Java terminating other programs

Hi,
Is there a way to write a java program that will terminate other programs? i.e. if I have internet explorer and firefox open, can I write a java program that will terminate the two browsers? Thanks

pb,
No,
internet explorer = windows
kill = unix
It's a piece of cake in VB6... so I presume there's an winblows API for it.

  • Help needed with operating java on other programs

    I have a fairly difficult (I think) question.
    I am trying to create a program to enact itself on other programs.
    It needs to perform 4 functions.
    1) Open an exe (such as notepad)
    2) Use the exe to open another file (such as a .txt)
    3) Find the color of a specific pixel on the screen (ie, (300,800)) and
    4) Pull a number from a field in the program
    I would apprieciate any help on this, whether in the form of an answer, or a url that could help me with it.
    thanks

    you could try shell commands to the dos prompt like:
    try {
         Properties systemProps = System.getProperties();
         String osVersion = systemProps.getProperty("os.name");
         if (osVersion.equals("Windows 98"))     {
              Runtime.getRuntime().exec("start \"notepad"");
         else if (osVersion.equals("Windows 95"))     {
              Runtime.getRuntime().exec("start \"notepad"");
         else {  // win nt (2000 or xp)
              Runtime.getRuntime().exec("cmd.exe /c notepad");
         }catch(IOException err) {}Or locate the notepad.exe and use the runtime class to launch it, to open a txt file is exactly the same but substitute the txt file name instead of notepad, that should launch notepad and open the txt in it, if you mean open notepad and then control it and open a file, that java can?t do, need another language to do it or work with another language and java together. Not sure about the rest,

  • Using Terminal to program and test java.

    I bought a book on java and it says I should not use a JDK when first learning java.
    Right or wrong I would like to know how to use terminal to program and compile simple scripts.
    So my question is:
    How do you go about setting up the computer to use terminal to write and compile a java program?
    I know that’s pretty big question. I just need a link to some info on how to get started using terminal and java.
    If I use a text editor how do I set up a path to it using javac?
    Where can I find or link to this kind of info?

    David Bixler wrote:

    I think they mean IDE, considering that Java is the JDK. And I agree with that idea, not just for Java, but for any language.
    How do you go about setting up the computer to use terminal to write and compile a java program?
    There isn't anything to setup. Just run Terminal and type "vi hello.java" or "nano hello.java". To compile, type "javac hello.java".
    I know that’s pretty big question. I just need a link to some info on how to get started using terminal and java.
    That is not necessarily a big question, just fundamental. Try Google. It becomes second nature after a couple of decades so I don't really know where to tell you to look. People do tend to have a big list of links, hopefully they can contribute some.
    If I use a text editor how do I set up a path to it using javac?
    It should already be in your path.
    Where can I find or link to this kind of info?
    Try Google. People like it. You should find many pages similar to this.

  • How to create a java card library (jar file to be used in other programs)

    Hi all,
    I am working on JCOP and writing quite a bit of applets for the java card . Now i have lots of code that could be reusable for example sending SMS, encryption routine, etc.. So this part of the code i want to put into a utility class and create a package out of it. This utility package i must be able to import into my programs what i write.
    I tried the normal way of creating the jar by renaming the CAP file of the utility class, also tried including the /javacard/* files also into the jar file as indicated by sfarmer(active forum member here). But none seems to work. I tried contacting NXP folks and they indicated that it may be possible only by way of Sharable Objects.
    But some how i am not convinced why i should use Sharable object for this. So if any one can throw some light into this regard it will be immensely helpful to me and my project.

    Hi,
    Well the variable defined are as below
    public static byte[] msgdata = new byte[255];
    private static final byte[] HEADER_TEMPLATE = {
              (byte) 0x81, (byte) 0x03, (byte) 0x01, (byte) 0x21, (byte) 0x00, // Command details tag
                   (byte) 0x82, (byte) 0x02, (byte) 0x81, (byte) 0x02, // Device Identities tag
                   (byte) 0x8D, // Text String tag
                   (byte) 0x00, // length
                   (byte) 0x04, // Text String tag
    the msgdata is declared public so that i can access this as a Class member in my other program doing Utilities.msgdata. But the problem is now that if i dont declare it as final then the compiler gives me the below error
    "library has initialized array for non-final, non-static field Utilities, msgdata, [B, attr jc-field: tok 0, public static"
    If i make it final then i cannot change it... So now i am stuck..
    Any help will be highly appreciated...

  • Interfacing a java program with other programs

    Hi there.
    I'm curently working on a project which will involve communication between a java program (the project) and other programs, not necessarily in java.
    I know there is the good old "socket method" to handle the communication, but ... are there any other methods ?
    Thanks for help.

    Communication... what's that?
    Have the two programs share a database. Have them send e-mails to each other... the list goes on.

  • Subtle bug in Deitel & Deitel "Java How to Program" book

    Merry x mas and happy new year, guys.
    I have this applet (which is at the same time runnable and listener) its printed in Deitel & Deitel "Java How to Program" book 3rd ed.
    The program works but as you turn on and off the "suspend" checkboxes some of the threads are not notified, so they go to infinite wait state, deadlock. I couldn't figure out what is wrong or how to fix the problem.. please read the code below, or copy and paste this code to your eclipse, its just one file, then play with the check boxes, some of the threads don't wake up after wait... technically they don't shift from WAITING to TIMED_WAITING state.

    No, notifyAll() is used to tell the threads that we're stopping.... see that it's written in the stop() method of the applet. Eg if the user browses away from our applet we set the array of threads to null and notify them all. So notifyAll() makes sense.Yes, it does make sense there too (!!!!!!!).
    However, I gave it a try with what u suggested, and it didn't work (as expected) .... Apparently you did not really read my suggestion or my explanation. If you had, you'd have expected it to work and it would have worked.
    the problems still remains, some threads are getting in wait state even if their check box is not suspended.Maybe you should add the following code to understand the root cause and solution.
        System.out.println("Thread " + index + " will wait to be notified.");
        wait();
        System.out.println("Thread " + index + " was notified.");
    what could the problem be?Improper use of notify()

    Dear SDN Users,
    This is how I resolved the issue.
    1) Requested ABAPer to provide me sorted data. The data has been sorted in descending order of actual_cost.
    2) After that I used following code. This resolved the issue.
         if (wdContext.nodeItab_Final1().size()>10){
         IPublicCostcnt.IGraphDataElement categoryElement;
              for (int i = 0; i < 10; i++) {
              categoryElement = wdContext.createGraphDataElement();
              categoryElement.setCostElement(""+ wdContext.nodeItab_Final1().getItab_Final1ElementAt(i).getDescription());
              categoryElement.setActualCost(wdContext.nodeItab_Final1().getItab_Final1ElementAt(i).getActual_Cost().toString());
              categoryElement.setPlannedCost(wdContext.nodeItab_Final1().getItab_Final1ElementAt(i).getPlan_Cost().toString());
              wdContext.nodeGraphData().addElement(categoryElement);
         if (wdContext.nodeItab_Final1().size()<=10){
         if (wdContext.nodeItab_Final1().size()>0){

              for (int i = 0; i < wdContext.nodeItab_Final1().size(); i++) {

  • Handling exception logging in a Java task scheduler program?

    I need to design a Task Scheduler Where
    1) User should be able to schedule multiple task at the same time.
    2) There should be proper error handling on failure of any task and should not affect the other running tasks.
    I found the related programme at http://www.roseindia.net/java/example/java/util/CertainAndRepeatTime.shtml
    My concern is about handling of point 2 in program provided at above link. Say I schedule a recurring mail send process in above program which will be run first time on 12 september 2011 at 2 am, and will be repeated after every 2 hours Say a one process fais at 8 am. I want to log it in log file with task name and time details. Now if I look at above programme i.e CertainAndRepeatTime.java. This program will exit once it schedules all the tasks. Where and how should handle the logging?
    Posted at http://stackoverflow.com/questions/7377204/handling-exception-logging-in-a-java-task-scheduler-program but folks suggesting Quartz scheduler . My Limitation is that i can't for quartz because my project allows me to use only standard java library. Is there any way we can handle logging in the same programme in case of exception.

    Well, first of all I wouldn't trust any code from roseindia. So you might want to look for more reliable advice.
    As for your logging, you can add it for example to the TimerTask itself. I don't recommend adding logging to that roseindia cr*p though.

    I think java will come in handy if you are developing Netweaver portals applications using Web dynpro java  or  jspdynpage applications.  In the latter, it is very important to know java very well.  With web dynpro, a lot of the coding is hidden from you, but you still need to know the basics of java and oo programming concepts.
    I noticed that you have already marked your post as "solved on my own".  I would suggest reversing that unitll your question has been answered completely.  When people see the blue star, then usually don't bother to read the post, hence limiting your answers.
    Once your question has been answered, award point accorindly.  Welcome to SDN!!

    I have tried all possible configurations of classpath with mysqlconnectorj and Tomcat, but i could not find any solution. Plz help urgently. Thankz a lot.

    Your DB connection is probably failing
    As a result your result set "rs" is null when you get to it later on, causing a null pointer exception.
    Do you need to provide a username/password for your database?
    Have you configured your database to allow connections from localhost?
    If you haven't already figured it out, doing SQL programming in a JSP is bad practice. Put your SQL code into a java bean / class where it belongs.

  • Other programs in windows

    hi
    i was wondering if there was a way to see the text in text boxes in other programs when the user has their mouse over it or just any text box in general. i am trying to make a program that uncovers the asterisks in a password but i am stuck on how to do this. is there a class in the java api that does this? if anyone could help or give me a website address that could help id greatly appreciate it
    i would also like to be able to read the keys that the user types while my program is running in the back ground and be able to change what they have written. does anybody kknow of a way to do this?
    i know it can be done in visual basic using the windows api. is there a way similar to this in java?
    also is this even in the right forum? which one shoudl this be posted in?
    thanks

    i would also like to be able to read the keys that the
    user types while my program is running in the back
    ground and be able to change what they have written.
    does anybody kknow of a way to do this?We used to do this with a hook into the keyboard driver--interupt chain--in assembler and C. You can also do it by peeking into the system event queue. In any case you are not going to do it with Java, but you can set up JNI to read from a dll you develop in Assembler/C to do what you want.

    thanksYou probably should go over to the JNI forum or possibly the "I watch too many spy shows" forum.
