Latency and External effects

Hi,
just wanted to know whether Logic NOW correctly handles latency on external effects, and by correct I mean is it automatically compensated for?
Blessings and Love
Beya

Since I invented the "Latency Fixer" plugin, I think I should answer this post.
I use outboard gear rather than plugins. When routing audio out through the converters and back, latency is a serious problem. I found that using the track delay parameter to compensate for this latency was worthless, since it is tied to the song tempo, it is too time consuming to set up for each song. It is also not sample accurate.
I theorized that since all AU plugins need to report their latency to the Core Audio driver, a simple plugin could be created to do nothing more than to report a certain amount of latency which was specified by the user, thereby causing the Core Audio system to read that track ahead by this fixed amount. I contacted three programmers aboout coding this simple plugin. All three said it was impossible, but OS from the OS collective actually responded with questions and arguments, and we started a dialog. After a few permutations we came up with the current incarnation. In Logic 6 is was not possible to set up a different compensation for each instanciation, but in Logic 7 it is.
In my work I require absolute sample accuracy, and I much prefer to know precisely that my interfaces are compensated to this degree.
I recently sent off one of my MOTU HD192 to MOTU for repair, and the unit they returned back was a different hardware revision. It had a ONE sample difference in latency from my other HD 192. MOTU took a rather arrogant stance, telling me that I cannot hear one sample difference. Trust me, when you are parallel processing using outboard gear, one sample causes a serious phase problem.
Despite what the above poster said, there is NO means to adjust for insert latency in Logic. There is a recording delay parameter , but that has no effect on this problem.
Also, the latency changes with each Logic version and OSX revision. You need to re-test your system using the method outlined above each time you update any part of the software.
If you are using a firewire interface, you may find that it is impossible to accurately compensate for latency due to Apple's firewire driver issues.

  • Strange new problem with external effects and latency compensation

i'm currently facing a new , very strange problem with latency compensation for external effect devices. it alway worked fine for me but suddenly there are strange things going on. i'm suddenly running into problems when using sends which feed auxes going to external effect devices.
latency compensation is set to ALL !!!
    easy setup :
    - open an empty project and create 2 audioinstrument tracks. on the first one load the exs with a drumkit and record f.e. a bassdrum pattern. leave the 2. instrument empty.
    - now on the first audio instrument create a send to bus 1 -> aux 1 and insert the i/o plug-in in the aux and route it to your external effect device. chose a temposynced delay.
    - press play = everything is fine when audioinstrument 1 is highlighted in the arrange.
    - press stop, click on the track with the 2. audioinstrument and press play = totaly weird timing problems. delay is only in sync when track 1 is highlighted.
    - create a send in the 2. audioinstrument and route it to bus 1 -> aux 1 too = still the same problem
now insert ANY softwareinstrument in audioobject 2 and suddenly the timing for the delay is right.
go ahead and create a 3. audioinstrument track but leave it empty first. chose it in the arrange = again weird timing problems with the external delay.
insert any software instrument on audioinstrument 3 = still the same problem
now create the send to bus 1 -> aux 1 in audioinstrument 3 and guess what, timing is right.
*** is going on here ? can anyone reproduce that ?
it works fine when using sends which feed auxes with software effects inserted.
funny thing is, when i go to the environment and change aux object one to bus object 1 and insert the same i/o in it it works !!!
very very strange, please tell me i'm not crasy and this is a bug !!!
as said, latency compensation is set to all.
i'm using the mac pro 3.2 8-core running os 10.5.4, logic 8.0.2 and a motu pci-e audio system.

    Welcome to the Discussions.
If you need it formatted FAT32, reformat it on your Mac. Use MS-DOS (FAT32) as the file system. If you don't need it for both PC and Mac, format it HFS+ and you'll be able to use the Retrospect Express software that came with it on your Mac.

    tornado2003,
What you need to do is boot into Safe Mode. Then delete the VGA Drivers.
After that boot normally and install the latest nVidia ForceWare Drivers
    Take Care,

If you have records that show that you've taken your MacBook Pro in for a year to fix the machine, I would escalate the problem to Apple Customer Relations - unfortunately I don't have a number for Spain.
It would only seem logical to me that if you've been trying to have the machine repaired during the time that the 'recall' was in effect that you should be eligible for a new logic board. But only customer relations will be able to make that call.
Good luck - take the issue as high up the food chain as you can and see what happens.

  • Problem with Matrox Mini, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 570, Premiere 5.5.2 and After Effects CS5.5

    Hello,
We have a couple video workstation PC's in our office.
Premiere and After Effects have been crashing lately with increasing frequency - about every two minutes now.
    Here is the setup:
    Hardware
Matrox Mini - Matrox Utility release 5.5.1
Nvidia GeForce GTX 570 - Driver release 275.33
Intel Xeon X5660 2.8 GHz processors
    24 GB Ram
    Software
    Adobe CS5.5, specifically...
    After Effects 10.5.0.253
    Premiere 5.5.2
    Windows 7 64-bit
We have two 21" LCD monitors in dual display running from the computer, and the Matrox Mini outputs a preview signal to a 15" CRT.
The crashes occur when I have After Effects and Premiere open at the same time. I am editing in a Matrox 720p29.97 timeline in Premiere. I imported several compositions from AE into Premiere through Dynamic Link and am matching audio with the animations in comps. When I switch back to AE to make an edit in the comp, After Effects generates a crash warning and then gives me the opportunity to save the project under a new name. After saving, it closes down completely. The Matrox WYSIWYG Control Panel in the system tray crashes during AE's crash, disabling the preview to the CRT from Premiere and AE. Since the Premiere sequence is a Matrox preset - in order to have output to the CRT - this freezes the timeline; the video and audio no longer play. When I save and then try to close Premiere, Premiere freezes and will not close without a force quit via the Task Manager.
In order to deal with this temporarily, I am editing in an AVCHD 720p30 sequence preset in Premiere, which doesn't send a preview feed to the CRT, obviously, since it's not a Matrox preset and the CRT is connected via the Matrox Mini. It's more than a minor inconvenience, since I use the CRT for color accuracy.
It is frustrating, since we did not have this problem until the recent CS5.5.2 update. We have tried changing drivers for the GTX 570 and changing the Matrox utility software to other versions, but no luck.
Is there a combination of GTX 570 drivers, Matrox software releases, and AE/Premiere settings that will make this work? I know there are "Known Issue" posts with Nvidia cards on Matrox's website, which include the GTX 570, but, again, this problem started with the Adobe CS5.5.2 update.
Any help here would be great, and I am willing to provide more information about the system and our crashes if it helps find a solution for the community, as I know this is not an isolated problem after reading Nvidia's, Matrox's, and Adobe's forums. I just can't find a hollistic solution on any of the individual manufacturer's forums.
    Thank You.
    Jordan

I've been running with Matrox for years, starting with the Axio LE. I do 75% broadcast work and find that the Matrox works very well with my kind of workflow. Monitoring is critical and since we have to deal with 3rd. party solutions, Matrox was my pick dating way back to 2006. Sure I've had frustrations with it, but I've made far more money off Matrox than frustration.
       Here's my nearly crash-free setup:
    Gigabyte GZ-X58A-OC moboard
Intel 990X (only overclocking to 4.0)
    24Gb of Kingston HyperX Ram
    GTX580 Graphics Card
    Matrox MXO2-LE w/Max
Crucial 240Gb Sata III drive (the one that has a nearly perfect score on Newegg's site)
    2 x 2Tb WD Blacks Raid 0
    2 x 1Tb WD Blacks Raid 0
Win 7 Ultimatte (it's a high-end version of Windows that's great for keying!)
    CS5.5 Suite
    Boris Red 5
    Boris Continuum Complete 8
Trapcode Shine, Form, 3d Stroke, Starglow, and Particular
    Optical Flares by Video CoPilot
The reason I list all of that software, is that it all seems to get along together, including with Matrox! So, I can't say I highly endorse Matrox because I've never tried Black Magic or running an external monitor off of my video card.
I use After Effects with all sorts of plug ins and rarely have crashes. If I put in a long day I'll have the usual crashes here and there (mainly with PremierePro), but nothing that has required evan a soft reboot of the computer.
My frustration with Matrox is mainly the delay that often comes with Adobe coming out with a new release and Matrox taking 2 or 3 months to catch up, though when Adobe went from 5 to 5.5, there was no delay at all.
I think that a lot of the people who trash Matrox probably haven't used a Matrox product in years. But before you listen to me, I must confess that I was an early adopter (and advocate) of SSDs and even today, many people on this forum think they're still a waste of money!
I'll close by simply saying that I've not left Matrox after 5+ years, but keep in mind I haven't had the bad experiences that so many others seem to have had, but again, perhaps they had those bad experiences long ago.

  • Final Cut and After Effects "file is busy"

    Hello All-
I am running Final Cut Pro 5.1.4 and After Effects 7.0.1 Pro (on OS 10.4.8) and I have a question. I have a series of After Effects animated DV Quicktime clips edited together in Final Cut, and when I make changes to the After Effects project files and try to rerender, I get an error:
    After Effects error: unable to overwrite - file is busy (delete) (-47) ( 3 :: 3 )
It's like Final Cut is "holding onto" the files and not allowing After Effects to rerender them. If I close down Final Cut, I can rerender just fine, but this gets real annoying closing it down and restarting it every time I need to rerender a clip. The problem is, because of my workflow, I need to do this dozens of times a day with clients in the room and I'm spending a lot of time closing and restarting Final Cut over the course of a day... is there way to do this without closing down Final Cut?
I assigned After Effects to be the "External Editor" for "Video Files", and used Final Cut's "Open In Editor" command. It sends the quicktime file to After Effects (not exactly what I want) and you would think that at this point Final Cut would have relenquished its access to the file so that I could rerender in After Effects, but nope, I still get the error. I have tried this with the User Preference setting "Always Reconnect Externally Modified Files" both on and off, no difference. I have also tried "Embed Project Link" in After Effects's quicktime output options, but this didn't help anything (I believe this only affects other Adobe apps).
The weird part of this is that when I drop a Photoshop file onto the Final Cut timeline, I can do "Open in Editor", it throws it to Photoshop, I can alter it and save with no problem, and pop back into Final Cut and it will be updated. But no such luck with Quicktime files and After Effects.
Let me know if there is a solution to this, or if I am stuck having to shut down Final Cut every single time I need to rerender one of the After Effects animation clips in the timeline.

    MacBook Pro 2.33ghz Core 2 Duo 15"   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   3 gigs ram, 160 gig HD

What i have to suggest is more of a work around than it is a solution. i've had this problem off and on as well. What i do is add a number to the name of the newly rendered file, (ie. "monkey_throwspoo2.mov") import that file into FCP, open it in the viewer, and then copy it (apple + c). Provided it's the smae length as the previous file, you can right click on the previous file in the timeline and paste attributes, making sure to click on the content button for video (and audio if there is any). This should replace the old file in the timeline with the new one. Granted, you end up having a bunch of files that you're not using, but it's faster than restarting Final Cut (and looks more like it's something you're doing on purpose rather than a problem with the program to your clients). Hope this helps.

  • Viewing footage on desktop and external monitor at same time

Maybe i'm missing something, but is there any way to view footage simultaneously on your desktop monitor and your external broadcast monitor (via blackmagic output)?
Right now when I enable mercury transmit, the viewer within speedgrade goes to grey and I can only see the footage on the external monitor.  This makes it impossible to draw custom shapes around objects (rather than just use the stock circle masks) which I use quite a bit...I would like to have the view on both monitors like I have in resolve.
If this isn't possible, is there a quick shortcut to toggle mercury transmit on and off without having to go into the settings menu?
Any help would be appreciated...I am enjoying a lot of the controls that are in speedgrade but there are some workflow hurdles that I need to get over in order to be able to use effectively in client sessions from time to time.
    Thanks!

I waited expectantly and patiently  for Adobe to enable Mercury Transmit  in SG and to be able to make use of my BM card and external monitor.
O.K we got it in CC2014.1...but it is either Mercury Transmit or  Dual Display!
I think this half-arsed solution  is an absolute fail that we cant use desktop and an  external monitor simultaneously.
Has anyone on the SG team actually been in a real world CC and Grade Suite?
At least we got consistency with the blue color scheme if not how Mercury Transmit works across the suite of apps.

  • 27 inch iMac for editing and After Effects

Hey everyone. I'm a student who does heavy video and After Effects work. Right now my core 2 duo macbook pro is not cutting it when it comes to performance and render times.
Luckily, my budget is around $2200-2300 thanks to money I should have leftover from my college fund (thank you, mom and dad).
I was looking at the MacBook Pro 15 inch until I discovered the 27 inch imacs that are in the library multimedia center. The screen size is great because there's so much space to work with and details come out a lot clearer.
But from a hardware and price perspective, the 27inch imac with a quad core 3.1 ghz intel core i7, 1 tb hdd, and a 2gb AMD Radeon HD 6970m is around $100 LESS than the MacBook Pro with a quad core 2.4 ghz, 750 gb 5400 rpm, and 1 gb 6770m.
The only tradeoff is portability, but given the difference in spec, i'm starting to say its worth it.
I know that a lot of AE is dependant on CPU and lots of RAM per CPU. Upgrading to 16 gb of ram is getting cheaper and cheaper (it also helps that the imac has 4 ram slots). The iMac can actually support 32 gb of ram, so when that becomes available that is another nice plus.
So just doing the math, with 16 gb of ram that would be a 3.1 ghz quad core intel i7 with 4 gb of ram per core. 8gb of ram when upgraded to 32 gb of memory.
I'm not sure what Apple is gonna do with the next iMac refresh, so I will probably wait until then to make a decision.
Does anyone have experience with AE on the 27 inch iMac with similar specs?
    Many thanks,
    Dan.

Several other drawbacks to the iMac or any other all-in-one computer system:
    1) The GPU cannot be upgraded at all (at least not internally). In fact, iMacs cannot have their AMD (formerly ATi) GPUs disabled at all. And Premiere Pro CS5.x supports only NVIDIA CUDA GPUs for MPE GPU acceleration. (The current iMacs cannot be equipped at all with any GPU besides AMD/ATi.) Premiere Pro is thus forced to run in MPE software-only mode, which is much slower than with GPU acceleration.
    2) No iMac has any room at all whatsoever for more than one single fast internal hard drive. Unfortunately, the interface that the iMac employs, SATA, is only a half-duplex interface (which means that data transfers can only move in one direction at a time). But video editing requires a disk system that does simultaneous reads and writes - but with only one disk connected only by a half-duplex connection, the system must wait for a given block of read operations to be completed before any writes of a given data can even begin at all. This slows down overall editing and encoding performance substantially.
    3) Additional hard drives can be added externally - but the current external hard drive options available for the iMac are either very expensive or very slow. That's because the iMac has absolutely no USB 3.0 or eSATA capability whatsoever. The iMac has only USB 2.0 and Thunderbolt ports - but external Thunderbolt hard drives still cost nearly twice as much money per GB as other external hard drives, and USB 2.0 is limited in sequential transfers to only around 35 MB/s - far slower than the drives themselves are physically capable of (140 to 188 MB/s). Plus, of course, USB 2.0, like SATA, is only half duplex.

  • Internal and external DVD burner ?

Hi all, have a general question, currently have a HP ProBook 6455b, obviously has an internal DVD burner.. I am looking to add an external DVD burner...is this possible to run an internal and external at the same time? would I need additional burning software? Burning is quite slow takes over an hr to burn one DVD, currently using Windows DVD burner because it is simple and effective.. or should I just use another program that is quicker? any ideas or suggestions on fast burning programs? thanks you guys are the best!

    You're very welcome.
I have never burned a movie with mine but I have burned large 3+ GB ISO images using CD Burner XP, and it takes just a few minutes.
Now, if you mean can you insert a disk in one drive, and copy that disk via the other drive using the same program set to copy or grab disk, that should be possible.
It should show one drive as the one to copy from and one to copy to, just like if you had two DVD drives in a desktop PC.
If you are asking can you simultaneously burn two different files on two different burners using the same program at the same time, that I have no clue. I guess you would have to try it and find out.  You would open the program and burn one file to a disk and open the program again and burn another file to the other DVD burner. If the program won't let you open two instances of it at the same time, then you probably could open a different DVD burning program such as the one I posted above and use that to burn the other files with.

I have the exact same problem! I sent the discs into my local Apple Center so they could check the discs. A month later I get them back by mail and an e-mail that says "there is no problem with the discs, therefore it must be a problem with you system". Not very helpful, and it took forever before they got time to check the discs. Pretty ****** off by now...
EDIT: It is probably worth mentioning that I get an error when installing LiveType 1B at about 4% of installing, that says "there were errors installing, please try again". I am installing the LiveType content on my LaCie 250GB USB external hard drive, although I have already tried installing the content on the built in hard drive as well..

  • Using External Effects with Logic

I'm about to purchase Logic 9, and also need an Audio Interface.
I've got a Korg MicroKorg, which I intend to line-in for its own synth functionality.  I also intend to use it as a midi control surface to use percussion, etc., in Logic.  How would this work with external effects?
If I create a drum track in Logic, I'd like to do things like run that track through pedals like an EHX Flanger Hoax (I realize sound quality may vary, given that this is a guitar effect).
How what I do that, and what would I need to look for in an Audio Interface to allow me to get the audio out of Logic, through the pedal, and back into Logic?
    Thx.

I think I understand you - you have a choice of Firewire or USB connected devices - Firewire devices are faster and generally more reliable and can handle a larger bandwidth, so if you're planning on recording numerous inputs, for example, this will matter. However, USB devices are pretty good on the whole - I'm using a simple Apogee One at the moment, which is perfectly adequate for my purposes, but my earlier point was that it obviously wouldn't be any good for using external effects since you're going to need to send a signal out from Logic (maybe via a Bus/Auxiliary) to your effects device and then return it back into Logic, so you need an interface with enough inputs and outputs to be able to do that. You might want to have other outboard gear permanently connected for convenience, so only you can work out how many inputs and outputs you'll need and obviously, the bigger the requirement, the more expensive it will be. You'll have to do some Googling to give you an idea - Apogee, Focusrite and MOTU are good starting points, in my opinion but there's a vast range (I'd avoid MAudio)
    http://www.google.co.uk/#hl=en&gs_nf=1&cp=22&gs_id=2g&xhr=t&q=audio+interfaces+f or+mac&pf=p&sclient=psy-ab&oq=audio+intefaces+for+ma&gs_l=&pbx=1&bav=on.2,or.r_g c.r_pw.r_qf.,cf.osb&fp=426f61de939593dc&biw=1231&bih=579
Another point I was trying to make earlier is that Logic includes such a large range of effects to choose from (the Pedalboard is an emulation of various fx pedals which you can swop around) that you may find you can get the kind of sounds you want 'in the box' - so that's well worth a try first.

  • Internal and external no ranges

what is the meaning of ilnternal and external no ranges, where we create internal and ordernal no ranges, can u give clear clarification

    hI
Internal Number Ranges: Doc. No will be provided by the system automatically in serial order allotting the next available progressive number. The number must be in numerical. We have to use the T.Code FBN1
External Number ranges: Doc. No will be given manually by the end user. System will not lock no automatically in this case. User can pick the number randomly. Number may be an alpha numeric.
IT IS LIKE VOUCHER NUMBER FOR ALL TRANSACTION
    FBN1
    Click on Execute Button
    Give Co. Code:
    Select Change Intervals
    Select insert interval button.
         Give No.     Year     From           To
    Select insert Enter.
    save
Here we create the number ranges for documents. For each number range you specify:
1.A number interval from which document numbers are selected
    2. the type of number assignment (internal or external)
You assign one or more document types to each number range. The number range becomes effective via the document type specified in document entry and posting.
Number ranges for documents are company code-dependent. We must therefore create your number ranges for each company code in which the document type is used, namely with the same number range key.
The number intervals must not overlap. If you use year-dependent number ranges, you can specify the same interval with the same key several times for different "to- fiscal years" (the limit up to which a number range is still valid).
If you want to define number ranges, which are independent of the to-fiscal year, enter 9999 in the to- fiscal year field.
For sample documents, use a number range with key X2,
For recurring entry documents with key X1.
These keys may not be used for other number ranges

  • External effects in Logic 8LE

Howdy folks. I am trying to get my external effects units (reverb, delay and such) working in Logic. My signal is hitting the effects units but I am unsuccessful when bussing it to the mains. I have tried every conceivable option. Also have used the I/O ulility which shuts down the signal to the effects even after choosing the correct ins and outs. What gives with this. Maybe someone can walk me through it and my Motu ultralite has all the necessary ins and outs etc and these effects are all hooked up correctly. Is there something missing in the manual? I am half way there, but it seems it is logic itself. Has there been only one update for Logic LE8 so far? Stumped!

Guys, you have to use Aux channels and insert I/O plug-in there. After inserting the plug-in, configure the send/return audio routing there. Output is the 'send' (corresponds to the output of the interface which is connected to the effect unit's input) and input is 'return' (return from the effect unit output connected to an input socket of the audio interface).
Configuration done, just use this Aux channel as a send effect on the mixer tracks.
Do this for every external effects unit. If there are 3 units, then 3 Aux channels should be created and configured this way.
Details: Chapter 25 "Mixing" -> Auxiliary channel -> Using Aux Channels for External Audio Processing (p. 593) of the LE8 Operation Manual

  • Single URL for internal and external CRM access when using IFD

    Hello,
At one of our client site I have setup IFD on CRM 2011. This IFD is behind TMG. My client is a big corporation therefore all CRM components including CRM, ADFS and SQL are on separate servers.
I have configured IFD using single url https://orgname.contoso.com Their IT staff wants to know why can't they use single URL for internal and external access where internal users are nto prompted for authentication
when logging on to the CRM server. I know you can do URL re-write in ADFS but they want to know the reason "why internal users can't use the same IFD URL and don't get prompted for their credentials". Text below is from their IT staff.

There are several approaches to your question.  You need to set up both an internal and an external relying party trust. If you use the external URL, it will always direct you to the signin page, if you use the internal URL, it will resolve you single
    sign on.
I've configured IFD for CRM multiple times, and this is how it works. CRM looks at the URL. If you use the external URL (org.domain.com), it will prompt for credentials. So what you are asking for, a single URL that works single sign on internally and prompts
    externally really isn't possible.
    What I recommend is:
    1. make the external URL available internally
    2. Configure all outlook clients against the external URL, that way you won't have to reconfigure when someone goes internal to external
    3. Have users who are primarily internal use the internal URL for the web client, which will resolve single sign on
    4. Have users who are primarily external use the external URL for the web client
For #1, since you only need to enter the credentials when you first configure CRM, it is in all effects single sign on.
One thing I haven't tried that may work is using IIS redirect internally to redirect the external URL to the internal URL. There is also a powershell script in the IFD guide that you can use to make the outlook client switch between the internal and external
URL's, but nothing that will give you a single URL that works as the internal relying party trust when internal and the external relying party trust when you are external.

The wire looks intertwined in smaller branches and a larger branch leaning heavily on it making like a v effect.  This would cause noise frequency and an intermmittent connection according to what I read online. Accordingly any weight on a cable wire would cause for an signal interference. The area was affected by several outages in the last 2 weeks, which appeared to be resolved, one which was a lightning strike on one of the Nodes. I believe there still be something wrong because others in the area are getting intermittency and weak signals at certain times and not others.  Since I use the internet for work purposes I need the connection to provide over 100mbps of download at least 99 percent of the time. This is what I am paying for. I am getting 30 at times and 100 at others causing it to be difficult to do my job.  I have had the service checked several times and they keep reporting yellow signal of high noise frequency comming to the co-axle from somewhere. There were not able to pin point it, but the large tree branch may be the issue.  After speaking to several reps. over the last 2 weeks and reporting the need to free the drop wire from the tree branch at least a dozen times to reps in technical support, I found out yesterday that there is no NOTES taken anywhere on the account reporting a tree branch issue. This convinced me that comcast is falsifying/modifying the support call notes for some reason. In fact since the 29th of July when a technician took pictures of the issue and allegedly reported this to maintenance, NOTHING has been done about the tree branch or the latency and intermittent connection I still have.  I also had a major CREEPY experience with the technician that came out here that day.  I now have an appointment for Monday which was rescheduled again from Thursday without notice and I waited hour on Thursday for someone to show up, but no one did and they rescheduled it until Monday without an explanation. Supervisor said it might be because they needed a bigger team to come out on Monday. If this is not taken care of on Monday Corporate will be hearing more of me.
