Java -a more professional look

Hello,
Does anyone know an example of building a commercial application, where I can see the phases and understand why each part is useful.
Until now I only worked on small applications, and now I plan on building a more advanced one. I would like to know how people who work in the industry do them, so I can also develop my application in a professional way.
I know that this is a great place to find people who are excellent java programmers with a lot of experience, so if you can point me to any books, articles, or better a complete webcast (if there is any) I would be very very grateful to you.
I am interested in what technologies or tools(do they really make those UMLs?) they opt for.
ex: what they do at
- development( UML diagrams, interface creation(when they choose to create interfaces), choosing libraries to be used, data base creation, more attractive UI, security etc), what they do at
- deployment( how they use ANT or other facilities, how they create installer, how they count for different OS etc)
Regards and many thanks,
Ryan

I'd recommend as books: Code Complete by McConnell, Design Patterns by Gamma & al. and Refactoring by Martin Fowler.
In that order.
Code Complete goes through the whole software development process, so if you're in the beginning stage it'll contain a lot of information you didn't know of. (Then when you're in a later stage, it contains a lot of information you've forgotten about).Excellent choices.
I'd also recomend the timeless classic: "The Mythical Man Month", there are some choice pieces in there highlighted by the humore and experience of those that have walked and crashed on the path before. The humor will make it stick, but the lessons are none the less timeless.
My favorite quote: "You cannot put 9 women in a room and expect them to make a baby in 1 month."
I was actually able to use that on a manager one time, it really hit home with her and started her understanding of real development schedules and expectations.

  • How to get more professional look?

I know of and have read in other threads of things that can be done in pre-production and shooting to achieve a more professional look.
I was wondering if any pros out there have advice for the amateurs like me in terms of post-production. What can I do in FCP to give my DV footage a more professional appearance? eg - filters, etc or techniques?
    I appreciate the advice!

I assume that professionals often look at an amateur
production and say "if they only would have..." or
whatever. THAT's the information I'm looking for.
Yes. Here's my take. I'm a film editor who's had the privilege to work on $100 movies to $100 million movies.
STORY is king. If your story is working, and crafted well, and paced properly, you can get away with almost whatever you want. For instance, when I cut scenes, I cut for performance... I don't toss out takes because the glass of water was full in take one but empty in another. 9 times out of ten, even the seasoned filmmakers I'm working with never see the continuity errors because the performances are working.
Occasionally I work with first time directors, helping them with their first short. I see two main mistakes. First, they think that if someone knows how to operate Final Cut or an Avid, that they are an editor. This is simply not true. I know how to use a chisel, but there is no way in **** I could sculpt the David. Editing is the same: knowing what buttons to push is the least important part of editing. Knowing how to tell a story well is EVERYTHING. In fact, I know one Oscar winning editor who spent many years never touching the equipment at all. She chose the cut points, and had her assistants do the physical cutting.
The second main mistake amateur filmmakers make, IMO, is that they are not vicious enough when cutting their material. Every single frame of film you project should be conveying new information to the audience. If it's not, get it out. I once did a fixit job on a film for a first time director. The film was pretty funny, but he had shot all these long panning and dolly shots as establishing shots for scenes. I told him we should take them out, and at first he balked because one dolly shot in particular had been so difficult to set up and film. But the audience doesn't care about that. All they know is that they are watching a ten second camera move with nobody talking and no jokes in it. When we went through and pulled all this stuff out, it was like a completely different film. The director was overjoyed. Plus, without all this junk in the film, when you did choose to sit in a shot and have nothing happen for a few seconds, it then meant something. In a way, it was giving new information, even though nothing was happening.
That's my two cents worth. I haven't seen you're project, but I'd suggest watching it through again and question every shot, every line of dialog, every pause you have in there. Ask yourself "What new information is this element telling? Why do I have it in? Do I need it? Have I already told this story point?" etc. I suspect if you tighten the story you're telling so there are no wasted frames, people may not care as much about the handycam look.

  • Professional looking "slideshow"?

I'm trying to put together a sponsor presentation for our volunteer-run movie theater - which will run via DVD projector before each film. We have a lot of photos, logos and still images to work from, and I'll add music and titles and such.
But I can't seem to make the "slides" themselves look decent - I've tried messing around a lot with the whole Ken Burns effect, I've tried no Ken Burns, and nothing just looks as good and crisp as the slideshow function in iDVD - but with that, you can't add titles.
I know this is asking a lot, but is there some good advice out there? Are there some good all-round settings for using photos in iMovie that make for a professional looking presentation on the big screen?

no quite sure, what you mean by "looking decent"… ok, language barriers
    a) I personal like a neutral grey background for photos, and probably a thin white line around 'em... needs some photoshopping…
    b) have a look at the many options of Photo2Movie… uses "subpixles" for very smooth animations (slow=pride, important, … ehm, decent... )
    c) add lots of fade-to-black, a simple way to make pics "more important", because the viewers have some sec to take a deep breath.....
    decent enough ?

  • Is there a way we can edit and improve existing youtube videos by using premiere pro? Just simple changes like having professional looking opening and closing credits?

Is there a way we can edit and improve existing youtube videos by using premiere pro? Just simple changes like having professional looking opening and closing credits?

Assuming you do not have access to the "original" video/project and the YouTube video is the only copy, there is a method. Try "YouTube Downloader" which is a free software that allows you to download clips from YouTube as .mp4 files. You can then edit with Premiere, and re-encode again for upload to YouTube. Just keep in mind that you are re-compressing the video so there will be some quality loss. The better the quality of the original, the better the copy will hold up.

  • Give  a java program more resources...in JVM

Is there anyway to give a java program more resources? For example, is there a method System.getXXXX() which gives this program higher priority and resources in the JVM?
I ask because i have a bean running on ATG Dynamo 5.1 but it runs very slowly and i want it to have more use of resources then other beans.

Try running the application in its own server. Then you give give it the resources it needs.

  • How do I get a more modern look and feel for a compiled help file

I gather from reading various posts that there is no easy way
to generate a .chm file with a more modern look and feel (am I
right about this?). Are there no plug-ins available from Adobe that
will enable us to generate a help file that looks more modern?
I hesitate to move to flash help or something like that
because, of course, then the developers would have to hookup the
hundreds of dialog boxes we have in our product to the new files. I
also think that having one file is way easier to manage in terms of
getting updated help to the customers. What are online Help
developers generally delivering for apps where users are not
connected to the Internet except perhaps periodically while using
the software? I'm a writer (not a developer) so need soemthing that
    is easy to implement :-)
Thanks for your help. It is much appreciated.

To add to the advice already offered, you can apply a skin to
a CHM file which allows you to customise it. However as with most
things there are issues with this approach. You can read about this
    by downloading Rick Stone's excellent
    tips
'n tricks file. Just look in the index under "skins". Something
else you may want to look at is the beta of Adobe's
    AIR.

  • HT4296 What does this mean "remains disabled by default in this update"? Does that mean I don't have Java any more because of this update?

What does this mean (referring to the Java update on the Mac OS X 10.5.8) "remains disabled by default in this update"? Does that mean I don't have Java any more because of this update?

You should still have JAVA.  Open Safari, then in the top Menu Bar, click on Safari and pull down to Preferences.
Safari> Preferences> Security> and click check the buttons next to Enable JAVA and Enable Javascript.
You might have to restart Safari, I'm not sure about that.
    Good luck.

One of my job duty is web graphic
i use photoshop mainly during my working time
but my skill was not upgraded for 1-2 years , just repeat daily work only
how and where improve my photoshop skill within 1-2 week?  And be more professional !
    for example , i respond for a fashion jewelry shop :  www.gemztone.com

    Thank you any suggestion!

I see that Lynda.com has gotten a lot of recs, so will not mention that one (good though).
I also like the Adobe Classroom in a Book [fill in your version of PS here], Adobe Press. They will step you through several interesting projects, and expose you to much that is contained in the program. Most will also provide you with sample images to work with. To date, only CiaB Encore, was without sample files.
Early editions did concentrate heavily on the "how," but were lacking the "why." Most of the versions that I have seen lately, have added a lot more of the "why," and that can be so very important, when one translates their lessons to real-world work.
After that, there are many fairly specialized books for PS. Ones for a Camera RAW flow, retouching, 3D, motion in PS-Extended, and on, and on. Once you are comfortable with the program, define what you want to do with it. There will likely be a book for that.
    Good luck and enjoy,

  • Want to Make System More Professional

I have a new Intel Mac 2.7 and FCP and everything else. I currently hook up to an NTSC monitor and a DV deck and several SATA drives. I want to make my system more professional and able to handle broadcast and possibly HD. What do I need to do/buy in order to upgrade to that level?
    Thanks,
    Alex

    lots of memory - say 10GB RAM;
Dude...that is like WAY overkill. I have 3.5GB on my
machine and it is a pretty professional rig.
Perhaps you're right Shane, but my experiences tell me otherwise. I recently came in late to a big feature doc project which had grown absolutely massive project files - 80MB and beyond. The system had 2.5GB RAM in it, and it was almost impossible to do anything. Attempting to open any project resulted in system hangs or crashes. Reboots were constant. Work was impossibly frustrating. I upped the RAM to 8GB and the whole thing worked very well again - although opening projects was still slow, they finally would indeed open. I know FCP itself doesn't address more than 2.5GB of RAM, but lots of RAM really does help, particularly with workflows where you leave many apps open at the same time. However, at a guess I would say anything over 10G is a waste of hard-earned cash. And finally, always leave tons of swap space on that system drive.

Yes I know it's part of the help file for the program. I did look it up and to me it seems to be where the java looks for it.
I'm so sorry I can't provide much info on this :-(

There are a number of possible problems, but diagnosis may not be possible via this forum at the present time. I say this not to chastise you, but just as a statement of reality. Until you are able to concisely point us in a direction, there's just too many possible problems for guessing solutions.
If this is a commercial product, I suggest that you consider uninstalling it and then reinstalling it. This would usually resolve any installation errors. If this doesn't help, I would go to the vendor's website and look for solutions there; your problem may be well known to the vendor. If the vendor provides telephone support, it is your best bet for a solution.
If nothing else works, feel free to post here again and we'll try...
    Good luck

  • Thinking about adding more memory, Looking for suggestions

I have the late model (2008) 13 inch MacBook, alum body, currently have 2GB looking to upgrade to another 2GB or adding 4 to get up to 6GB. Is this possible with my MacBook? If so, can I buy it from Apple or are there other reputable retailers to purchase from? How easy is it to install myself?
    Thanks

    Hi El Kapitan,
Your MacBook supports a maximum of 6GB of RAM, although Apple only officially supports 4GB of RAM. So should you decide to upgrade to the 6GB option understand that if you require support from Apple (hardware or software) then you may run into some resistance.
Apple's RAM is more expensive then places like crucial.com or 4allmemory.com or macsales.com but you'll find a pretty 50/50 decision on what users prefer. I've gone the route of both (using all three of those above URLs) and I've always had a good experience. On the other hand, times where I've purchase the Apple RAM has always been just as positive with the additional peace of mind (dealing directly with Apple vs. 3rd party & Apple).
Installation is a little bit trickier (than say the white/black plastic MacBook) but nothing that I'd define as difficult. Here's the URL with an explanation - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1651
