JDK/Java on XP

Has anyone been using windows XP? How well does Java/JDK/J2EE work on it. I've read that it doesn't come with JVM loaded, and one has to download a patch. From where?
Kamran

Hello Kamran,
I am mostly a Win2k user but lately I've been doing most of my work in Linux/Solaris platforms.
I like them all and we should give credit to all of them. The thing that gets me riled up is this windows-bashing mentality. Sure they have bugs but doesn't anything made by humans also have bugs? ;-)
Anyway, I like Java and am starting to do more programming with it at work even though VB is also available.
This is what I'm getting next month (your needs may not be as high)
1. Get an Athlon (cheaper and outperforms Intel) - I'm getting a dual Athlon 1.8 XP (T-Bird 1.4GB is a fantastic chip)
2. Lots of ram (I'm getting 1GB) at least 512MB DDR
3. Get a good controller (preferably SCSI) and Lots of HD (I'm getting 29160 Ultra 160 with 3 x18 GB 10K rpm drives)
4. Get a PCI motherboard with no ISA slots on it.
Like I said, I'll leave my current machine to run Win2K server and my new one to run a multi-boot 'Nix-based OS's like Solaris 8, Linux, and OpenBSD. If I have room, I may install WinXP on it too ;-)
Good luck,
C

  • WHICH JDK java hotspot I  need for weblogic 10.3.6  SOA 11.1.1.7 and OSB 11.1.1.7

I used jrockit but somebody told me that It will be good to move to JDK 1.7.0.28 because jrockit will gone in future.
WHICH JDK java hotspot I  need for weblogic 10.3.6  SOA 11.1.1.7 and OSB 11.1.1.7?
and where can I download it?
    Thank you

    Hi,
For WL 10.3.6, SOA/OSB 11.1.1.7 the Enterprise Deployment Guide has still jrockit sdk 1.6 as recommendation...
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E28280_01/core.1111/e12036/create_domain.htm#CCHBFCDC
The roadmap is to converge jrockit and hotspot JVMs, completion of the convergence project is targeted for JDK 8.
    http://www.oracle.com/us/corporate/press/1854982
Things are already changed for 12c, but for 11g I'd still go with jrockit...

  • Update JDK:Java Security alerts and CPU patching

what should we do if we already have updated the JDK in various oracle database homes? Should we revert / downgrade to JDK back to the original version or let stay with updated versions per previous Java Security alerts and CPU patch availabiltiy notes? as in MOD doc id:1449674.1

CPU is a quarterly update containing all (security) patches that are important but do not need immediate implementation. Other alert patches are more important and should be immediatly implemented.

  • Regarding compatibility etween IBM JDK & Java JDK

    Hi All,
Can I migrate a java code written in Windows & Java JDK 1.7 to AIX & IBM JDK 1.7 ?
Will there be any compatibility issue between these two environment ?
    Thanks in advance.

Yes you can since Java is a standard and it shouldn't matter which implementation you actually use. However there are always issues with the environment itself - the OS, the hardware, the file system, the user rights, the availability and version of installed libraries. Don't expect the stuff to just run out of the box, there are too many variables outside the control of the JVM for that.

  • Help! how can I update JDK from 1.3 to 1.4 for Java Swing correctly?

Urgent! currently I meet one trouble for GUI display, which is developed by Java Swing when I update my JDK1.3 to 1.4. I use JRun as web server and all of the GUI Java Swing code developed based on JDK 1.3 and before I update, all of the GUI display is correct and there are no problem, but after I update to JDK 1.4, I always meet this kind of problem "java.lang NoClassDefFoundError" which is displaye on Java Console and "Exception:java.lang.NullPintException" is displayed on GUI. Sometimes, I need to try two times to display GUI(Jave Swing), then it can work. Could you give me a fever and show me how to fix this problems? which kind of change in JDK Java Swing package?
    Thank you much.
    Steven

I have recompiled app. by JDK1.4 and I also changed classpath but I can not fix the problem. The strange thing is that I can view the The same GUI(Java Swing) which is installed in another computer using the same JRUN too, but in local computer I can not view the GUI. Do you have some other suggestions? Why Can I view the same GUI instaaled in another computer?
    Very Thanks

  • New to java, having trouble with Installing JDK on Ubuntu

    Hello, everyone???
I'm try to install j2se jdk-1_5_0_15-linux-i586-rpm.bin on my Ubuntu Linux 7.10, I ran the self-extract file and everything just seemed fine. But when I get to setting the system environment variable , something must have gone wrong. I have read from books which say that I should set 'CLASSPATH=.:/usr/java/jdk1.5.0_15/lib/dt.jar:/usr/java/jdk1.5.0_15/lib/tools.jar'. But I can't find a 'tools.jar' file in the 'lib' directory. There is a 'tools.pack' instead of it.
When I try to test the installation with: 'javac --version', I got :
Error occurred during initialization of VM
    java/lang/NoClassDefFoundError: java/lang/Object
I don't know why. Do anybody can help me with this problem?

I used the Synaptic version of Java. I don't like where it puts the JDK in a protected folder. I want development stuff in my home folder. The Sun download with the NetBeans is the best, IMHO. You put your install where you want it. NetBeans then slams the pathname with every javac and java you run. Works great for development. Then, becomes the FireFox problem -- the java plug-in. Because I'm AMD-64 I have to use the IceTea java plug-in.
Would Sun please, please write the 64-bit plug-in?
The last irritating problem you will have is running java from a Terminal. That takes internal links in your File System. You can do what NetBeans does: java -classpath=~home/desktop/jdk1.6.1/bin/myPrograms myProgram. Or, you can make SymLinks. I keep a bookmark to this topic from the Ubuntu Forums:

  • Java 6 JDK For MBP 2012 ML?

Hi. I want to pursue Java programming, but I need the JDK (java deveopment kit) for Java 6 for Mac... I went to Oracle's site and they have a ton of different downloads. There is an FAQ for mac users but they provide no information what so ever for downloading the correct JDK... Does anyone know where to get the java 6 JDK for mac ml?
Much less important, and just a side question, does anybody know if the LWJGL- lightweight java game library (for Java computer games) from lwjgl.org is a safe thing to download? I need it to fix an audio issue with a game.
    Thanks.

Sounds like you have a lot to learn here and I'm probably not the right person to be giving you advice since I've never even been close to doing anything beyond using Java. I do know enough to be dangerous, but limited mostly to it's vulnerability these days and most of how it interfaces with OS X, but there's still a lot of holes in my knowledge base, especially these days.
My impression was that you planned on doing Java 6 development since you were asking about obtaining it's JDK. I couldn't help but wonder why you wanted to start there, but figured you had a reason. Java 6 is all but obsolete now and although there is still a bunch of code that requires it, I don't see any point in developing anything new there.
But to try and answer your last set of questions....
I also need to install the Java 7 Update 15 right? From the Oracle Website?
Yes, but if you are going to use it for development you will need to get the JDK from Oracle, not the JRE from java.com. Go to Java SE Downloads and under "Java Platform, Standard Edition" use the download button under "JDK".
Whenever I go to terminal it says 1.6.0_41, that is due to the fact that there is technically 'two' java's on a mac, correct?
The Terminal process "java" only knows about one set of Java code and for now that is Apple's because it knows where Apple stores Java SE 6. I am told that once you install JDK 7 then it comes with a new "java" process which only knows where Oracle stores Java SE 7, so it will start reporting only 1.7.0_xx.
It's not unusual for there to be more than one Java installed. For years there have always been two to three versions at the same time. You controlled which ones were enabled by using the Java Preferences app. It usually wasn't a problem to have more than one enabled as the software application would look for the one it needed and only use it. There is no more Java Preferences and the Java Control Panel only controls Java 7, so there seems to be no way to enable or disable Java 6 when it is installed. Apple says it's not required, so maybe it isn't important.
we have realized that there are two versions: the one that terminal tells you about, which I have. and the one that is either in 'system prefs' or the ultility 'java prefs', which I do not have.
The other (Oracle's Java 7) is only controlled using the Java Control Panel which can be accessed from System Preferences->Java and you apparently don't have it yet.
That means that I do not have the Java installed that the exploit has to do with, correct?
That's not at all important. Both have many vulnerabilities, just not exactly the same ones.
I suppose Oracle's version and Apple's version just use the same numbering which confuses me/other people.
Not sure how you came to that conclusion. I thought I had been pretty clear that Apple provided Java SE 6 1.6.0_41 and below and Oracle now provides OS X users with Java SE 7 1.7.0_xx and above.
Lastly, when you install the Oracle Java SE 7 JDK, your browser plug-in will be changed to Java 7. I've probably already said this, but unless you need to use Java with your browser you should only enable it when you must visit a trusted site and only while you are there. If, for any reason, you need to revert to the Java SE 6 Apple plug-in, then you will have to go through the procedures shown in the document Java for OS X 2013-001: How to re-enable the Apple-provided Java SE 6 web applet plug-in and Web Start functionality

  • Problems downloading java in firefox

My new forms install 11.1.1.4 will not work in firefox 3.6.16 . It wants to download jre 6.12:
    http://java.sun.com/products/archive/j2se/6u12/index.html
However the download is immediately cancelled. If I tell it to resume it, it looks like it was downloaded but it is not there.
This is a problem I've had in recent times downloading anything from oracle and not just java There's something wrong with firefox vs oracle's web site. Sometimes you can use firefox sometimes you can't.
Anyway I got 6u24 installed but the test form does not recognize it because it is not 6.12. So this has got to be an faq how to
change the dependence on 6u12 to 6u24 (or better whatever the current version of java would be). I'm sorry to ask such a dumb
newbie question but if anyone knows how to change it I'd really appreciate it.
this does not work with firefox with 6u24, that's all I know. (the test form does work with chrome and with IE 8. BTW I found that if
you have this problem downloading any java with firefox, it is easier to download it with chrome. I see that chrome is very cognizant of
jre versions and there's a lot of confirming things on sun's website. So you can download and install java via chrome if the other avenues
are not working. (I'm getting a real java headache now. I think I'll work on something else :-)

Oh a simple fix. You merely have to find the formsweb.cfg file which in 11.1.1.4 is something like:
    c:\Oracle\Middleware\user_projects\domains\forms\config\fmwconfig\servers\WLS_FORMS\applications\formsapp_11.1.1\config\formsweb.cfg
change these 3 items to as follows:
    jpi_classid=clsid:CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0024-ABCDEFFEDCBA
    jpi_codebase=/forms/java/jre-6u24-windows-i586.exe#Version=1,6,0,24
    jpi_mimetype=application/x-java-applet;jpi-version=1.6.0_24
you could also change the download so they are not downloading the wrong thing:
    jpi_download_page=https://cds.sun.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/WFS/CDS-CDS_Developer-Site/en_US/-/USD/ViewProductDetail-Start?ProductRef=jre-6u24-oth-JPR@CDS-CDS_Developer
    I probably missed a few.
(But does this mean that every time there is another version of java I'm going to have to change this file? Actually I though mozilla was
going to run the latest version of java if you specified one that was earlier. There's just no telling what that program is going to do.

What you want to read up about is JAX-WS, which is the webservice API bundled by default with your JDK (Java 6 and up). You'll find the wsimport tool in the bin directory of your JDK. I recommend you explore that directory and read up about all the executables you can find there, to be more prepared in the future. Know the tools you work with and all that. Most tools have a manual on this website:
