KT4V (MS-6712) USB 2.0 Problems

I have installed Windows XP Professional and SP 2 but when I go on my Device manager it says I do not have any USB drives. They're definatly there, unless it's a figment of my imagination... I just can't get them to work. Can someone help me out here?
Thanks,
Andy

If you read the bios section of the manual that came with you board, it'll show which section of the bios to check your usb settings. If you don't have the manual as a hard copy brouse the cd for it as a pdf file, read it using Acrobat reader. Worse case, download it fro the MSI support page for your motherboard.

  • [VIA] [MS-6712] USB 2.0 problems !

In January, I went here about problems reinstalling USB subsystem drivers. After reinstalling Win2k, I ended up having the USB subsystem working. At that time, I had only the Veo Stingray Camera and a 1.1 USB key.
Recently, I came back to that box and plugged a 2.0 USB key this time. The key is recognized but the problem is the speed is a lot too much under USB 2.0 specs.
1- I checked again the key on another box and it delivers the 2.0 speed as promised. My very simple test is copying from the USB key a 70 Mb directory to the hard drive. About 2 secs on my reference box (for a theoretical maximum of about 1 something). On the MS-6712 it's a lot slower.
2- Even with the rear panel USB ports, I don't get close to good USB 2.0 speeds !
    What's happening ?

do you have Win2K updated to the latest Service Pack?
Definitely yes. The enhanced controller was shipped with the Service Pack 4.
    Quote
do you see the Enhanced host controller in Device Manager under USB devices?
    Yes, I do.
    Quote
try right-clicking and "Uninstall"-ing the Enhanced and Standard host controllers, then right-click and choose "Scan for hardware changes" to have Windows detect and reinstall the drivers
    I'll do that this afternoon.
I already uninstalled the enhanced drivers in safe mode, rebooted and got back the drivers.
I'll also try to  uninstall both standard and enhanced controllers next time.

  • KT4V (MSI-6712) USB Slowness

    Hi,
As u can already see from the subject i have the MSI-6712.  Im running Windows XP Pro with Service Pack 1.  I recently purchased the Archos Multimedia Hard Disk which has USB2.0 and firewire.  I knew i didnt install the patch, so i did install the patch (VIAEHCX1.INF) and the 4in1 patch.  I restarted my PC and it detected the hardware fine as the "JUKEBOX" but it took 4 minutes to transfer a 180MB file, i know this is wrong because i have transfered 500MB in 4 minutes on another PC using USB2.0.  In the Device Manager, the USB bit does have 'VIA USB 2.0 Enhanced Host COntroller' but it doesnt seem to be running USB2.0.  Can anyone help me,
    PM5K

I've had no error message about the device being used in a USB2.0 port but i have been able to open the Hard Disk destination, just has a slow transfer rate.  Im thinking that it could be the setup in the Device Manager, Do they seem right to you?

  • KT4V MS-6712 Modem Install Problem

    Hi everyone,
I've just got a KT4V(MS-6712) board and finally got it to work with the 2400XP and 2xPC700 256mb RAM.  (It woudn't take a 512mb stick).
My problem is I cannot install my v92 or v90 modem.  When I go through the usual procedure in the Hardware Wizard, I get an "Error occurred" message at the very end of the installation in the wizard.
I've tried the modems in another motherboard using the same procedure of installation and everything works fine. I've also installed a TV card in the PCI slot to see if there was a problem with the slots, but it installed ok.
Could some please guide me in the right direction?  I'm I missing somthing here, a BIOS setting or something?  Could it be a serial conflict?
    Thanks in advance, mrnickyp

Thank you to all who helped me through these strange issues. I found out what the issue was. These are the steps: (this is off another newsgroup)
This applies to any type of PCI card eg ethernet cards, modems, etc
etc. and XP and Windows 2000.
PROBLEM: After installing new card in a PCI slot, get "invalid data"
error message and the drivers refuse to install. The card is
correctly identified by the system and the drivers found are MS
certified. Not sure why this happens, but at a guess, this problem
seems to occur when installing XP or W2K and many PCI slots are still
unused. XP and W2K for some dumb reason then appear to "protect" these
unused PCI slots by making them "READ ONLY" in the registry.
SOLUTION: After mucking around for many hours trying to reset bios
settings for PCI cards, trying to re-install XP etc, finally came
accross the solution. Thanks to MarkS whoever he is for finding this.
STEP 1 - Start, Run... and type "regedt32" without the quotes to run
the Registry Editor. (Regedit wont work!)
    STEP 2 - Navigate to
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\ENUM\PCI
STEP 3 - you will see a number of keys of the form "VEN_xxxx", where
    xxxx are
strings like "1102&DEV_0004&SUBSYS_00011103&REV_04". Under each of
    these
folders will be another folder with a long numerical name. Open each
long numerical name folder and look in RHS window for the "DeviceDesc"
which matches the hardware you are trying to install.
STEP 4 - Once you have found the right one for your problem device,
navigate back up to the VENxxx level for that device, Right Click on
the "VEN_xxxx" for that device and select 'Permissions'. You should
notice that the permissions are set to READ ONLY. Then tick "Allow"
    for "Full Control".
STEP 5 - Close Regedit and then continue with the installation of your
device, ie go back to Control Panel, Add new hardware and preferable
use the wizard to try and detect the hardware again, or do it manually
    and use your driver disk.
STEP 6 - The PCI hardware should install now with no problems.
After downloading the latest drivers and installing that, the sound card worked successfully. Oh, and lynux, I believe you are correct, the pci input device was for the firewire.
This worked for me, now I just need to ensure that the USB bracket works. (any more ideas?)
-> addition: USB works. Tried it and everything was detected right away...
again... thanks so much for everyone's help.

  • KT4v MS-6712 problems

    Hello,
I have a KT4v MS-6712 mainboard and I have lately experienced som problems with it.
I first thought it was the power supply that was broken because absolutley nothing happened when I tried to turn on the computer. Not even the diods at the network connection was light up. I replaced the power supply with a new one and now the computer gets power (the diods are light up), but nothing still happens when I try to start up the computer.
So my question is, are there any way to configure the mainboard in a way that makes the computer start as soon as I switch on the power supply (instead of using the power switch connection on the JFP1 front panel connection)? I want to make sure that it is not just the front panel that is broken.
I would really apprieciate your help!

Do all or any fans start up?
Take the motherboard out, for a good visual - bad capacitators? - and for a test-run outside the case. Around the memory slots and the processor socket is where trouble mostly is found.
I hope it is as simple as a cable on the loose.

  • Onboard NIC, KT4V MS-6712

    Hi there,
When i try to connect to the internet with the onboard nic of my KT4V MS-6712 i get the error message "one of the networkcables is not connected".
With an sepperate nic i don't have any problems.
Is there some setting i did forget?
Nic is already enabled in the bios !
I have 3 machines behind an Edimax router with a cable connection.
    System specs:
    KT4V MS-6712
    AMD AthlonXP 1600+
    TwinMos 256Mb PC2100
    Hercules 3D Prophet 128Mb
    Creative Live! 5.1
    Maxtor 60Gb 7200rpm
    Q-Tec PSU 550 watt
    OS Win XP pro

I have the same problem on my ms-6712, the onboard LAN doesn't seem to work correctly, if I connect the network cable to the onboard LAN the lights flash on the modem and the board but I can't get an IP address for the LAN. Although it works fine on my PCI NIC. Very strange!
I've tried, in a desperate attempt, to use a cross over cable but that didn't work either. Although it shouldn't work with a cross over cable anyway.
If anyone has an answer for this one I'd sure like to know!

  • KT4V MS-6712 Odd sounds

Got this mobo a few weeks back now, everything seemed to be running fine.  Decided to change the heatsink/fan for something less noisey.
Now I have noticed a noise !!  Sounds like a off centre fan ! Checked all the fans in the system, nope they are all fine.  Then realised the noise only happens when I move the mouse(usb) or hotsync my palm(usb) or use the keyboard(ps2) !
The noise is not coming from the soundcard, it appears to from the mobo itself !
Anyone come across this before ?

  • KT4V (MS-6712) hangs on "Checking NVRAM.."

    Hi All.  I am using a KT4V (MS-6712) with an Ath.XP 2.1GHz and one PNY 512MB 333MHz DDR.
The PC has been working perfectly since I purchased the KT4V three weeks ago.  (by the way I am *so* impressed with this MSI MB - my first MSI!)
Now, on power-up POST hangs at "Checking NVRAM.."
If RESET is pressed, machine boots through POST normally and runs perfectly again.
I'm concerned the NVRAM error may be signs of bad things to come - can someone suggest where to start diagnosing the problem?  Test RAM throughoutly with some utility, etc.
    Thanks,
    AtlScout (Sam)

Thanks to everyone who responded; I reset CMOS and that seems to have solved the problem.  I hope every BIOS update won't cause the same problem! :-)
    Thanks again

  • Windows 8 USB 3.0 Problems

I have run into many USB 3.0 problems across multiple devices and computers running Windows 8 Pro 64-bit. After many headaches and sleepless nights I think I have narrowed all the problems down to one thing in Device Manager:
"Intel (R) USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller -0100 (Microsoft)”
The controllers (Multiple Computers) have had problems with all the Microsoft Drivers including the most resent: 6.2.9200.16548 3/1/2013
    The problems:
USB 3.0 External Optical Drives (labeled Windows 8 compatible) not recognized or continuously disconnecting/reconnecting with or without manufacturers drivers.
USB 3.0 Flash drives running slow and/or disconnecting often with data corruption/loss
USB 3.0 Flash drives not recognized
My solution: <Disabled> “Intel xHCI Mode” or “XHCI Pre-Boot Mode” in BIOS/Firmware
    This solution Takes the
"Intel (R) USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller -0100 (Microsoft)” out of Device Manager and eliminates all the problems stated above across multiple machines running Windows 8 Pro 64-bit.
However: This is not a fix.
The Intel USB 3.0 controllers on the machines seam to only run at 2.0 speeds. (Before they were also slow but much less functional, often not recognizing devices)
Non-Intel USB 3.0 controllers are fully functional at full USB 3.0 speeds. (Before they had limited or no function depending on the controller)
This appears to be a fix for non-Intel USB 3.0 controllers but what about the Intel controllers that take the lion’s share of USB 3.0 controllers on the market?
Dose Microsoft have a fix for
"Intel (R) USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller -0100 (Microsoft)”
Is there a new Microsoft driver coming out soon? How about an Intel driver for Windows 8 like the one they have for 7?
Am I the only one who is being slammed with this problem from every windows 8 machine I touch? I have not seen a large amount of discussion on the internet with such a seemingly big thing like USB 3.0 not working with Windows 8!

Hi I guess I am going to add a few more flies to the ointment.
I have a serious issue with USB 3.0 and I would like to hope that somebody may have an answer even if they are unable to help.
I run three different computers, for three completely different purposes, they are of different makes, One is an Acer, the other is a Pryon and the third is a Toshiba, I also have 2 Toshiba laptops, one brand new running Windows 8, the other running
Windows 7. So basically what I am saying here probably has nothing to do with the systems I am running.
I guess a lot of people are getting swindled here by the hard drive manufacturers and everyone here seems to be blaming it on windows. I have spent thousands of dollars replacing all my old 2.0 drives (and some were getting a bit tired) with these new fangled
super duper super fast 3.0 drives. I think overall in the past year I have bought around thirty of them, mostly portables, but some desktop ones, all different brands too I might add, Seagate, Western Digital, Toshiba and Samsung. This as you can imagine has
cost me a lot of money. The data I had on the old 2.0 drives equated to about 20 years of my life. Out of the roughly thirty I have bought, nine of them have bit the dust so to speak. Nearly all, once they become unusable, come up with the same thing, "The
last USB device you connected to this computer is not recognised.
As an example I will recount exactly what has occurred with the last one to fail, which was today about 4 hours ago as I write this. It was working perfectly fine this morning, never gave off one indication that it may be about to fail. Then after a restart
(which incidentally I am wondering if anyone else has this problem whereby once they shut down their computer they have to either power off or remove every USB 3.0 device from their unit before the computer will even start - this happens on two of mine - but
    not on the Toshiba)
So I shut down, I am using a powered 9 port hub for most of the portables on this particular system (Pryon) which I have to power off so all the drives disappear else the computer just hangs at the boot screen until I have done this) I have one 2,0 disc
connected which I don't need to remove for the system to start.
Anyways once I have restarted the computer I then re-power up the hub and all the drives are loaded again and away I go. Well that was all good except when I checked one of my drives was missing from the File manager that I use (Salamander) and also not
showing in Windows Explorer either. So I trace down the culprit, unplug it and re-plug it back in. Lo and behold up comes the afore-mentioned windows does not recognize this device. This is odd given that there are five other drives of the exact same make
and model attached to the same hub still working. As I don't have all the slots in the hub filled I decide to change the slot and plug it into a different one. Same result. So then I decide to plug it into a 3.0 slot connected directly to the box, same result.
As a last try I then plug it into a 2.0 slot on the box, same result. So then I take it out and try it on the other two boxes and eventually the laptop...same result....
I now have nine of these contraptions all totally useless to me....yes I guess I could send em back to Seagate and Toshiba and Western Digital and they will replace em with a brand new one...clean as a whistle with my twenty years up the poop chute....
I have looked everywhere through Google trying to find someone or somebody with the same problem as me, surely I cannot be the only person in Australia that happens to keep on getting the duds.
I've had 2.0 drives that have lasted ten years or more and probably may have went another ten if I didn't keep so called upgrading....some of these that have failed on me are not even 3 months old. I even had one desktop 3.0 drive that I bought on the Wednesday
in Adelaide and by the time I had gotten it home after my son had copied some stuff onto it..it wouldn't work.
I have tried just about everything I've ever read on these forums, like using a different cable, Ive even pulled one of the portable to pieces to be able to use an attachment that I can plug it directly into a 3.0 slot and still nada....
My newest laptop is still under warranty and I have had that back to the supplier twice with a main hard drive failure which they have had to replace.
The reason why I am suggesting here that it may not be all windows fault is that my other laptop is still running windows seven and once a drive cacks it it wont show up in that either....I will say this though, I only have one drive that I use in that laptop
and that is still running well.
Now before everybody jumps down my throat I have checked thoroughly for viruses on all my boxes, and they all are clean. And in anycase I've never heard yet about a virus that can attack one hard drive only, given that all that is on there is music, just
    like the other six.
Unless windows eight itself somehow manages to render a hard drive useless somehow then it has to be a fault in the manufacturing technology and that even though a drive might work perfectly for a week or two there is something there that the manufactures
    are missing in their testing.
Like someone said earlier, maybe it is going to take some massively big law-suit from a huge company that has lost everything against somebody for them to realise that USB 3.0 is tainted and no good.
Do they still make 2.0 cause I am going back there and hopefully I can do it before I lose everything, even though it will take a good part of six months to copy back over whatever it is that I still may have left....
Like I said I don't expect any answers but thank you for taking the time to at least read this...
    Cheers Vern

  • AMD-XP 2600+ and MSI KT4V MS-6712 MB

Can somebody help me pls? I do have a MSI KT4V MS-6712 Motherboard and an AMD Athlon XP 2600 processor. According the CPU RATIO settings table I should put the ratio 16 and the FSB on 133, but I don't have a 16. I only have a 15 and if I use the 15 instead of the 16 I do get a performance of 733 Mhz. When I use the 12.5/13 the system says it's a XP-2000+, but I'm still missing some Mhz. I did already upgrade the BIOS to version 1.8 but no results.
Pls help me, I'm getting crazy! ;(

I changed it into 166 Mhz and now it's acting as a XP 2600+.

  • K9VGM-V USB 2.0 problems

I'm assembling systems based on K9VGM-V motherboards.
They all have the strange behaviour that the front USB 2.0 ports , not always are recognised by Windows as 2.0
Sometimes they are reported as 1.0.
The USB ports on the back of the motherboard , are always working as 2.0.
Tested other brands of motherboards in same cases with the same USB apparatus , no problems.
All the K9VGM-V boards i tested have the same strange behaviour.
Who can help ?. Even bios update did'nt solve the problem.

MSI's USB configuration has the #10 pin set as OC(overcurrent), but many cases have a 9th wire(you only need 8 wires) leading to the #10 pin as a GROUND. This is where the problem occurs.  It is likely, that the "other" MOBOs that work may have the #10 pin, but it is not electrically connected and that's why you don't have an issue. BTW, Have you checked to see if you can remove the wire leading to the #10 pin on the USB header block of the case?  For my case, there is a tab you can lift to pull out a wire.  If you aren't going to cut or remove anything, then I guess you'll need to get a USB PCI card and use that instead.
MOBO drivers are the chipset drivers; the VIA 4in1. http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=driver&maincat_no=1&prod_no=260

Even though my ASUS M5A97 has USB 3.0 i get this error: Check your USB controllers for Kinect Windows v2 compability

I saw that back in November another person had the same problem and the only solution was to get a standalone USB 3.0 PCIx Gen 2.0 card that has an Intel or Rensas chipset.
Is there anything new to know? Or is this still the only way to get kinect v2 to work on motherboards that have different chipsets?

You'd probably get better results posting in the MacBook Pro forum; this is the Mac Pro (desktop workstation) forum. Also, it looks like USB 3.0 problems have been around for a while. See, for example, https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4028808?start=0&tstart=0.
