Laptop for editing with Adobe Premiere & After Effects CS6

Hi, I'm just started a company working with young people, and I need a laptop for editing some videos (short films/music videos).
I was looking at a cheap laptop to be able to run Adobe Premiere and After Effects smoothly. I was told that this laptop would run smoothly:
http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/hp-envy-m6-1178sa-15-6-laptop-17419990-pdt.html
Can anyone confirm this? The graphics card is not listed on the Adobe's website but I was told it's compatible?
Im new to this stuff so please help, thank you.

How realistic are the system requirements Adobe posts on their site?
System requirements
Windows
Intel® Pentium® 4 or AMD Athlon® 64 processor with 64-bit support; Intel Core®2 Duo or AMD Phenom® II processor required for Adobe® Premiere® Pro, After Effects®, and Encore®; Intel Core i7 processor required for Adobe SpeedGrade™
Microsoft® Windows® 7 with Service Pack 1 (64 bit) and Windows® 8. Refer to the CS6 FAQ for more information about Windows 8 support.*
2GB of RAM (4GB recommended) for 32 bit; 4GB of RAM (8GB recommended) for 64 bit
14.5GB of available hard-disk space for installation; additional free space required during installation (cannot install on removable flash storage devices)
Additional disk space required for disk cache, preview files, and other working files (10GB recommended)
1280x900 display with 16-bit color and 512MB of VRAM; 1680x1050 display required, and second professionally calibrated viewing display recommended for SpeedGrade
OpenGL 2.0–capable system
Sound card compatible with ASIO protocol or Microsoft WDM/MME
DVD-ROM drive compatible with dual-layer DVDs (DVD+-R burner for burning DVDs; Blu-ray burner for creating Blu-ray Disc media)
Java™ Runtime Environment 1.6 (included)
Eclipse™ 3.7 (for plug-in installation of Adobe Flash® Builder®); the following distributions are supported: Eclipse IDE for Java EE and Java Developers, Eclipse Classic, Eclipse for PHP Developers
QuickTime 7.6.6 software required for QuickTime features, multimedia, and HTML5 media playback
Dedicated GPU card required for SpeedGrade (for optimal performance in SpeedGrade and for GPU-accelerated features in Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects: NVIDIA Quadro 4000, 5000, or 6000 or other Adobe-certified GPU card with at least 1GB of VRAM recommended); visit www.adobe.com/products/premiere/extend.html for supported cards
Optional: Tangent CP200 family or Tangent Wave control surface for SpeedGrade
Optional: For SDI output, NVIDIA Quadro SDI Output card required for SpeedGrade
Optional: 7200 RPM hard drive (multiple fast disk drives, preferably RAID 0 configured, recommended) for video products
This software will not operate without activation. Broadband Internet connection and registration are required for software activation, validation of subscriptions, and access to online services.† Phone activation is not available.
You have to be from another world to believe these requirements. Note the last optional statement. Up to and including CS4 this stated:
Dedicated 7200 RPM hard drive (multiple fast disk drives, preferably RAID 0 configured) for video products.
Nobody in his right mind believes that system requirements get lower over time. It is purely a marketing lie to artificially lure prospective buyers.
The requirement to have two physical disks for CS6 is bogus.
If anything is bogus, it is the system requirements from Adobe and only fools would try to use a system with these minimum requirements, like this:
Pentium 4 with 4 GB of RAM, 24.5 GB of hard disk space is enough according to them.
Harm is confusing editing with getting high PPBM scores, I am afraid - again.  Not all projects have 10 layers of H.264 stacked with heavy effects for two hours straight.  The vast majority of editing is simple transitions and effects with 10 minutes of YouTube encoding twice a week.
Wrong assumption. I was thinking of a simple DV timeline with one single track. And however much you dislike the PPBM benchmark, it is the only available tool to show how well a system is setup and in balance. Question: Is your dislike of the benchmark based on the fact that your favorite HP Z820 does not do well?

  • Adobe (Premiere & After Effects) on MacPro

    Dear Apple support,
    I currently own a late 2009 iMac 27".
I studied & using Adobe After Effects & Premiere Pro.
I'm seriously considering to buy the MacPro !
However: I am seeing a lot of talks in forums about problematic issues with the MacPro & Adobe.
    1. For example, see this discussion:  https://forums.adobe.com/message/7489619
To quote from the forum discussion:
"I'm very disappointed with Apple lately. Ever since they pulled out of exhibiting at the NAB Show, it seems they've been neglecting the needs of professional      users. They took too long to refresh the Mac Pro line and, when they finally did refresh it, it was more to the benefit of hobbyists than professionals in studio      environments"
         and
"more and more people are jumping to Windows. Windows 7 is rock solid for using Adobe software. I love it. You get more processing power for your money      with a PC and several companies are building very quality machines these days. Until Apple makes some changes, I'll recommend a PC workstation over a      Mac Pro"
Now, I love Apple, and I don't believe everything I read, but,
I assume that you guys are aware that there are many other discussions of this sort ?
    2. I also contacted Adobe's support.  I asked their support engineer, what would he buy? a MacPro or a PC.
He's reply was: "I'll go with Windows, Windows 7"
Would it be possible to hear directly from you (Apple support) what exactly the situation is with Adobe's products?
What is the present situation? and, what is going to happen in the future?
I own & love several Apple's products, and I'm very interested in the MacPro.
However, there are too many bad talks in the forums which are making me scared to invest in a MacPro (it's not cheap for me)
    I'm really confused !
Hoping to hear back a detailed & honest answer.
    Sincerely,
    Tal Mor

You are not talking to Apple Support when you post on this Apple User-to-User forum. Apple makes no promise to read these postings, and never responds here unless your post goes unanswered for several days.
Your question should be directed at Adobe, not Apple. Apple has provided good Hardware, and made a serious commitment to OpenCL. Final Cut X takes advantage of both.
Despite Adobe's public promises to take advantage of the new Mac Pro Hardware, they have been very slow at delivering software that takes advantage of the features of the new cylinder Mac Pro and developing OpenCL versions of their software. Adobe seems to prefer the proprietary approach provided by NVIDIA CUDA.

    Hi,
I love Adobe's applications as much as a carpenter loves his toolbox, but I cannot justify the monthly cost of a toolbox full of stuff while I only use half of it.

  • Best laptop for working with after effects

I need a laptop for work with adobe after effects and some others. Anyway I need laptop wich will not cost more than 1400€ and which will have inside intel core i7, 4 GB of memory or more and Nividia graphic card. Somthing more pls dont say the apple is the best beacuse i dont like it very much.
    Thanks.

4GB is a rather small amount of RAM for working with After Effects. If you can get a computer with more RAM, I recommend doing so.
For After Effects CS5, the graphics card (GPU) doesn't matter as much as RAM and CPUs, so focus on RAM and CPUs first.
In general, a laptop is not going to give you the same performance as a desktop computer of the same price. If you need a laptop, fine; but don't be surprised when performance isn't as good as you might like.

  • Avid Unity with Adobe Premiere Pro CC and After Effects

Has anyone used Avid Unity for media with Adobe Premiere Pro CC? I'd like to hear some feedback as we are working on doing that right now, and I'd like to know what the hurdles or pitfalls might be.

Open System Preferences > Mouse and/or Trackpad.
    Adjust the speed.

  • How much computer is enough computer to do editing with Adobe Elements 11 for the PC?

I've migrated away from SONY Vegas MovieStudio for the reason that it could not render out smooth-playing files for upload to the internet (I suspect SONY codecs are not so good). I find that my 4-year-old H/P Pavilion w/ AMD Athlon II 4-core CPU is not up to the task of editing with Adobe Premiere Elements 11.
SOLUTION: I've recently replaced the old machine with an off-the-shelf Hewlett/Packard Pavilion desktop computer, model p7-1515. This is a current model as of April 2013.
SPECS: Windows 8 OS, Intel Core i5-3470 processor (3.20 Ghz), Intel HD graphics 2500, 8 GB DDR3 memory, 1 TB SATA hard drive.
UPGRADES I WAS ABLE TO PERFORM MYSELF: The hard drive cage allows for the addition of just 1 additional hard drive and I have added a second 1 TB SATA drive. Memory has been increased with the addition of a second 8Gb RAM module. I downloaded and installed Apple QuickTime 7.7.3.
I've been working with this new computer for several days and have had no problems to report. None. I realize that 'acceptable performance' is often in the eyes of the user. My experience with the H/P Pavilion p7-1515 is that it is quite up to editing within Premiere Elements 11.
As this posting is not a 'question' per se, the board moderator might wish to relocated it. Just thought my experience might be worth sharing with users looking for a 'budget-friendly' desktop machine. Disclaimer: I am not associated with H/P and have no monetary interest in the sale of their products.

Amazing camera, including when it is used for video.  If you like birds and wildlife shooting get the Panasonic brand tele extender lens.
In my experience, your work flow is both simple and reliable.  I've done it many times.  I too am happy!

  • No option for export pro res 422 from after effects cs6

There is no option for export prores 422 from after effects cs6 on new mac os 10.8.2 shows up and works on older mac 10.6.8
How can I get this option back?

I will guess that you used to have Final Cut Pro, but you no longer have it.  Generally, only machines with Final Cut Pro installed are able to write to ProRes 422.
There are third-party codec packages that do write to the ProRes family of codecs.  They have been discussed in this forum, and you could search for their names.  I'm sorry to say that I don't remember them.

  • A virus that affects...  After Effects CS6?

    Hi everyone,
Although I read online that others had the same issue as me, I couldn't find any solution.
    please see  post # 15   http://forums.adobe.com/thread/630006   POST # 15
    After I restarted my pc,
After effects cs6 is staying that "I have more than 1 copy of plugins and to remove one of them".
Now, I know this is a normal message from adobe, however, I know it's not true because:
    1. I have NO extra copies of plugins.
    2. AE is saying I have a copy of EVERY SINGLE plugin installed. (around 300 )
    3. I removed ALL plugins until AE could ***** about duplicates.
Once I removed all of them, I got  " TRACKER _REGISITER:MISSING SUITE "
    "AE can not  continue"
    Has anyone experienced this before?
    Thanks
    Lou

I'd run the AE cleaner tool, remove the Library/Application Support/Adobe/Common/After Effects CS6 directory completely, then re-install and re-install your plug-in's.
You shouldn't go about removing plug-ins from their folders and expect things to work. All it takes is deleting one and you can get the error message you are seeing.
It's very unlikely that a virus caused your problem. It could have been a host of other things. It only takes one duplicate hiding somewhere in an alias or installed in the wrong directory to foul things up. If you've got 300 additional plug-ins then it's not surprising that something got broke during an update or an install especially if your plug-ins were not installed with an installer.

The biggest problem with the Asus in question is that it will be really hard to upgrade it and I still did not find a model with SSD.
    I found a comparision review here:  http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Asus-N550JV-CN201H-Notebook.98311. 0.html
The Asus scores better in the cinebench sector (slightly with OpenGL and much with CPU)  and the Lenovo is better in the Pcmark7 and the 3dmark11. What are these tests? and which one is more important when it comes to video editing?
Thank you again for your time and efferts
P.S. I am studying the article about Hard disks, it is really interesting!!! thanks
Correct it is a 17-inch, and of course it weighs and costs slightly more than a 15.6-inch
It is a very simple task to upgrade the unit to an dual SSD system, and memory upgrade is very easy.  You undo one screw on the bottom and (below) this is what you see.  Two disk drive carriers with my SSD's installed and two 8 GB SODIMM add on RAM modules
Those benchmarks have very little to do with editing with Premiere, there is only one real comperhensive Premiere benchmark it is our PPBM.

  • Is the NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M in the new MacBook Pro supported by Adobe for Premiere & After Effects

    Thanks
Unfortunately, I've found that many of the users here are PC users. While they are helpful, it's rare to get anything beyond guesses for Adobe Premiere CC performance on Macs.
I've noticed that the list of "supported" GPU's is not updated all that much by Adobe. It took a while after last year's macs were released for that list to be updated with those GPUs. But the 750M has 2GB VRAM and pretty much any GPU with 1GB of VRAM or more can take advantage of the Mercury Playback Engine on Premiere CC (http://blogs.adobe.com/premierepro/2013/06/adobe-premiere-pro-cc-and-gpu-support.html)  With CS6, if your card isn't on the "list" you could add it using that hack that people talk about but you don't have to worry about that with CC as the above link explains.
While the regular 15" Macbook with the integrated graphics card is probably good enough to edit w/ Premiere CC, I don't think you'll be able to take advantage of any GPU acceleration because of the lack of a dedicated GPU with 1GB of VRAM. I am running Premiere CC on an iMac with an AMD GPU that isn't on the list, but does have 1GB of VRAM so I can take advantage of gpu accleration (however, while it's smoother than "software only", it definitely has it's REALLY annoying issues). I'm sure it'd be better with a newer NVIDIA card (from what I've read anyway) but like you, it's hard to get feedback from many people on these forums who use macs.
Hope this helps. I for one would go with the 750M. It's more $$$, but I'm guessing it'll be worth it. Just a guess though. I wish someone with that laptop (or even a 2013 iMac with similar GPU) would chime in with their thoughts.

  • I have an HP laptop preloaded with Adobe Premiere Elements 10. For whatever reason Elements will "run" on click, but not even open the load screen or anything and then act like I never tried to open it? whats going on?

I bought my HP laptop in 2012, and it came preloaded with Adobe Premiere and Photoshop Elements 10
It worked fine and I even made a few video edits back in 2012 but for the last year Elements just REFUSES to work properly
I used to be able to open elements to at least the "what do you want to do?" screen
But now It won't even open this...I have no idea why...
If I double click the Elements application my computer slows down, bracing itself to load, and then ....thats it....it reverts to its normal speed and elements just doesn't open...
Any help would be great cause I feel like I've exhuasted all self-troubelshooting options and need to either get help from the forums or take the laptop in before I smash it in rage

Thanks for the reply with additional information.
Recent history for Premiere Elements points to the program having problems when more than 1 video card/graphics card is
being used by the computer on which Premiere Elements is running. This observation may seem contra indicated by the fact
that you say that the program did work well about 2 years ago in the same setup. But other factors may have set in with regard
to drivers, drivers versions, and driver conflicts. But this factor, does need to be ruled in or out.
Can you disable one or the other card to determine the impact of this on your problem?
But, of prime concern with regard to video card/graphics card is the use of a NVIDIA GeForce card with Premiere Elements 10.
Even if your NVIDIA GeForce were the only card, Premiere Elements 10 will not work properly unless the NVIDIA GeForce driver
version is rolled back to about May 2013. This may be one of the major factors here.
    a. Device Manager/Display Adapters and find out Driver Version and Driver Date

ATR Premiere Elements Troubleshooting: PE10: NVIDIA Video Card Driver Roll Back

Add On...This NVIDIA GeForce situation is specific for Premiere Elements 10. You should not expect to see the problem for
    later versions of Premiere Elements.
