Laptop only connects up close and personal

My router used to live a foot away from my laptop on my desk.   I re-arranged my office and the homehub is now about 2 yards away.   Laptop keeps dropping connection, saying there is no internet connection, not seeing any connections at all.   It behaves the same in other offices or homes.   Tried the usual stuff like changing channels or uninstalling/re-installing the network adaptor.   May have to give laptop a **bleep** good thrashing.   Any more sensible suggestions most gratefully received.
Thanks

I have a Toshiba Satellite L675-S7104. I have wireless internet, and the laptop will only connect in one room. However, my work laptop and other devices are able to connect all over the house. Common story with Tier 1 support personnel. Apples and oranges really, just because other units connect does not necessarily mean the router is not part of the problem. Regardless, let's assume Comcast has ensured the router has the latest firmware, as there's nothing we can do about that.

  • Why is my laptop only connecting to the base station at home and not other wireless networks?

I can't connect to public wireless networks. I connect to my work wireless through 802.1X connection, but in other places my wifi just looks for the base station, and doesn't pickup available public guest networks. Any assistance is appreciated!

Back up all data before making any changes.
    Step 1
Take all the applicable steps in this support article.
    Step 2
If you're running OS X 10.8.4 or later, run Wireless Diagnostics and take the remedial steps suggested in the summary that appears, if any. The program also generates a large file of information about your system, which would be used by Apple Engineering in case of a support incident. Don't post the contents here.
    Step 3
If you're not using a wireless keyboard or trackpad, disable Bluetooth by selecting Turn Bluetooth Off from the menu with the Bluetooth icon. If you don't have that menu, open the Bluetooth preference pane in System Preferences and check the box marked Show Bluetooth in menu bar. Test. Continue if you find that Wi-Fi is faster with Bluetooth disabled.
From that same menu, select Open Bluetooth Preferences. If the box labeled Discoverable is checked, uncheck it. Click the Advanced button, and in the sheet that opens, uncheck the top three boxes, if any are checked. Click OK. Enable Bluetooth and test again.
If the application called "Bluetooth Setup Assistant" is running, quit it.
    Step 4
This step will erase all your settings in the Network preference pane. Make a note of them before you begin, and recreate them afterwards. It may be helpful to take screenshots of the preference pane.
Triple-click the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item named "SystemConfiguration" selected. Move the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator password.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
    Step 5
    Reset the System Management Controller.
    Step 6
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service center.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional — ask if you need guidance.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.

  • HP Pavilion laptop only connect to the internet when security is turned off

My HP Pavilion laptop running windows vista sp2 connects to the internet only when wireless security is turned off on my airport extreme (brand new purchased last week). Once I set-up wireless security my laptop shows local network access only and I lose my internet connection. Also, when I try to get back into the setup utility I get the following error message “an error occurred while trying to access the apple wireless device” and I cannot make any changes to my airport extreme set-up. I have tried many restarts and resets, but have only been able to connect properly with my laptop when wireless security is off. Additionally, during my setup attempts, my iphone has always had internet access. Greatly appreciate if anyone can offer ideas on how to fix this.

Have you tried resetting the modem and restarting your computer?

  • My laptop wifi connection disables automatically and red cross comes up

    Hello
I just bought a new toshiba laptop L850-B211 with win 7 home premium 64 bit and i have noticed that my wifi disables automatically in between and i see a red cross come up on the tower icon....when i click on the tower cross it automatically connects....and
works fine again. But why is it disabling the wifi adapter automatically. this happens in every 30 or 40 mins even when i am surfing the net. Is this a hardware problem or some setting in windows 7 or toshiba power management utility which is causing this
problem. Also to mention i always use my laptop with power cord connected. The model no of wifi adapter is ATHEROS AR9485WB-EG.
    Thanks,
    Amit T.

    Hi,
When trying to connect the Wireless network, please check the “Start the connection automatically” option. Then, when you trying to connect certain Wireless network next time, it should connect
    to the Wireless network automatically.
In addition, update the wireless adapter driver to see how it works.
    Also, please check this thread:

    Hope this helps.

  • Secure Connection-random pickup and drop

I am using a linksys SRX router running WPA personal encryption and my SSID is not broadcast. There is one windows desktop and 2 mac laptops on my network, all connect wireless.
    Now for my problem...
On starting up my laptop it will normally find my network and connect no problem. When I close the lid (putting it in sleep) and re-open it about 50% of the time it will NOT automatically connect to the network.
    A couple of strange things:
    1) The problem seems to be getting progressively worse(My MBP is only 2 1/2 weeks old). The first 4-5 days I had no problems at all. Once it started happening it seems to be more frequent as time continues.
    2) When the problem first happened simply turning the laptops airport off then on fixed the problem.
That stopped working and I had to add another step in the process by clicking on my wireless icon and selecting my network. (even though it already was checked)
Now if that simply fixed it I would not be so bothered, unfortunately that method of 'fixing' it stopped working tonight.
When I tried to use my normal 'method' tonight, my network name was no longer in the drop down menu.
I then selected 'Open Internet Connection...' in the menu and configured my network. This still was not fixing the problem.
So i go into the 'network' tab and 'configure', and my network is the first in the default network section.
The only thing that seems to 'fix' the problem now is to click on the 'assist me' tab and run 'diagnostics'. When i do this, it prompts me for my network info and then connects immediately once its entered.
Sorry for the extra long post I was trying to explain the problem and how i currently 'fix it' as thoroughly as possible.
quick recap- when i close my lid and open it up my laptop only connects to my network half the time. On startup it connects 80% of the time.
The 'fix' for me to connect has gotten longer and more complicated....please help me
MBP, 2.33ghz Core2Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   also runs windows

Does'nt seem to matter what router you have, because Apple blame every body else's equipment - this is their advise:
Mac OS X 10.4.8: Intel-based Mac can't obtain IP address from third-party wireless router
    Symptom or Issue
After installing the Mac OS X 10.4.8 update, Intel-based Macintosh computers may not be able to obtain IP addresses from some third party wireless routers.
In this event, the Mac is generally able to associate with the wireless network, but it will obtain a self-assigned IP address (169.254.x.x) and will not be able to connect to the Internet.
    Products affected
    Mac OS X 10.4.8
    All Macintosh computers
    Solution
Turn the wireless router off and back on.
Note: This step will disconnect any clients currently connected to the wireless network provided by this router.
If restarting the router does not resolve the issue, contact the manufacturer of the third-party wireless router to resolve this issue.
The last sentence says it all - its somebody else's problem!
My MBP C2 does the same!!
All my other Mac work perfect with Netgear DG834G, My MBP C2 does not, so it seems to me its the Apple MBP C2 that has the problem not third party equipment - so Apple get your finger out and solve the problem.....

  • Laptop Only???

I have a Dell laptop (only computer I have) and a Linksys wireless router and I am pretty well computer challenged.
Can I set up the router to work with the laptop without using a cable connection from my  the router to the computer???
In other words, can I go from the modem to the router with a cable and then set-up the system wireless using the laptop???
Everything I read about in the set-up info says to use cables....from the modem to the router to the "computer".   Is that a must before I can use the laptop in wireless mode???
Message Edited by Hank2 on 01-07-200712:41 PM

Yo have to setup the router wired to your laptop.  But once you have it configured to the way you want it you can disconnect the cable and go wireless.  But anytime you need to change a setting on the router make sure you do it wired.  Otherwise you can brick the router.

  • Should my laptop be connecting faster?

    Hi!
I was just wondering if my laptop should be connected faster to my HH3?

Anything above that ie 65/72Mbps is wireless n."
I have a wireless n adapter and I have to keep turning it off and on a number of times before it will synch at the faster speed.
Someone else had same problem and ended up replacing his HH3 with another manufacturers.-

What can I say - anyone having issues with the Home Hub 3, get this router, you will not be disappointed!!!"
So as your laptop appears to have b/g/ and n (have you up to date wireless driver?) you also could try another router....
    But first I'd try.-
Setting your HH3 to transmit only "n" 40mhz
Also make sure your on a clear channel.... but doubt thats a problem as I guess you've moved the laptop next to the hub to test things.
Perhaps get hold of a cheep wireless n adapter to try as a test??? Another with faster speed

  • Mifi Jetpack only connecting at 3G

I'm paying for 4G but my Jetpack only connects at 3G…and I keep getting overages that are impossible! What gives Verizon??

    Two separate issues here.
First step is to confirm that 4G LTE is actually available in your area.  You can check the coverage map to confirm or preferably check 4G LTE on a separate VZW device.  If there is no service or a service issue then there is nothing you can do about it but move to an area with coverage.  If there is coverage for 4G LTE and your Jetpack is not connecting then perform the various resets followed by contacting VZW for support options.
Data overages is something different.  There isn't a whole lot anyone can do to assist you with data overages.  If VZW says you consumed data then you are liable to cover those costs.  You need to investigate what is going on with your devices and put a stop to the data leak.  Shutting down the Jetpack when it is not in use will help a little but is only a temporary solution.  I suggest starting with the data usage logs and cross referencing the timestamps with who was connected at those times and on what devices.

  • Thinkpad Edge E535 only connecting at 72MBPS on 802.11n

As I have a Thinkpad that supports 802.11n I purchased a Netgear WiFi router also capable of 300MBPS 802.11n expecting to get improved WiFi performance (over my existing 802.11g WiFi router). However it only connects at 72MBPS (and I'm less than 0.5m from the router).
How do I enable the E535 to connect at the maximum router speed?

    Thanks for the reply Dennis.
I probably should have given more details but the environment I am concerned with is an enterprise comprising hundreds of sites / tens of thousands of machines. Obviously any driver setting changes are not scalable across (pretty much any) enterprise environment. I would expect that scripting such changes would be a nightmare even on a single chipset, let alone many of them.
I have a list of the almost 100 chipsets detected in our environment and so was planning to use this as the basis a script (not more than 10 of those chipsets would be 802.11n however). Of this 100, not more than 20 would be relevant to sites where this deployment it to take place. The script I am referring to would not change the band select of the driver (many drivers don't even seem to support it) but would detect the chipset and place the computer object in the correct OU, hence getting the relevant GPO and therefore SSID. I can't see a better solution than this at this point in time. Yes maintaining this would be a pain, but for the time being I see it as the best option.
As you say, band steering is a very important feature but I can't see it steering 802.11a/g clients into the "preferred" band anytime soon but would love to hear otherwise. Preferred in this case, in most deployments where capacity is a major factor, is the 2.4 GHz band.
Like you have mentioned, I have tested clients with a single SSID and the results were not pretty.
My preferred solution is to prevent 802.11a clients on the 5 GHz radio by disabling all 802.11a rates. This obviously works to prevent 802.11b clients from connecting in 2.4 GHz so the same support would be nice at 5 GHz. I could then advertise the 2 x SSIDs in a GPO and the clients (should) connect correctly, with any luck. I have done this previously and it works with the 802.11n and 802.11g clients... just not the 802.11a clients.

  • One laptop connects 90% of the time to a RVS4400N and one only connects intermitently.

This is a confusing scenario so I'll try to be as clear as possible.
I have a network with the following configuration:
A Linksys wireless router (WRVS4400N) is connected to a Verizon Westell DSL modem. (Downstream speed is 1.5Mb/s.) A client based app. connects to a server that houses data for the client on the Internet.  Two laptops are connected to the network via WiFi.  A Vaio can connect consistently to the Internet and run the app with little or no problems.  However, a Toshiba only can connect about 10% of the time.  When running the app on the Toshiba it eventually times out, or runs very slowly. (it's a connection problem not the client running slowly on the laptop.)
Here's the confusing part: the Toshiba can connect, using the client app, when on another wireless router, just not on the WRVS4400N router.
To review: On the WRVS4400N router the Vaio can usually connect to client app's server.  Toshiba usually can't.  However, Toshiba can connect when using another wireless router.
I can't figure out what's wrong.  If I connect the Toshiba using a CAT-5 cable directly to the DSL modem it works fine.  And when I connect it to a port on the WRVS4400N router, via a CAT-5 cable, it also works fine.
I was thinking it had something to do with a keep alive timer on the Toshiba but it just appears that the connection the Toshiba has to the Linksys wireless router is slow.
    Ideas??

Are the adapters 802.11g, 802.11n? Or other?  Which wireless adapter is working and which is not.  I'm assuming the Real-Tek is not.
How is the wireless setup on the WRVS4400N?  Which mode are you using, i.e. B/G/N-Mixed or other?
Within the WRVS4400N's web interface, if you go to the Wireless tab and select Advanced Wireless Settings, what settings are active in the WMM and IOT Mode drop-down menus?  You can dry to disable WMM or enable IOT mode if you are using 802.11n adapters and see if that helps.

  • Connecting 5700 with laptops' only digital AND analog output

    Hi everyone!
Although I'm an experienced creative user this is the first time I'm posting. I looked trough the forums but I couldn't find any answer to my question and I hope this is not the "n"th time it is asked...
I have Inspire 5700 Digital speakers and I recently bought a Sony VAIO VGN-FES laptop, with an Intel 945PM Express chipset, which features Intel HD audio. In the sound setup utility of Sigmatel HD audio, there is even an option to enable digital SPDIF output, which I enabled. But when I connect the digital din cable to my laptops only output jack (headphones...) I have no sound at all...
I thought that it may be due to the fact that the jack is not digital only. But I still want to have real digital 5.1 audio. So could anyone tell me how I can do that?
    Thanks beforehand!

    Addlclove,
in the sony forums the answer I recieved was that the headphone jack was normally 2.1 analog, but I didn't receive a fulfilling answer to my query about the reason to the spdif setting in the setup utility and the chipsets features. That's why I came here The only output I have on the computer is the one for the headpohes. But there is a docking station that I could buy, having an optical out.
    And Jason-CL,
You're right, I used to have an Audigy, and I understand that you're saying that I can't do it through the headphone jack, right?

Make sure location is set correctly
DNS should be on auto (settings - general - network)
    Try ethernet
Signal strength on device won't account for issues, you would need a network report from istumbler, netstumbler or similar. This will show accurate signal strength along with noise and nearby networks
