Keychain Access hangs on trying to reveal passwords

When I try to get a password stored in my login keychain, using Keychain Access, either by copying or revealing the password, Keychain Access hangs unrecoverably. I tried Keychain First Aid, which didn't find any problems. Strangely, Safari seems able to still pull passwords out of the keychain. Weird. Has anybody encountered this problem? Any solutions short of starting a whole new keychain?

Hi,
I had the same problem yesterday. Browsers could get the passwords for websites, but Transmit hung as soon as I selected a favorite and Keychain Access did the same (including no errors running First Aid) as soon as I tried to reveal any of my passwords. In my case I just needed to reboot and all was fine...

  • Keychain Access hangs after update to 10.7.2. Any help?

I recently updated to OSX 10.7.2 and can no longer open the Keychain Access app. It hangs on startup. A side effect of this is that I can no longer access my department's WPA Enterprise network as network preferences cannot access the certificates stored in the keychain.
    Please help!

    Hello,
We are finding the same solution seems to work for the time being with our systems at the University I work at.
However, it is not ideal because it stops the Keychain from checking whether or not a certificate has been expired or revoked. The two settings, OSCP and CRL are both methods to make sure a certificate is still valid and should be trusted by checking up the chain to the issuer. If the issuer is on the internet and you are stuck in a captive portal then how can you check? I think Lion is getting into a catch 22 here.
You can set these values in the command line using the following:
    To set the CRL settings:
defaults write com.apple.security.revocation CRLStyle -string OFF
    To set the OCSP settings:
defaults write com.apple.security.revocation OCSPStyle -string OFF
The next time my test machine beachballs while trying to launch Keychain access, I am going to try this as a quick workaround myself. We are seeing a continual stream of students coming into our HelpDesk with this problem and the fixes above only work for a short period of time. Then it all breaks again.
I have our network security people looking into allowing the certificate checks for our systems to go even from the captive portal.  I will report back any success or failure as a workaround for this method.
Having to set machines to not check for revokation of certificates seems like one more step closer to just throwing put the whole trusted certificate idea as a usable security method.

  • Asking for password for keychain access, but won't accept my password... What's up with this?

Restarted my MacBook just now and it's got a continuous stream of pop ups asking for password for keychain access, won't accept my password, won't go away (cancel), any suggestions.

    Hello Al323,
Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing with Keychain Access on your Mac.  I found a couple of articles I suggest for the issue you described.
Your keychain uses your the same password as your login password.  If it is not accepting that password, I recommend running the Keychain First Aid using the steps in this article:
Mac OS X 10.6: Solving problems with keychains
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH7296
If you are still repeatedly seeing a prompt to enter your Keychain Access password, you may need to reset your keychain.  This will create a new keychain so any saved passwords on the old keychain will not be available, and you will need to enter them when accessing sites for the first time again.  Follow the steps in the article below to create a new keychain:
OS X: Keychain Access asks for keychain "login" after changing login password

  • The wi-fi I'm connected to does not appear in the keychain access, so as to get the password back.. can you help me on this?

    thanks in advance.

When you entered the password to connect to the network, there was a checkbox to save it in the keychain. If you didn't check that box, it wasn't saved. If it was saved, it's in the System keychain and has the type "AirPort network password."

  • Mac KeyChain Access App Hangs when NOT connected to WiFi

    Hi,
I am facing a problem with Keychain Access hanging and wifi connection in OS X 10.9.1 (Mavericks).
I use a Time Capsule as a base station and 13" Macbook Air (2012). The base station is connected to the internet through a PPOE connection.
    Here are the details.
Since upgrading to OS X 10.9.1, my Mac automatically connects to preferred wifi network ONLY WHEN the wifi is available at start up or when the Mac wakes up from sleep, but not otherwise.
Before the upgrade, the Mac automatically connected to the preferred wifi network not just at start up, but whenever the wifi became available.
In other words, after the upgrade, if I boot up the Time Capsule base station and the Mac simultaneously, the Mac scans for the base station wifi network (this is configured as the top preferred wifi network) at start up, but since the base staion is still booting up, the Mac doesn't find the wifi.
But once the base station has booted up and wifi is available, the Mac no longer bothers to join it.
At this point, if I click on the Keychain Access application, IT HANGS (I see a rainbow-colored rotating disc/ball).  And it continues to hang UNLESS I do ONE of the following to get the Mac connected to the wifi.
    1. I manually select the preferred wifi network using the wifi icon at the top of the screen;  OR
    2. I put the Mac to sleep (by closing the cover) and then wake it up.  On wake up, it connects automatically to the preferred wifi network; OR
    3. I turn off the wifi (using the wifi icon on the top) and turn it back on, at which point, the Mac automatically connects to the preferred wifi network.
As soon as the Mac gets connected to the WiFi, the Keychain Access application STOPS hanging and open up normally.
I also noticed that Keychain Access DOESN'T HANG (even if the Mac is not connected to the wifi), if I do the following:
    1. Go to Network preferences;
    2. Uncheck "Ask to join new networks";
    3. Click on the "Advanced" button, select wifi tab, and remove all preferred wifi networks and uncheck "Remember networks this computer has joined".
I obviously want to set preferred wif networks, so the above workaround to avoid Keychain Access hanging is not acceptable.
I have tried everything possible including contacting Apple support, but so far the issue is still unresolved.
Appreciate any help you can provide.
    Prem

There was a hotfix for this put out just after V25.
Unfortunetly you have to rebuild your viewer and submit and update to Apple. From my experience they were very quick about approving the update because of the critical nature of the update even without putting in an expediated review request, but that was over a month ago.

  • Can't Get Mail Password From Keychain Access.

My neighbour wanted to be reminded of his Mail password.
So we opened Keychain Access and clicked on his internet password and then clicked the i at the bottom of the window.
A new window opened with "Attributes" at the top and we clicked on the "Show Password" box at the bottom.
A window then opened for his Keychain Password. It was different from mine. Mine simply has a Sancel and an OK button at the bottom.
His had 3 buttons - "Deny", "Allow Once" and "Allow Always". (I am not sure whether I have got those last two exactly right).
When he first got his G5 iMac he did not use a password in the initial setup of the computer and never has had one. So we left it blank (except for the flashing cursor) and pressed the Allow Always button.
It said the wrong password had been entered. We tried again several times using each of the Allow buttons but were refused each time.
As the computer has never had a login password what should we do?
I assume that his keychain access password window looks different from mine because he has an earlier version of Tiger than I do.
    Ian.

    Thanks Matt.
I can't try it now but I suspect it will work.
The big puzzle is why it said the wrong password had been entered when he has no password and we left the box empty.
Four years ago when I too had no password, simply leaving a password request box empty and clicking OK worked.
    Ian.

  • ICloud keychain access password

    Hi guys,
Safari is saving passwords both on my iphone and my mac – this iCloud Keychain does work. Cool.
Then design of the website is changing and whatnot and Safari stops entering password for me.
I go to the Keychain Access and trying to see the password.
Keychain Access is asking me for the password for "Local Items" ... hm... ok.
Local admin password does not work, my iCloud password does not work.. what password shall I use to see items stored in my iCloud keychain?
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

    Hey there keloin,
It sounds like you are wanting to see what Safari passwords your iCloud Keychain. You should be able to do this in the Safari preferences:
How do I view the passwords stored in my iCloud keychain?
Macs using OS X Mavericks v10.9 or later:
Choose Safari > Preferences, then click Passwords.
Select the website whose password you want to view.
Select the “Show passwords for selected websites” checkbox.
    Enter your system password.

  • Why won't the proxy settings be created in the keychain access?

    Hello,
I'm having an issue with an iMac that won't keep the proxy settings saved. My company has proxy settings active to use the internet and for some reason they will not stick. I noticed that the keychain access is not creating this internet password and I also noticed it's only happening for a certain user only. In the administrator profile, the keychain is working perfectly fine so I narrow it down to the profile issue. Any suggestions?
    Thanks,

Network settings apply to all users on the system. Administrator privileges are required to change them.

  • Login Keychain Access

I just moved my wifes PC information to my old Imac using Migration Assistance. All the data came over just fine, but the new account that was set up by MA could not be accessed as there was a password problem. (Seems to be common).  I just the permissions on all her data files in finder, and set up a new user , and then copies all her data into the new user account (I made it an admin accout). This seemed to work fine, I have email working, itunes set up, etc
however as far as key chains go, the key chain attached to her id is fine and in the Keychain Access Application I can see the passwords etc stored in
her account howerver the "login.keychain" associated with her account doesnt seem to have a password to let me access it.
When she logs in it asks for it and there is no password that will work, and I cannot access, delete nor do anything with it as I dont' have a password, but I never did get an opportunity to set one up. Other accounts are fine, this is the only one with this problem.
I've read countless posts on this, but I still don't get how I fix a login keychain problem. The user keychain is ok.
Quite frustrating, I'd really appreciate a pointer in how to fix this. On a related note, I also noticed that everytime she logs in, the mouse set up (ie the natural scrolling option) goes back to the default setting, I assumr that these are option recorded in the login keychain?
    Thanks,
    Tom

Did that as welll. The user key chain is fine, but sill won't let me do anything the the login keychain.
    Quite frustrating.

  • Trying to view WIFI password in Keychain Access and asking for administrator' name and password?

This is the first time this happen and I had never have this problem before when using Keychain Access.
I try using my current password but it doesn't accept.
I try using the Keychain First Aid and it didn't work either.
Note: I had change my login password a 2 weeks ago, but I try using the old password to and and didn't help either.

Any ideas what's happening here and how to fix this problem?

    It's normal.

  • Keychain Access to recover password: "Access to this item is restricted."

I need to recover my network password, which I saved in my keychain, but can't figure out how to get it using keychain access.  I've tried to get keychain access to reveal other passwords which I do know, but I can't get it to show them either.  Here's what I tried to do:
Opened Keychain Access, found the network name, and double clicked on it.  A window describes its attributes popped up, but the password field was blank.  Clicking on the "Show password" box brought a window saying "Access to this item is restricted."  I tried to retrieve other passwords in the keychain today using the same method with the same results.
I'm running Snow Lion, version 10.6.8.

OK, I played around with keychain access for a while, but finally hit on it.  For the benefit of others with the same problem, here's what worked:
There are two sections on the left sidebar, Keychains and Category.  I'd chosen "Passwords" in the Category section, and eventually, in poking just about everything in that window, I clicked on an arrow which expanded the Keychains section.  I kept playing until I clicked on System in the Keychains section.  That brought up all of my past networks.  I double-clicked on my current network's name and once again clicked on the "show password" box.  This time I was asked for my admin password, hit enter, and vois-la! there it was.
The only thing that had happened in the meantime was that I ran Keychain First Aid's verify and repair (found in Keychain Acces's File menu).  I have no idea whether this is what changed things, or if it was just expanding the Keychains section, but now I can view any of my passwords in the Paswords choice in the Category section.
Who knows if this will help anyone, but I'll go to some of the other recent threads and post a link to this thread in case it can.

  • System keychain items not revealing password

    Hello,
I cannot reveal/delete passwords in system keychain anymore. I installed Yosemite and I changed the username&homefolder for my admin account. When I try to access items, ticking on the Show Password box, it remains grayed out for a few seconds, then asking me for my admin username&password, and when I enter it the box is still not checked and it doesn't show anything.
I tried the Keychain First Aid, resetting login keychain, but it doesn't change anything.
    I appreciate your help!

Sorry you have not gotten a response for this problem. I found your post when searching for an answer to my problem, which turns out to be (it would appear) the same one you're experiencing.
Password works great for my login, "invalid" for my "system" keychain. I can unlock my "system," but it will not let me use the same password to view the network password that is stored in "system."
Keychain First Aid reports no problems.
I'd love to delete the whole mess- a previous problem has resulted in me having two "system" and two "login" keychains- I spent hours on the phone with AppleCare several years ago trying to clear that up, but I have too many passwords stored in here to delete them all.
I have the same number of items in both "system" keychains, and the same number in both "login" keychains. When I delete an item form one "login," both report having one less item. When I drag an item from another keychain to the "login" at the top of the list, it is the other one that is highlighted and accepts the item, but both then show the increased number of items.
I don't know if this is related to the problem, or if it is just another complication to it, or if it has absolutely nothing to do with it.
Hopefully someone has an answer that will make both Mr Badger and me happy.
    Thanks. Joel.
