Java or Visual C++

I must choose between Java and Visual C++ to write an application running on a windows / linux doing
- display of windows / pictures
- database access (flat files)
- TCP networking (client)
I know already VC++ and being in the process of learning Java.
Question: besides cost and speed performances, what VC++ can do that Java cannot perform?

The main reason to choose Java is because of the Java platform itself. Rapid development, rich API set, easy debugging and no Microsoft policies that force you to port code when they release a new version of their platform. For the three tasks you mention Java has very easy to use API's readily available:
- windows/pictures -> Java SWING and Advanced Imaging / ImageIO
- database access -> JDBC
- TCP networking -> Java sockets, either regular stream IO or the more powerful NIO

There are examples of white papers on OTN which show how you can integrate Java Beans into the Forms UI.
You may have some success with Swing but forms is based on AWT/EWT of which there was only and old (and not
very good) Swing version.

Is it a bug in Java or Visual C ????????

There is a problem in this mathematical expresasion.
int a=10;
a=a++ -10;
this gives a value zero in Java while the same code gives a=1 in Visual C.
Why there is differnt result? where would the value of a (after increment) goes in case of Java??

Programmer is a programmer whether writes in java
or cobol language.That's somewhat true, but it has nothing to do with this. Two different programming languages could use the same symbol in different ways. Things are different between languages.
It like that in many areas. 'die' is a verb in English, or 'the' in German. The same thought can require a different symbols in different languages. The thought is the same, but just because the words look similar doesn't mean they are
If you didn't need to know how to do things differently in one language vs. another, wouldn't that mean that if you can program in one, you can program in any language without knowing the differences in the two languages just because you are a 'programmer'
You can still apply the same logic to programs in different languages, but implementing that logic in the specific syntax of a particular programming language is programming.

Start by creating your SQL statement and iterating throught the ResultSet. Once you know how to do that, instead of outputting the data you simply build a DefaultTableModel and create the JTable.

Java Programming @ SAP - the poor cousin?

Recently I' ve started a kind of poll in the Java forums asking if someone knew any enhancement possibilities for java-side development at SAP mentioning the ABAP customer exits, BADIs, customer includes and enhancement spots as example.
Guess how many answer I received - from WDJ, Java Programming, NWDI and NW Java from: None! All the gurus who usually bubble over with wisdom remained wondrous silent. I also run over help pages searching for some hints regarding this - in my opinion fundamental - questions, with the same result.
Has really nobody at SAP spent a thought about one of the most precious features SAP offers its customers - the possibility to enhance delivered standard-programs and thereby adapt them to their needs without modification?
How are we as Java programmers then supposed to stand the mistrustful glances of our ABAP collegues who wonder why there has been so much noise about this Java thing in the recent years. Thinking about the disadvantages a developer working with Java at SAP has to bear compared to his ABAP collegue - no direct data access, no comfortable debugging possibilities, lots of standalone tools with strange UIs (SDM Remote GUI, Visual Admin - only to name the least glorious ones - he to manage and - last, not least - no chance to enhance SAP Standard programs modification free I have to agree upon one ABAPers opinion on Java: "The hype is over!".

I get the question - should I do my development in ABAP or Java - quite often. My answer has become "It Depends." I getting pretty good at those ambiguous consulting answers, aren't I.
In all seriousness I really do think the answer depends upon several things. As a company or development group you should analyze the skills that you already have in house. As you have seen the two development environments are quite close. The advantages of one over the other will continue to vary over time. ABAP will add nice features from Java and vise versa. In the end it is more important that companies leverage their skill sets and existing infrastructure (Software Lifecycle Landscape) to their maximum.
If you are already a java shop then it makes sense to continue down that development path because your developers will still be very efficient even if they have to access ERP and other SAP application logic and data via RFC or Web Services.
On the other hand, ABAP certainly isn't as dead as some people claimed it would be by now. Thanks to Web Services ABAP has more flexibility than ever before. It isn't nearly the closed box that it used to be. Also the workbench team isn't going to stop innovating either.
The next question I get is what does SAP do internally when deciding on a language to use. To a large extent they use the same criteria - what existing skill sets do I have to work with. They also look at where the data is located.
That means products like Portal aren't about to change from Java to ABAP. On the other hand ERP suite development is still heavily ABAP. The new UIs coming from ERP will primarily be done in Web Dynpro ABAP.
Even in some newer products that haven't been released yet - the UI was done in Java or Visual Composer and the backend business logic was done in ABAP. It is all about taking advantage of the unique strengths of each environment and the skill sets you have in each.
In the end I don't think Java is the poor cousin any more than ABAP is going to die. Look at NetWeaver CE and the huge investment SAP has made on top of Java Development there. At the same time our investment in Java has not come at the cost of the ABAP environment. Innovations will continue to take place there as well. I can assure you that within SAP it is the hope and goal to have two top notch development environments within NetWeaver.
Now let me share a little story with you. My background is obviously ABAP and I doubt I will ever lose my particular passion for the environment. At the same time I have done a fair bit of NetWeaver Java development in the last year and half or so. I'm not a super deep expert, but I can hold my own.
I recently had a requirement to build an MDM Application. I only had two days in which to build it. My choices were to use the Java API or the ABAP API. They are quite similar and both meet all my interface requirements. I was building a Web Dynpro UI, so the end user wouldn't be able to tell the difference. Interfacing capabilities being the same and UI output being identical - my decision came down to the environment where I personally could be most efficient. I could have completed the project in either environment. But because I knew the ABAP Programming Environment (you know the stuff that goes beyond the basic syntax - the real knowledge that lets you squeeze every last drop of performance out of an application) so well I personally could build the best application in the shorter time in ABAP.
Now someone with a different background might well have taken the Java path and done just as well. This is the advantage that SAP provides by continuing to support both ABAP and Java development. Does every feature and function of both environements line up exactly - of course not. I'm sure they never will. But do these differences keep experts in either environment from being able to make any application do amazing things - certainly not. Personally I feel less constrained in either ABAP or Java today than I have ever felt programming before.

Administration differences between an As Java system and an As ABAP system?

Hi, I'm not that familiar with SAP systems that are As Java based only, so apologies in advance if I ask real stupid questions here!!
Can someone please explain how one logs onto an As Java only system?... ie without the ABAP stack does one still use the SAP logon pad or am I getting confused here totally???
Also how does one do transports in an As Java system?

You can login through browser, use NetWeaver Administrator for most of your activities. There is also Visual Administrator/ Config tool etc these have seperate GUIs.
It would not be easy to list out the options but i suggest you read understand info from help regarding the details below so that you can administer Java servers:
Visual Administrator
NetWeaver Administrator
Config tool.
SDM
With the knowledge of the tools above you can start of administrating Java servers.
Also how does one do transports in an As Java system?
You install Portal on Java server and then do transports. You should be having a system administration role.
Please do a search in help.sap.com and you will find loads of data on WEBAS Java administration.

Debug .JAR in Visual Studio

I have a .JAR file, and I want to debug it in Visual Studio. I need the final result to be again a JAR file.
I'm looking for VS intellisense support, step by step debugging, and on the fly variable watch and editing.
I'm not looking for migrating to .NET framework dependency. I want the final result to be 100% compatible with the original JAR file.
I suspect that I may migrate this java file to j#, and after debugging migrate it back to java, but I need to use Regular Expressions in the application, and I know that .NET RegEx is not compatible with Java Regular Expressions.
I found those instructions:

but they don't work. Just allow to use VS as text editor, and call a bat file to compile Java.

Just get Eclipse, Netbeans or IntelliJ free edition - they all include java debugging (I don't think VS does).
If you only have a Jar with class files, you also are going to need a decompiler.
I don't know what you mean with 'final result to be java again'- debugging doesn't chance the code so you can just use the original. If you do want to make changes, you'll have just compile and jar it up again.

3524-XL w/GBIC Visual Switch Manager

I have a Cisco 3524-XL switch w/ 12.0(5)XU Enterprise Edition OS
Been using the Java-based Visual Switch Manager to manage it, no problems.
I added a 1000BaseT GBIC, and everything works mechanically and thru telnet, I can manage the switch. Everything works.
But now when I try to use the Visual Switch Manager, I get the following Java Error:
"Visual Switch Manager has detected a change in the devices hardware configuration and needs to redraw the device." I say ok, and it comes back again, and again, etc. The running config has been saved and rebooting does not help. Tried a coupla versions of Java(Sun's). Currently using 1.4.2_07
Any suggestions?

try upgrading the image of the switch, also run the latest Java plug in software. this should help.

Your request is not clear. What do you mean by added to the domain?
But if you have connected exisiting sap system on the network (ABAP+JAVA) then visual administrator should work as it is. Please check your network connections are ok.

Unable to start java tools - Error : Environment variable JAVA_HOME not set

hi all,
I am not able to start the java tool - Visual Admin, Configtool, etc in the solaris Bash shell.
I was given authorizations on solaris and i'm able to view the logs and browse in solaris boxes,
But, when i try to start Visual Admin, it says" ERROR environment variable JAVA_HOME not set "
Since,my colleagues are using this tool for years, how come the environment variable is not set only for my user profile ?
Is it like the environment variable has to set seperately for every user profile ?
Do i need to set it initially for my profile eventhough it is working for others ?
i am confused..please help.

Ofcourse, I use my login ID to use java tools and they use their's obviously.I don't use <SID>adm.
We WRQ reflection for X-Windows and Putty for Command line Solaris Access.
When i try to use VA through the X-Window tool WRQ reflection, I am not able to start the tool.
My doubt here is, Do we need to setup the environment variable for every new user initially for the first time ? ( I am a new user for this environment )
Supposing if i need to setup the environment variable, do i need to set it up for the all the Solaris Boxes i use ?
I am able to browse through the files.when i try to start the VA by giving ./go i am not able to start it up.

How to make a really basic pong game for a beginner

Hello. I've read through a couple of threads on here dealing with making a game of pong in LabView, but in them the users had questions with far more complex aspects of the program than I want to deal with. I am a beginner programmer in LabView with limited experience in Java and Visual Basic programming. I was tasked with creating a game over winter break, and now that I finally have some time (this weekend that is), I decided that I'd make a really simple game of pong. However, I have seriously overestimated the difficulty of this for a beginner who has very limited knowledge of Lab View.
I ask you to please have some patience with me.
I know what I want to do, and just need help inplementing it.
Here is the idea for my design to keep it as simple as possible:
-Create a field (I am not sure what to use for this, but from my reading it appears that some sort of a picture output is needed, but I cannot find that anywhere).
-Set up some simple function that can output the dimensions of this field to use with collision tracking.
-Create a ball that can be tracked by the program.
-From my reading I understand that the simplest way to "bounce" the ball off the sides appears to simply reverse the X velocity of the ball when it strikes the vertical boundaries and the Y velocity when it strikes the horizontal boundaries.
-Insert some sort of a "paddle" that the user can control with the left and right arrow keys.
Now, as I have mentioned I am a beginner with approximately one month maximum knowledge of this software, spread over about a year. I want to take things slow. So for starters, would anyone be willing to walk me through creating a visual output for this and creating a ball that will bounce off all sides?
If I can at least get that far for now, then I can move on (with help I hope!) of inserting an interactive interface for the "paddle."
I have found some LabView code for a simple game like this, but it also includes a score keeping loop as well as an "automatic play" option, and I am attempting to wade through all that code to find the bones of it to help me with this, but due to my inexperience, this might thake a lot of time.

Wel, there is the picture indicator in the picture palette. In newer versions it's called "2D picture". The palettes have a search function. Using the palette search function is a basic LabVIEW skill that you should know. If you've seen the example for the other discussion, it uses a 2D boolean array indicator. The boolean array is only recommended for a monochrome very low resolution display.

That seems backwards. Properly programmed, the code always knows the dimension and the ball position. The program generates, (not tracks!) the ball movement. Of course you need to do some range checking on the ball position to see when it collides with the walls.

Start with the posted example and delete all the controls and indicators that you don't want, then surgically remove all code with broken wires.
Alternatively, start from scratch: Create your playing field. Easiest would be a 2D classic boolean array that is all false. Use initialize array to make it once. Now use a loop to show the ball as a function of time.
Start with a random ball position. to display it, turn one of the array elements true before wiring to the array indicator using replace array subset.
Keep a shift register with xy positions and xy velocities and update the positions as a function of the velocities with each iteration of the loop. Do range checking and reverse the velocieis when a edge is encountered.

Hi All,
I have an issue an implementing the "Exporting the Table data to Excel."
My VC version is 7.0
Portal version NW 2004s.
By refering the following link, i have implemented Export To Excell functionality in VC.

By refering the above link i have done the configuration.
I am able to run the application. After i run the application . once i click on the button 'ExportToExcel' i am getting the following error.

See the details for the exception ID in the log file
Then i have relized that, my portal sever doesnt have the BI java. So in that document will work for only when the BI java and visual composer running in the same system.
As my my BI java is available in another server. In the document it is clearly mentioned in the last page in the following things need to be done in my case.
" If your BI-JAVA and Visual Composer are on separate AS JAVA components, you will need to map a Remote URL iView of your BI-JAVA system Web Analyzer if it is different than the Visual Composer system."
Can any tell me how to do this configuration to work.
