Launchd doesn't launch script on time
I have a launchd configuration file that uses StartCalendarInterval to start an script at a given time (1 minute after midnight). Everything seems to work on my Mac Pro workstation, but on a Mac Mini web server (no keyboard, mouse, or monitor; firewall turned on; very quiet test network) launchd doesn't get around to running the program until very late -- today it was 5 hours late!
Does anyone know why launchd would be so late at running a program? Is this a known possibility?
The most obvious question is whether the clock on the system is correct or not?
Second to that, what do the logs say? Did it try to launch at the correct time but some other factor stalled it for 5 hours? Or did it not launch at all?
Third, what does the script do and how are you determining that it's running 5 hours late? In other words, if you're basing your 'late' statement on some action the script takes (e.g. emailing results, writing a file, etc.) then have you checked that there's not some earlier process that's taking 5 hours to execute and that's the cause of the delay, rather than launchd not executing the script on schedule?
The logs, especially /var/log/system.log, should help determine these answers.

Application started using Java Web Start doesn't launch the first time
I have a Facebook photo uploader application that I plan to distribute using Java Web Start. I'm using Java 6u4 on Windows XP SP2 with 2GB of RAM. I have Java 6u3, Java 6u4 and Java 5 u14 installed and I'm sure the one used is Java 6u4.
I signed my application and make use of all security settings.
Here is my JNLP file:

</jnlp>Here is the link for my application http://antaki.ca/bloom/Bloom.jnlp
The first time the application is installed using a link on the browser it's downloaded then the certificate dialog is shown, after that I check the checkbox to accept the certificate permanently. The application doesn't load, it only loads the second time although I see it in the task manager. If I don't accept the certificate permanently it does load. This happens on both Firefox 2 and IE 7. I enabled the console and logging but nothing shows up there. That's really a weird problem, I wonder if Java Web Start is a viable deployment option, it does have great capabilities such as autoupdate but still seems to have important bugs.
Does anyone have any clue about what is going on.
The problem doesn't occur on Ubuntu 7.10.
Thanks,
Carl Antaki>
You were right my XML file was not correct. I still couldn't find a valid JNLP validator. Sun has to provide that.>No they don't (have to supply a validator for their own document type, though it makes sense to do so), but yes they do (provide a tool that validates XML against schemas). Java can validate XML against a DTD or XSD.
Check these two threads (and chase the links) for more details.
JNLP xsd schema

Validate XML against DTD? XSD OK. SSCCE.
<http://groups.google.com.au/group/comp.lang.java.programmer/browse_thread/thread/5b997a1edb765b11/e831f3066eb4aa38>
Look especially for the posts by Piotr Kobzda.
I had a tool on my site based largely on Piotr's codes, that linked to a valid JNLP DTD and XSD, but unfortunately my site is offline at the moment. Andy assures me that the JNLP 6.0 DTD has been corrected for the developer ..download tutorials of web start, though the online (web site) version may still be invalid. -

As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there? -
I recently installed all the of CC 2014 applications and noticed that in Photoshop CC 2014, when I choose the "Browse in Bridge" menu option it doesn't launch Bridge at all. Instead it opens the Creative Cloud desktop application window instead. I have the latest version of Bridge installed as well. If I have Bridge running, the menu option also just opens the CC window and doesn't bring Bridge to the front either. I have PS installed on both a Mac (10.9.3) and Windows (8.1) and the behaviour is the same.
I only Run windows and my install of CC 2014 works correctly and launches Bridge CC. Bridge CC was also updated to launch CC 2014 and not CC 14.2.1.
Hers is my Photoshop CC 2014 help>System info... You may want to compare your windows systems CC 2014 info to it.

Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional cannot be launched at this time.
Hi
So i've trying to deploy CS3 Design Standard in our enterprise environment. And one of the deployments, requires that i have to deploy ONLY the Adobe Acrobat Professional component of the CS3 package.
I run the install, and untick Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign etc......so JUST leaving Adobe Acrobat Professional. It installs fine, along with the Shared Components etc.
But when i run Adobe Acrobat Professional, it pops up saying:-
Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional cannot be launched at this time. You must launch at least one other suite component (such as Adobe Photoshop) before launching Acrobat 8 Professional.
Now, as you can see i can't launch another suite component, as i've chosen not to install them. I'm assuming this is required so it can "register" itself. If this is working "by-design" then why does it let me install Adobe Acrobat Professional by itself, if i can't run it????Simon = The rest of the CS3 package works great in a ThinApp package, doesn't seem to be any performance difference between install types. Plus you have the advantage of no extra registry keys or dll's floating into your system.
Peter = Thanks for the helpful comment, really helps me with this issue. And how is my installation of the product not "as designed".
Adobe give you the option of JUST installing Adobe Acrobat Professional, so if they allow this, surely it's BY DESIGN! The fact it doesn't work by itself means that Adobe should change their design to state the fact you need to install another suite product to allow it to work.
I've also tried packaging a standalone copy of Acrobat Reader Professional using VMWare ThinApp, but it does not work. And i've no problem with this, theres no real way to virtualize a device (i.e the Adobe PDF printer) so i'm fine with that. -
Spotlight doesn't launch on login
I'm having trouble with Spotlight, it doesn't launch when I log in. I can open it manually, so to speak, but I can't get it to launch automatically.
As suggested by V.K., I've tried these commands, but it didn't solve the problem:
sudo mdutil -i off /
sudo mdutil -E /
sudo mdutil -i on /
Any ideas? You could try the old standby "repair permissions" if something is wrong here that effects launchd (which keeps spotlight and many other things running) this could fix it. A test would be to use activity monitor to kill the "Spotlight" process (after you manually start it) and see if it restarts on its own within a few seconds. If not, launchd is not doing it's job which actually seems certain already.
It seems drastic, but if this fails, I would recommend doing an re-install of the OS with the archive and install method. I say this because clearly something is not right in the OS startup procedure (specifically launchd). If this is true, other things not as noticeable could be wrong as well.
This works better than it did with older systems and should successfully move all parts of most installed apps, all your data etc to the new system. Apps that install kernel extensions in /System (parallels, cisco VPN client, others) would need a re-install. unix command line apps are ignored too.
once you verify everything is is and running and your data is all there, etc, you can safely remove the "Previous Systems" folder this process will create. -
my mail app doesn't launch
using LionLaunch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Step 2
Still in the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the process. The report name starts with the name of the crashed process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful. -
Here's what I get anytime I want to start Acrobat 8 (it's a part of Design Suite).
"Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional cannot be launched at this time. You must launch at least one other suite component (such as Adobe Photoshop) before launching Acrobat 8 Professional."
Launching Photoshop or Flash doesn't help...When you launch some other part of the suite, do you also go through the steps to complete the online activation?
Also, Since this is a USER TO USER forum, not Adobe support, you
may need to contact Adobe for help

My InDesign cs4 doesn't launch.
I bought cs4 master collection and other programs are working fine, but for some reason InDesign seems to fail in launching, meaning, when I click the InDesign icon, it always shows this alert meesge: "Do you want to allow following programs to make changes?" and when I click "Yes" sometimes nothing happns and sometimes the programs starts but in really slow way and the program window is always in a weird position (sometimes in the upper corner with small window size). I'm very frustrated each time I use InDesign. First of all, why only InDesign gets this alert message??? Is it defective product???
Please help!!!What is your operating system?
What is the FULL TEXT of the message about making changes?
Do oyou see the splash screen? If so, what is the last message displayed at the bottom of the screen before the crash? -
Batch monitor doesn't launch and doesn't exist at all :(
Hi,
I desperately need your help.
My problems started a couple of months ago when a less than 2-hour project in Final Cut was converted by compressor into a 6-gig file.
Following basic troubleshooting steps described in FAQ, I deleted user preferences and the program went back to normal.
Yesterday my 1 hour and 30 minutes project was converted into 5 gig file. My troubles started all over again. This time I also tried to delete user preferences but now it DIN"T WORK.
I decided to remove and reinstall compressor and Qmaster following by the steps described at
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1888?viewlocale=en_US
All went well, BUT now when I export my project using compressor, batch monitor doesn't launch! And when I look into Applications->Utilities I don't SEE THE BATCH MONITOR program at all!
Maybe I have not installed the entire thing necessary for normal performance of the compressor application? (when I reinstalled compressor, I checked Compressor and Qmaster boxes only, and unchecked final cut pro, DVD studio pro and the rest of the applications I did not need to reinstall)
Please advise.
Regards,
Tatiana
P.S. I'm using FCP 5.0 not the newest FCP studio 2.0Thank you for your reply!
Still trying to figure out what's going on.
I checked the option it IS on. Thank you for your suggestion, though.
Regarding Batch Monitor as a separate program, yes I know that I should look for it in the UTILITIES folder. But it is NOT THERE! How can it be possible if I reinstalled Compressor AND Apple Qmaster?
Any thoughts?
Maybe I did or did not delete some file(s) before the reinstallation? What should have I done before plugging in the installation dvd with the Final Cut Pro 5.0? I followed all steps described in the basic troubleshooting section on the Apple web site. Ironically, I got into even more trouble
I appreciate your help.

Export Movie doesn't launch AME !
Hi there.
I'm very used to work with Premiere Pro CS4, After Effects CS4 and all Adobe package.
Now I'm having for the 1st time an issue while trying to export my movie from Adobe PRemiere.
Doing all default actions, I go to : File > Export > Movie.
But AME just doesn't launch. I got the Upper Menu "File" button highlighted, and that's all.
What is going on? I have to delivery a company movie project, my all movie has just 8 minutes, all things set up.
Thanks!!!
Using PREMIERE PRO CS4
MacBook
Model Identifier: MacBook4,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.4 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 3 MB
Memory: 4 GB
Bus Speed: 800 MHzIt's not working yet.
I habe Premiere and Media Encoder launched.
Then I go to File>Export>Media on Premiere and nothing happens...
I didn't get what you said about 'pointing to my my Project>Sequence'.
Is there a way to "force" adobe premiere to export this file? I'm really in trouble if it doesn't works!
This is a shoot screen of Encoder. Nothing happens...
And this is Premiere...see the Menu? It gets like this, and absolutely nothing happens... -
Finder doesn't launch properly
My finder doesn't launch properly and does not respond each time I start up my mac. I can't seem to click on anything. I'm still able to open applications like iTunes but my computer will just keep bonging after i've done so. The problem will resolve after I relaunch my finder. Although this may seem like a small matter, the problem keeps coming back as and when I'm using the computer. This started only after updating the system to 10.5.8, when my screen only showed a grey screen post-installaion. I had to off the mac maunally by holding on the power button. I've updated the system to 10.6, but that wouldn't solve the problem.
Utility check is fine.
Will someone please help me? This is the first mac that i have, and i've just converted from windows, having given up hope on it.I'm leaning towards backing up your data, erase the disk, and reinstall SL. There appears to be a system-wide problem that has hung around from your previous system. Trying to hunt down the problem will likely take longer than doing the erase and install and re-importing your data.

After the last update (10.0.7), Logic Pro X doesn't launch.
First, it shows this window:
Whatever I choose, then the application doesn't respond anymore. It seems active in the Dock, but nothing works. I tried to reset all the preferences (Preferences > Initialize all Except Keys Commands), then it work the first time, then nothing.
There is a single way to work with the application: ctrl-click on a logic document and choose "Open".
I installed the trial version of Final Cut Pro, could this be the cause of the problem?
Thanks,
MattEriksimon, the problem is that Logic doesn't really start: here what I see in the Menu bar. There's no File menu available.
I never had any problem before. -
Launchd isn't launching my app
I used Lingon to create this plist file, but launchd is never launching the application. The intent of the StartCalendarInterval specification is to have it run every hour, on the hour. Activity Monitor shows that launchd is active, and running as "root". My own user is the owner of the .app file (and every other .app file, for that matter).
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">

<key>RunAtLoad</key>
<false/>
<key>StartCalendarInterval</key>
<dict>
<key>Minute</key>
<integer>0</integer>

</dict>
</plist>
Thanks in advance for any ideas,
MarkEvery hour on the hour, I want the app to START, execute, and then STOP (go to end of task). I do not want it to be running (or idling) constantly in the background. Please tell me how making it a login item is going to accomplish that.
Think of Time Machine backups for something that works the same way that I want my app to. Time Machine is not a login item.
The way I did this years ago in Unix was to use the "cron" subsystem, but Apple documentation says that cron has been deprecated in favor of launchd.
P.S. Looking at the system .plist files, lots of apps are being launched this way, by vendors such as Google and Oracle. -

Try:
- Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
- Restore from backup. See:
