Ken Burns on Pics in a big hurry

Greetings, I'm under a serious time crunch and don't have the time needed to put the ken burns effect on my pics in FCE HD. I tried putting them on in iMovie and importing into FCE, and that has worked very well. However, I can't put transitions between the pics as I can in iMovie. Can anyone offer assistance? Thanks, Scott

FCE transitions need Media Handles.

  • How to get Ken Burns effect to zoom out so the whole pic is visible

I want to start or end with the full pic in view - just as the FIT command does.
Then I want Ken Burns to Zoom/pan to make it interesting.
But I can't figure out how to re-size the frame beyond the 4:3 (or whatever is restricting it) ratio.
Tried dragging the frame edges with CTRL, ALT, SHIFT, and COMMAND. Nothing seems to release the constraint.
    Thanks in advance.

I want to start or end with the full pic in view - just as the FIT command does.
If by "Fit" you mean the image exactly matches the display area, then you would have to "pre-crop" your scan to one of the available aspect ratios either before or after making your scan. If by "Fit" you mean "letterbox" or "pillar" views, then as Appleman said, you would have to either use the mentioned automator action or almost any graphic application. I prefer the manual approach so I can add a "text" area, frame, texture the background and/or image, and/or create other special effects.
But, how do I zoom the view out past the edges of the photo? If I press the FIT button in KB effect, it does it. But I loose the ability to zoom/pan... Unless there is some trick to getting KB effect to start or end with a FITted picture?
There isn't. iMovie '08 automatically scales the content to make the smallest dimension "fit within" the display area and, therefore, does not allow the "over-zoom" effect of "fitting" the larger dimension within the display area. You can however do this in iMovie HD. So if you want the "built-in" capability, this is a case where you should be using the the older application -- otherwise you will have to letterbox/pillar the content to get iMovie '08 to "Fit" your image as you wish.

  • Export a 'Ken Burns' Pic to FCP

Moving pictures in FCP ***** as anyone who has FCP knows. Can I export an iMovie 'Ken Burns' pic to FCP?

    Hello awp,
Moving pictures in FCP *** as anyone who has FCP knows
New to me - just created a squence with multiple pictures and clips, all moving, keyframing, time-remapping, etc. Great results ... customer satisfied.
    But to answer your question:
Exporting your clip (KB pic) via quicktime should do the trick. Export as full quality DV.

  • Avoiding Ken Burns effect when I download pics in imovie

How can I avoid Ken Burns effect when I download pics in imovie so I don't have to change them individually?

    Thank you.
When I try to do some of my transitions like "push" for instance, it lets me choose a speed and direction, but the UPDATE and ADD keys aren't highlighted. In other words, I don't really have that transition as an option. Any reason why?ll

hi i was just editing a slideshow im making and when i added the ken burns effect all my photos turned red and stayed that way i was wondering how to get rid of this

I had this problem with red tinted photographs and found it was only those pictures saved in bitmap. After converting the pictures to jpeg things seemed to work just fine.

  • Help please with two big Ken Burns fx problems!

I'm importing stills in .psd into iMovie. When I put them into the timeline and apply the Ken Burns effect, the following happens: The image turns red the second I select "show photo settings"; then when I apply the KBfx, the clip literally disappears and I am left with a black image that doesn't play at all--even though the now black clip in the timeline says "0.05:00". Now it seems that if I resave the .psd file into a .jpg file, it doesn't turn red--but it still disappears when the KB fx is applied. Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

    Hi Stany
Not knowing: Going from.psd to .jpg would have been my first suggestion.
    That the photos disapears ??
    a. What version of Mac OS + iMovie + QuickTime (important) do You use ?
    Mac OS X.4.8 + iM 6.0.3 + QT 7.1.3 ??
    b. I would delete iMovie pref file then run - Repair Permissions and see if
    this helps.
Most common origin to all kinds of problems is (my opinion): Low free space on the
    internal hard disk.
25 Gb free after movie import - fine
    10 Gb trouble beginns
5 Gb - slow (extrem) performances if any at all + troubles

  • IMovie 6, DVDSP 4, and Ken Burns

    Hi,
There seems to be an issue with DVDSP drop zones and Ken Burns effects rendered in iMovie 6 (or any other pan/zoom software like Photo to Movie). Dropping a pan/zoom-rendered movie into a menu drop zone looks horrid after building the project, then viewing the VIDEO_TS folder with DVD player. Same result after burning DVD.
The drop zone video, as it pans and zooms, undulates in some areas while zooming, to the point of distraction. I cannot see this effect if the file is imported into an iDVD6 drop zone or opened in Quicktime 7. I have tried deinterlacing, blah, blah to no avail.
***? I paid $80 for iLife '06 and $500 for DVDSP and I get better results with iLife? This doesn't make any sense. Any advice appreciated.

If you getting a moire (intereference) effect this is usually associated with things like checked shirts or lots of very small detail in the footage. It probably looks fine in iMovie as it is larger so you don't see the effect but when you make it smaller in the drop zone all the small detail "bunches" together and because then the effective resolution is smaller it has less pixels to play with. Also are the photos you are using for your Kens Burns montage scanned from magazines... this would also give a moire effect as the scanner has scanned the dots that the picture is made up of.
I had a similar problem recently with a scene access menu created in After Effects. The scene in question had a great big venetian blind in the background. Looked fine as full sized footage but when reduced to a scene selection size it was "ringing" like crazy and looked horrible. The only way to get rid of it was to blur the footage slightly - as it was appearing small you didn't notice.
If your pics are from magazines etc. then you can use your scanners descreening methods to largely eliminate any dot...
    Hope this helps

  • No question, but a suggestion RE: Ken Burns

    Hey all,
I couldn't find an appropriate place to leave "suggestions" for the Apple software gurus who are working on the next version of Final Cut Pro, so i thought I'd air it out here.
It seems that many people utilize still photo montages in FCP projects, with pans and zooms ala Ken Burns. I myself have used them many times in many different genres of video projects (longform documentary, wedding/birthday videos, etc.) I'm curious why FCP does not include a more intuitive method for doing this, other than Motion keyframes, while lower-grade products like iMovie have the feature built in.
What frustrates me the most is the supposed "control" we get with Motion keyframes; yet we also forfeit some control. This is most evident when zooming in/out of a still image. When you start zoomed in (i.e. put an inpoint Motion keyframe at 100% scale) and then zoom out, no matter how slow (outpoint keyframe at 50% scale), the image will always "accelerate" toward the outpoint. Even when using the Bezier curve handlers to ease in/out of the endpoints, it will always seem to "hurry" toward the zoomed out image.
I know the reasons for this are mathematical: when the image is larger in the frame, parameters become magnified and more coarse, thus a 10% move while zoomed out is much faster than a 10% move zoomed in. Still, it seems unlike Apple to disregard the natural, intuitive, visual, human approach to this tool: our eyes should arrive at both inpoint and outpoint gently, rather than like screeching our brakes at a red light.
I watch quite a bit of documentary television, and I can always spot when the production is using Final Cut Pro to zoom in/out of photos. The rates of acceleration, and the patterns created by the final render, are instantly recognizable for those who have been stared at FCP screens for enough hours.
And while I recognize that there are plug-ins available to make zooms/pans more smooth, I am just curious why Apple did not take the time to incorporate this seemingly simple concept into their flagship video editing software.
Anyone have any thoughts about this? Feel free to post or e-mail me.

I use both FCP and After Effects for moves on photos, and I will have to agree that the acceleration is an issue. After Effects has "intelligent algorithms" to deal with this visual phenomenon...to slow down the zoom as it gets further away from the image. Avid has a plugin called PAN & ZOOM that does the same thing...used to have to use a third party app called MOVING PICTURE. That plugin is available for FCP as well.
As for the ease in/ease out options...Iately I find that I rarely want the picture moves to start from a standstill and end on one. I want a constant move. However, I do occasionally want the picture to come to rest and sit for a moment from time to time. And FCP does allow for this, you just have to plan for it.
But After Effects does a better job...and as I said, the speed of the zoom could be dealt with better. But post that at the link Pat provided.

  • Large slideshow, Ken Burns, allow black, etc. failure.

    Hi all,
I'm trying to produce a large slideshow for a team year end celebration. It's about 1000 images and 30 minutes. I tried Aperture, but the processing time was taking forever (some posted days for a show shorter than mine). iMovie seems to be okay, but the I can't seem to figure out how to apply a generic Ken Burns, Allow Black to all the images. Ironically, Aperture looked great, but can't process, iMovie can process (I've a lot of history with traditional videos), but seemingly can't get the stills correct. . . .Any suggestions?
FWIW, I've a really old legacy system. Mac Pro 1,1. OS 10.7.5, still have iMovie and iDVD.
    Thanks for the help!

I'm pretty sure, you do not 'edit' a thousands pics, set 1.5.sec each, add a generic transition, perhaps some 'motivational' music - done.
You can export the slideshow from within iPhoto as a 'mov', for further refinement (discs, sticks, mp4, whatever....)

just did it for my son's team - 2TB of video (1 season=1y, 6 cams, 22 games, 70min each) , shrunk to an 8min celebration
tons of slowmo, grading, ... stuff
speaking of music: this years selection: 'X Ambassadors/Welcome to the Jungle' .. the kids recognize it from the 'Before The Game/Beats' commercial... done in FCPX, not iMovie, for sure.
.. I started with a single photocam and 'slideshows' eight years ago too ....

  • Jaggies in Ken Burns effect

My Photos with Ken Burns effect usually have jaggies to one degree or another. I had same problem with windows programs (Roxio EMC 8, Adobe Premier and Studio Media by Pinnacle). I just bought an iMac because all of those programs would crash too often, and their Pan and Zoom effects produced jaggies. Apple has such a good reputation for video that I assumed their programs would not have the same problems. The good news is that the iMac has not crashed at all. The bad news is that the pan and zoom produces jaggies in complex pictures (flower gardens) or in pictures with a lot of lines (sail boats). I have read the boards here (thanks Karl !!) and I have tried many of the remedies (render in iDvd not iMovie, import with effect on, etc.,) but the results are still very very disappointing. it is almost misleading to say that you can add motion to a picture when the quality suffers so much on so many pictures.
But this isnt a rant - just a question. What do I need to produce a quality pan and zoom effect on a photo if cost is not a big issue? Is there an upgrade for Idvd or iMovie? Would Final Cut Express or Pro produce a better product? Would more memory help (I have 512 mb)? What do the pros use? I am willing to throw dollars to solve this problem but I dont know where to throw them.

Hi Mardot - welcome to Apple, and to this forum!
It might be worth looking at either Still Life, or Photo to Movie before trying the expensive FC route. Both of these applications create very good pan and zoom effects that can be later integrated into an imovie project.
    http://www.grantedsw.com/still-life/
    http://www.lqgraphics.com/phototomovie.php
You probably should up-grade your imovie. imovie 6 is part of the iLife 6 suite of applications, which includes iDVD as well. Just be aware that iMovie 6, or indeed FC uses 'non-destructive' editing which needs much more storage space.
It would be a good idea also to list your computer model, RAM etc in your profile as this will then appear at the bottom of your posts. It can be helpful when diagnosing problems.

  • Jerky Ken Burns when burning to DVD

Hi all - tried finding an answer to this but not much luck - anyway the problem is I made a simple movie in imovie 08 using only photos, music and Ken Burns effect on some pics. the presentation runs smooth as silk on my iMac 24" - so then I try burning the movie to DVD using iDVD. I slot the DVD in a player and it looks very average. The picture resolution is low - should I export to a higher level of resolution? Then the Ken Burns effect is jerky - not massively but still not smooth. Please help I really want to be able to export/burn movies that look great and run smooth but can't find out how to do this,
    thanks in advance
    Rob

I have the same problem. Ken Burns looks good on the computer but real jerky on the DVD using iMovie 8.

  • Why is the Ken Burns effect not responding to individual slide settings?

First try creating a slide show in iPhoto'11 (I've used previous versions on older Macs w no probs).  Ken Burns eff for individual slide is no longer responding for ex when I try to set a time for slide or any other option for that matter.  It seemed to work OK when I first tried it but then the KB screen went 'dead' for individual settings.  Any ideas on what to do?

Yeah I misread part of your post but am happy to have helped in some way.

Strange. That does sound like some sort of bug, though. I wonder how the poster figured that little fix out?

  • Ken Burns Effect - A four-letter word?

So I guess you have to uncheck the Ken Burns effect in two places everytime you do a slide show. One in the settings gear menu. Very annoying. Is there any way to setup a default slideshow setting that has no music, no dissolves or other fancy transitions, no Ken Burns and a set time frame other than the default 3 secs. I've got hundreds of albums of pictures and I'd like to be able to do a quick manual slideshow of any of them in a hurry. It seems like there are way too many steps involved just to turn everything off.

If you don't create a slideshow, and simply use the Play button for albums, I think the settings stick. So once you save settings with what you like, they should stay for the albums. I think the slideshow button in the toolbar, however, has fixed settings and KB remains on.

  • "show photo settings" and ken burns glitch? please help :(

    hi, i'm having a problem,
my software is the latest version, so is quicktime, all my updates are up to date, i'm not using an external hardrive.
i was creating a music video composed of all still pictures and everything was going fine untill today.
the "show photo settings" display box has a glitch or something.
the slide bars for the ken burns effect have disappeared.
a checkmark on the imovie display is now visible and the apply and reverse buttons have disappeared.
i can no longer exit out the photo settings window the same way as before.
when pictures are added to the timeline they are much too long.
i'm unable to keep the ken burns affect box checked, it keeps unchecking itself and it wont allow me to change any photo settings on certain pictures and on the ones it will allow me to when i press "apply" or the checkmark it stalls and wont render the file (the red line doesn't fill and just stays there)
when changing the length or display time of the picture it will delete itself and replace it with the next picture in line.
can anyone help me? i've spent a massive amount of time on this video and would like to finish it. i dont know what the problem is. maybe i clicked something i shouldn't have?
    thanks in advance

i'm estimating around _1000 pictures_ ... they are all being stored on the desktop ...
    WOW!
... how long does your poor Mac need for booting??
The >40y old Xerox metaphor of a Desktop/Folders/trashbin had the concept of simulating reallife.. would you store ~1000 pics on your desk while glueing them into an album (ever glued 1k pics into an album?) ...?
I assume, your System is 'cluttered'. totally cluttered.
try to clean up ... in Finder, clean your File 'System'... create folders (many folders...), use the pre-installed structure your Mac came with (how about storing pictures in... ehm, Pictures?), why not using iLife as intended (import into iM from iPhoto), why not using the integrated 'File Management' of iPhoto to create albums, to give your mass of pics some structure, finally consider to use approbiate apps (if you try to create a stopmotion-like movie, QTpro or Boinx' istopmotion are better tools) ...
keep in mind, a Mac needs at last 10-15GB free on internal drive to act normal.
export as much as you can to external drives (firewire connected, 'MacOsExtended' formatted), don't forget to give these harddrives structure too .. you know how to create Folders in Finder?
after all is set and done, your desktop is clean, everything is in its place, use Disk Utility to check&repair... finally, reboot your Mac, give it a chance to 'recreate' itself in better shape
... and there's still a high chance, that the fragile file management of the 20$ consumer app iMovie is still overwhelmed by >1000 stills in one single project...

  • Moire effect (shimmering) in Ken Burns effect

My mum (mom to you north americans!) uses iMovie HD to create complex slideshows of photos taken with her Fuji digital still camera. She wants music, Ken Burns animation, nice transitions (variable, depending on the photo), captions and voice overs. She can do all of that with iMovie but she gets really severe moire interference patterns in any image with fine texture.
We use iLife '08 and the effect does not appear when she creates slide shows with the same photos in iPhoto. I hoped to create slideshows in iPhoto then export them as .dv files (PAL format) but the only decent format I can find is 640x480. I need dv which is 720x576. I'm sure earlier versions of iphoto could do this ...
I also tried iMovie '08 (what a backwards step that was!) but the moire effect was worse if anything.
I'm happy to show her how to export a quicktime file from iPhoto and then use iMovie HD to add music, captions, titles, voice overs etc. but how do I do it?
Is there a solution to the moire problem.
I have read mentions of "photo to movie" but we are on dial-up only so downloading apps is a big problem in the short term until I get home to my broadband.
    Please help!
    Steve

    G'day again Bengt,
I spent most of today working at this with no really satisfactory solution. I discovered how you were getting NTSC video out of iPhoto slideshows along the way. I tried scaling pictures to all sorts of sizes using multiples of 72 (ppi on screens), 720 (PAL DV res.) 50% increments on these, random sizes etc etc.
I discovered the Gaussian Blur method partially worked but reduced the sharpness of the images substantially. A very disappointing result compared the crisp, smooth animation in iPhoto itself.
I also played with FCE and produced much better results although some moire was still evident. I suspect some very slight G. Blurs would almost eliminate that but no point in pursuing it as Mum doesn't have FCE and it is way to complex for her to learn without lots of support and I'm only home for the holidays. I still have trouble with creating keypoints and animating images and video and I've been using it for two years ...
Thanks for your help but I have to say I'm deeply disappointed in Apple over this one. If they can output NTSC DV video they should be able to do it with PAL too - all the other iApps do.
When I get home to my broadband I'll try Photo to Movie and see if it would work better for Mum.
    Steve
