Left pane (with TOC, Search, ect) is collapsed in .CHM

This works fine when I am viewing the .chm just after
creating it in RH. But when I copy to a different location (like a
desktop), or open from within the software app, the contents pane
is not visible unless you drag the divider to expand it.
Does anyone know how to fix this so that the TOC always
appears? Not very intuitive for users the way it is.
Leisa

Hi, Leisa,
You may need to check the properties of your help window in
RoboHelp and adjust the width of the navigation pane. There's an
option to specify the pane width as a pixel value.
Windows keeps a record of the most recent dimensions of a
help window whenever you close it, which may explain why it looks
OK in some circumstances; the size of the adjusted navigation pane
is simply being remembered when you next open the help file. You
should be able to verify this by renaming or deleting the
hh.dat file in the following hidden folder:
%UserProfile%\Application Data\Microsoft\HTML Help
For example:
C:\Documents and Settings\Leisa\Application Data\Microsoft\HTML
Help
Among other things, the
hh.dat file stores information on the most recent size and
position of every help window that you've opened on the computer.
So, by renaming the file and forcing Windows to create a new
version of it, you can restore all the help files to their
original, as-first-viewed state.

  • Left Pane Not Opening in Explorer

Good Day, The left pane (Contents/Index/Search/Glossary) of
my help chm does not open on many Microsoft 2000 systems in

displays correctly thereafter. I am using X5. Would appreciate any
    suggestions. Thanks. Rod

  • RH8 - TOC books won't collapse in output and search not working

I'm working on a RH8 project with a second author. When I last generated the primary layout (Webhelp),
I noticed that the TOC books will not collapse in the generated output.  Also, the Search feature is not
working (Search field is not displaying).  (See ATTACHED IMAGES)
Is there something in the Project Settings that could be causing this?  I am wondering if we somehow
checked a setting that would force the TOC to stay open in the generated output?
Also, I notice that the Search area seems to be displaying some index items and numbers?
Anyone have any trouble-shooting ideas?   I do know that when you initially setup or open a new
RH Project, you have to go through a series of dialogue boxes with various settings.  However, when
you go to Project Settings, you don't see all of those settings...  so I'm not sure where to trouble-shoot this...
    Any suggestions welcome - thanks!

  • TOC/Search window not displayed in WebHelp Pro output

    Robohelp10, WebHelp Pro -
I've got what I have to think is pretty fundamental question: When I generate my WebHelp Pro project, everything works perfectly until I move the contents of the output folder to a network drive for viewing. When the default topic opens, rather than displaying the TOC/Search window on the left, I'm getting a link that says "Show". Click that link, and the TOC opens right up.
I would like to have the TOC displayed on that initial view, without requiring users to click the "Show" link.
Again, when I view the results of the output on my local drive, the TOC is displayed. The obvious problem is, the generated help needs to reside on a network drive to be accessed by our users...
PS: The project is on my local drive, only the contents of the output folder are being moved to the network drive. Also, everything other than the TOC display seems to be working fine.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Larry, Rick has solved your conditional build issue. However, do check to make sure you have all the updates installed for RoboHelp 10.
WebHelp issues in RoboHelp versions 10 and 11
I notice you are using IE. Does the Show link occur with Chrome or Firefox as well?
Meanwhile, I'm still suspect that you are not opening the correct "default" start page file to launch the WebHelp and that's why you're getting that "Show" link. This is "tell-tale" that you are opening the default topic file instead of the default Start Page. By chance have you somehow named your "default topic", index.html? If so, this is not correct.

  • Japanese characters in left pane

I have a project that has been translated into Japanese, and
the left pane of my FlashHelp system does not render the characters
correctly. The funny thing is that I got it to work in another
project that was translated, one that I think was built in X5 (or
possibly earlier) and has a skin that RoboHelp says should be
updated when I generate the output. I don't dare change it now, and
    it seems to work fine.
Unfortunately, I didn't make a record of exactly how I got
    that to work
, but I seem to remember it had to do with embedding
Japanese characters in the Flash skin files. Fonts are also
declared in the skin .fhs file and the accompanying XML file, and
I'm not sure how they interact, but it seems that the fonts in the
Flash files supercede those in the skin file.
In my newer project, the toolbar buttons show up in Japanese,
as do the "terms" and "definitions" headings in the glossary and
the index keyword prompt. It's the TOC entries, glossary terms, and
index terms that have the problem, and they are all driven by the
file skin_textnode.swf. As long as the other files are set to Arial
or Arial Unicode MS in Flash, they display Japanese correctly, even
if Japanese isn't embedded (using "anti-alias for animation").
Without Japanese embedded in skin_textnode.fla, I get this kind of
    nonsense in the left pane:
    検索する.
But with Japanese embedded, I get symbols like paragraph symbols,
plus-or-minus signs, and daggers. I have also saved the .hhc file
(the TOC) and the .hhk (index) in UTF-8 format using Notepad, but
no change there. The junk characters also show up in the overlaying
window when clicking a term in the index, and that's driven by
skin_index.fla. I've tried the font and character embedding with
that file. I have tried changing "font-family:Arial" in the skin
file to both "font:"Arial Unicode MS"" and "font:"Arial"". No
    difference.
I have compared files with that earlier project. As far as I
can tell, I have done things comparably, but the junk characters
persist in the left pane. It doesn't appear that there are
substantial differences between the way the old and new skins are
executed to cause the Japanese to work in one and not the other.
Any ideas that may help me make this work again? I'm using RoboHelp
6, Windows XP SP2, IE 6. (In theory, making this work for Japanese
will also solve my problem for Russian. I'm hoping the language
capabilities of RH7 handle all of this better so I don't have to
use these work-arounds for non-Roman characters.)
I know this is a load of information, but I've tried to
describe the circumstances adequately without writing the great
American novel. I'll clarify anything that's needed. Thanks,
    Ben

Solved: I found once more that the TOC, glossary, and index
information is pulled from files in the whxdata folder:
    whtdata...xml, whgdata...xml, and whidata...xml, respectively,
which are all in UTF-8 format. The Japanese characters have to be
changed in these files, but they get overwritten during a build, so
they have to be stored with the correct characters in another
location. Fortunately, our glossary will probably not be changing,
but the TOC and index will grow as the project moves forward, so
    this will take some babysitting.
This all leads me to wonder why RoboHelp generates copies of
the .glo, .hhk, and .hhc files into the output folder when it's the
XML files that are used instead...

  • Bug - View changes to grid when expanding a collection in the left pane.

Tried submitting this via the bug report form but got java errors. Sigh...
This seemed like the best alternative.
    ******BUG******
    Concise problem statement:
View changes to grid when expanding a collection in the left pane.
    Steps to reproduce bug:
    1. Goto Library Module
    2. Ensure there is a collection with at least one child - if not create one.
    3. Make sure the collection is collapsed (you cant see the child and you see a right pointing triangle to the left of the collection name)
    4. Change to Loupe view
    5. Click the right pointing triangle next to the parent collection you just created to expand it.
    Actual Results:
    View changes to grid
    Expected results:
View should remain unchanged - in this case Loupe view.

The first is that I can't view the aperture library anymore directly from iphoto.
THat is exceeding strange since iPhoto '08 could not open or share an Aperture library - that ability was first introduced in iPhoto '11 - with the latest version of iPhoto and or Aperture you can open the same library with either application - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5043
In the current version of iPhoto the photos are sorted by date in the film strip - I've not recently done a calendar so do not remember the specifics -

  • How to place Forward and Back button in left pane of WebHelp?

Along with buttons for Contents, Index, Search, and Glossary, I want to put buttons for Forward and Back in the left pane of my WebHelp. These buttons appear automatically on the WebHelp Skin Editor dialog box in an earlier version of RoboHelp, but in RoboHelp HTML 10, they do not appear. What do I have to do to enable them? I see there was another article about this on the RoboHelp forum, but I really don't understand what it's telling me to do.

  • If i factory reset my ipod touch(5th gen), can i reset it as the option 'set up as new ipod', and then i can just go into the app store/itunes store and restore my music and apps and not icloud with photos and ect?

if i factory reset my ipod touch(5th gen), can i reset it to the option 'set up as a new ipod', and then i can just go into the app store/itunes store and log into my apple ID so i can just restore my music and apps and not icloud with photos, contacts, ect. and then later i can add contacts that i need/want instead of them restoring them from icloud?
The reason i asked this question is because i have been wondering this a lot ever since i got an exchange on this ipod (and ive only had it for a few weeks now) because my last ipod had a lot of problems. so after i restored my ipod with my computer/itunes, i downloaded apps that i wanted, and then when i went to the storage to see how much storage was left, it said 0 bytes. i was freaking out because i didnt know how that could be, i mean, cause like, that is impossible when i just 'purchased' it, that the space was full but i looked and all my pictures were on this ipod and i already put them on my computer so i dont need them anymore thats why i wanna reset it now so there is nothing on it so i can have more space for stuff to do and download on it.
it is updated to iOS 8 but that happened when i purchased it, so i didnt have a choice to update it even though i didnt want to update to iOS 8...
and i hope you understand my problem..
i would REALLY REALLY appreciate it if someone could tell me a solution to my problem!!! thank you so much!
    -sierra

Hey Sierra, You can do just what you have stated. My question, what is your "other"? If it is over 1.5 GB you most likely have corrupt files. Doing a Restore to New, Factory restore should correct it. Just make sure you make a full backup of all information on your iPod to your computer before you restore, so you don't lose your stuff, contacts, videos, pictures, non-iTunes music, etc, use the cable and connect with your computer. Then, via cable, connect to your computer, run the Restore to new, don't use your backup. Treat this iPod as if it was your first one ever. When restore is done, set up and add what info you wish to install on this iPod. The music apps etc you purchased should be on your computer, if not you should be able to retrieve purchased apps and music from iTunes. Any music, videos, apps not purchased from iTunes will be lost to you if you do not save them to your computer or the cloud first. When your done, make a current Backup and you should good to go. Hope this helps. Good luck. Cheers.

  • Firefox always opens with the "search" tab even though I don't want it. How do I stop this?

When I open Firefox, it opens normally to my home page. But it also opens with the "search" tab, though I don't want it. How do I prevent this?

From the search page offered go to your chosen home page. Now move the mouse to the top left and scan the options for view, Toolbars and make sure that the "Menu bar" is ticked. This will show the File, Edit, View, History, Bookmarks and tools options plus Help. Click on tools, then Options and select current page as your home page. All should now be sorted.

It looks like that the installation process of one of the applications have caused some trouble. One of them may have changed or added kext files.
For that, the Window server crashed if you try to open a non Apple application like Firefox
Start the system in safe mode by holding the shift key on power on.
If save mode is reached, perform a permissions repair with the Disk Utility.
Don't bother about upcoming warnings like "could not repair file xy" as that occur cause you use the tool on a running system and opened files can not get touched by the tool.
After repair is done reboot system to normal and try to open Firefox.
If the problem persits, please report back here.

  • What is the library section in the bookmarks toolbar used for now. I used to be able to organize my bookmarks here now the left pane in library under organize bookmarks is always empty.

Used to be able to organize bookmarks in the library section (left pane) but since upgrade this pane is always empty even if i try to add a folder or bookmark. Is there another way to organize without having to do this in the library section.

This can be a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

  • Yosemite update left me with white screen.  How do I recover?

Yosemite update from App Store has left me with a white screen and I can do nothing!  How do I recover or complete installation?

Take each of these steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved.
To restart an unresponsive computer, press and hold the power button for a few seconds until the power shuts off, then release, wait a few more seconds, and press it again briefly.
    Step 1
The first step in dealing with a startup failure is to secure the data. If you want to preserve the contents of the startup drive, and you don't already have at least one current backup, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data that has changed since the last backup, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to start. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
    a. Start up from the Recovery partition, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) When the OS X Utilities screen appears, launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.” The article refers to starting up from a DVD, but the procedure in Recovery mode is the same. You don't need a DVD if you're running OS X 10.7 or later.
    b. If Step 1a fails because of disk errors, and no other Mac is available, then you may be able to salvage some of your files by copying them in the Finder. If you already have an external drive with OS X installed, start up from it. Otherwise, if you have Internet access, follow the instructions on this page to prepare the external drive and install OS X on it. You'll use the Recovery installer, rather than downloading it from the App Store.
    c. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, start the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
    d. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
    Step 2
If the startup process stops at a blank gray screen with no Apple logo or spinning "daisy wheel," then the startup volume may be full. If you had previously seen warnings of low disk space, this is almost certainly the case. You might be able to start up in safe mode even though you can't start up normally. Otherwise, start up from an external drive, or else use the technique in Step 1b, 1c, or 1d to mount the internal drive and delete some files. According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation.
    Step 3
Sometimes a startup failure can be resolved by resetting the NVRAM.
    Step 4
If a desktop Mac hangs at a plain gray screen with a movable cursor, the keyboard may not be recognized. Press and hold the button on the side of an Apple wireless keyboard to make it discoverable. If need be, replace or recharge the batteries. If you're using a USB keyboard connected to a hub, connect it to a built-in port.
    Step 5
If there's a built-in optical drive, a disc may be stuck in it. Follow these instructions to eject it.
    Step 6
Press and hold the power button until the power shuts off. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to start up, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Use a different keyboard and/or mouse, if those devices are wired. If you can start up now, one of the devices you disconnected, or a combination of them, is causing the problem. Finding out which one is a process of elimination.
    Step 7
If you've started from an external storage device, make sure that the internal startup volume is selected in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.
Start up in safe mode. Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know the login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
When you start up in safe mode, it's normal to see a dark gray progress bar on a light gray background. If the progress bar gets stuck for more than a few minutes, or if the system shuts down automatically while the progress bar is displayed, the startup volume is corrupt and the drive is probably malfunctioning. In that case, go to Step 11. If you ever have another problem with the drive, replace it immediately.
If you can start and log in in safe mode, empty the Trash, and then open the Finder Info window on the startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) Check that you have at least 9 GB of available space, as shown in the window. If you don't, copy as many files as necessary to another volume (not another folder on the same volume) and delete the originals. Deletion isn't complete until you empty the Trash again. Do this until the available space is more than 9 GB. Then restart as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)
If the startup process hangs again, the problem is likely caused by a third-party system modification that you installed. Post for further instructions.
    Step 8
Launch Disk Utility in Recovery mode (see Step 1.) Select the startup volume, then run Repair Disk. If any problems are found, repeat until clear. If Disk Utility reports that the volume can't be repaired, the drive has malfunctioned and should be replaced. You might choose to tolerate one such malfunction in the life of the drive. In that case, erase the volume and restore from a backup. If the same thing ever happens again, replace the drive immediately.
This is one of the rare situations in which you should also run Repair Permissions, ignoring the false warnings it may produce. Look for the line "Permissions repair complete" at the end of the output. Then restart as usual.
    Step 9
If the startup device is an aftermarket SSD, it may need a firmware update and/or a forced "garbage collection." Instructions for doing this with a Crucial-branded SSD were posted here. Some of those instructions may apply to other brands of SSD, but you should check with the vendor's tech support.
    Step 10
Reinstall the OS. If the Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
    Step 11
Do as in Step 9, but this time erase the startup volume in Disk Utility before installing. The system should automatically restart into the Setup Assistant. Follow the prompts to transfer the data from a Time Machine or other backup.
    Step 12
This step applies only to models that have a logic-board ("PRAM") battery: all Mac Pro's and some others (not current models.) Both desktop and portable Macs used to have such a battery. The logic-board battery, if there is one, is separate from the main battery of a portable. A dead logic-board battery can cause a startup failure. Typically the failure will be preceded by loss of the settings for the startup disk and system clock. See the user manual for replacement instructions. You may have to take the machine to a service provider to have the battery replaced.
    Step 13
If you get this far, you're probably dealing with a hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
