JASS/SVM mdmonitord fails - optional_all rpc/bind dependency
Installing SVM mirroring during Jumpstart. JASS disables rpc.
mdmonitord has optional_all dependency on network/rpc/meta which is dependent on network/rpc/bind and will not start until bind and meta services are running. SVM supports remote management functions which have to be disabled for this build.
I removed the dependency from the mdmonitor manifest and it starts. If mdmonitord does not start, all mirrors are in maintenance state.
I thought an optional dependency allowed the service to still start.
Did I miss an option on svcadm that I could add to my Jumpstart install service after JASS runs to force mdnonitor to start without rpc services ?
Thanks in advance.
Is network/rpc/meta enabled? (It's certainly possible that the interaction of JASS/SST and SVM's packaging operations is not correct.)

Can you please control the following points please?
That on node1 in the /etc/hosts file the name of the private interconnect exist. But on node2 or the failing node it's missing the private interconnect in the /etc/hosts file. That should be the reason why the issue occurs.
Solution of The Problem might be to :
1. Add the missing hostnames to /etc/hosts
2. Stop and start CRS stack
Please confirm that this solves your issue.

Host: Windows Server 2012 R2 with Hyper-V and RRAS (for Internet over NAT)
VM: Windows Server 2012 R2 with installed Active Directory Domain Services
When I open AD DS configuration window (“promote this server to a domain controller”) many services and programs on my host (include Hyper-V, RRAS & Server Manager) fails with RPC Server unavailable error.Hello Aleksandr,
There wasn't any configuration information, ipconfig /all, network setup, etc. So it's difficult to tell.
More importantly, are you trying to promote the host server? If yes, that is not advised, for one, because it's a Hyper-V server, (not suggested at all), and two, RRAS is installed. RRAS is problematic with any domain controller because it turns it into
a multihomed domain controller.

Networking?
I don't know how your networking is setup, whether there are multiple NICs on the host server, if they are teamed, if you have the host interface set to allow the operating system to share administration, or if there are separate interfaces for each. Can
the host OS ping/communicate with the DC virtual machine?
If there are more than one NIC, you have the choice to team the NICs and share the Teamed NICs for the Hyper-V OS and the VMs, or keep them separate where one is devoted for the Hyper-V OS, and one for the VMs.

Visual Studio gives the following error:
midlrt : error MIDL4034: Failed to load a dependency file. Windows.winmd (HRESULT:0x80070002 - The system cannot find the file specified. )
This is because Visual Studio is looking for a WinMD file that contains the base types. Unfortunately the metadata path passed by default to MIDL through Visual Studio does not resolve to the correct file.Work around:
Update the "Additional Metadata Directories" for MIDL to include the Windows.Foundation.FoundationContract.WinMD
To update the “Additional Metadata Directories” in Visual Studio, do the following:
1) Right click on your C++ Project file.
2) Choose properties.
3) Under Configuration Properties, click MIDL
4) Under MIDL choose “Command Line”
5) In the Additional Options text box enter:

Bare metal restore of full server backup fails with RPC error 0x800706BA (server 2012)
With Windows Server 2012, after creating a successful windows server backup (full server), I am unable to do a bare metal restore of the system.
EFI System Partition, C:, D: are the volumes on a single array (Raid 5).
Loading WinRE and launching re-image, the full server restore stops after completing the C: restore just after beginning the D: drive restore (data volume) with the error with the message about RPC error 0x800706BA, unavailable.
The system will not boot as a result of the failure.
What may be causing this?
[edit]
I think I have two things working against me here... one, Volume Shadow Copy service wasn't running in WinPE and two.. the D: volume contains data deduplication.
I think this is causing some of my problems.
Is there an additional service that I need to start in WinPE to get a volume that was deduplicated restored perhaps using wbadmin?Hi,
Thanks for the reply Shaon.
The hardware system is identical; however, I am increasing storage capacity from 12TB to 16TB. Basically, the system is the same, just new hard drives (4x4TB versus 4x3TB). Drives are all identical enterprise class drives and I am actually using
the same system (backup, swap drives then restore).
I tried both using the WinRE restore (re-image) with the backup set, and tried using wbadmin. Both produce same RPC unavailable messages (although using the GUI based tool via WinRE provides the additional error code #).
I do not have any idea what to look at to try to figure this one out.
[edit]
I was just informed of this posting:
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/147efccc-e0e9-4458-852e-c3a44ae5cb64/the-system-image-restore-failed-error-details-he-rpc-server-is-unavailable-0x800706ba?forum=windowsbackup
and in my case, this lab server does in fact act also as a DC as well as a file server... do I need to spin up a secondary controller (perhaps in a VM on another machine) to do this restore? -
Hi
Still learning PowerShell remoting.
Can access with remoting 2 computers (XPProf/SP3, Workgroup) perfect. Powershell2.0 (running as Administrator).
Using Firewall ZoneAlarm not Windows Firewall (stopped).
But when using Get-WMIObject always run into
"rpc server is unavailable" in one direction and "Access denied" in the other direction.
Searched the forum but didnt find infos.
Switched off Firewalls: Still the same.
So I'm stuck.
Any help is appreciated.
BeatYo encontré estas recomendaciones que me sirvieron para poder consultar el servidor remoto.
http://www.poweradmin.com/help/enablewmi.aspx
Allow WMI through Windows firewall
All users (including non-administrators) are able to query/read WMI data on the local computer.
For reading WMI data on a remote server, a connection needs to be made from your management computer (where our monitoring software is installed) to the server that you're monitoring (the target server). If the target server is running Windows Firewall (aka
Internet Connection Firewall) like what is shipped with Windows XP and Windows 2003, then you need to tell it to let remote WMI requests through2. This can only be done at the
command prompt. Run the following on the target computer if it is running a Windows firewall:
netsh firewall set service RemoteAdmin enable
Como segunda opcion tambien se puede modificar el group policy y especificar que ips tendran acceso a consultar el WMI remotamente.
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc738900(v=ws.10).aspx
Using Group Policy
To enable or disable the Remote administration exception
Open the Group Policy Object Editor snap-in to edit the Group Policy object (GPO) that is used to manage Windows Firewall settings in your organization.
Open Computer Configuration, open Administrative Templates, open Network, open Network Connections, open Windows
Firewall, and then open either Domain Profile or Standard Profile, depending on which profile you want to configure.
In the details pane, double-click Windows Firewall: Allow remote administration exception.
In the Windows Firewall: Allow remote administration exception properties dialog box, on the Settings tab, click Enabled or Disabled.

Fsck on /home ends with system shutdown
hello,
each time a fsck for /home is scheduled to run on my system it runs and shuts itself down after some time. when i run the system with fsck.mode=skip, umount and run fsck it runs successfully, same when using liveCD. i am using the following hooks:

anyone has an idea what could be causing this behaviour?
/home is ext4.

Authentication failed binding to mac server 2.2.1
I have setup a new Mac Mini Server running Mountain Lion 10.8.2 and OS X Server 2.2.1. I am trying to join my Macbook Pro to Open Directory however it continues to fail. It does prompt with the SSL warning which I select continue on, however when I enter the diradmin username and password I get an Authentication Failed message when binding. I can access the directory via workgroup manager ok and I have also been able to join my Synology NAS to the Directory Service first time.
Baffled and scratching my head. Any ideas?Server Version is 2.2.1 and it's installed on a Mac Mini Server running 10.8.2. Just a single OD server at present.
Future project: Can we make a Synology NAS which can also a be a Open Directory Server act as a Domain Replica? -
Sendmail dependency for multi-user milestone
I am currently setting up a CommuniGate mailserver on a Solaris 10 box . Starting the new service is hampered by sendmail running on the smtp port.
My question regards disabling sendmail services so that CommuniGate can do its own thing. The sendmail service is shown as a dependency for the multi-user milestone:
svcs -l multi-user
fmri svc:/milestone/multi-user:default
name Multi-user milestone

state online
next_state none

dependency optional_all/none svc:/network/nfs/client (offline)
dependency optional_all/none svc:/system/filesystem/autofs (online)
dependency optional_all/none svc:/network/smtp:sendmail (online)If I disable sendmail, will the multi-user milestone croak on startup? I'm reluctant to just try it, since I'm working on a remote machine without console access in case it does croak.
I've read the sections on dependency groupings (i.e. optional_all/none) but I'm still confused regarding the real links between services.
thanks for any clarification.....docmIf I disable sendmail, will the multi-user milestone
croak on startup? I'm reluctant to just try it, since
I'm working on a remote machine without console
access in case it does croak. No, not at all. There's a difference between administratively disabling a service and having it fail, and for a dependency to be "required" or "optional".
On this machine....
# svcs -l multi-user | grep -v online
fmri svc:/milestone/multi-user:default
name multi-user milestone
enabled true
next_state none
state_time Wed May 25 13:42:14 2005
logfile /var/svc/log/milestone-multi-user:default.log
restarter svc:/system/svc/restarter:default

dependency optional_all/none svc:/network/smtp:sendmail (disabled)
dependency optional_all/none svc:/system/mdmonitor (disabled)
dependency optional_all/none svc:/application/print/server (disabled)
dependency optional_all/none svc:/network/ntp (disabled)
dependency optional_all/none svc:/system/rcap (disabled)
None of the dependencies are required, so the machine still goes to multi-user...

Milestone HUP / post-milestone dependency failure?
Ok, I know that's a horrible subject line. Please bear with me.
I've been playing with the dependency mechanisms in b72, and have been unable to get an online milestone offlined by disabling a service upon which that milestone depends.
Disabling cron at the single-user milestone prevents
# svcadm -v milestone svc:/milestone/multi-user:default
from succeeding: svcs -a \*milestone\* shows the multi-user milestone is offline, svcs -xv says why, everything works as advertised.
Dandy.
A slightly different test is to cleanly come up to the multi-user milestone with cron enabled, show that the milestone was reached, and cron is online, and then disable cron.
The milestone is still reported as online, although it has lost a dependency. I guess milestones are... milestones, not states, per se, but it would be nice to demonstrate SMF noticing a subsequent dependency failure.
$ svcs | grep mil
disabled 9:41:17 svc:/milestone/multi-user-server:default
online 9:41:27 svc:/milestone/devices:default
online 9:41:32 svc:/milestone/single-user:default
online 10:48:41 svc:/milestone/name-services:default
online 10:48:51 svc:/milestone/multi-user:default
$ svcadm -v disable cron
svc:/system/cron:default disabled.
$ svcs | grep mil
disabled 9:41:17 svc:/milestone/multi-user-server:default
online 9:41:27 svc:/milestone/devices:default
online 9:41:32 svc:/milestone/single-user:default
online 10:48:41 svc:/milestone/name-services:default
online 10:48:51 svc:/milestone/multi-user:default
I've tried to nudge SMF by calling restart on the mult-user milestone, but no joy:
$ svcadm -v restart svc:/milestone/multi-user:default
Action restart set for svc:/milestone/multi-user:default.
$ svcs | grep mil
disabled 9:41:17 svc:/milestone/multi-user-server:default
online 9:41:27 svc:/milestone/devices:default
online 9:41:32 svc:/milestone/single-user:default
online 10:48:41 svc:/milestone/name-services:default
online 11:26:02 svc:/milestone/multi-user:default
$ svcs -a | grep cron
disabled 10:59:53 svc:/system/cron:default
From this state going all the way down to single-user and then attempting to get back up into multi-user fails, as it should. But that feels a lot like
# init s
# init 3
with fingers crossed.
So, two questions:
Is there a svcadm command that will effectively HUP a current milestone?
Is there no simple way to tell before the fact that a milestone is unreachable, or that a currently achieved milestone will not be achieved next time around?
Thank you for reading this far!
cheers,
kidariThere are characteristics to the dependencies within smf(5): grouping, which has to do with the set of entities and their necessity, and restart_on, which has to do with event propagation across the dependency link. If you use svcs -l on milestone/multi-user:deafult,

System/fmd:default failed: transitioned to maintenance. Can't clear
Hi all.
After our latest patching window on our Sun Solaris 10 x86 systems (SunFire x4200M2's), we have found the following error occuring across all our hosts:
SunOS somehost 5.10 Generic_127112-10 i86pc i386 i86pc
+Mar 1 15:26:17 somehost svc.startd[7]: [ID 748625 daemon.error] system/fmd:default failed: transitioned to maintenance (see 'svcs -xv' for details)+
We are trying to isolate the cause of why the fmd would not start. So far, we've tried to:
[root@somehost:/] $ svcadm clear svc:/system/fmd:default
...and we've looked at the output:
svc:/system/fmd:default (Solaris Fault Manager)
State: maintenance since Sat Mar 01 18:05:29 2008
Reason: Start method failed repeatedly, last exited with status 1.
See: http://sun.com/msg/SMF-8000-KS
See: man -M /usr/share/man -s 1M fmd
See: /var/svc/log/system-fmd:default.log
Impact: This service is not running.
So at this point, we thought to check if any dependencies were problematic:
[root@somehost:/] $ svcs -d fmd
STATE STIME FMRI
online 15:25:46 svc:/system/filesystem/minimal:default
online 15:25:47 svc:/system/sysevent:default
online 15:26:07 svc:/network/rpc/bind:default
online 15:26:10 svc:/system/dumpadm:default
...unfortunately, it seems fine! At this point - we thought we'd try to reload the smf manifest for fmd:
1. svcadm disable system/fmd
2. svccfg
3. delete system/fmd
4. import /var/svc/manifest/system/fmd.xml
5. quit
...and it STILL doesn't appear to have helped. The service is always:
maintenance 18:06:34 svc:/system/fmd:default
...any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks.

Deploy failed on Server AdminServer
I am deploying WebLogicFusionDemo. I using Jdev 11.1.1.4 and SOA Suite 11.1.1.4 to deploy Supplemental Instructions for Running Fusion Order Demo for Oracle SOA Suite
11g Release 1 (11.1.1.4.0)
However, in the step of running "build.xml -> server-setup-seed-deploy-test" (compile-deploy-all), I get error as follow:

Total time: 1 minute 11 secondsIt seems you have not set property "soa.server.oracle.home" in bin/build.properties correctly. Clemens has mentioned the resolution here (see the first one) -

This happens because the ExternalSupplierEjb has a dependency on a shared library that get's deployed earlier - and in this case case could not be deployed. The key is to get "soa.server.oracle.home" in bin/build.properties right.
In my case this property points to "/scratch/cutschig/fmwhome/AS11gR1SOA". In a sibling directory of AS11gR1SOA you should find the wlserver_10.3 directory (in my case /scratch/cutschig/fmwhome/wlserver_10.3)Regards,

Securing RPC services with TCP Wrappers
Hello All,
I have two node cluster running solaris 10. Since SVM needs few rpc services like metad, metamedd and metamhd, I dont want to disable them. But at the same time, wants to block them from outside world.
But readme page of TCP Wrappers (http://www.sunfreeware.com/README.tcpwrappers) says "The wrappers do not work with RPC services over TCP. These services are registered as rpc/tcp in the inetd configuration file". And other internet sources says same. So my question is this valid still?. Or it is possible to filter RPC services using TCP Wrappers.
When I tested this with following entries in /etc/hosts.allow and /etc/hosts.deny, my two nodes did not give any trouble after couple of reboots. SVM is working fine. So I wonder whether RPC services area really blocked (other than the local host) or not.
Content of /etc/hosts.deny
===========================
rpcbind: ALL : severity debug
rpc.metad: ALL : severity debug
rpc.metamhd: ALL : severity debug
rpc.metamedd: ALL : severity debug
rpc.metacld: ALL : severity debug
Content of /etc/hosts.allow
=======================================
rpcbind: KNOWN : severity debug
rpc.metad: localhost : severity debug
rpc.metamhd: localhost : severity debug
rpc.metamedd: localhost : severity debug
rpc.metacld: localhost : severity debug
Any hints/information regarding this will be really appreciated.Hello Mark,
Sorry that I missed to thank you in your last post.
If I get it right, The RPC bind program is used to maintain a table of dynamically allocated ports for RPC-based services.
From internet, "The file /etc/rpc contains a list of network services. Typically, when a remote machine wants to connect to one of those services on your machine, it first issues a query to the rpcbind program running on your computer. It knows the name of the services it wants to connect with, but doesn't know what port number to use. Your rpcbind will respond with a port number. The remote host will then attempt a connection to the specified port."
Also, Note that blocking rpcbind doesn't block access to the/etc/rpc services altogether. It does block access for those programs which do an rpcinfo query in order to reach those services. So other possible ways also exist to make remote connection without querying. Here lies the problem. I wanted to secure RPC services completely.
Coming to metad, it is true that ldd will result nothing related to libwrap*. But inetadm tells different story
inetadm -l /network/rpc/meta | grep -i wrap
default tcp_wrappers=TRUE
So encapsulating with tcpd should work for metad and other RPC services, I believe.
What is your opinion on this?. -
RPC: Authentication error while trying to mount a remote cdrom
On my Solaris 10 workstation I configured the following line in /etc/dfs/dfstab:
share -F nfs -o ro,anon=0 /cdrom/cdrom0
and restarted the nfsd.
dfshares says that it is shared: undine:/cdrom/sol_10_606_sparc undine - -
Now when I try to mount it on another Solaris 10 host like this it is not working:
mount -F nfs undine:/cdrom/sol_10_606_sparc /mnt
nfs mount: undine: : RPC: Rpcbind failure - RPC: Authentication error
Both Hosts are JASS hardened. I think there is a service missing.
The following services are available:
root@undine# svcs -a

commented out that line and restarted inetd
