JRE 1.4.x hangs under W2K (DirectX?, Nvidia?, ???)

Whenever I try to run a Java app that has a graphical component, it hangs if I use a 1.4.x JRE, although it will run with 1.3.x (assuming, of course,
the app supports 1.3). This will soon become critical because my company is about to make the move from 1.3 to 1.4 in our production environment, so
I will need to be able to develop with 1.4 as my default.
I have seen a fair amount of traffic regarding similar problems relating to Nvidia graphics adaptors and DirectX, but none of the solutions suggested
will work for me. I am at the point of wanting to wipe out my drive and start anew, but I have little confidence that this drastic approach will
yield positive results.
My system is a Dell Latitude C840 with an Nvidia GeForce4 440 Go video adaptor, running W2K SP4, with a 1.8GHz CPU and 512 Mb RAM.
I have tried using the command-line switches:
    -Dsun.java2d.d3d=false
    -Dsun.java2d.ddoffscreen=false
    -Dsun.java2d.noddraw=true
I have tried completely disabling DirectDraw and Direct3D from the Display tab of dxdiag.exe.
I have upgraded to the latest version of DirectX (9.0b) and updated my video driver to the latest version (6.13.0010.42.58).
I have tried with numerous versions of the 1.4 JRE, from 1.4.0 to 1.4.2_04.
I do not run PCAnywhere.
I have not put any of the Java executables on my PATH.
In case it helps, here are the last few lines of the verbose output from attempting to run a small UML modelling app (Umlet) with 1.4:
    [Loaded javax.swing.JButton$AccessibleJButton from c:\development\j2sdk1.4.2_04\jre\lib\rt.jar]
    [Loaded javax.swing.Box from c:\development\j2sdk1.4.2_04\jre\lib\rt.jar]

    [Loaded sun.awt.AWTAutoShutdown$1 from c:\development\j2sdk1.4.2_04\jre\lib\rt.jar]
and here are the last few lines from trying to run a different UML modelling app (ArgoUML) with 1.4:
    [Loaded org.argouml.uml.ui.UMLTreeCellRenderer]
    [Loaded org.argouml.ui.DisplayTextTreeRun]
    [Loaded org.argouml.ui.DnDNavigatorTree$DnDTreeSelectionListener]

    [Loaded sun.awt.windows.WDesktopProperties from c:\development\j2sdk1.4.2_04\jre\lib\rt.jar]
    [Loaded sun.java2d.SunGraphicsEnvironment$2 from c:\development\j2sdk1.4.2_04\jre\lib\rt.jar]
It looks like sun.java2d.SunGraphicsEnvironment$2 has something to do with this, but that's very un-scientific. Also, the output is the same,
regardless of whether the -D flags above are used.
What could be critical in solving this is that, with ArgoUML (and nothing else I've tried) I get a similar problem with the 1.3 JRE. Again, here are
the last few lines of verbose output, using the -D flags above and with DirectDraw and Direct3D entirely disabled:
    [Loaded org.argouml.uml.ui.UMLTreeCellRenderer]
    [Loaded org.argouml.ui.DisplayTextTreeRun]
    [Loaded org.argouml.ui.DnDNavigatorTree$DnDTreeSelectionListener]

  • Oracle Com Suit under W2k or WNT 4.0

    Any suggestions about using Microsoft Windows 2000 or Windows NT 4.0 as a plataform for Oracle 8i Server and client?
    Some sites said that Oracle8i relase 2 is aproved for working under W2k. It's this true.

    Hi Farbod,
    I think there may be some confusion as the names are quite similar.
    Oracle Identity Management is a Suite of products for managing identities over the enterprise. This includes products such as the OID server. It also includes Oracle Identity Manager (OIM) which is a product. The latest version of the "Suite" is 10.1.4.x (Not exactly sure of version)
    Oracle Identity Manager is an identity and access provisioning engine. It was formerly known as Xellerate.
    The key is: Oracle Identity Manager is not the same as Oracle Identity Management. Oracle Identity Management suite of products includes Oracle Identity Manager.
    Clear as mud? :)

  • Installer setup hangs under Windows 8.1

    I've got a Officejet 4500 which could be installed without problems under XP, Win 7 and Win 8.0. Now I bought a brandnew Windows 8 notebook (Acer Aspire) and updated to 8.1. Then I started the appropriate setup executable OJ_AIO_4500_G510g-m_Full_Win_WW_140_408.exe. At first try the program window opened and hung with the initial step (system checking). At later tries the file has been extracted but no window opened. In Task Manager I found the process "HP installer setup" using 30% CPU, but I was forced to kill this process finally.
    The printer itself is now installed (I'm able to see the printer and to use it) but the Solution Center and the Scan/Fax capabilities are not available. I even used with the installation assistent. I stopped the firewall, no success. The idea to stop all Window services found in this forum seemed somewhat heavy to me. So what might be the reason that the Window doesn't open and the programs hangs?
    best regards

    Hi all, I am sorry to hear that you are all having problems installing the Version 13 and 14 HP software for your printers.
    We (HP) are very interested in helping fixing this problem and getting the full install of the printer software.
    Can you all help us out by answering a few questions about how you got to your version of Windows 8.1 and how the printer is installed.
    What version of Windows 8.1 are you using?
    How did you arrive at theis version of Windows 8.1 (Upgrade [CD or Windows Store] or new install or Clean Install)?
    What Printer were you trying to install?
    What version of the HP Software were you trying to install and how did you get it? (Web download or CD)?
    How is the PC connected to your Printer (Network or USB)?
    Also I would like anyone who is willing to Submit Installation Logs to us to Private Message me and I will contact you about how to collect them and where to send them after collection.

  • JTable rendering problem in JRE 1.6.0.10 under Linux

    I've encountered a bizarre issue using JTable. I've got a 3x10 JTable of Strings, values in which I change from within the program (no user input). After every update the value in the first column gets superimposed on the top of the previous one, so they are both visible, but totally unreadable (they interlace).
    I'm using Linux, and it only happens under jre 1.6.0.10. When I switch to 1.5.0.16 it works fine. I also noticed, that if I set the value to null in the first column and then set it to the new value it works fine. However, if I do it simply like that:
    table.setValueAt(null, 1, 0);
    table.setValueAt(newValue, 1, 0);it doesn't work. I need to re-set it to null on one user's click (it triggers the update) and only change it on the following click. Am I reporting a bug here, or is it a known issue with some proper solution?
    Thanks

    There are some crazy things, I can't explain...
    1) Here is my [sample project|http://vlkv.storm-soft.kiev.ua/_mywiki/images/6/6f/JavaApplication1.tar.gz]. I've created it with NetBeans 6.5 and jdk 1.6.0_11.
    2) there are directories dist_windows, dist_linux with jars, created under Windows and Linux (same version JDK everywhere). You may compare both JavaApplication1.jar files with some diff tool (such as WinMerge) and you can see that these jars are slightly different. WHY?
    3) Run my sample
    java -jar JavaApplication1.jarpress the button and scroll up and down JTable. Under Windows everything is ok. But under Linux I have the subj bug with BOTH dist_windows/JavaApplication1.jar and dist_linux/JavaApplication1.jar !!!
    4) Start NetBeans 6.5 and open the project. Run the project from inside NetBeans on Linux. Then I see that my java program runs perfectly, without any bugs!!!
    This command
    ps fu -C javaproduces this output:
    vlkv 8778 1.0 2.8 217084 22408 ? Sl 14:01 0:00 \_ /usr/java/jdk1.6.0_11/bin/java -classpath /home/vlkv/NetBeansProjects/JavaApplication1/build/classes:/home/vlkv/NetBeansProjects/JavaApplication1/src NewJFrame
    But if I run NewJFrame without NetBeans like this (copy/paste command):
    /usr/java/jdk1.6.0_11/bin/java -classpath /home/vlkv/NetBeansProjects/JavaApplication1/build/classes:/home/vlkv/NetBeansProjects/JavaApplication1/src NewJFrame
    This bug returns!!! WHY UNDER NETBEANS IT'S OKAY?
    Where are the java experts to help us, please?
    PS: I've found a topic about this problem, unfortunately not answered, here .

    First I thought you had several jre's installed and windows used the wrong one when you type java ...
    Now I think it has to be someting wrong in your code.
    Can you try someting that should work?
    Compile and run the following code:
    javac testPanel.java
    java testPanel
    import javax.swing.*;
    import java.awt.*;
    public class testPanel extends Thread{
         public static void main(String[] args) {
              try{
                   // get out of the static context
                   new testPanel().start();
                   new testPanel().start();
                   new testPanel().start();
              }catch(Exception e){
                   e.printStackTrace();
         public void run(){
              // Create a container with a flow layout, which arranges its children
              // horizontally
              Panel panel = new Panel();
              // A container can also be created with a specific layout
              panel = new Panel(new FlowLayout(FlowLayout.RIGHT));
              // Add several buttons to the container
              panel.add(new Button("A"));
              panel.add(new Button("B"));
              panel.add(new Button("C"));
              // Create frame with a text area in the center
              Frame frame = new Frame();
              Component comp = new TextArea();
              frame.add(comp, BorderLayout.CENTER);
              // Add the container to the bottom of the frame
              frame.add(panel, BorderLayout.SOUTH);
              // Show the frame
              int width = 300;
              int height = 300;
              frame.setSize(width, height);
              frame.setVisible(true);

  • Tomcat 5 service won't start under w2k

    Has anyone else had trouble getting the Tomcat 5 service to start under Windows 2000 or Windows XP? I have tried installing the service using the installer .exe and also manually by downloading the zip file and using the service.bat file in the bin directory. I can install the service, but when I attempt to start it I receive the following message:
    Could not start the Apache Tomcat service on Local Computer.
    Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.
    I have set the JAVA_HOME and CATALINA_HOME environment variables properly. I can start and stop Tomcat just fine by using startup.bat and shutdown.bat. If I can start Tomcat by using startup.bat, what is stopping me from starting it as a service? I must be missing some configuration setting or something...
    I am having the same problem on 3 different computers, 2 w2k machines and 1 XP Pro machine. I have tried both Tomcat 5.0.18 and 5.0.19, same result on both.
    Any help would be appreciated!

    We have an application that runs fine under some browser clients with 64MB and Pentium 2 processor and hangs sometimes on the same machine. there is no error message generated. Forms are migrated to 9i forms from charcter mode and the database is 9i and the app server is 9iAS.
    Any info is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Srinivas

    Srinivas,
    What do you do to recover from this? If you can work with the application after restaring teh Browser, then definitively its a memory issue on the client. Forms Forms9i I would recommend 128 MB, especially because its a pure Web environment. The Java Virtual machine (Browser native or Jinitiator) requires approx. 90 MB to work performant.

  • Final Cut Studio 2 installation hangs under Snow Leopard

    I've since seen this on two machines and have filed a bug with Apple, but wanted to post to give people a heads up.
    When attempting a new installation of Final Cut Studio 2 on a MacBook Pro running Mac OS X 10.6, the install hung with "about a minute remaining."
    Examination of the running processes using "top" showed one thread spinning in user space using 100% of the CPU:
    <pre>/Volumes/Final Cut Studio/Installer/Packages/QuickTimeMPEG2Pro.pkg/Contents/Resources/ConfigureMim eTypes -rescan -verbose</pre>
    Running the same thread by hand succeeded immediately, so manually killing the spinning process seemed to have no ill effects and allowed the installation to proceed as expected.
    Just to be safe I manuallly ran
    <pre>/Volumes/Final Cut Studio/Installer/Packages/QuickTimeMPEG2Pro.pkg/Contents/Resources/ConfigureMim eTypes -rescan -verbose</pre>
    again after disc 1 was finished installing but (obviously) while disc 1 was still in the drive.

    Hello,
    I fortunately came across this discussion. I want to install FCS2 on my iMac which is now running under Snow Leopard and I also got stuck at "about a minute" remaining time.
    But it seems that the answer to solve this is give in an answer William has given. The only thing is, I don't get it what to do.
    I typed in the word Top in Terminal I saw that it is indeed "hanging" on ConfigureMimeTypes. Through "show contents" I got to the ConfigureMimeTypes file (at least I think that is what I should do). But then...?
    Another thought was, that I had to install the QuickTimeMpeg2Pro.Pkg. So I have tried that also. But then the same happens, it got stuck at "the remaining one minute issue".
    Can someone please tell me what to do?
    Please consider the fact that I'm not a very technical person and that english is not my native language.
    Thanks a lot.
    Kind regards,
    Richard

  • JRE 1.5.0_02 Hang on Windows XP

    Ok heres the story.
    Fresh install of windows xp professional with service pack 2. Run windows update, everything gets updated. Attempt to install Java VM, installed using jre-1_5_0_02-windows-i586-p.exe from www.java.com, also tried downloading from java.sun.com. Installation goes fine, until its finishing setup, hangs when the progress bar gets to 99%. a process called javaw.exe, one of the runtime files i presume, is using 0% cpu time, but has hung. Won't even go away if i kill the process, just doesn't do anything. Setup hangs due to this process being hanged, so have to reboot PC.
    My question, whats wrong here? BTW i have tried redownloading and reinstalling windows about 10 times so far. It happens EVERY TIME. I have also tried installing JRE 1.4.2_07 and using that to UPDATE the JRE. Same thing happens.

  • If external HD is connected applications hang under 10.9

    I have a G-Technology mirrored RAID 'G-Safe' external hard drive(s) - it's connected FireWire > FireWire to Thunderbolt adapter to my late 2012 27" iMac. It has operated without fault for a year and a half and also on another Mac.
    After extenive detective work I have narrowed an issue down to it being connected under 10.9 Mavericks.
    Since updating to 10.9 the drive still appears to work fine, however in any application when I go to load or save a file (and the Finder browser appears to pick file/save location) that application hangs and I have to force quit.
    The issue dissappears if I switch the G-Safe off.
    G-Technology say the issue is definetly with the OS not the drive.
    I know there are many post here regarding other issues with external HDs and Mavericks so thought I'd post this with hope a solution can be found.

    Dusty,
    You have pretty well narrowed down the possibilities...HD ribbon cable or logic board. All I can suggest is a very close examination of the entire ribbon cable, looking for breaks/burns in the traces and any abnormalities with both the male and female connectors. A recent poster had similar issues with an HD that would not mount (I can't recall all the details) and he thought the ribbon cable was good, but finally replaced it and solved the issue. Other than replacing it as the next test, I would guess paying for a diagnosis is the only option.
    Even though the HD is not present, do you have the Pismo's Hardware Test CD to run?

  • JNDI Connections Hang Under Load.  Is this a bug ??

    Hi
    We are using Oracle application server and the Oracle Directory Server. I have a simple servlet making JNDI calls to fetch an attribute, under load JNDI calls are hanging creating a large back log of threads that won't go away till the application server crashes. We are using the Sun Hotspot VM 1.3 on Solaris.
    I noticed on this forum that several other people have had this problem. Is this jndi limitation or bug ? Is there a known fix for the problem ? It looks like under load even though directory server is up and running alright, serveral JNDI threads hang waiting on a monitor.
    thanks in advance
    Raghu ..

    Hi Raghu,
    I'm interested in this issue. I wanted to know a few things
    1. Are you using a pool of servlet instances or a single instance for all requests.
    2.In your servlet are you directly calling the jndi lookup, if so can u pl.provide a snap shot code of that.
    3.What is the load, at which your application getting failed.
    4.Have you implemented any thread safe mechanisms like implementing SingleThreadModel, or using synchronized service method(which actually should not be done)....
    let me know the above details,,
    Thanks
