Keyboard Backlight Dies on Lowest Setting

My keyboard backlight acts funky. I like to keep the backlight on low settings since I think even half of maximum illumination is too bright. Many times when it is on the lowest settings it does one of two things.
1. It will turn off after a brief period of time although I have set the keyboard backlight to never idle out. (could this be a power/hardware issue?)
2. Or it will turn itself from 1 to 3 bars. Often when it does this I'll notice that tapping the keyboard backlight brightness increase once will cause a jump from 0 bars to 3.
Is anyone else noticing this problem? What setting do you like your keyboard backlight at? I've heard many forums talking about the ambient light sensors issues related to the keyboard backlight but never this specific issue. Maybe I have a faulty keyboard.
Resetting the PRAM seems to help a little and I've also deleted the preference file bezelservices.plist which seemed to help with the lowest setting consistency. The problem however, is back.

It does seem to auto-adjust, possibly as part of the energy saver settings.
You can manually override the OS control of the keyboard backlight with LabTick:

Hope this helps...

  • Keyboard backlight abnormally dim when set on max setting

    Hi all,
I have been scanning through the forum looking for a solution, but have yet to find one that works:
    Here is the situation:
Macbook pro early 2011, lastest update of lion, My keyboard backlight is abnormally dim when set on the max setting. When comparing my current illumination to a properly working keyboard, which i had just a few days ago, the current brightness would be about a level two - three on the illumination scale.
The associated SMC functions appear to be working properly, besides the keyboard illumination.
Oddly: The light momentarily starting working yesterday and went back to full brightness for about an hour, then regressed backed to the problem of being abnormally dim.
What I have done to troubleshoot:
    Resetted SMC several times
several trials of going to a dark room
clicking and unclicking of the "automatic illumination"
    ticklight does not work
Is this a problem with Lion? as there are several characteristically similar senarios involving the keyboard backlight and lion?
Or is this a hardware issue?
    Does anyone have any solutions?
Has anyone talked to Apple support about this issue?
    Thanks,

I now have this problem too - early 2011 Macbook Pro and latest Lion update (10.7.4).
Even with the brightness turned up full, I can hardly see the keys in low light.
I've also noticed that the battery LEDs at the side are abnormally dim too - but go to full brightness when the lid is closed.
It looks like a software thing to me.
Did you ever get an answer to this (other than take it back to the Apple Store)?

  • HP Pavilion 15-p159na - Where is the keyboard backlight setting to switch this on?

Can someone please tell me where to locate the keyboard backlight setting for the Pavilion 15-p159na laptop.  I want to turn the backlights on but cannot locate this setting anywhere.  Thanks.

There isn't a setting. On the keyboard of a notebook that has this feature it is on the F5 key.  It is the lit key in the following image from the keyboard of my current HP Product loan. It is the enable\disable backlight key.

  • Locking the keyboard backlight setting

    Hi All,
Just got a new t430s to replace a dell e6420.
I'm wondering if there is any way to force the machine to remember the keyboard backlight setting.  It gets reset when the machine goes to sleep or the display turns off, very annoying!
I know I can press fn+space to get it back but it seems like it really should remember it or at lest be able to take a default setting, that's what my dell did.
I've poked around the bios settings and power options and can't find anything.
    Thanks.

None that I'm aware of. There are a couple of other threads on this topic in which people have expressed a need for this or similar feature, e.g. Possibility to activate keyboard backlight automatically

  • Why does my keyboard lighting stay on its lowest setting?

why does my keyboard lighting stay on its lowest setting?

Negative, that was the first thing I tried. I've also reset the SMC, nothing.
I can see a little bit of light ubder the keys (white light, not blue) when I dim my screen to the lowest setting, but when I press F6 to strenghten the light, it does not get any brighter.

  • What is the default screen brightness setting and keyboard backlight brightness default setting, and how to you go back to default?

What is the default screen brightness setting and keyboard backlight default setting? I just got a new Macbook Air and fiddled a lot with it, and now just want to know how to set the brightness levels back to default. Thanks everyone!

    Hey sberman,
I maxed out the screen brightness before I clicked on "restore defaults" in system preferences> energy saver (which has to do with battery, not exactly screen brightness) to see if the screen went back to a "normal" brightness level, but it didn't. I don't think it restored the brightness to default..

  • Keyboard backlight Dell

    Hi,
I bought a Dell xps 14 developer edtion laptop. I installed Arch with KDE; everything works well, but I have few questions:
    1) I would like to set keyboard backlight off by default, but I couldn't find the corresponding udev rule. Does anyone know it?
    2) When I use keyboard button to light/dim screen backlight, the KDE luminosity bar doesn't appear although the screen luminosity is correctly tuned. Why?
    3) I wrote an udev rule (like in the arch wiki "power saving" item) setting lowest screen luminosity. All works well except when kde splash screen starts: suddenly the screen lights very much, then, after I type the pwd, it dims to the correct luminosity (I also set kde powersave option). How can I fix this problem?
    Can you help me?
    Thank you

  • Keyboard backlight not working - settings missing on MacBook 2,1??

I have a macbook 2,1 that was given to me by a friend about 6 months ago. It is in perfect condition except some seperation around the edges. So, I took into the Apple store a couple of days ago and they replaced the entire 'inside' of the macbook; meaning screen surround, keyboard and surrounding 'faceplate'. (Excuse the incorrect terminology) I also mentioned to them that the keyboard didn't have any backlighting (at least I have never seen it) and the tech said would also be repaired as a result of the keyboard replacement.
ANYWAY, I am home and the keyboard backlight is still not working. I searched mac help and found the following:
To set keyboard backlighting for a portable computer:
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Keyboard & Mouse, and then click Keyboard.Open the Keyboard pane of Keyboard & Mouse preferences
To enable backlighting, select the “Illuminate keyboard in low light conditions” checkbox. If you want to automatically shut off the backlight when your computer is idle, drag the slider to indicate when to turn it off.
The only thing I saw was an option for bluetooth - n/a, keyboard shortcuts settings to change shortcuts..obviously and the keyboard setting which only gives me the choice to
    1. change the key repeat rate
    2. change the delay until repeat rate and 3. a box to check/uncheck if I want to use the f1, f2, etc as the standard function keys.
There is also a button at the bottom left corner which says 'modify keys' which I believe is n/a.
I should also probably mention, when searching help, it also said "The light sensors are located in your computer’s speaker grilles, so make sure the grilles are not covered when you use your computer in low light conditions" . I have no speaker grilles (that I can see) but my speakers work. and it says; "IF the keyboard on your computer can be backlighted, you can set it so the keys can be visible in lowlight conditions". I guess the keyword here being IF so maybe this mac isn't supported for that but I think that it is from what the person at the Apple store told me after looking up my serial number.
Just to add, I did search the forum and found close to the same problems but with different types of macs so I thought I would ask. I am still learning the ins and outs of using Mac so I hope I asked the right questions and I'm not over expanding on the question too much.
I am sure there is a simple explanation...maybe?! So if someone could enlighten me, I would be very grateful!!!!
    Thank you!!!!
    Sarah

  • Keyboard Backlight not responding at startup or after awakening.

The keyboard backlight on my MacBook Pro does not work upon startup or upon awakening. Even when I cover both of the speakers it fails to turn on. I have to press F10 and then it lights up but, it lights to the first bar. Not where I had it before it went to sleep. Is an body else having this problem?

Make sure the keyboard is set to automatically illuminate in the Keyboard & Mouse System Preference.

  • Macbook pro retina keyboard backlight always on

My new MacBook Pro Retina keyboard backlight always on under room light?

    ML problem ?
I saw those display set at retail is working under room light but running Lion not ML.
Is ML really have problem ?
Should I reverse to Lion ?

No need to revert back to Lion.
May be resetting SMC will help.

  • The keyboard backlight is on all the time. I can only adjust it by manual. What can I do? (I checked the illumination box)

The keyboard backlight is bright even under the sunshine.
Is this a problem? Need I to take the computer back to the apple store? (Macbook Pro 2011: Mac OS X, Version 10.6.7; 2.3 GHz Intel Core i4; 4GB 1333MHz DDR3)

Did you check the F5 and F6 keys to make sure your backlighting is not set to the max? I would set it at half and see if the auto backlighting is working. You can also check it by covering the iSight webcam and a few cm to the left which is where the baklighting sensor is. Give that a try.

  • Circle with diagonal line when trying to adjust keyboard backlight

I have ever since I bought my Early "11 MBP 15" been able to use keyboard backlight in any ambient light conditions, at full or no strenght. However as I tried to clean up something I spilled on the keyboard, a magic key combination rendered the function keys for keyboard backlight useless. Instead I get the circle with a diagonal dash through it. In preferences keyboard backlight is set to on... Please help!

Oh I get it... It's supposed to be off if enough ambient light is around. Guess that makes sense... Covering the light sensor next to the iSight camera dimmed the screen and keyboard light came on!

  • Toshiba Satellite S70-B - Keyboard backlight not working?

Hello, I purchased a brand new Toshiba Satellite S70-B laptop with Windows 8 on it. When I received it, I removed the harddrive and installed a SSD with Windows 7 on it. After getting help from Toshiba support, all the drivers and harware seem to work except the backlight keyboard? I spoken to several Toshiba support techs and finally came to the conclusion to send it in to change out the keyboard. Yet I fear if I send it in, they will remove my SSD and reinstall a hardrive with Windows 8 as their solution. Does anyone have other suggestions... ?? Any help is appreciated.

I am having problems with my keyboard backlight too. I spilled water on mine and had to totally take it apart, until then  I never had any problem with the shortcut key turning it on and off. I found this last night. Unfortunately. it didn't work for me Also became disappointed when I searched and searched for that magic timer on my desktop he spoke of. Let me know. 1) Shut down laptop
    2) Turn on and start tapping the F2 button until you get to the BIOS screen
    3) Scroll over to power management and change the setting for your backlit keyboard from off to on.
    4) Press F10 to save and continue to start up.
    5) Enjoy.
Believe it or not, I JUST fixed this issue on my own a665D laptop. I am still tweaking it though because after this, the shortcut keys don't allow you to turn the backlight off so I'm typing on a keyboard who's LED's wont go off as of yet. But this should help for now.--REVISION: I am done "tweaking it" as I have found the answer and it was glaring me in the face. Instead of just turning it to the ON position through BIOS, turn it to TIMER. You can set the amount of time you want it to stay on when ever you press a key and the FN+Z shortcut works when this is set up so you can turn the keyboard on, off, or to follow the timer right from your desktop. I hope this helped.

You are officially awesome. Worked perfectly; I never would have ventured into the BIOS without an exact guide like you gave (Would have blown up the laptop or something lol). But anyway, thanks so much,

  • Keyboard Backlight Settings have no effect vaio Control Center

I have a Sony laptop, model SVE14A35CXH, and my backlit keyboard does work, it's just that the settings in Vaio Control Center, under Keyboard Backlight, the settings for that have no effect on the actual keyboard backlight. I make the setting to never turn on, for both on battery and plugged in, the keyboard still comes on when a key is pressed. I change the setting to turn on in low light, turn off after 60 seconds, it always turns off after 15.  Any time I change the backlight settings, the actual keyboard backlight always turns on in low light conditions, and always turns off after 15 seconds if a key is not pressed. The settings have no effect on what the backlight does. Help would be appreciated.

    Hi Derp-Derpinson,
Are you using a retail version of Windows? You mentioned before that you did a complete fresh install of Windows 8. Please follow the troubleshooting guidelines below:
Power Cycle - remove the battery and all peripherals -> press and hold the power button for 5 seconds. This will drain the electricity of the unit. Check again the backlight.
    Reset BIOS.
Make sure that these drivers are installed or updated: (Sony® Firmware Extension Parser Device Driver, Sony® Shared Library, Hotkey Utilities). You may go to eSupport to download the drivers.
You may also reinstall Vaio Control Center.
    Hope these work.
    Regards,
    Vincent
