Java on FREE BSD

Hi!
Can Java run on freebsd?
I am planning to create a server running ung freebsd. I stumbled on a forum post that installing java on freebsd is kind of difficult (you need to compile)

To be brutally honest, most Intel / AMD X86 / X86-64 machines will blow the processors off of a Sun Blade SPARC workstation. However, please don't let that discourage you as it can handle everything you have mentioned and much more. Also, if I were you, I would get the Sun Blade 2500 Silver edition with dual 1.6 ghz and no less that 4 gigs ram. This is the machine that I own and picked it up on ebay for about $600 and it's very nice. SUN workstations have a much higher quality building engineering, thus the hardware is top notch in that respect. Running Solaris 10 on this machine and you will have an EXTREMELY stable platform on which to work. I own one of these systems and run Solaris 10 and inside Solaris 10 I do Solaris 9 and Solaris 8 development / testing running each OS in its respective zone. Consider this the VM technology of SPARC Solaris. :) You're absolutely correct in that Solaris is a very powerful UNIX operating system and the integration between SPARC and Solaris is unmatched when comparing to the X86 world. The closest competitor is Apple, which are also very nice.
In conclusion, I absolutely love my SPARC Sun Blade 2500 Silver and highly recommend any enthusiast to pick one up on ebay for cheap.

  • Are Java Interfaces 'free'?

    From a performance point of view, are Java interfaces free?
    That is, if I have:
    class Foo
    public void bar() { ... // some code }
    }and I change it to:
    interface Foo
    public void bar();
    class FooImpl implements Foo
    public void bar() { ... // some code }
    }And I call one or other of the Foos like
    Foo foo // A parameter, field or local variable.
    foo.bar();Does calling foo through an interface add any overhead that calling it direct in the first example not? As I understand it, all methods are 'virtual' in Java, so it should perform the same in either case.
    Thanks for any of your thoughts.

    Basically, don't worry about it. Worry about writing clear, correct, object-oriented code.
    Wierdly enough, in the long run, that is more likely to help than anything else you can do, should (and if) you ever need to worry about optimization in the future.
    WinstonThanks for the advice. I can write good clear OO code. I am now at the future and worrying about optimization, so have made it past the second rule!Then you exactly know where your bottleneck is from the profiler you've used. Did it tell you that your interfaces are the bottleneck? If so, why do you even bother to ask here?

  • Why java is free?

    I don't understand why java technology is free to download, and even more of this, the source code is available.
    I think sun can make a lot of money from us. (without giving ideas)

    They're trying mic$ofts trick - for years micro$oft offered wondoze on easy to copy disks, with little or no security (even though they could have implemented some kind) knowing that people would pirate it, and spread it around very quickly. Then, when most of the computing world is hooked on using windoze, they upgrade to a flashy secure version that you have to pay loads for. It was a gamble, but certainly paid off. What sun are doing is the only possible tactic for them at the moment, which is to spread java as much as possible to ensure loads of people use it - they are not doing this for fun, or the love of the language, but purley and simply as a business strategy.

  • Best way to learn Java. Free resources online?

    Hello. I would like to start to learn Java but have no programming background except for Visual Basic and the basics of PHP. I started to learn about a week ago and now have a good understanding of some of the basic concepts, such as the IF, SWITCH, LOOPS, PRINTLN, ect. I am very interested in developing applications for the Blackberry and was wondering where I should start and what I should learn. Must I learn the entire Java programming language to start to develop mobile applications? Are there any free resources on the Sun Java website that would be able to help me learn?
    Thank you

    The Java language itself is the same when developing for mobile devices (except you may be forced to rely on an older version of the language). But debugging/deployment/running your code becomes more complicated as soon as you target mobile devices.
    Therefore I suggest you take some time to learn "normal" Java development. It will definitely pay of in the long run.
    Are there any free resources on the Sun Java website that would be able to help me learn?There are [the tutorials|http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/]. They are pretty useful.

  • Problem installing Free BSD 64-bit with VMware Player on Thinkpad W510

    I installed VM Ware Player on the latest Thinkpad W510 with a 2.66ghz Intel processor. I am getting an error message indicating that the CPU doesn't support long mode. I was advised by the freenode #freeBSD channel that long mode is x86_64/amd64/emt64. This same channel also suggested that I tell vmware it was a 64bit guest. But I don't know how to do this. How do I do this? VMware Player didn't offer me any user options during the install. Is this something I should setup in the bios of the Thinkpad? Or something else? Is there more than one version of the VMware pLayer?

    Look on BIOS if VT is enabled.
    Best regards.

  • Using headless with JAVA 1.3

    i have wrote a program which draws images, acording to its input.
    when working with java 1.4, one can set the system property "java.awt.headless" to "true", and by that creating images in offscreens programs.
    I am using a server which runs on Free BSD, and java 1.3 and it is not working there.
    what else can i do to make it work?

    Maybe this will help you:
    http://lists.isb.sdnpk.org/pipermail/comp-list/2002-September/001276.html
    Quoting:
    For those using JDK 1.3 and before, there's the Pure Java AWT (PJA)
    Toolkit, available from eTeks. It's a headless Java server that's
    configured
    in much the same way as the 1.4 Sun version, via a set of -D property
    flags.
    You'll need to download the jars, put them in your classpath, and then
    set the following flags:
    Dawt.toolkit=com.eteks.awt.PJAToolkit
    Djava.awt.graphicsenv=com.eteks.java2d.PJAGraphicsEnvironment
    With the IBM JDK, you may find you need the following properties where,
    lib/pja is the location of your PJA jars:
    Djava.awt.fonts=$JAVA_HOME/jre/lib/fonts
    Djava2d.font.usePlatformFont=false
    Duser.home=lib/pja
    You can download the PJA Toolkit from eTeks' Web site.

  • Setting Up a Java Web Server on Linux

    Greetings,
    After a lot of reading, I've decided to learn Java server-side technologies (I already know Java (desktop)
    but with little experience) in order to develop my database driven dynamic website projects.
    However, I'm completed lost between the hundreds of acronyms related to Java and the "thousands" of technologies involved.
    Google hadn't help me understand what they really are and how they relate with each other.
    Even though is easy to find what they stand for and some faqs/descriptions, it hasn't been enought to clear my mind.
    I want my webserver application to do, among other things, the following:
    Retrieve Data from a database, do generate dynamic html files.
    Story Data on the database, from html forms.
    Send automaticly emails for multiple users. (newsletter for example)
    E-Commerce.
    Html graber/parser (I don't know if this is the right word, I mean a program that for example, goes to a URL with an html
    table, and stores that information in a database table, as long as the format didn't change).
    Real Time Chat feature.
    Database connection pooling, caching, and other important optimizations.
    I'm not asking for how to develop or configure this features nor what components and programs, must be installed.
    At the moment, I only want to know how to set up a Java solution that will support them when they are needed.
    *** Linux ***
    I want to set up my webserver on a linux distribution.
    In that respect, I don't know if I should choose RedHat or Fedora Core.
    I've heard that fedora is better for a webserver (having in mind that Red Hat Enterprise AS/ES aren't free).
    But I've read in several sun turorials/webpages references to RedHat (on a J2EE context).
    So I'm wondering if is better to go for Fedora or RedHat. Are there pros & cons? They equally support Java?
    *** Technologies ***
    Then in starts the acronyms problem.
    What do I need to install, in what order, for what?
    Some aconyms and technologies, I have read about but don't fully understand are the following:
    Apache
    J2EE
    J2EE 1.4 SDK
    SUN Java System Application Server Platform Edition 8
    J2SE 1.4.2 SDK
    SUN Java Enterprise System
    Tomcat
    Struts
    Cocoon
    JBoss
    I already know J2EE is only a specification. What implements that specification? Sun Java System Application Server?
    J2SE SDK? or Tomcat?
    What is the role of each technology, namely Apache, Tomcat, Sun Application Server?
    What is the Sun Java Enterprise System?
    How do Struts, Cocoon, JBoss relate to Java?
    Which of these technologies are mutually exclusive (analogous)?
    *** Doubts ***
    Then, I have some doubts that are keeping me from starting to study seriously the important techonologies, because I don't
    want to lose lot's of time and effort learning them to after a dillusion start everything again with PHP (the language
    which make me think and read a lot before going for Java). To keep this from happening, I would like to know the following:
    I want to use Java for developing websites with commercial/profitable use for my company, in some throught e-commerce,
    and in other by banners. I want to do everything by the book, with required licenses.
    ------ Java is Free?
    Is Java Completely Free or it might be possible that at a certain point, when I need some component or library,
    multi-machine webserver, performance or security for high-traffic I will see "buy now" instead of "download now"?
    For what they may "ask for money"? and what are the disavantages if I can't buy?
    For example, "Java System Application Server Standard Edition 8.1 2005Q1" and
    "Java System Application Server Enterprise Edition 8.1 2005Q1" cost $2.000 and $10.000 respectively. That is money.
    (http://www.sun.com/software/products/appsrvr/index.xml). What are the disavantages if stick to the free edition?
    Features like (from sun site)
    Standard Edition:
    Extends the capabilities of the Platform Edition to provide secure, remote, multi-instance, multi-machine management.
    It is aimed at high-volume applications and Web services.
    Enterprise Edition:
    Further extends the capabilities of the Standard Edition to provide continuous availablity for applications and
    Web services. It is aimed at business critical, high value applications and Web services.
    Suppose I achive lots of traffic and I keep the free platform edition.
    I won't be able to have a multi-machine webserver set up correctly?
    What are the drawbacks? How big are the performance penalties?
    ------ Technologies Availability
    Finnaly, I have the idea (I don't know if it's accurate) that there are Sun versions and Open-Source Free versions
    of doing or supporting the same Java related thing.
    Despite the way I choose to set up a Java webserver, I will always have all J2EE techonolies like:
    Java API for XML-Based RPC (JAX-RPC), JavaServer Pages, Java Servlets, Enterprise JavaBeans components,
    J2EE Connector Architecture, J2EE Management Model, J2EE Deployment API, Java Management Extensions (JMX),
    J2EE Authorization Contract for Containers, Java API for XML Registries (JAXR), Java Message Service (JMS),
    Java Naming and Directory Interface (JNDI), Java Transaction API (JTA), CORBA, and JDBC data access API.
    I really appreciate some help. I could learn the basics of all this "stuff" before asking. But the point why I'm asking
    is precisely not starting to learn something I may won't use. Obviously, I will have to make a lot of reading during maybe
    months before writing the first line of code of my projects, but being certain that it will fit my needs.
    I will be very thankful if you can enlightme in my fedora/redhat, setup, free/cost and technologies avaibility issues.
    Thanks Beforehand,
    Pedro Vaz

    Apache is a free Web-server.
    Tomcat is a servlet (and JSP) container. It can be stand-alone or can be used together with a Web server (like Apache).
    J2EE's scope is much wider than the servlet stuff, but a standalone Tomcat is a good starting point to servlets and JSP.
    One of our "real-world" applications is run by a standalone Tomcat using POI and Velocity. I did not regret this architectural decision.

  • How to find out memory of a java card

    is there anyone could tell me that how can we check the size of the memory of a card? thank you in advance:D

    If the card is a Java Card 2.2.1, create an applet that returns

  • Help with 'Thinking in Java' excercise

    Have been working through the excelent Thinking in Java book (free download from www.bruceeckel.com) but cant understand one of the excercises from chapter 6. The question is:-
    " Create two classes, A and B, with default constructors (empty argument lists) that announce themselves. Inherit a new class called C from A, and create a member of class B inside C. Do not create a constructor for C. Create an object of class C and observe the results."
    I'me OK with all this apart from the "and create a member of class B inside C", I dont understand what this means. Is member the same as object, in whitch case douse it mean create a object of class B in C?
    Ben

    Sounds like a private data member:
    public class A
        public static void main(String [] args)
            C c = new C();
        public A() { System.out.println("Created an A");
    class B
        public B() { System.out.println("Created a B");
    class C extends A
        private B b;
