, I also have "Prevent iPods, iPhones and iPads from syncing automatically" checked in Preferences. iTunes seems to ignore this, and syncs anyway.
The fun part begins right when it begins to sync. Since I like to have a firewall and antivirus software running (which is apparently not compatible with good syncing), my iPod promptly fails to sync, and then iTunes tells me it cannot recognize the device.
So, I then have to disable my firewall and antivirus, restore, run the backup and then manually manage all my music again, plus anything I downloaded before running the next backup because (get this) the second I plug in the iPod, iTunes loads and attempts to sync, which, of course, fails, and so I never get the next backup in.
And I know what you are thinking, just disable the firewall and antivirus before plugging in the iPod. Yea, sometimes I do that and sometimes I forget. Ever forget to do something? Happens to me with frequency.
I have tried un-checking the Prevent box, closing iTunes, opening iTunes, re-checking the Prevent box. Doesn't work; iTunes still automatically opens and then automatically syncs.
iTunes, on occasion, will sync when I close iTunes before ejecting the iPod. Which is always fun if I've gone ahead and re-activated my firewall and antivirus, because I get to start all over again. I'm becoming quite the restore professional.
    Why? Any solutions?
My iTunes version is 10.0.1.22, iPod is a 3rd Gen Touch with the current OS version (constantly restoring does that), I'm running Vista, I'm currently standing and my sign is Aries. I'm not sure which of those will be helpful, but I'm trying to cover all the bases.
    Thanks in advance.

    Welcome to the discussions,
try this to stop autolaunch: connect your ipod, uncheck the autosync option in iTunes/Settings/Devices,
then check the summary pane if the autolauch option is selected. In your case you should now see the selection mark, this one is not visible if you selected to prevent any device from syncing in the settings.
Deselect the autolaunch option in the summary pane and change the settings for autosync again in iTunes/Settings/Devices. Now you should be able to connect without any sync process starting.
To prevent automatic syncing one time, without changing settings: Open iTunes, connect iPod touch to your computer, then press and hold Command-Option (on a Mac) or Shift-Control (on a PC) until you see iPod touch appear in the sidebar.

  • Having itunes open when ipod is connected

Nano 4th generation--iTunes always opened when iPod was connected to computer; now it doesn't and going to Devices and scrolling down Summary to "open when ipod is connected" is greyed out and will not allow me to check it.  Even going to the iTunes preferences does not offer this selection.

You meant that you can't place a check mark in the check box "Open iTunes when device connected" ?
Just do a little test: Click on Music and see if you can put there a check mark.

  • ITunes does not open when ipod connected

Since installing the 1.1 update, iTunes does not open when I connect my nano to the computer. Both computer and iTunes (when I manually open it) recognize the nano, so no big deal. Just wondering how to make iTunes automatically open.

Sometimes the Preferences get corrupt - if you set them off and then back on that sometimes clears the problem.

  • Itunes doesn't open when ipod connects to pc

Itunes won't open automatically when I connect to my pc. I have to to click on the itunes icon. I have the box checked marked to open automatically under options.

    gta129,
Do you have iTunesHelper set to start up when you login? To check if it's in the list of login items:
    1. Open System Preferences.
    2. Click the Accounts pane.
    3. Select your user.
    4. Click the Login Items tab.
    5. See if iTunes Helper is listed here.
    Hope this helps,
    Jennifer B.

  • ITunes freezes when iPod connected

I have Windows XP and iTunes version 11.0.1. Since I've updated iTunes I haven't tried to sync my iPod touch 4th generation. When I connected my iPod my iTunes freezes and I can't click on anything. Once I disconnect the iPod then iTunes works fine. What should I do? Thanks.

I've had similiar problems when it comes to freezing. What I did was simply wait. I loaded my iPod and the mouse pointer showed the hourglass for a few minutes, then the iPod simply showed up on iTunes. Try rebooting your system, connecting iPod, and giving it a few minutes.

  • Lock icon at bottom of iTunes screen when iPod connected and selected -grey

I'm a longtime Mac and iPod man trying to get ipod working for friend who has Dell laptop and XP.
Have downloaded and installed latest Windows software for both iPod and laptop.
    Problem
iPod is recognised, but I can do very little with it in iTunes. Items get greyed out, iPod screen often returns to internal menus (that is appears as if iPod is disconnected) and strangest of all (for me ) is that a lock icon appears at bottom of iTunes screen in line where iPod capacity is shown. Have reset iPod, restarted computer, iTunes etc. no change.
Here's the thing - same problem when connected to my iMac G5!
    Any suggestions welcome.

Got my answer from nice chap with a Windows machine!
It was because iPod was in autosync mode which I have never used myself since I have way too much stuff in iTunes.

  • Itunes Closes when Ipod Connected

Itunes is working fine when my ipod is not attached, but as soon as i attach my ipod, I get a "Itunes has encountered a problem and needs to close" (send error report). The same thing happens with the Ipod Updater software.
I've tried unistalling and reinstalling Itunes several times already.
I tried using the original version of Itunes i had from an install CD (4.??) and get an error message saying that the nessesary software for Itunes to communicate with Ipod is not installed properly. Please Reinstall Itunes.
Thanks for your help. I've been working on this for a good 3 hours and just can't figure it out.

automatically. is there a way to turn off automatic updates without the ipod actually attached? that would be great if this was that simple...
sort of. the technique will do double duty for us ... we'll also use it to check to see if the problem is associated with a specific XP user account, or if it's systemwide.
    here's the technique.
quit itunes. head into your user accounts control panel and create a new user account with full administrative rights. (there's help documentation on how to do that at the left of the control panel screen.) while you're in that control panel, switch off "fast user switching" in your logging-on preferences.
now log out of the old account and log into the new account.
launch itunes. eventually, you'll see a blank library screen. (that's normal.)
plug in the ipod. do not associate it with the blank library.
if itunes is still up and running at this stage, set the ipod to manually manage music:
    Managing content manually on iPod
now eject her, close itunes, log out, log back in to your normal account and launch itunes again.
does she still crash itunes when plugged in while set to manually manage music?

  • ITunes crashes when iPod connected

After four years I finally have my first error message of any kind with my Mac.  The other day I plugged in my iPod touch after iTunes was already open and an error message popped up saying iTunes would be forced to close.  I can use iTunes w/out any issue but as soon as I plug in my iPod, it crashes every time.  Anyone have any fixes?

OK I FIXED IT!! my ipod is all set to manual except for the games. Both my games became unplayable the other day for some reason (texas holdem and tetris). i went into my ipod through my computer and went into the ipod_control folder. i deleted the games. now it works fine.

  • How to "Open iTunes automatically when iPod is connected"....

...without having them sync automatically?  I'm able to do this on my MBP just fine.  The solution on my MBP is to uncheck "prevent ipods, ipads, iphones from syncing automatically" under Devices Preferences.  Then I'm able to check "Open iTunes when Ipod is connected" under my iPod's Summary Options.  After that i can then go back a uncheck "prevents Ip.... from syncing automatically".
Unfortunately, this option doesn't seem to be available to Windows users.  or is it?
    Thanks,
    Mike

this will solve half of my issue while coincidentally causing the other half of it.
I want to be able to:
Open iTunes automatically when iPod is connected
    AND
Prevent my ipod from syncing automatically *(when this is enabled the prior feature becomes disabled)

  • After iOS 4 update on iPod Touch, iTunes crashes when iPod is connected.

I just updated my iPod from 3.1.3 to iOS 4, and after all of that, when I plug in my iPod Touch 2G [version 4.0 (8A293)] to my laptop, iTunes crashes. A window pops up saying "iTunes has stopped working," and then iTunes closes automatically. When I do not already have iTunes open and I connect my iPod, iTunes will open and then close a few seconds later with the same pop up box.
I tried seeing if it was a syncing or connecting issue, so I turned off automatic syncing and the problem still exists. Therefore, I think it is a connection issue.
*Note: When I was updating to iOS 4, I left and came back to my computer with it running on idle. Could that have had an effect? If so, how can I just redo everything?
**Another note that may be helpful is that while I do still have all of my music and videos in iTunes (which works totally fine with no iPod attached), the videos and music is NOT on my iPod. But, my apps all work fine on my iPod.
I would really appreciate any sort of help I could get for this problem. I was really looking forward to the OS update, but now I am disappointed because of this major problem.
    THANK YOU for your help!

I would try moving the existing iPod backup file to a safe locations and let iTunes make a whole new one.  The location of of the backup file is:
iTunes places the backup files in the following places:
    Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
    Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
    Windows Vista and Windows 7: \Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
Note: If you do not see the AppData or Application Data folders, you may need to show hidden files (Windows XP,  Windows Vista and Windows 7), or iTunes may not be installed in the default location. Show hidden files and then search the hard drive for the Backup directory.

You will need to restore it. The sidebar of your iPad appears on itunes even if you dont enter the passcode. There's the option to restore it. More info:

You will need to restore it. It may not sync, but the iPad's sidebar has to appear you can restore it and it will be as the last time ou synced it to iTunes. For more info:

  • Why won't iTunes automatically open when I connect my iPhone 6

iTunes is set to open when I connect my phone but will not do so. I have to physically go to the program and open it each time I connect my phone. This also happens when I connect my iPad mini. This began when I upgraded to the iPhone 6. Before upgrading I did not have this problem.

    Hey there Ray_J,
I understand that you want iTunes to be opening every time you connect your phone to your computer. You may wish to adjust this setting in your iTunes preferences to affect this behavior:
Prevent iPods, iPhones, and iPads from syncing automatically
Prevent devices from automatically syncing with this iTunes library when a device is connected. To sync a device, click the Sync button when the device is connected.

If this is unchecked, iTunes will open automatically when you connect an iOS device. Thanks for being a part of the Apple Support Communities!
    Cheers,
    Braden
