LabVIEW serial VI for LakeShore Temp. Monitor #208

Hi folks,
does somebody have a ready-to-go serial LabVIEW VI to control the
LakeShore temperature monitor model 208 or know a source for download?
The National Instruments website doesn't support any serial-driven
LakeShore Instruments (GPIB driven well).
Thanks in advance - David

While I don't have any experience with the LakeShore devices, don't give
up on the GPIB drivers. Very often manufacturers of instruments with
multiple control interfaces will use the same command structure and
protocol for all the interfaces (to keep their firmware simple probibly).
If such is the case for LakeShore the conversion to serial could be very
trivial. For example, if NIs GPIB version uses the VISA drivers all you
might have to do is change one initialization string because VISA can do
serial IO as well.

  • How to design LabVIEW programming for temperature monitoring using 4 thermocouples

    Hi all.
Sorry if this seems a simple question but I really sorry for the troubles. I'm a new user with LabVIEW and currently using LabVIEW 8.6 for a final year project of mine. I’m trying to monitor the temperature reading in 4 different depth of pavement for every 1 hour interval continuously for 1 month duration. Basically I’ll be using 4 separate thermocouples type J and NI 9219 device. My problems are:
I’m not sure how to design the LabVIEW programming for my application.
How to get the temperature reading data in Excel spread sheet.
How to set the min, max and average daily temperature for each thermocouple.
     Thank You.

  • Best temp monitor program for K8N and 6800GT?

I'm looking for a temp monitoring program that will display the following temps:
    CPU
    Chipset (system)
    GPU
Core Center is ok but it doesn't allow for precise history and it doesn't display GPU temp.

The only thing I can suggest is a hardware thermistor and display, I have a GMC X-21 case which has a small temperature display on the font, and you can place the thermistor anywhere you like. I have it in between 2 fins on my CPU heatsink and it reads the temperature exactly the same as corecentre.

  • Finding the serial number for an installed copy of Labview 6.1

I have a copy of Labview 6.0 (Full Development System) and also Labview 6.1.  I was able to find the serial number label in the package for version 6.0, but not for 6.1.  I do have 6.1 installed and working on my workstation.  Is it possible to determined the serial number for an installed copy of LabView?
Would the serial number for version 6.1 be the same as the serial number for version 6.0 that I upgraded from?

That's what I expected, however the window that pops up when I select Help->About LabVIEW contains only the following information:
    LABVIEW 6.1
    TCP Server inactive
    Memory Allocated: 13296K

  • Serial Labview VI's for contorlling a Yaskawa SMC-4040?

I just want to verify, this motion device doesn't need a controller.  It is essentially a stand-alone instrument where you'll just send commands for whatever motion you need it to preform. Is this correct?
If so, the driver that will allow you to send commands to your ports is NI-VISA.  I think what you are looking for, or the best option, would be if there is an "Instument Driver" for this device. Instrument drivers are packages of all the commands you would send using VISA.  I've looked and cannot see one on our website.  If we do not have it, your best bet is to contact the manufacturer and see if they have anything.
If you cannot find an instrument driver, you will still be able to communicate to the instrument manually using the VISA VI's and the command set for your instrument.  The best way to see how to do this is to open an example from the NI Example Finder in LabVIEW.  Go to "Help>>Find Examples"  then Navigate to "Hardware Input and Output>>Serial"  folder. I would suggest looking at the code for "Basic Serial Write and Read".  If you have any questions let me know.

  • Temp monitor for ppc?

what cpu temp monitor can be used for ppc mac mini or ppc mac?
using http://www.bresink.com/osx/TemperatureMonitor.html the widget one and i think that it is reporting the harddisk temp and not the cpu temp since it has the only option of "SMART Disk hardisk model here" and gave me a 45C-49C temp

  • Recommendations for server rack temp monitoring?

Our server room isn't large, we only have one rack with two Xserves, an Xserve RAID and a few other things. But temperature is obviously a concern and I worry about the day when the portable AC unit kicks the bucket and I'm away from the office.
Does anyone have recommendations some kind of temp monitoring device with email notifications, maybe web monitoring?

At work, we use a rack-mount Senturion Environment Monitor, it monitors the temp, humidity, etc. It can send SMS and email alerts, and you can monitor it on the web, it just needs power and a network connection. We got it when our AC actually did kick the bucket and 50 servers overheated. :-/

  • Looking for a serial driver for an agilent 4395A to work with labview

Can only find one for gpib I have no interface for gpib on my PC but i do have a rs232/gpib converter and was wondering if I could get a serial driver for the agilent 4395A for this.
    Thanks

I've only used the RS232/GPIB converter to go from a GPIB bus to a serial instrument so I can't speak for going the other direction but I would give it a try. However, you have big problems with the driver if its the same one I just downloaded from NI. It's not really what I would call a driver at all but an application program meant to be used stand alone. There is no breakout of instrument functions into subVIs and none of the controls or indicators are on the connector so you can't even use the high level app as a subVI without a lot of work. It is a contributed driver but I'm surprised NI accepted it because it doesn't follow any of the published rules for an instrument driver. It's not even a good example of program design, imho. There is a VISA dr
iver available from Agilent here and I would try that instead. To use a VISA driver with a serial port, you just specify the VISA resource name for that port instead of the GPIB resource name. For example, a GPIB resource name of an instrument with an address of 5 would be "GPIB::5::INSTR". To communicate to your instrument over com port 1, the VISA resource name is "ASRL1::INSTR". If the instrument has a serial port in addition to the GPIB, you could also try skipping the converter. Some VISA drivers work fine either way.

  • How do I create Labview VISA ports for *individual* GPIB instruments using Prologix USB GPIB controller?

    Hello,
I'm trying to use a Prologix USB GPIB controller to control GPIB
instruments, and I would like to have a virtual serial (VISA) port for
*each instrument*, as is the case with a normal GPIB controller with a
standard NI driver. However this is not what the Prologix driver
provides -- it provides a single VISA virtual serial port for the
entire controller. To address the instrument with GPIB address 11,
you first send "++addr 11" to the serial port, and then you're talking
to instrument 11. However, this means I have to change all old
    Labview programs.
Is it possible to create a "wrapper" function of some kind that will
define a virtual serial (VISA) port for each *instrument* on the
controller? For example, to talk to GPIB instrument 11, call it
ASRL3::11::INSTR, each time it is written to it would have to write to
the virtual serial port of the controller, say ASRL3::INSTR, first "+
+addr 11" and then the command that is sent to it.
A clearer explanation of the difference (i.e. incompatibility), and of
    my objective:
    1) A normal GPIB controller with NI driver: I go to the NI
Measurement & Instrumentation Panel, under GPIB, and Scan for
Instruments; all the live instruments show up; subsequently when I
want to use Labview programs that use VISA ports, the VISA drop boxes
allow me to choose a different port for each instrument, e.g.
"GPIB0::11::INSTR", "GPIB0::12::INSTR" would be instruments at
addresses GPIB 11 and GPIB 12.
    2) The Prologix GPIB controller that plugs into a USB port: In
Labview you get a *single* VISA virtual serial port, ASRL3::INSTR, for
the entire GPIB0 controller. Therefore to address GPIB instrument 11,
you write "++addr 11" to the virtual serial port ASRL3::INSTR, and
then you are communicating with device 11, so you can write and read
ASRL3::INSTR to talk to that device. Then to talk to device GPIB 12,
you write "++addr 12" to the same VISA port, and then you are talking
to that device. The problem is that this requires recoding all
Labview code, whereas I would like to be able to use the same program
either with a normal or with a Prologix GPIB controller. Therefore, I
would like to create code that scans the controller for all GPIB
attached devices and creates VISA ports for all. Such ports, when
written to, would have to first write "++addr DEVICENUM" to
ASRL3::INSTR (i.e. the port of the GPIB-USB controller) where
DEVICENUM is the GPIB address of the instrument corresponding to that
port, and then would have to do a write or read or whatever function
is being done on that instrument VISA port.
I haven't figured out if it is possible to do this easily. Help and
pointers on where to look for hints would be much appreciated. Many
    thanks!
    Milos

My first impression is that if you don't want to make any changes at all to existing programs is that the wrapper you need is one around VISA. You would need to intercept all of the calls into the NI VISA driver. If you create your own visa32.dll and in there, change the addressing and then call the real VISA driver, you might (repeat, might) get something to work. If this would even work, you still might find that you have to make significant changes anyway. The serial connection is going to be considerably slower, and interface specific functions such as service request handling, bus triggering of multiple instruments, etc., would be difficult to impossible. This would be a lot of work, imho, to just save a couple of hundred dollars over a real GPIB controller. I've seen this Prologix device before and have even used NI's RS-232->GPIB controller. The Prologix intended use to me seems to me more for a hobbyist or very casual user. Of course, I'm used to having multiple GPIB instruments worth 10s/100s of thousands of dollars and the cost of an fully compliant GPIB controller is just lost in the noise.

  • Suggestion for a Video Monitor For FCP

I am looking for a video monitor to use with FCP. The Sony PVM-14L2 13" has been recommended. Is anyone familiar with this monitor or do you have a monitor which is working well for you that you would recommend.
    1) Should I be looking for anything key features not listed below?
    2) Will I need any other hook ups to make this work with my system?
(Right now I am using a JVC SR-VS30U Dual Deck. A firewire from the computer to the deck and component from the deck to to t.v. the deck also has s-video)
    3) When I move into High Definition will this monitor work?
Key Features of the Sony PVM-14L2 13"
    Variety of Input Options
The monitor accepts composite, S-video, component and RGB signals standard without options. Serial Digital signals can be viewed with the optional
(with audio) or BKM-120D (without embedded audio). Even
, Sony's version of Fire Wire can be displayed with the optional BKM-155DV board.
    Beam Current Feedback Feature
In studio environments, monitors tend to be left on for long periods. This practice leads to white-balance drift and unstable color reproduction. The Beam-Current Feedback circuit corrects for drift over long-term usage of the monitor.
    Professional Set-up Features
Calibrating monitors assures that each display is showing correct colors which will match any other correctly calibrated display. The PVM-14L2 has set-up functions like Blue-Gun, H/V Delay, and selectable color temperature for these critical calibrations.

Sounds like a great choice as long as the size works for you. A small truly high-res monitor is much more useful than a big impressive soft one for analysis monitoring.
    1) I don't think you need anything else unless the JVC thing doesn't work out. In that case you can try your camcorder, or a capture device such as ADS Pyro, Matrox MXO, or one of the Aja or Decklink cards. Depends...
    2) JVC SR-VS30U - I don't know, there are a lot of devices that won't simply pass FireWire through, including many or most DVD recorders. Your best bet is to try it and monitor it on whatever you have.
If you're on NTSC you'll have to pay attention to the black setup. Many consumer digital devices these days won't put in the 7.5IRE setup for North America.
That's OK as long as you aren't using it to do analog conversions. If you can get FCP bars through the thing and set the monitor up properly to them, you should be OK. I'm sure the monitor can be set to 0IRE in menus if need be.
    3) It won't show you an HD signal. If you're using the MXO it will give you a realtime SD downconvert to monitor. But that monitor won't display anything but NTSC and PAL. If it did I would probably say that 13" is too small.
