Java files not compiling

i have 3 java files that im trying to compile for my CS class:
IntCalc.java
IntCalcPanel.java
IntCalcGUI.java
the panel uses IntCalc for an object and the GUI uses the panel as an object.
i cannot compile the panel or the GUI in the command prompt because it says
IntegerCalculatorPanel.java:17: cannot find symbol
symbol : class IntegerCalculator
location: class IntegerCalculatorPanel
IntegerCalculator calc = new IntegerCalculator();
^
IntegerCalculatorPanel.java:17: cannot find symbol
symbol : class IntegerCalculator
location: class IntegerCalculatorPanel
IntegerCalculator calc = new IntegerCalculator();
^
2 errors
even though all three files are in the same directory
these files WILL compile if i use an IDE. i tried jGRASP and they compile and run fine.
what do i do to fix this?

For classpath, you can shorten the word to "-cp", I
believe (it doesn't work on our Java at work, becauseNo, that will not work in this case!
-cp only works on the java command (to execute Java programs), not on javac (the compiler). Stupid, isn't it?
Make sure that your CLASSPATH environment variable is not set - that will make Java use the current directory as the default, and you won't have to type "-classpath ." every time.
If you're starting a serious project with lots of source files, I suggest you have a look at Ant to manage your build process.

• Problem - Scanner.java file not found

Hello all, I've been having a problem with a Java installation on windows vista. I've installed both the Java 2 1.4.2_16 sdk, and the Java EE 5 update 3 sdk. However, neither install contains the Scanner.java file... On my desktop running XP, this is not the case. I've tried reinstalling but to no avail. My classpath is set correctly because my programs compile that import java.util.*; But when I create a scanner object I get the dreaded can't resolve symbol error, but only when I compile under vista... Any suggestions? Thanks in advance :)

Scanner was implemented beginning with v1.5x, and comes in the JDK SE, not the EE.

• Files not compiling

Hello,
RH 8 and outputting a CHM.
When I generate CHM, I get an output message (in the Pod) that tells me 'the following files were not compiled.'
I've checked the files and they seem fine to me. In essence, they are no different than the myriad files that compiled successfully.
I know the ultimate solution will be to recreate the offenders...
But, are there any ideas about the cause?
An observation...things were generating fine until I output the same project as WebHelp. Post WebHelp, compilation has been wonky.
Thanks.

Hi all
Not intending to tread on Colums toes here, but I think deeper investigation is warranted. Was this project inherited from another author or have you always been the sole author?
Perhaps the .HTC files have a purpose you aren't currently aware of.
I'd say make a backup copy of the .HTC files before you do anything. You may be destroying something that took eons for someone else to create.
Just my $.02 worth. (Which means I think I owe you $250.00 given today's economy!)
Cheers... Rick

• Applet java file not refreshing in browser

I have an applet that I am updating and I am not seeing the corresponding update when I open the web page. I can manually download the java class file and look inside it and it definitely is the updated file. I have deleted the browser history. (I am running tests with Firefox 3, IE7, and Safari 4 public beta). Is there something else I need to do to make sure the browser pulls in the latest version of the class file referenced in the html?
Here is the code:

A Simple Program

<APPLET CODE="SendRequest.class" WIDTH="500" HEIGHT="150">
</APPLET>

The applet refers to a hard coded URL to read through a urlconnection. It is always reading a file and showing content, but it is not showing the right file. If I change the name of the referenced file in the java program, it looks like the browser has cached the referred file, rather than throwing and error and saying the file doesn't exist.
Here is the java
import java.applet.*;
import java.awt.*;
import java.net.URLConnection;
import java.net.URL;
import org.w3c.dom.Document;
import java.lang.String;
import java.io.*;
public class SendRequest extends Applet {
@Override
public void paint(Graphics g) {
g.drawRect(0, 0, 499, 149);
g.drawString(getResponseText(), 5, 70);
public String getResponseText() {
try {
URL url = new URL("http://myserver.com/stats/logs/ex20090603000001-72.167.131.217.log");
URLConnection urlconn = url.openConnection();
BufferedReader in = new BufferedReader(
new InputStreamReader(
urlconn.getInputStream()));
String inputLine;
String htmlFile = "";
try {
while ((inputLine = in.readLine()) != null)
htmlFile += inputLine;
in.close();
return htmlFile;
} catch (Exception e) {
return "Can't get the string.";
} catch (Exception e) {
return "Problem accessing the response text.";
}Any help would be appreciated. I heard that some files may cache more persistently than others, but I don't fully understand the details.
Thanks,
Jim

Check this [document loader example|http://pscode.org/test/docload/] & follow the link to sandbox.html for tips on clearing the class cache. That relates specifically to caching a refused security certificate, but class caching is much the same. As an aside, getting a console can be tricky in modern times (unless the applet fails completely). It is handy to configure the [Java Control Panel|http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/information/player.jnlp] to pop the Java console on finding an applet (Advanced tab - Settings/Java Console/Show Console).
Of course there are two better tools for testing applets, especially in regard to class caching. AppletViewer and Appleteer both make class refresh fairly easy. Appleteer is the better of the two. I can tell you that with confidence, since I wrote it. ;-)

[javac] List<AAbstract> ret = ListUtil.addAll(compounds, sensors);
It works in eclipse, but compiling by ant do not. I suspect some switch of javac - but do not know which.
Of course eclipse and ant uses same javac, it has set same java, javac.target, javac.source as well.
So why I compile with ant? I mention about ant but same situation will be with invoking javac from outside eclipse.

Different compilers handle generics slightly differently. Sun's compiler tends to a bit dumb when it comes to inferred types. I suggest you try the following which may help, or get a clearer error message.
List<AAbstract> ret = ListUtil.<AAbstract>addAll(compounds, sensors);
BTW: what is wrong with the List.addAll() method?
public static <T, F extends T, E extends T> List<T> addAll(List<F> list1, List<E> list2) {
List<T> ret = new ArrayList<T>();
if (list1 != null) ret.addAll(list1);
if (list2 != null) ret.addAll(list2);
return ret;
}

Editing other domains is a scenario fraught with peril, which is why it was
deprecated and removed from the console. It looks to me that the error
message sums up the problem, ther eis no applications directory in the
peoplesoft domain? Have you tried creating that directory from the file
system?
cheers

We get the followign when we navigate to the 'Peoplesoft' domain and then
add a servlet and attempt to "persist".
everything else seems to work fine.
By navigating to the peolesoft domain, we open the default server
and use "edit other domain" to pull up the console. then navigate toportal ->
edit descriptors.
OS is an Win2k Server.
Thanks in advance for any help.

• Java file not included .

I have:
import org.eclipse.swt.widgets.Shell;in my program. But this is showing a 'cannot resolve' error.
I found that this file was actually in a winzip extractor,so I extracted it in the workspace folder .But it is still not accessible.
I cannot figure out from where the program is importing it's file.
What is the problem? Where does the folder "org/eclipse/swt/widgets" need to be ?

It's in a jar. Probably SWT.jar. Include that in your library path, although I'm guessing you're using Eclipse, it usually has a class library specifically containing SWT dependencies. Read teh docs

• Changes in server side java file not reflecting in Client side java code?

Hi friends,
iam using eclipse IDE, JBoss server, SWING GUI and Oracle DB
( looks like : SWINGGUI (Client) <--> EJB's (serverside) <---oracle )
my problem is , when i make change in server side bean file, that changes are not reflecting in GUI programs.
(for ex: iam adding settr and getter for a field and using that in GUI program. but its not identifying that setter or getter).
please tell me what should i do for every change done to server side program, that should reflect / available to GUI?

my problem is , when i make change in server side bean file, that changes are not reflecting in GUI programs.
(for ex: iam adding settr and getter for a field and using that in GUI program. but its not identifying that setter or getter).what do you mean it's not "identifying" the methods?
you have to call those methods you know
are you getting NoSuchMethodError?
please tell me what should i do for every change done to server side program, that should reflect / available to GUI?you haven't posted any code or error messages that might help us debug

• Can Java reflect not only .Class file

Hi' i'm newbie in this topic, i'm really appreciate if somebody can help me..cos i'm really stuck in here...
My Problems are :
1. i want to ask about this, can Java reflect from .java file?
2. i'm using Eclipse IDE, i'm really interesting about how JTree or Package Explorer in Eclipse can always displaying update information about class structure? but .java files not compiled, how can? if Eclipse using reflection, .java files must be compiled first, correct me if i'm wrong?
The fact is Eclipse don't have to compiled .java files to get the update information about class structure and displaying in JTree or package Explorer...how implement like this?
what i mean like this :
ex : if i type int x = 100; (not only int, it could be anything else..) at the working files, JTree or Package Explorer in Eclipse can always update the informasion about class structure, but .java files not compiled..
i hope my question are easy to understand, i really need some help..
Thanks a lot..

hey, thanks for the answers, but i would like to ask :
1) Eclipse performs background compilation of the Java sources, then performs reflection on those temporary classes++ if i'm using this way, how about the performance? seems that it will be compiled all the time right?
2) Eclipse has access to the results of the Java source code parser, and can extract the information from the java syntax parser, before it gets to the compilation stage.++ how to implement this? what do you mean about java syntax parser?
do you know where i can find any article about this?
thanks a lot again...

• Java Mapping - Not able to compile .Java file

Hi Experts,
I am working with a sample scenario which involves Java Mapping. For this I created MappingClass.java file, After compiling the .Java file .Jar file would be used for Java Mapping by using Imported Archives.
After compiling the MappingClass.java file, I am getting the errors as below.

• "Java file" & "Jsp file" compilation issues in Eclipse

Hi,
Eclipse
Question 1:
I have set the value for preference->java->Installed JREs as : j2re1.4.2_07 not to jdk
When I write a java file, its compiling, how? From where its using "javac" exe file for compilation.
Question 2:
Whereas in prefrence->Tomcat->JVMSettings -> JRE(drop down box) set value as j2re.1.4.2_07
When I write a jsp file as follows
index.jsp

<%java.util.Date d = new java.util.Date();%>
Todays date is <%= d.getDate()%> and this jsp page worked!

when i try to save this file & strat tomcat I got exception as follows:
Exception:
org.apache.jasper.JasperException: Unable to compile class for JSP
An error occurred at line: -1 in the jsp file: null
Generated servlet error:
[javac] Compiling 1 source file
Please clear my doubts.
Thanks,
Hari

Try going into your TOMCAT_HOME/conf/web.xml and look for this section:
<servlet>
<servlet-name>jsp</servlet-name>
<servlet-class>org.apache.jasper.servlet.JspServlet</servlet-class>
<init-param>
<param-name>logVerbosityLevel</param-name>
<param-value>WARNING</param-value>
</init-param>
<init-param>
<param-name>fork</param-name>
<param-value>false</param-value>
</init-param>
<load-on-startup>3</load-on-startup>
</servlet>
Change the <param-value> for fork from false to true and see if that helps.
Otherwise it's a problem with your JSP.

• [weblogic-9.1] JSP 2.0 tag file gets compiled but not reloaded

I am trying to use a JSP 2.0 tag file on weblogic 9.1. Everything works as expected until I reload the page after changing the tag file. Consider the following files, simple.jsp and simple.tag:
h5. /simple.jsp
<%@ page language="java" %>
<%@ taglib prefix="sandbox" tagdir="/WEB-INF/tags" %>
<html>
<body>
This output comes from the jsp.
<sandbox:simple>
</sandbox:simple>
</body>
</html>h5. /WEB-INF/tags/simple.tag
<%@ tag language="java" %>

This output comes from a tag file

The output of a call to simple.jsp is:

This output comes from the JSP.

This output comes from a tag file

So far, so good. Now I change the content of simple.tag to
<%@ tag language="java" %>

This output comes from *simple.tag*
On a new call to simple.jsp,
1. Weblogic notices that the file has been changed,
2. generates the TagHandler .java file
3. compiles the .java file
But the new class file seems not to be loaded by weblogic; the resulting HTML does not change. It is not a browser cache issue, as I can see Javelin compilation errors. E.g., changing the tag file content to
<%@ tag language="j" %>

This output comes from simple.tag
leads to the following (expected) error:
Compilation of JSP File '/sandbox/simple.jsp' failed:
simple.tag:1:18: "j" is not a valid setting for the language attribute.
<%@ tag language="j" %>
^-^
Changes to the .jsp file are reflected in the HTML output.
Am I missing something? Is there any flag I have to set in my weblogic configuration?

You are right in saying that decoding has nothing to
do with rendering per se.I will go even further than Erik did, and dispute this statement.
Consider that you are generating an tag for a text field. Among other things, you have to generate a "name" attribute. Who decides what to put there? The renderer that actually created the markup.
The "renderer" really does
two completely different things. But both should
nevertheless be separate from the component
implementation itself. You could still have the
renderer doing the decoding part, which arguably would
rarely change, and somehow delegate the actual
rendering to an implementation in a tag file.Whether you implement decoding in a separate class or inside the component, what request parameter name do you look for? It is not reasonable to assume that ALL possible renderers will choose the same parameter name ... hence, decoding and encoding are inextricably linked (the code doing the decoding has to know what kind of markup the code doing the encoding actually created). In JavaServer Faces, the current APIs create that linkage by requiring that the decode and encode be done by the same class (either the component, if you are not delegating, or the renderer if you are).
