Leopard Lockup

Since upgrading to Leopard I've had nothing but problems with my computer locking up. It most often happens when the screen saver runs, but not exclusively. It also happens a lot when running iTunes. The error I get when I restart (after a hard shut-down) is some kind of kernel error.
The latest lockup happened when I was running the latest software update to Leopard. The files downloaded and I was told to restart my computer. It got about halfway through installation and locked up. I was (as I always am) forced to shut the computer off... never a good feeling there. Now, I can't even get past the grey screen with the rotating circle.
Leopard locks up EVERY DAY!! I'm completely frustrated at this point...ready to throw in the towel and go back to Tiger. If anyone has any suggestions I would love to hear them.
Thanks!

I ended up having to boot up using the install DVD, then did a full restore from Time Machine. Fortunately I had just backed up everything on the 12th.
I suspect my lockup problems may be more related to my memory. I had installed 2G of memory from 3rd party (Crucial) about 3 months before Leopard came out. I didn't have problems on Tiger, but Leopard must not like that memory because it's been locking up ever since.
I'm now back to the original 512M RAM that came with the computer to see if that doesn't do the trick. Regardless, I'm not going to install 10.5.2 again until Apple gets these problems fixed, and I'm still tempted to go back to Tiger.
I agree... this is the first problem I've had with any of my Macs in over 10 years.

Why does IPhoto completely lock up my Intel Core Duo ?  IPhoto seems to work OK until I try to edit a phot, then get visual artifacts on the screen and computer is completely locked up after 8 hours.
Snow Leopard 10.6.8 with IPhoto 9.2.3.

Create a new account (systempreferences -> accounts) make a new Library, import some shots and see if the problem is repeated there.

  • MBP experiencing lockups - urgent help!

    Hi,
Im a desperate. On a photography commission in Bulgaria, and my MBP is experiencing crippling lockups, I'm a long way from any apple shop and I need the laptop for the job, if i cant sort it out soon ill lose the client, having paid for an expensive wasted trip!
Have apple care, but seems i can only contact by phone? which is going to be very costly from my mobile. Any email?
    Symptoms:
Mac starts up fine, get to login screen within 50-seconds, and for the first minute of so, it operates as expected. After a minute or so, the system locks up, spinning beach-ball, no response to clicking, force quit shortcut, all i can do is shutdown by holding the on/off button.
Lockups' seem to last about 5min, with 10-20 seconds of perfectly normal operation between them.
Lockups occur on login screen, if i don't login immediately.
Lockups timed to start at 2min (+/-10sec) from first pressing on/off switch.
When initiating file transfers (eg backing up docs to USB stick), transfers progress normally during the intervals when lockups occur, progress bar does not move during lockups.
Lockups sometimes stop clock and battery status from changing (eg top menu frozen)
During lockups there is minimal disk activity, just a short pulse of clicks every 40sec or so.
CPU fan is (quiet) off, or running slowly during lockups.
Checking process in Activity Monitor: free ram = 3.2gb, processor running at 5%, virtual memory usage is 140gb not sure if this is normal? the only high resource process running is kernel_task (PiD 0, root, 1.7%, 63tds, 180/123mb), 60gb free disk space (trash empty).
    My Mac:
Mac Book Pro 15" - 2.8ghz 4gbRAM - the first 'unibody' version running Snow Leopard - Downloaded and installed all recommended software updates in mid November.
    How it happened:
Computer was put to sleep by closing the lid, with a movie (.AVI) still playing, in QuicktimeX, upon wake the next day, I closed QT and shortly afterwards started experiencing the 'lock-ups' . The laptop has not suffered any nocks or bumps in the last week, nor have I downloaded anything or used any risky websites.
    So far i have tried:
Starting, loading movie and quitting QT
Checking hardware in system profiler, all reads normal / ok etc including RAM.
    Checking disks in disk utility.
Swapping between high and low power GPU's
    Reset PR RAM
    Remove replace battery & power
Start in safe mode - does not work (progress bar not move for 10 min)

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
There does seem to be contact information for Bulgaria:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57
They might be able to direct you to an AASP if necessary.
Do you have your system discs with you? If so, you could boot from your install disc and repair your boot disk and see if this helps. You could also try trashing your Quicktime and reinstalling it, since it seems to be at the root of your problems.
You could also try running the extended version of the Apple Hardware test.
A Safe Boot is what I would have recommended, since it disables your start up items, but it sounds like you are not able to do a Safe Boot. It may be worth going to Accounts>Log in Items and remove anything listed as a log-in item. You could have a problem with a log in item that has somehow gotten corrupted.
You could also try creating a new user account and see if the problems persist in the new account. If not, you have a software problem in your usual account.
You could have something like a dying hard drive. Open Disk Utility and check to see if SMART is verified.
These are just a few general things to try--I really don't know what is going on with your Mac, but hope that this will a least be a start in finding the cause of your troubles.
    Good luck!

  • G5 dual 2 Ghz freezing up with Leopard

I have had a problem with this mac freezing up, applications that are launching cannot be quit and often even a three finger quit yeilds no dialogue box. The only way out after 7 or 8 minutes of nothing is to power down using the front fascia switch, something i am very loathe to do and is now one of the most normal ways to get any sense.
I now have an idea what is happening. I have 2 Iomega Ultramax drives, one is 1TB and i bought for time vault. Originally i was running the two drives daisy-chained through FW800 but recently the older 650gb drive has a tendency of leaving the desktop and on restart only the 1Tb was mounting on the desktop. After a call to Iomega they say daisy-chaining is not supported although they were unable to say why it had been working up to this point for a few weeks.
Anyhow I took the older drive and connected through a USB hub via USB 2 rather than firewire 800. This improved the mountin issue and the drive mounts but after a few minutes operation applications still freeze and if i try to open this drive i get a SPOD whilst it fails to open the drive in finder.
On this basis I have found that in this terminal state of hanging by powering down the 650mb drive although giving me a slap on the wrist warning, breaks the hang and applications that were opening open and all the usual control of the pc is restored until the drive is restarted and mounts back onto the desk top.
I am coming to the conclusion this problem is not one with Iomega but is an Apple Leopard issue It seems theleopard is trying to access this external drive and is failing resulting in a rather long hang. I am hoping 10.5.2 fixes this as I am presuming the whole problem is being caused by some kind of analysis of the Ultramax 650 content is not being resolved and the lockup is only sorted if we crash a drive. This can be up to 3 times an hour and is making it nearly impossible to work on this mac.
Is there anybody out there running two firewire ultramax drives on their computer and having no problems in mounting them onto the dsktop using the same fw 800 cable...
Any advice appreciated thanks for any replies
    Adie

I too am having the same problem. I have a 2ghz G5 with Leopard and an Iomega Ultramax 650Gb. Everything seems fine, but after a couple of hours the OS hangs when trying to access the HD. Nothing works to resolve the issue (Force quit doesn't work, etc.) The OS comes back to life after powering down the drive. Then, after powering up the drive everything works fine for a couple of hours - then the issue hits again - very frustrating. Running Disk Utility 'Verify Disk' on the drive yields a green 'Drive appears to be OK' message.
This seems to have only been an issue for about a week.
I'm running 10.5.1, the Iomega Ultramax 650 is connected via FW800 to my G5 2Ghz.

I've found some other reports of these freezes scattered about the forums, but usually other people come in and post something about unrelated video cards. So this thread is specific to NVIDIA GeForce GT 130 running OS X Lion (10.7-10.7.3), to avoid confusion and cross-polination of different issues.

Since upgrading to Lion I have had many issues with crashes and kernel panics characterized by the following symptoms, listed here in detail so that people can find them when they search:
Pixellation - colored pixels appear in different areas of the screen, in seemingly random bunches.
Mosaics - squares appear redrawn in the wrong part of the screen. Sometimes these squares are large, other times tiny.
Recovery - sometimes the system recovers once it starts doing these. Other times it just keeps going until it freezes/panics.
Kernel Panics - I've only had the "grey screen" appear once or twice. Usually there is a complete system lockup before this can happen, and I have to reboot the system manually.
    Some solutions/attempts to solve:
Turn off Energy Saving - This is horrible for the monitor and can lead to burn-in, but I found that many of my crashes occured when the system was trying to recover from "screen sleep". So now I run a screen saver instead, which doesn't seem to trigger it as much.
Screen Saver - Sometimes I can "refresh" the system by turning on the screen saver and then coming back. Other times, this doesn't work and the pixellation/mosaic remains. Sometimes I can't even initialize the screen saver at all (in which case a total freeze usually occurs right after).
Rebooting - seems to clear things up for a while, but inevitably, the problem resurfaces.
Running Windows - Not really a solution, but I have had absolutely no issues with this behavior while running Windows 7 on this same machine (under Bootcamp).
Downgrading to Snow Leopard - I have not attempted this, but I've read others say that their crashes went away when they did. I would like some more concrete evidence on this if anyone has it.
    My diagnosis so far:
OS X Lion's NVIDIA driver kernel extensions (kexts) seem to be faulty with this GPU. The Windows drivers for this GPU work better on Apple's own hardware than OS X Lion's. Anectodal evidence indicates that Snow Leopard's drivers (at least up to 10.6.3 – more confirmation needed) do not display this issue. I can confirm that this never occurred in Snow Leopard until Lion was released and I upgraded to it.
My request for help and information:
If you are running this GPU (GeForce GT 130) and OS X Lion, please contribute to this thread offering any solutions you may have or, at the very least, listing your hardware and GPU profile.
If you can, post crash logs so that we can compare common issues (NVDA Resman seems to be a huge recurring kext in the crash logs, for instance).
Post screen shots or pictures taken of the pixellation (colored pixels) and mosaic (squares drawn in the wrong place) phenomenon, so we can build a body of evidence regarding this issue. I will continue to update this thread with the same.
I feel Apple has ignored these issues for far too long, and required too many people to simply purchase new computers and new GPUs. If we can build a solid body of evidence regarding this specific issue, it will be a thread that Apple Support can be referred to.

Crashed again, this time while running screen saver. Here's the log:

  • Note regarding ATI X1900 XT with Mac Pro, Leopard

To all who are experiencing any of the frequently reported problems with the hardware/software combination listed in the subject heading:
I purchased the ATI X1900 XT as an upgrade fro my Mac Pro in January. I never experienced any issues with the card in OS X Tiger, but several months ago I began to experience overheating issues in Windows XP (Boot Camp) when playing graphics-intensive games. The overheating caused visible graphics corruption/artifacts, graphics system resets and even spontaneous system restarts. The frequency and severity of these symptoms actually increased over time, leading me to believe that the card was either defective or that the overheating was causing degenerative/cumulative damage to the graphics hardware.
I recently upgraded to OS X Leopard, and all **** broke loose. Immediately after upgrading, I began to experience frequent graphics corruption/artifacts (in the form of spurious horizontal lines), system lockups/freezes and spontaneous system restarts. None of these issues were present in Tiger. The system became completely unreliable and essentially unusable.
It was initially a popular belief that Leopard's graphics drivers were somehow buggy or incompatible with the X1900 XT. After my experiences, I don’t believe that’s the case. I think that the issues reported are symptomatic of hardware, not software problems. Leopard is merely a catalyst. Leopard's increased leverage of OpenGL stresses the graphics hardware in ways that Tiger did not, causing an overall increase in graphics hardware temperature. I believe that the glitches/artifacts/system freezes/restarts that I experienced were not due to buggy drivers, but due to the graphics card overheating as a result of the increased load placed on it by Leopard.
I brought my X1900 XT in to my local Apple store today and asked for a replacement. Fortunately, they had one in stock, and they gave me a new card on the spot. The technician was apparently well aware of the issues, and mentioned that they have had a lot of similar problems with new iMacs.
Since installing the new card, I have experienced no graphics corruption, system freezes or spontaneous system restarts, either in OS X Leopard or in Windows XP gaming.
I would urge anyone who is experiencing problems with the X1900 XT (in either Windows or OS X) to have their card replaced by Apple - assuming that their card or system is still under warranty, that is.
I suspect one of two possible scenarios is true:
Theory #1: The Rev 1 X1900 XT is inherently flawed and has problems with overheating, which is exacerbated in OS X by upgrading to Leopard. Due to Leopard's greater leveraging of OpenGL, there is increased thermal stress placed on the card relative to Tiger. The overheating is evident in Leopard as graphics corruption/artifacts, system lockups/freezes and spontaneous restarts. The Rev 2 X1900 XT has (theoretically) corrected the problems inherent in Rev 1.
Theory #2. The thermal management system of the X1900 XT (all revisions) is inherently flawed. The card will slowly cook itself over time, and the effects are degenerative and cumulative. As the age of the card increases, so will the occurrence of graphics corruption, system freezes and spontaneous system restarts, especially when playing graphics-intensive games or running OS X Leopard.
I sincerely hope that Theory #1 is the case. I’ll be watching my system closely as I continue to use the new card, and hopefully there will be no further problems with overheating.
If theory #2 turns out to be true, then Apple has a huge PR nightmare on its hands, as each X1900 XT for the Mac is essentially a ticking time bomb that will self-destruct within months of purchase.
The funny thing is, this isn’t the first time I’ve had graphics card trouble with one of Apple’s “professional” towers. I bought a G5 several years ago when they were first released. I had problems with the stock nVidia graphics card in the form of what came to be known as the dreaded “black screen of death.” This became a commonly reported issue, experienced by many owners of the G5 in its first revision. Apple replaced my card and the problem never reoccurred. I’m hoping that I’ll be as lucky this time around.
I think it’s apparent that Apple’s batting average with graphics cards isn’t exactly stellar. It’s curious, considering that Apple offers a very limited selection of graphics options for their towers. One would think that by Apple only offering 3 graphics options, they would be able to have fairly tight control over the quality of the hardware, and plenty of time and resources to devote to testing. Unfortunately, I’ve had more graphics hardware-related problems on my Macs than any PCs I’ve ever used. That’s embarrassing, and Apple needs to do much better than this.

I replaced my G5 Quad with a Mac Pro 8-core. The Mac Pro's thermal design is far superior to the G5's. The G5 Quad's liquid cooling system has a much bigger task (IBM doesn't publish the thermal dissipation numbers on their PPCs but I suspect they are high) than the more efficient Intel Xeons. The G5 liquid cooling units are troublesome and the issue is something I think Apple is quietly solving by replacing failed liquid cooled G5's (that are still under warranty) with Mac Pros (a very smart PR move). My primary concern when I switched to a Mac Pro was issues with the X1900 XT graphics card failure rates posted on the web and in these discussions. The very latest generation of the X1900 XT (July 2007) are reported to be more reliable. Many G5 owners are still reporting failed cards. Given the much higher thermal environment and the remarks in this thread, I can now see why. The interior of a G5, especially Quad, gets too hot for this ATi card. I had the nVidia GeForce 7800 GT in my Quad. That was a very good card. Still, the issues with the ATi x1900 XT may indeed be a thermal design issue that AMD may need to either address directly, or turn to a 3rd party solution.
I installed a 3rd party cooling alternative, Arctic Cooling's Accelero S1. It's a passive system that replaces that hairdryer fan with a large heat sink. The package includes upgraded heat sinks for the power regulator (much beefier than the stock), and for each memory chip. The heat sink is a large conductive cooling assembly that uses 4 heat pipes. The vendor claims that using this system increases the case temperature by 1°C, which is easily handled by the system cooling system. So far, their claim appears to be valid. Since there's no longer a fan, you can imagine how quiet the system has become. The only installation hitch is that the black support clips were made for the PC version and the Mac Version adds a beefy support rail on the spine of the card. The workaround is to trim off the lower tang of the clips so they just rest against the support rail.
After reading this, I'm tempted to add the "Turbo" option, a couple of high volume low speed fans that fit on the radiator. I'm trying to "stress" the system by running SETI@Home 24/7 while doing all the other work to see how hot and how loud I can get this system. So far, no disappointments. This is the quietest workstation I've ever worked on. Even when "hot", the fans are not loud. The passive cooling system seems to work very well. I left Star Wars-Empire At War up and running in the menu for hours one day and it didn't seem to suffer from any ill effects. I have owned this system for just over a month. I will add more thermal load after I crank the system memory up to 24 or 32 GB. If there are any real cooling issues, I will find out about them next summer. I really dread the prospect of plunking down another $2k for the nVidia 4500 FX (I really don't need the 3D audio support) to get comparable video support.

  • Blank, non-loading emails in Snow Leopard Mail

    Hi,
I'm really confused. I am upgrading to a new computer, an iMac i5, and just transferred my main IMAP-based mail account.
Some messages - it seems to be messages with attachments only - are displaying blank.
They load up fine on my backup machine - a Powerbook G4 running Tiger 10.4.11 - but simply won't display on Mail 4.2.
Does anybody have any idea what might be causing this behaviour?
    Thanks in advance,
    Jamie

    Hi,
I'm sorry, perhaps I wasn't clear. I have no issue sending attachments. Its receiving them.
The issue you have is I believe caused by a failure in other mail readers to correctly parse an attachment which is placed 'inline' by Mail - usually if your recipient is on a PC. It works both ways - sometimes a PC attachment appears on a Mac as 'winmail.dat' if it has been placed inline, and putting it at the end of the mail sometimes helps the program to interpret it better; a more reliable alternative is a ZIP file.
But the problem I have is with received emails.
The same mails display fine on Tiger - so its something specific to my Leopard machine, or on the way from the server.
Other emails with attachments from the same client work fine, and this has happened with more than one client. They are both on PCs but its not specific to one client.
My working presumption is that there is an issue caused by the laptop and the desktop both trying to access the IMAP database at the same time. This used to cause mailbox lockups in POP servers, with very different results - the send/receive authentication would then fail and the ISP might have to reset the mailbox.
However this is not borne out by the fact that (a) I have a Palm pre which is continually accessing the same database and (b) I've never seen this issue on the laptop either before or after the desktop started accessing things.
Nonetheless I will try for the present to keep the laptop signed out so the desktop is the only computer accessing the database, and see where that gets me.
If anybody has any help with regard to the underlying reason why the email might display completely blank, I would be very grateful as this might help identify the cause of the problem.

  • Flash, Adobe Air, Time Machine, Safari not  working with Snow Leopard

Really need some help with this.
Did an archive and install of Leopard then installed Snow Leopard. No problems yet.
90% of Video sites would not work. Uninstalled and reinstalled Flash. Uninstalled ShockWave, could not reinstall with 10.6.1.
Attempt to install adobe air, received this message: "couldn't write the application to hard drive - please verify and try again." performed verify disk, disk permissions, repair permissions all ok.
Attempted to install Air again, same message.
Tried to use Time Machine to open Safari from a week ago, received message: I did not have permission.
Using Macbook Pro, 2g memory, 80g hd, with 42g free.
    Backed up on ext. HD,
Oh, one more, getting a lot of spinning wheels when using Safari that causes a lockup and hard re-start.
I have an expensive piece of software that uses adobe air and I create videos for my business and I'm not able to do so now.
Can anyone give me any ideas what I can do.
    Thanks,
    Z

After a couple of days of problems with Snow Leopard and flash, safari etc... I figured out the problem is with my account.
I created a new admin account and everything seems to be working. Well almost.
a couple of things I've noticed are right clicking on dock icons does nothing, no option to quit or keep in dock.
Apple Techs', had me change my account months ago to fix a problem with safari crashing. It didn't really work and more problems resulted.
*So now my big question is: How do I move need items over to the new account.* I don't want to move everything over as I might bring what caused the problem in the first place.
What I need are several apps,(like ilife, iwork, firefox, devonthink, 1password etc.) downloads, desktop, docs, files, and book marks.
*What is the best way for me to do this?* Is there anything I need to do re: Snow Leopard on the new account?
I feel like I have a new and functioning Mac again just around the corner.
    Looking for your help, thanks,

  • Leopard 10.5.2 on MacBook nothing but trouble

I updated to 10.5.2 soon after its release and I've had no end of problems that has now culminated in the hard drive on this 6 month old MacBook to be totally trashed. I can't even repartition the drive any longer and now it's off to the Apple Store.
I've had more crashes and system lockups with 10.5.2 in the last 2-3 weeks than I did in the months with Leopard or even 10.5.1. I've had more crashes than in the 5+ years that I've had my PowerBook G4 that's still happy running Tiger.

When I try and just partition the drive to a single partition, just to get it erased, it says it fails to mount the drive.
That could be an indication of a hardware failure. (It's also possible your file directory problems are caused by a hardware failure.) I would put your Mac OS X install disk in the drive, restart and hold down on the "d" key. This will startup the Apple Hardware Test. Run the extended tests and see if an error is detected with the "mass storage" test. Again, if the hardware turns out okay, you may still be able to rescue your files with DiskWarrior. If you do find a hardware error, you should call AppleCare Support or take your MacBook in for service. They may need to replace the hard drive.

  • My Exprience with Leopard so far

I got my copy of Leopard at 10:53 AM this morning and I have it allready installed on my Macbook. The installation went very smoothly. I had no problems with installing it. No lockups yet. So far everything is AOK

All went well here in Cincinnati with Lady Leopard. Since my iMac is late 2006 and I do a lot of tinkering, I did a "archive and install." This went well without a problem. Of course, I did follow the sage advice of others:
    1) Made a backup of all critical data
    2) Updated all third party software and widgets prior to install
    3) Checked the software updates from Apple (and yes, one had come down for iLife)
    3) Checked permissions and "repaired" the HD from the Tiger install disc
    4) Swapped out my wireless keyboard and mouse for my wired ones (one less delay while bluetooth hunts)
    5) Disconnected everything except the keyboard and the mouse and the power cord
Put in that Lady Leopard install DVD - and about a hour and a half later - between "verification of the disc" and the installation - it was all good.

  • Leopard 10.5 "erase & Install" process repeatedly dies on Mini

    Hello-
I am attempting to do a clean "erase and install" of Leopard 10.5 directly from DVD onto my Mini. (10.5.something- but it is NOT 10.5.6 that everyone is having trouble with.) I have done this EXACT same process- same machine, same DVD- before and had NO trouble.
Everything seems to go smoothly, DVD checked, disk checked, software installed, registra

Got a resolution on this from Apple that I will post in the hope that it will help someone else. After the initial lockup on the screen where you enter "computer long and short name":
    1. Power off by holding the power button,
    2. Leave the install DVD in the drive,
    3. Start in "safe mode" by holding the shift key until you see the Leopard installation screen,
    4. If you have successfully gotten into "safe mode" (you can't tell), you will NOT be asked to re-install,
    5. Humor the system and re-enter the registration information,
    6. Create an account again- you will NOT be able to re-enter the one you created a few minutes ago, but this is a throw-away
    7. You will now actually boot into safe mode,
    8. "Go to System Preferences", then "Accounts",
    9. Make sure the screen is unlocked (click on little lock icon) and delete the throw-away user.
You are in business! (At least I was)
    Hope this helps someone-

  • Lockups and Issues in 16:9 ratio..

    Hi Everyone,
I could use some suggestions. I use to be able to burn DVDs in a Widescreen ratio. I have upgraded to iLife 08 and Leopard. Now I have lockups burning in Widescreen ratio in 6.0 Theme (Pass Through) when you try to Preview. If I try another Theme it will burn, but it is very poor quality and to view is something smaller then Fullscreen.
I have called Tech Support and we were trying to figure out if it was an issue with iphoto, imovie or idvd since I was using imovie to add fonts and multiple sound tracks. My last test project was from iphoto directly to idvd and still had issues.
I tried to call Tech Support early this morning but gave up after 30 minutes on hold. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Should I reinstall iLife??
    Thanks in advance,
    Ken

All the freezing problems I see here are with MacBook Pro computers.
I just used that theme in widescreen for slideshows and it worked fine.

  • Voice Over Tool Lockup

I upgraded to Lion last week and now when I select Voice Over Tool, I get the beachball and the application just freezes. Is anyone else experiencing this problem? I have to do a force quit to get out. Any suggestions?
    Thanks

I did try removing the pref file, but it made no difference. I was already at 4.0.1.
I bit the bullet, offloaded all my files to an external hard drive and wiped my Mac clean. I then reinstalled Snow Leopard. Everything is working fine.
Not sure what the hang up with Lion is on FCE. All the video editing works fine. Just causes the entire system to lockup while using Voice Over. Not sure if it's related to FaceTime but sneaking suspicion says maybe.
    Thanks for the help.

  • Leopard OS Frequent crashing

Ive just switched over to mac after much fuss about its advantages. Am very pleased with the my macbook, bought it as the last batch with Tiger installed. So I got a free upgrade to Leopard. With Tiger it worked fine, very consistent.
However, Leopard has begun to annoy me. If I leave the computer without touching it for a few hours, it wont wake from sleep and I have to restart by holding the power button down. After restart the window will open to report the crash. General use ie. surfing the net, doing homework etc. also sometimes gets cut short with a random crash. I have to reboot and I lose my work.
All my programs also take turns hanging. Strangely this did not happen with Tiger.
I know Im not the only one who is experiencing this problem. My cousins who are running Leopard with experience of Tiger agree that Leopard is not performing up to standard.
Does anyone have any ideas on why this may be happening?
I tend to run alot of things at once, as you may expect for a college student. Loads of web surfing, music, microsoft mac word/powerpoint, calendar etc. multitasking.
Any advice will greatly be appreciated as Im new to mac os.

Sorry you waited until now to post your experience. I would backup and do a full erase of the hard drive, install and update to 10.5.2 etc and then import all your files.
Crashes and freezes should be dealt with when they happen or you can end up with a corrupt file system, directory, and leads to more crashes.
Disk Warrior 4.1 from Alsoft is probably a must have. You can use Time Machine to manage backups, but good to use something else as well to clone your drive so you have a bootable drive, or just install OS X on another drive and a) use that and see how it goes, or use that for doing repairs, and boot from there to repair your startup drive.
There are three bacic ways to "upgrade" to Lepard. In place update, archive and install, or erase and install. The first method has the most chance for problems.
Office 2008 has a slew of problems for users, I think, and needs to be updated by MS.
Corrupt cache files can lead to problems, and a good idea to clear those in any web browser, but especially Safari. It could use an option to delete all history etc on quit. I don't think keeping a disk cache helps much or improves performance. Personally, I still find the Firefox Minefield 3.0b4 to be faster and well-behaved.
Something you have that you run may not be compatible with Leopard.
Now that 10.5.2 is out, a lot of problems seem to be resolved. I did a fresh install yesterday and so far, no spinning beachball, lockup, Finder and copying 80GB back and forth.

  • Leopard causing frequent Kernel Panics?

Leopards a great OS and is pretty nice & smooth most of the time i'm running it.
Though sometimes after long usage (not necessarily intense either -I could just be surfing the net), it seems my computer starts to get bogged down, it starts to lag a tiny bit then without warning i get the kernel panic screen. Its happened atleast 5 times to me already since i installed Leopard.
I added 2GB more ram to my macbook pro and, seems to have reduced the occurances but it has happened to me once since i added the ram.
Just a minor annoyance and hoping someone could pinpoint the problem here, or if anyone else gets the same thing happening to them?

It doesn't seem to be tied to anything specific that I've noticed. Sometimes just Safari running, then it will freeze. I hard reset, and then open iChat, type one word and it'll freeze completely again. Last night it froze, so again I had to do a hard restart; I then opened System Preferences, and before I could do anything, it froze again...I have no idea?
Besides the freezing itself, the odd part is that I still have yet to see a kernel panic grey screen in Leopard. Until I read similar reports on here of lockups in Leopard, I actually thought that they removed the panic screen altogether.
Sometimes when it locks, the beachball cursor will appear (while the drives/fans increase in speed dramatically as stated above), and I can still move the mouse, but cannot click on anything - the cursor moves, but can't interact with anything; and it doesn't recover - a hard reset is all that will fix it. So it seems that something is almost hanging it up indefinitely at a very low-level. Perhaps this comes back to the bugs that have been reported in detail specifically with the Radeon X1900. That's another topic (I've posted on that as well, as I'm seeing major glitches in the display; lines and random colored shapes), but maybe it has something to do with this as well, I really don't know.
All I know for sure is, it's definitely problems in Leopard. I had hardly any trouble with Tiger over 2 years, so far with Leopard my Mac Pro is crashing constantly. I'd like to know why the kernel panic grey screen hasn't been shown to me yet, and if this is maybe a clue as to a specific type of issue more than another.
