[KDE 4.2] Glitches in plasma

Anyone else notice glitches in the panel and all other Plasma widgets?
(Yes, I use Nvidia drivers, but all seemed to work fine before I installed Gnome )

i stll have that issue too. but until i updated to 4.2 yesterday, i also used to get wierd lines, like left over window borders or something going around my screen from time to time until i moved the mouse over them, only when i had gtk apps open. that one seems to be gone now, so i can deal with teh systray thing a little longer until its resolved with said update

  • Huge Number of Deps when Upgrading KDE packages from 4.14 to 14.12

    Hi,
I know the KDE upgrade issue is "flavor of the day" at the moment and I have read other threads on it; but so far have not found info which applies to my situation.
Note: I only use a FEW KDE apps like Krusader, Yakuake, Konsole, Kcalc and do NOT use KDE the Desktop Environment (and have no desire to do so.)  In fact, I do not use any DE's, only Openbox and i3WM as Window Managers, preferring a minimalistic approach, IOW, "less is more".
Since a day or two (since the KDE 4.14 to 14.12 came out), I am facing the following when trying to do a full system upgrade:

I have looked at almost all of the packages listed above and I currently only have a few of those installed. I can recognize the obvious ones I use (Krusader, Konsole, Gwenview and a few others) and their current deps.  When I do a pacman -Qs on each of the above packages/deps, most of them are NOT currently installed.
Trying to keep my system light, with no unnecessary packages, I fail to see why I would need packages such as kcrash, kbookmarks, kconfigwidgets, kemoticons, knotifications, kwallet (I definitely do NOT use kwallet).
When I look at the Net Upgrade Size of +172.52 MiB, again, I fail to see WHY I would need to load my system up with all of these packages--unless absolutely necessary.  But why would running the SAME apps as before, just upgrading them, require an extra 172+ MiB?  That does NOT seem right at all.  Granted, some of these MiB's are allocated to the other packages at end of list such as mesa, etc.; but most of the 172+ MiB's are most likely allocated to the KDE-related packages.
    1) Short-term
I have tried to Ignore the packages in pacman.conf by adding "kde kdegraphics kdebase kdenetwork kf5 plasma-next" to the IgnoreGroup and "yakuake oxygen-icons kdebase-lib kdebase-runtime" to the IgnorePkg but that is not enough since there are some packages which do not belong to any group so I would need to hunt them down one by one, etc.  And this does not seem to be the right approach, in any event.
    2) Long-term
I do want to upgrade the applications which I DO use, such as Krusader, Konsole, etc.; so it would seem I need to resolve this issue.
For further info, if I change the replies on the choices pacman offers on upgrading, this is what I get (which is probably normal):
    % pacman -Syu
    :: Synchronizing package databases...
    core is up to date
    extra is up to date

error: failed to prepare transaction (conflicting dependencies)
    :: konsolepart4 and kdebase-konsole are in conflict (kdebase-konsole<4.14.3-4)
So, what am I missing?  Just a few brain cells, i.e. the apps I have (in their updated versions) actually DO need all of the deps listed?  (This really makes no sense to me.)
Or is there a problem with the required dependencies?
    Thanks for any helpful feedback.

Well, If you are correct (and you probably are), with all due respect to KDE users/developers, IMHO this just confirms the trend towards "bloat".....
Again, I see no reason whatsoever to have to install kwallet (for example) when I'm just not using it, etc.
This just makes me want to uninstall those apps altogether or, probably better, just stop at the versions I currently have and prevent them from upgrading, as a temporary solution.
I might be able to switch to other smaller/lighter apps, over time--which will probably have less features, though, but can't always have your cake and eat it too, I suppose.
What is the best way for me to prevent this upgrade of all kde-related apps from 4.14 to higher versions?
I mentioned in my original post which groups and packages I tried adding to pacman.conf IgnoreGroup and IgnorePkg but I am obviously missing something.
Any suggestions as to how to properly stop from upgrading?
This is where I am right now, for pacman.conf
    IgnorePkg = netcfg cups libcups compton-conf-git caps opera yakuake oxygen-icons kdebase-lib kdebase-runtime kdebase-konsole kdegraphics-gwenview kdebase-katepart kdelibs kdepimlibs libkdcraw libkipi libkomparediff2
    IgnoreGroup = kde kdegraphics kdebase kdenetwork kf5 kf5-aids plasma-next

  • Can't change icon's theme on my kde 11.3 panel

Hi folks. I set AG-Plasma Icon for my panel but apper icon, the digital clock and the little button that shows hidden icons are stucked on the previous theme... This pic should explain quite well the problem. I've already empty /var/tmp/kdecache-myname/ but still doesn't work.. and I haven't anymore ideas..
and... Is it possible showing awoken icons on the kde panel instead of AG-plasma ones? If yes, how?

Yes. The theme changes that way but not the icons. I have a theme installed with gnome-art-ng and I also changed theme your way but when trying to do that with an icon-theme doesn't change anything. How can I do it in a way that creates a log or some kind of output?
I have tried with 4 or 5 different iconthemes. No difference.

  • KDE 5 default

When kde 5 components will replace plasma and apps (4.x version)? it will be natural (I mean pacman -Syu) or all the time that will be different packages? will kde 14.12 apps land in Arch official repo?

In Arch? We have 3 groups: plasma-next, kf5 and kf5-aids. If you want to install new DE (Plasma 5) you have to type:
    # pacman -S plasma-next
It should install new DE and unistall some parts of KDE4 (because they cannot coexist now)
BTW: There isn't (and will not be) such DE like KDE 5

As arojas said https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 1#p1485631 they should be in official repo soon.
But you must to know, that almost all packages in KDE Applications 14.12 are bugfixes for KDE 4.14.3 apps. Only few are building against of KF5. See: https://www.kde.org/announcements/annou … 4.12.0.php and https://dot.kde.org/2014/12/17/kde-appl … orks-ports As Mario Fux said: " We expect the porting of applications to Qt 5 and Frameworks 5 to happen over the next year or two."

  • KDE 4.4.5 crashes (kwin?) at random points

    Hi there
I have a very annoying problem. When I login to KDE from KDM, i can browse arround for about 30 seconds, and suddently KDE crashes and I'm thrown back to the KDM prompt. It's always crashing no matter which programs I'm using, but it seems that it crashes more frequently when I'm using a web browser, eg. firefox with the opensuse kde integration patch. I've tried to rename .kde4, .kde and .mozilla folders in ~/, That action delays the crash, but it still happens.
I haven't had this problem before i issued a big system upgrade yesterday, where it seemed the whole KDE desktop, linux kernel, xorg + drivers got upgraded.
    So right now i have the following configuration (which may cause some problems, I don't know);
    local/xorg-server 1.8.1.902-1 (xorg)
    X.Org X servers
    local/xorg-server-utils 7.5-4 (xorg)
    X.Org utilities required by xorg-server
    local/xf86-video-ati 6.13.0-1 (xorg-video-drivers)
    X.org ati video driver
    local/xf86-input-evdev 2.4.0-1 (xorg-input-drivers)
    X.org evdev input driver
    local/kdelibs 4.4.5-1
    KDE Core Libraries
    local/kdebase-plasma 4.4.5-1 (kde kdebase)
Display the contents of folders (User´s home folder as default)
    local/gtk-qt-engine-svn 5-1
Plugin that allows GTK applications to use Qt4/KDE4 widget styles. SVN Version
My graphics card: 02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV790 [Radeon HD 4800 Series]
I've checked my .xsession-errors when it crashes, but i do not understand that log file at all. However, i have pasted it here: http://pastebin.com/bSvmmWpG
Then I found out, that disabling desktop effects in kwinrc solves the problem, but I don't think it's very funny to live without desktop effects
I hope some of you guys can help me (and others, if they should have the same problem).
    Thanks in advice

I've tried that now, and i doesn't solves the problem. Thankyou for the answer anyway.
I don't know if the problem is reproduceable, but it happens when i'm doing one of the following:
    - Having desktop effects disabled and enabling them through system settings
    - Having desktop effects enabled and writing in the adress bar in firefox with opensuse patch causing the menu to drop down
    - Just browsing arround, having chromium and konqueror open
When running KDE in failsafe mode (or just having desktop effects disabled) everything seems to run fine including firefox with the opensuse patch.
So.. it seems having something to do with those desktop-effects, which is in "open-gl" mode. Maybe it's only a graphics card/driver specific issue? Are there other ati users with a recent system who're facing the same problem. Or maybe Nvidia or Intel users?

Does anyone know what the problem could be?

Hmm, could be the plasma configurations have gone corrupt.  This be the first thing that I'd try.  For future reference I've built a plasma backup/restore script because this can happen from time to time:

  • [Solved] Can't find a way to run network manager in kde

Struggling a little to get wi-fi set up on an arch machine running kde
I've installed plasma-applet-networkmanagement but I can't get it to run
There isn't any launcher for the applet on the menu anywhere but I have been able to find a .deskop file for it at:  /usr/share/kde4/services/plasma-applet-networkmanagement.desktop
When I try to run it though I get a little dialog box showing the following error
    The desktop entry of type
    Service
    is unknown
I've viewed the .desktop file in kwrite and these are the entries which seem relevant to running it
    Type=Service
    X-KDE-ServiceTypes=Plasma/Applet
    Icon=networkmanager
    X-KDE-PluginInfo-EnabledByDefault=true
    X-Plasma-NotificationArea=true
The last entry seems to be telling it to place the network manager applet in the tray if I'm understanding it correctly, but this doesn't happen
Anyone able to tell me how to get the kde network manager working?

If you add a widget to the panel, or if you add a widget to the desktop -- in the ribbon that lets you select widgets, you should have one called "Network Management"
If you do, drag it to where you want the control.
If you don't, well... Let's see what happens first

  • Need some help with ati drivers and i think xorg

i installed ati-dri and xorg and can boot up kde (sort of) because when kde starts it glitches and its semi-different each time but the main point is i think i have to downgrade xorg or mabye i dont have correct drivers for my graphics card (ati radeon HD 4650).

Edit: im going to do a full install of kde and hope that works. my lspi | grep VGA does indeed show the correct video card and the only other problem i can think of would be when ive tried to install certain catalyst-utils and other catalyst related packages im getting a pacman cant install missing dependencies catalyst=10.11 so i went searching for a catalyst=10.11 but it was never that exact name and nothing seemed to work.
major edit: i got xorg working and can probably handle it from here.

  • Beautiful tiling

I have a pretty much of a problem. I'm a Linux user as it was said I can choose from various approaches and choose the one made exactly for me or just change something a little to get the perfect matching with my needs. I felt like that's true for about five years of using only GNU/Linux... but now I'm an adult man who need more of a workspace, yet I have something just as a child and I want my workspace to be an eye-candy.
You know, I tried to change the approach of main desktop environments to better suits my needs. I was using Gnome with Compiz for a long time as it was nice to adjust all the key combinations and leave the mouse just for the WWW usage; now I'm using KDE with Krusader instead of Dolphin but that's just for now. You know, it's just not enough! I want my perfect tiling manager as my work depends on working with a lot of different files, I want my window manager to help me with it, not to just irritate me while I manually prepared three desktops with all the six open files and now I need to close two of them and open another one; tiling seems great as I was looking at Wmii usage via Youtube.
But, hey, so why don't I just switch? Because I'm used to pretty things like windows moving around smoothly, not just jumping from place to place with the speed of the light and overall look of i386; and I like it when I have my favorite theme set and the transparency in on for inactive windows the way I can see my great wallpaper during these half-on-a-minute breaks in thinking. Generally: I want beautiful tiling manager. Is there any way to make such a workspace of my dreams?

Sorry for that but my world collapsed and why I am looking for alternative approaches it that I was always Gnome 2 user and now it will be depreciated so I looked at Xfce but found it not very cutting edge as Gnome/KDE are; KDE itself in the other hand is so different and all these Qt apps I don't know and all these GTK apps which are looking shitty after any visual setting in kWin... generally, what I want now is some old school romance with great engine so I'm going to try KDE without kWin, nor with Plasma Desktop (ohh, it was pain in the ass) and some good tiling manager would be great as I'm no longer looking for ways I know.
So, generally: what tiling WM would be a desktop manager in the same time OR what WM/DM set would you recommend for usage with KDE applications? Pure-tiling one, just like bohoomil said.
About Awesome 3: I know Python pretty well but don't feel like I would like to work after work just to work better...
Seeing as how your concern seems entirely cosmetic, the answer is: anything you like.  You're still gonna need to use the KDE Settings manager, QtConfig, and another program of your choice (lxappearance, et al), and a little creativity to set your widgets, decorations, etc. the way you like.  There are wiki pages on how to configure integrated visual styles among both Qt and GTK+ apps.  And it goes without saying that regardless of the WM you choose, you'll need to install the KDE libraries to use KDE programs.  Look around, play around--only you can sort out what works for you.  Here's KDE's Dolphin file manager next to GIMP, as an example:
I use this same setup in both KDE and OpenBox.  Play around enough, do some reading, and you'll find what you're looking for.  It took me months to get to the point where I could get every detail just how I wanted it in KDE; I'm still learning about OpenBox, since it's different from what I'm used to.

  • [solved] KDE4 hangs at ksplash

I just installed Arch on my laptop and everything seems to work as it should exept for KDE which seems to hang at startup every time. When a splash screen is set it runs the splash but no desktop wil start. When I use openbox everything works fine also my KDE apps.
I installed the kdebase packages so I should have all requirements.
When looking for a logfile I noticed there is no .kde directory in my user's home. When I copy a backup of my home on Aptosid it still gives me the same result.
The only comparable topics I found on this have to do with libpng and libjpg but these posts are all from 2004, 2007 or 2010.
    Does anyone have an idea?
    UPDATE:
I managed to get it working by installing kde artwork meta and the plasma widgets meta packages

There are many posts with the same issue, is this the official solution for minimal KDE install?

  • KDE and Openbox - Plasma glitches

Today I installed Openbox and configured KDE so that it uses it as its default window manager.
Of course, it would be too easy if it just worked. This change kind of broke Plasma - the desktop does not display the content of ~/Desktop/ anymore, and scrolling bars that seem to not scroll anything appeared at the top and the right edge of the screen.
Funny thing is that if I start KWin as the default, and then tell Openbox to replace it, everything works fine.
Any idea how to fix this issue?

To view your ~/Desktop/ contect on your KDE desktop, right click on it and select.. last option, window will pop up. Select "Location" tab and specify a folder which you want to show on your Desktop.
    Hope it helps.

  • KDE Plasma 5 crashing at seemingly random times

I've been having this problem for a while now and so far I've been unsuccessful in trying to troubleshoot it myself.  My computer will be working along fine, and then all of a sudden will freeze.  No mouse pointer movement, no keyboard input, trying to switch to a different X session fails (ctrl+alt+F2, etc.), even the numlock key will stop functioning.  This forces me to manually reset the computer each time.
Checking the logs (journalctl --since today) shows this alarm at the time of every crash:
    Mar 04 11:32:00 mycomp.domain.local kdeinit5[848]: Created alarm 16777226
Obviously the date/time and PID are different, but it's always kdeinit5 and alarm 16777226.
Google has turned up nothing useful for me that I can see and there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to when the crashes occur; sometimes I'm running VMs through VirtualBox and doing a million things at once and other times I'm not doing much except browsing the web and reading the news.
I'm speculating that it might be an issue with some of the different KDE packages conflicting somehow, but I have no idea which ones it might be or if that's even remotely the case.

The issue still persists.  I have completely wiped and re-installed everything twice now, the second time including the /home partition the second time.
Any help, suggestions or advice would be *really* helpful.
Here's some more info about my system if that helps:

  • [SOLVED] KDE Plasma doesn't load correctly sometimes

    Hi!
I have strange problem, if i remember correctly since the last qt upgrade. Sometimes the plasma desktop just doesnt load fully, my desktop doesn't react on hotkeys, panels doesn't work on any click, superkaramba doesn't load. The only thing that works is the KDE menu, ant if I run an application from there, plasma starts to finish loading (superkaramba appeares, hotkeys start to work, so it finishes the initialization). It doesn't happen at every startup. This wasn't a too big problem, I thought it would be corrected with a new upgrade, but today my kde desktop froze. My computer didn't react to anything, sometimes  was able to move the cursor, but after a click, this only function also disappeared. I restarted my computer with the reset button, and I also had some strange things on my monitor at boot, and kdm didn't load correctly, I had only two input areas, with unrecognizable characters. So reset again, and I started windows (i have a dual-boot system), and it also had some stranges stripes at startup, and didn't load correctly. So I turned my computer off, and back again (so not with the reset button), and that time nothing strange happened at boot time, KDE started correctly, but I got a freeze again after some time.
Has anybody had similar problems? Does anybody have an idea what could cause this? I'm not sure it's a software related problem, but it started like one.

It looks like it has to do something with the Nvidia driver, cause I have:
    (EE) NVIDIA(0): Error recovery failed.
    (EE) NVIDIA(0): *** Aborting ***
    lines in kdm.log

  • How to use different configurations for KDE Plasma?

I typically use my laptop in two ways: single monitor and dual monitor. I like to have in the two cases two different sets of widgets and plasmoids, so I wonder if it's possible to have multiple configurations for Plasma and load the desired one when needed. I searched around for a solutio but didn't find anything.
Right now, I'm using a rather awkward method: I have two sets of Plasma configuration files for single and dual monitor setup (ie., plasma-desktop-appletsrc-single and plasma-desktop-appletsrc-dual) and two startx scripts which, before starting KDE, copy the single or dual monitor configuration on the standard Plasma config file (cp $HOME/.kde4/share/config/plasma-desktop-appletsrc-dual $HOME/.kde4/share/config/plasma-desktop-appletsrc). I'm sure there are better ways to have a dynamical Plasma configuration, since my zero-order solution has many drawbacks, for example I loose the modifications I make on my desktop (since Plasma saves them on plasma-desktop-appletsrc which is overwritten at next startup).
Can anyone please help me? Thanks.

For such a purpose KDE Plasma provides Activities. Here you can find more about that:
    http://userbase.kde.org/Plasma#Activities
There is also a nice plasmoid for easy Activity managing:

    I hope, this helps you...
