KDE 4 breaks konqueror in KDE 3

i installed KDE 3.5.10 and then KDE 4
as soon as i installed KDE 4 most buttons on the toolbar in konqueror of KDE 3 disappeared. the commands work from the menu and the toolbar is configured to display the buttons but they are missing
please help me get them back (without removing KDE 3 or 4)

kde 4 was meant to replace kde 3; I would suggest just installing kde 4 from the repos.

  • QT 3.3.6-4 breaks parts of KDE [SOLVED]

As the title implies, upgrading to qt 3.3.6-4 breaks parts of KDE. Most notably, any non-stock widgets. I cannot get the extra ones to work, nor can I build them anymore (different compilers). I'd really like to upgrade to KDE 3.5.5 right now, but I don't seem to have the option (Arch 64). At the moment I can't go back to the old one, because 95% of all upgrades weren't being allowed by Pacman (file is corrupt error), so I cleared the cache. So, if KDE 3.5.5 isn't available to me, I need someone to point me to the CVS repository so I can regress.

Thanks to Pierre, I was able to regress back to an earlier QT.

kde 4 was meant to replace kde 3; I would suggest just installing kde 4 from the repos.

  • [KDE] segfault for non KDE apps? (new)

    Hi,
a few days ago, I noticed that non KDE apps (Firefox, Claws Mail, etc.) did not start on my KDE desktop (KDE 4.4, not KDE-mod).
What happens is that if I click on one of them on the menu, the app starts (I see the mouse cursor being active) but in the end nothing happens. By executing the corresponding command in a terminal followed by sudo, it would work. However, when entering the same command without sudo it gives me a "segmentation fault". KDE apps (dolphin, konqueror) works perfectly.
What would that mean and how can I fix it?
    thanks,
    Charles.

Dude, you need an iTunes Store account to purchase apps. You don't need to download a US version of iTunes to upgrade to 1.1.3. Without an iTunes Store Account, your ipod touch is as good as crippled since you cannot download and install apps onto your ipod Touch while others can. I do have one suggestion for Apple: to enable an iTunes Apps (not music) Account that is made payable by credit cards or gift cards (but not restricted to countries that itunes store operates in). This way, Apple can also sell apps to many more countries.

You could also use the kde3 packages from kdemod. There were some conflicts with kde4 initially but I think it should work now.

  • To make KDE apps look like KDE apps

    Hi everybody!
I am very new to Arch so please don't be hard on me. :-)
I have some problem with looks of apps. I use Gnome but I also have Xfce and KDE installed. My KDE apps look like this:
As you can see - buttons of Gnome on KDE app. I want to make all apps look like the DE they belong. How do I do that?

I think that that it would be very hard to use Oxygen effects outside KDE (not kwin: oxygen style has it's own effects).
When you turn off those effects in KDE apps lok exactlly the same as on your image.
With effects they look like this:
Maybe someone has managed to „tweak" something.... hope so.

  • Discussion on kde 4.4 on kde-unstable

As kde 4.4 is coming, I wanted to try kde 4.4 from kde-unstable ( I used ProgDan's repo before).
Everything is working, except nepomuk. There is no "Desktop search" menu in System Settings !
Which packages should I reinstall to check if something is missing ?
Oh, I reinstall the whole kde 4.4, and there it is. But Nepomuk/Strigi won't start...!

  • Arch gets *really* bleeding-edge: releases KDE 4.2 before KDE does!

I know distro devs get KDE a full week or so earlier to begin testing with their distro, etc., and the essentially unchanged RC was here before, but KDE 4.2 stable is in Arch's main repos now - _before_ it's available on the KDE web site! I mean, I knew Arch was bleeding-edge, but come on!
    http://www.archlinux.org/news/431/
(And, yes, the 4.2 ChangeLog link is broken, I suspect there will be such a page within 24hrs)
www.kde.org still says KDE 4.2 is to be released tomorrow, and I can't download the 4.2.0 source from the location specified in the KDE 4.2 PKGBUILDs. None of the KDE mirrors have it.

    Do you use testing?
The heimdal version in testing does break kio_http, but by creating symlinks you can get around that.
Do a ldd /opt/kde/libs/kde3/kio_http.so | grep not and see which libraries are missing. Search for these libraries in /usr/lib (e.g. libgssapi.so) and create a symlink from e.g. libgssapi.so.2 to libgssapi.so.1 . This is only a dirty workaround, but it works until the related kde packages are rebuilt against the new heimdal version.
Edit: I experienced the same with kdemod.

  • Kde 3.4.0 - kde 3.3.x (observations)

if you have questions or bugs or i-don-t-know-what regarding the pkgs of kde 3.4.0, please use the thread http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?t=10566 for your reports. this thread is used for posting observations regarding features and speed of kde 3.4.0
after now running kde 3.4.0 for a certain time i want to write down some observations:
    - kDE runs faster (this is subjective, but on my old machine running 266mhz it reacts much faster and daily usage is more confortable (without having to wait on windows to come up))
    - it uses less memory (managed to start kde with memusage of less than 140mb total - on 3.3.2 the same session takes 230mb)
    - icons look nicer (same crystal as 3.3.2) but they come up slower (redrawing a window makes icons disappear for short and be redrawn) - i guess that now icons are SVG and the svg-engine is the bottle-neck
    - klipper has preview of images (copy an image in gimp and click the klipper: you will _see_ what you have copied!) - really cool feature!

Lots of cool features, but I have noticed it is very crashy...
It doesn't seem to like to be stable..  It does run far quicker (but then again, this is my first Arch KDE install...was using enlightenment...and probably still will...) but it runs far faster than ANY other distro I've installed with KDE.  So kudos to Arch, or KDE, whoever got it right finally.
It also starts quite a deal quicker
Control panel is great, less cluttered.  My Home desktop icon dissapeared after my desktop crashed (i turned on line up icons and it wo't work.. had to turn it off).  Oh well, I'll just make another.
Few bugs here and there, but Nothing working sniffing over.  After all, after I get it set up, i don't need to mess with it anyway.
Mousover effects seemed cool, although I turned them off (too windows XPish)
Some problems with konqueror so far, but I think it's just a sign of the release more than anything else.

  • Libreoffice in KDE does not use KDE file dialogs

    Hello,
I have libreoffice-4.2.4-1 from [extra] installed, together with libreoffice-kde4 4.2.4-1. But it still shows the GTK file open/save dialog instead of the KDE one.
I tried starting libreoffice with the following command that I got from the wiki:
    SAL_USE_VCLPLUGIN=kde4 lowriter
But that does not change anything. I guess, the autodetection of libreoffice works well, and it is already using the QT style even without the SAL_USE_VCLPLUGIN variable set. It is just not using the right file dialogs. There is a setting libreoffice options (Tools--> Options --> General --> Use Libreoffice dialogs), but it is unchecked.
I checked the forums about this, but the only thing I could find were some threads about a bug with Libreoffice crashing on start. I experienced that bug too, and it seems to be gone now. Unfortunately, I find the missing KDE file dialogs even more annoying.

For me OOO_FORCE_DESKTOP=kde4 does not solve the problem either.
About arojas' link: Do I understand this correctly, that they disabled the KDE file dialog because it is possible that the application crashes in certain conditions due to some QT component? And they hardcoded that, so you cannot reactivate it using some option?

  • Downgrade kde 4.4 to kde 4.3

I've just upgraded my system. Now I'm running kde 4.4. Everything is slower. After the system upgrade about 90 % of my ram (1G) is used constantly. Before the upgrade it rarely was more then 30 %.  So I want to get rid of kde 4.4 and downgrade is to kde 4.3.
After reading the 'Downgrading packages' wiki it seemed pretty simple:
You may be able to downgrade the package trivially by visiting /var/cache/pacman/pkg  on your system and seeing if the older version of the package is stored there. (If you have not run pacman -Scc recently, it should be there). If the package is there, you can install that version using pacman -U pkgname-olderpkgver.pkg.tar.gz.
One problem: there is not just one kde 4.4 package to downgrade. Do I have to downgrade all the different kde packages one by one? Or is there a more elegant way?
Last edited by lnx (2010-02-20 18:57:24)

You could find an outdated mirror and upgrade from there
    or
    goto /var/cache/pacman/pkg
an do pacman -U kde*4.3*.pkg.tar.gz ( but this will not be a guarantee that everything will be running fine )
Did you try to run kde 4.4 sc with a clean .kde4 folder ?
maybe even backup your entire home dir and start with an empty home ?

  • Kde 4 apps in kde 3.5

Most distros now offer kde 3.5 with apps like ark, kate, kpdf, ktorreent replaced with apps from kde4. I am using kdemod and checked there site but you have to remove kde3 in order to use it. There are PKGBUILDS in AUR. How do I use these to replace my kde3 apps?

You don't need to remove kdemod3 to get kdemod4 apps, kde3.5 is in /opt/kde and kde4 is in /opt/kdemod. I'm running both environments on my computer as two different users.
What site were you looking for instructions on? The instructions on the main site are for replacing Arch's KDE3.5 with KDEmod3.5. In the forums there's instructions for getting KDE4, which also just tell you to get rid of other KDE4 things not KDE3.5

  • Mute KDE Apps in Non KDE Environment (xfce4, gnome, ...)

    Hi guys!
I did not find anything useful about the following problem:
I use xfce4 and think it is great (no problem so far). In addition to that krusader is my top browser.
Ok I know that the slickness of xfce is lost if I use kde apps but here is my problem: Everytime I delete a file/dir my sound level goes up to 100% and the speakers (or the headphones) go *BLABLING*.
I know from here [1] and here [2] that this is due to KDE settings.
I don't want to install the whole KDE environment, start it up and untick the System Notifications from there. I want to install that one package that controls them.
On ubuntu the package is called systemsettings [3] but I did not find anything similar in the arch repository.
    Here is my uname: 3.18.6-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Sat Feb 7 08:44:05 CET 2015 x86_64 GNU/Linux

lib32-libpulse 6.0-1 (not quite sure why I have a 32bit package here but I don't think that causes any trouble)
    krusader 2.4.0beta3-5
Thanks for any help and sorry if I did not found the same question here on this forum.

    Hi all!
I am the mantainer of this package in aur: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=22391
It has been allways very useful, since you can have a folder full of unsorted images, and you can just select all of them, right click on them, and choose the option "Rename to exif date" and they will be renamed to their exact date and time they were taken.
This is the ony thing i am really missing since i switched to kde(mod): I take lots of pictures with my digital camera and mobile phone, but, since then, i didnt find the way for making this nautilus pkugin work under kde.......... Is there any way to make nautilus' plugins, like this, work under kde's file manager? (Dolphin?
I would really appreciate some help with this, see if we can sort something out...
    Thanks!!!!

you can install nautilus on kdemod, it will work fine and use it when you need this function. Or you can try digikam (available at your repo of choice), a kde photo manager. I'm not sure it has this feature, but it can handle exif-tags.
