Javascript popup in secondary display displaying on primary monitor

OSX: 10.9
Safari version: 7.0
Hello,
I recently upgraded my operating system from 10.6 to 10.9.  While on 10.6, I was using Safari version 5.0.5 but after upgrading, version 5.0.5 will not work so I am now using Safari version 7.0.  I have noticed that when using multiple monitors, JavaScript pop ups initiated from a window on the secondary monitor will not display on that (secondary) monitor.  It seems that the pop up's coordinates are overridden and display on the primary monitor as close as it can to the secondary (all the way to right).
For example:
Using FireFox version 25.0
1. Go to jsfiddle.net
2. Enter the following in the JavaScript window and click “Run”:
window.open('http://www.google.com','google','height=500,width=1000,left=2100,top=100');
3. Notice that the pop up will display on the secondary monitor (increase left start if needed).
4. Repeat steps 1 and 2 using Safari version 7.0.
5. Notice that the pop up is not in the same location as step 3.
Does anybody know a way of getting around this?  The example above is just an example to see the problem I am referring to.  I was wondering if there was a way in Safari to get around this rather than changing the JavaScript.  I like using Safari but may need to change browsers if not.
Thank you,
-Brian

Hi, I'm also testing dual screen for mac mini these days.
It seems like, if two displays are connected (mini-DVI and mini-DP)
Mac mini displays the boot screen to mini-DisplayPort.
So, if you want to see boot apple logo, that monitor should be connected to DisplayPort.
This seems correct, however, Mac OS X itself (and Windows) have both defaulted to using the Mini DVI connection as the primary monitor. Which means I can't just switch them around.

How can I set Finder to display to 2nd monitor.  I drag it to the second monitor, but it still display on primary monitor when next opened.

Thank you for your reply. No other program behaves this way, even PhotoShop CS4. It is related to how the program handles OS events.
It is probably a problem with the Windows WM_GETMINMAXINFO and WM_SIZE handlers. My guess is that program stores the maximized size (and it always fills the screen at start-up) and it query to see if it is dragged to a larger screen.
Of course, this theory doesn't address the disappearing program behavior when maximized on the secondary monitor. Since I don't have another OS, I cannot check if it is Vista related or Windows related. Because of the difference in architecture, I'd be surprised if it happened on a Mac, too.

  • How can I select the secondary display in a multiple display setup?

I am using a 2012 Mac mini with Thunderbolt and HDMI video outputs to run the multimedia display at our church.  The Thunderbolt port drives a Dell Monitor acting as our primary display.  The HDMI output is set as the secondary display and goes into a splitter so the signal can go either to a small TV beside us in the balcony or into an HDMI selector which then feeds into another splitter which delivers signal to both a 80" TV on the balcony wall and to a Peerless HD flow which transmits the signal to TVs up front.  The issue is the mac will register three possible options for the secondary display (the small monitor TV, the Sharp TV on the back wall, or the HD flow system).  I need it to consistently select one of these, preferably the HD flow system, since that will become bogged down with resolutions higher than 720 p.  Can anyone lend me some advice?  I've included a simple diagram of the situation.  Thanks!

Thanks.  Bummer about the image.  It really helps make sense of the layout. I can see it, but that doesn't really help anyone else    Do you know if the mac "remembers" the last used display and selects that one or what would be the parameters in selecting which display it actually settles on among the choices?  Is the first to 'wake' or the last?  We have changed the startup sequence and can't seem to get consistent results.

  • Can I change which display is primary and which is secondary on my Macbook?

I'm using an external monitor with my Macbook, and I can easily change the arrangement of the displays. However, I would like the dock and menu bar to be on my bigger external display, but I haven't found a way to do that yet. Is it possible to make my external display the primary one and my Macbook the secondary one? Thanks...

System Preferences / Displays / Arrangment.
The display that has the white stripe at the top is the "primary" one, in the sense that the desktop will be on that display.
You move the stripe - it's really the Menu bar - by dragging it.

  • In a multiple monitor situation, how do I get popup windows to open on the same monitor as the parent application is displayed.

I have two monitors. I have an application that I run all day, displayed on my secondary monitor. Whenever a popup windows is launched form that application, it always opens on the primary monitor. Very annoying. Any way to get the popup to launch in on the same monitor as the parent application?

Did you solve this problem ?

  • MacBook (2006) HDTV Secondary Display Issue (no streaming video)

I've searched the discussions as thoroughly as I could before posting. I do not have the same issues as many others connecting their Macs to HDTVs for primary or secondary display.
I recently bought a Sony Bravia (KDL-32EX710) and displays the desktop beautifully at 1080p with just the Mini-DVI to VGA cable. However, the only thing it does not display, without a workaround, is streaming video from websites like YouTube, various Gawker media sites and similar sites. For example, going to YouTube loads the entire page with playlists, comments and the audio comes through but nothing but a black box where the video should be (controls are also hidden).
To view videos, I have to drag the Safari window to the MacBook's display to start the video then move it back over to the secondary display to view it. Or, I have to enable the video to be viewed in fullscreen (usually by chance) to be able to see the video.
Watching videos from the local/network drives are fine. Watching streaming videos from Netflix are fine (via Safari). Does this seem like a Flash issue as the problem videos seem to depend on Flash?

It seems updating Flash (for Safari, Firefox and Chrome) did the trick.

  • Desktop pictures do NOT rotate/change on secondary display

For some peculiar reason, my desktop pictures do NOT change / rotate on my secondary display.
I have a MacBook Pro 15" (Late 2007) running Snow Leopard 10.6.2 and I have dual displays. My primary display (the MBP screen) DOES change / rotate picture every minute, but I want my secondary display to do the same.
It seems that restarting does fix it, but only temporarily. I think it might have to do with plugging/unplugging the secondary display and sometimes if it's working, I disconnect and reconnect the monitor and then the pictures stop rotating.
All my desktop picture settings are correct in System Preferences. I tried unchecking then rechecking the "Change picture:" checkmark, but that doesn't fix anything. I also tried clicking on different folders in the left column of the Pref Pane, then clicking back on my chosen desktop pictures folder.
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

I discovered that for this particular file if you check the "random order" box under Desktop preferences, then the pictures will rotate like the rest of the photo files in the collection

  • How to get rid of finder bar in secondary display on Mavericks

I'm use the secondary display but I don't want the finder bar to be shown how do I delete that option?

Ah - thank you very much for reminding me about that!
I'd seen that option a couple of days back but hadn't pursued it because I didn't want to do the logout/login required to activate the change at that time.  Since then I've been putting up with the secondary menu bar and - more significantly - apps which used to exclusively open/live on the secondary display defaulting to the primary display.  That was really beginning to bug me and has also been solved by this change so, thanks again for the reminder.

  • HOW TO? Send secondary display to Apple TV (Airplay mirroring)

I have a 2012 iMac. It has a secondary display attached through HDMI. It runs Mountain Lion.
    I just an Apple TV.
I can mirror the primary iMac screen.
I would like to instead mirror the secondary display.
    Is this possible?

    Hi _MicMacs_,
It sounds like you've been on the right track in trying to sort out this issue. I'm a bit unclear on what you are describing when you say it works initially, but then immediately reverts when you click back on something in your primary display. You may want to try sizing the window to the display instead of using the full screen option (two opposing diagonal arrows), though this will leave the window border around the screen. For a bit more background on working with multiple displays in Mavericks, you may find the following article helpful:

  • Full screen video on secondary display

I am using a Sharp LCD as a secondary display on an Intel 24" iMac using Snow Leopard.
In Quicktime I am able to watch a full screen movie on the secondary display whilst working on the iMac.
However when watching youTube or other wed-based video on full-screen the video reverts out of ful-screen mode the moment the mouse is clicked anywhere on the primary display. Is this big only with Snow Leopard?

I think I'm having the same problem. My TV is set up as a second monitor, and in the past I have been able to select "full screen" for videos playing on that monitor to see them full screen on that monitor. Now, when I select "full screen" (whether the video window is on the TV or my main computer monitor), both screens go black. I get audio, but don't get video. It doesn't seem to matter what view was selected before selecting "full screen" (i.e., "actual size", "half size", "double size", "fit to screen"). *****.
I've gotten around this by playing videos using Quicktime, but I just rented a movie and Quicktime doesn't seem to work for that movie. So I'm going to watch it ghetto style with the title bar on the screen.
Video card is a GeForce 9600 GT. Vista x64 running on a Core i7 processor. Just upgraded to the latest version of iTunes a few minutes ago and the problem persists.

  • New windows open in secondary display

I have two displays connected to my computer and when I start Firefox the browser window always opens in the secondary display. How can I make my primary display the default for the browser windows?
    Thanks,
    David

It sounds as though your Mac thinks the option key is held down. If you launch something with the option key held down, it will launch in the background.
Perhaps it is LaunchServices database problem. Here's the Terminal command for rebuilding it: /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister  -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain userI believe OnyX has an option to do the same (see below).
I don't know of a global preference to always open in the background, but you might check some tools like [OnyX|http://www.titanium.free.fr/pgs/english.html] or [TinkerTool|http://www.bresink.de/osx/TinkerTool.html]. Both of those allow you to modify certain behaviors by setting hidden preferences.

  • HT5891 Is there a way to remove the menu bar from a secondary display while still using the "Displays have separate spaces" mode?

Is there a way to remove the menu bar from a secondary display while still using the very useful "Displays have separate spaces" mode?
The reason I ask is that most full-screen video playback in most applications, from iTunes to Flash/Silverlight plugins do not take up the full screen, instead leaving space for the menu bar (in the case of iTunes) or leaving the menu bar present on top of the video (for fullscreen Flash/Silverlight videos).
This is annoying for several reasons ranging from the obvious distraction factor to the fact that 1080p video is not played back at native resolution on a 1080p display.
If there is no way to disable this functionality while maintaining separate spaces, I would (humbly) suggest that a future update to Mavericks allow non-Lion-style* full-screen apps to take over the entire display.
*Lion-style full-screen apps are those that animate into a full-screen mode when the opposing-arrows full-screen button in the upper-right-hand corner of the window is pressed.

No. Turning that off reverts to the old display setup. You have one desktop spanned across all displays. The menu bar appears on the primary display only.

  • LR 4.3 / Secondary display problems

I switched from LR2 to LR4.3 and I am facing lot of problems with secondary display use :
       * The secondary display LR4 looks like to use wrong ICC profile. When I put the secondary window in the middle between primary and secondary display it seems to be ok (homogenous colors on the two part of the window betwwen both sreens) then when I move it more on the secondary screen, it becomes ugly. I guess it is a problem of color profile. What is very strange is that with LR 2 it is still working perfectly (so I am sure it is not a problem of hardware, nor WIN 7 issue) but a problem with LR 4.
        * I was using "Display" mode on the secondary display to put stars on the pictures (sorting them). With new version (LR4) I can't anymore acess in modification to the number of stars in display mode. Is there a way to modify that (setting ?).
    Thank you.

Failure to load the correct monitor profile for the secondary monitor has been an occasional OS bug on both platforms.
I have a wonderful (and free) little utility called Display Profile.exe, originally made by X-Rite, to confirm profile per display. But it seems they stopped offering it, can't find it on their site...
