Library from iPhoto 4 to iPhoto '08

I have iPhoto 4 on my G4 I want to get the library from there to iPhoto '08 on my G5 and my MacBook.
I have made the albums shareable from my G4 and dragged them into, or imported them into iPhoto '08, but that obviously does not get the original files on my new computers. The photo library in '08 is just an icon, where in 4 it is a big mess of folders, and the actual album folders only have shortcuts to the photos in the numbered hierarchy. And in the numbered hierarchy folder they are not grouped by album. So are these two libraries even compatiable? Can I just move over the entire library folder from 4 and put it in my pictures folder on the new computers with iPhoto '08 or do I just need to entirely re-create the albums on both new computers? I don't want to share the albums, I want them on all 3 computers.
I use the albums as my desktop and screensavers, and when I just copy the albums over I only get low res images. I like to have the photos change on my desktop and in the preferences when I'm selecting one of the album folders from iPhoto '08 the option to have the photos change is grayed out, yet not when I choose a folder that is actually on my hard drive. I'm assuming this is happening because it doesn't have the original files or because they are located on my idisk and not my hard drive?
This may seem stupid, but i'm not a techie and this is driving me crazy! Thanks for any help I can get!

Simply copy the iPhoto Library Folder from your old machine to the Pictures Folder on the new machine and launch iPhoto. It will do the rest.

  • How do I get my existing photo library from iPhoto to Photoshop?

How do I get my existing photo library from iPhoto to Photoshop?

    Hello MWWWB,
Unlike iPhoto, Photoshop is only an editor. It does not store or organize images. In iPhoto preferences, you can choose Photoshop as an editor. You will then get a choice when you double click on an iPhoto thumbnail to use iPhoto or Photoshop to make edits. But Photoshop does not have a library to store images like iPhoto.
You may want to use Adobe Bridge or Lightroom to help name and organize your pictures. You can Export your iPhoto Library to a folder and manage the exported images there.
Personally, I hate the arcane manner iPhoto stores and organizes images. I use it only for photos from my iPhone.

  • Photo preview blank when browsing Aperture Library from iPhoto

    Hello to everyone,
I need to import in iPhoto some photo of my Aperture's Library, but when I open it from iPhoto I can see all the pictures exept the lastest that I've imported in the Aperture Library (that have been taken with a Canon EOS 550D with RAW format): I see a blank icon (that can I select and import in my iPhoto library) instead its preview.
In Aperture the Canon EOS 550D RAW format works correctly, but I can't see the preview of the image in the browser under iPhoto.
Can anyone help me solving this problem?
I have Snow Leopard 10.6.7 (with all the updates) and the lastest versione of both iPhoto and Aperture.
    Thanks.
    Andrea

    Hi Terence,
thanks for the reply, but I've already regenerated all my previous (the entire library), but with no success.. I still continue to see a blank icon browsing the Aperture Library from iPhoto.
But I see that each time I enter in Aperture, it alway restart processing library (but only for some photos).. when it finish that process, I close Aperture and when I enter in it again, it restart processing the same photos.. again and again and again
    Any other suggestion?

  • How do I create a shared library from iPhoto when the file is too large to burn on DVD?

I  need to remove some photos (70 GB) to relieve a full hard drive.  I have exported and burned .jpg images on DVDs, but that is only useful as a worst case backup.  What I would like to have is a separate iPhoto Library for each calendar year of photos, so I could still view them in the albums and folders I have created to organize them.  I have done this before in an earlier version of iPhoto, and was able to create 2003 iPhoto Library, 2004 iPhoto Library, etc.  I put a copy on DVD (the full year fit on 1 DVD) and another copy on an external drive.
I am having problems doing this with iPhoto '09 (version 8.1.2).  The iPhoto library for each year is too large to burn on DVD.  When I select certain albums from the year that will fit on DVD and use the Share>Burn commands, it creates a library with Events and Faces, but none of the albums are listed on the left.  The albums are important to organize the photos for viewing (birthdays, vacations, holidays, etc.)  I didn't always pay attention to labeling Events when I imported photos, so that is not an adequate alternative to my albums.
I was thinking that if I could create a library for the entire year, it might include my albums and folders. I would have space for this on my external hard drive.  However, I can find no way to create a library for the entire year and put it on my external drive - the only option is to burn a DVD or export .jpg images.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Best suggestion: Buy some external USB or Firewire drives. Move your Library to one, back it up to another. A lot more reliable than DVD, a lot less work and much more convenient. For a start, you don't have to break up the library...

  • IPhoto Library from iPhoto 08 to 09

I'm a newbie...pardon my lack of knowledge on this. I've got an iMac running Leopard and iPhoto 08. I've got a pretty extensive library setup. My wife just setup a new mini-mac running Snow Leopard and iPhoto 09. They are both sharing on the same network. I'm looking for the easiest/fastest route to get my library (08) to her machine (09). I thought about exporting all photos out of mine and importing into hers, but I don't think this route will preserve the Events. Can I copy my library file to her machine and tell her iPhoto 09 to "use" this as its library, or will this cause a problem given the version difference between the two?
Any help and thoughts would be great, and I appreciate the time. Please read in all of this I'm new to macs and want to use whatever method I can that is recommended by apple to achieve this...I'm not into reinventing the wheel if I don't have to.

To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network, Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.

  • Converting library from iPhoto 5 to 6 problems

OK, I converted my library through the network, while it was on my iPhoto 5 comp...So here's the deal:
PowerBook G4 (iPhoto 5): An unreadable iPhoto library (it says I have to upgrade to iPhoto 6)
iMac C2D (iPhoto 6): Readable library, but all of my albums/rolls are not saved.
This all happened after I opened my PowerBook's library from my iMac. Ahhh!
There must be a way to manually create a new library...Maybe delete some storage files and have iPhoto rebuild them? I am clueless.
Also, I am clueless to as how iPhoto's file sstem works (originals, modified, pictures, 2005, 2006, etc).
    Thanks.

    Andrew
    1. [i>PowerBook G4 (iPhoto 5): An unreadable iPhoto library (it says I have to upgrade to iPhoto 6)
Yes, the v6 library is not readable by an earlier version. There is no cure for this unless you rebuild your v5 library from scratch, using v5.
    2. iMac C2D (iPhoto 6): Readable library, but all of my albums/rolls are not saved.
Where did this library come from?
This all happened after I opened my PowerBook's library from my iMac. Ahhh!
Guess you figured out the problem there, then.
To rebuild a version 6 library: Move the iPhoto Library Folder from Home/Pictures to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library Folder on your desktop and find there the Originals folder. From there drag the individual rolls to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library Folder on your desktop.
A Note about the iPhoto Library Folder:
In this folder there are various files, which are the Library itself and some ancillary files. Then you have three folders
Originals are the photos as they were downloaded from your camera or scanner.
(ii) Modified contains edited pics, shots that you have cropped, rotated or changed in any way.
This allows the Photos -> Revert to Original command - very useful if you don't like the changes you've made.
(iii) Data holds the thumbnails the the app needs to show you the photos in the iPhoto Window.
When upgrading, many people are afraid that they will not be able to find a desired photo in the new structure: There are three ways (at least) to get files from the iPhoto Window.
    1. Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size.
    3. Show File: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
Finally: It is strongly advised that you do not move, change or in anyway alter things in the iPhoto Library Folder as this can cause the application to fail and even lead to data loss
Happy Christmas*, Xmas*, Holidays*, Hannukah* or Monday* to you.

    *delete as appropriate

  • Urgent Problem: Transfer iPhoto Library from iPhoto 4.0.3 to iPhoto 8.1.1

On my G5-Desktop (OS-X 10.4.11 I had created with iPhoto 4.03 a very voluminous library (about 3.7 GB) with a large amount of albums. My attempt to transfer it to iPhoto 8.1.1, located on MacBook pro ( OS-X 6: Snow Leoparf) failed: I have followed the instructions of Terence (many thanks!) by copying the file "iPhoto library" from the "old" Mac to the folder "Pictures" on the "new" one. Clicking on it I got the message, that it cannot be opened and that I have to start a newer version of iPhoto. Starting directly iPhoto 8.1.1 showed me a lot of mpg-pictures spread all over storage-media, BUT NOT the albums and pictures of the original library. The library was still untouched in the correct place.
I cannot imagine that apple has not provided a transfer-method....
BUT WHO CAN HELP ME TO FIND IT ?????

I would guess that the copy from the old machine to the new one has gone wrong.
Try doing it again and then - on the new machine - Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and point it at the copied library.

  • Problems exporting library from iPhoto

    Hi,
I'm trying to export my iPhoto library but when i go to export to my external hard drive it gives me an error message and tells me it can't make volumes.... what do i do?
I think there could be an error within my library.
    Any help is much appreciated!

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Check to see where you iPhoto Library is located. Make sure it's in the Pictures folder. Next, go to the Finder->Go->Go to folder menu option and put in /volumes. Check to see if there's an alias file to your external hard drive in there. If not you can try creating an alias file for your external HD and put it in there.
As a workaround if you can't get it to export directly to the external HD you'll have to export to the Desktop and manually copy over to the external.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Importing library from iphoto loses referenced file

I've imported large libraries from iphoto and when i bring them into aperture, there's always a yellow triangle at the bottom and when i open the photo it says "referenced file not found"
It looks like the iphoto library has been copied into the aperture library judging by the size of things, but the photos all seem to be only thumbnails when i try to view them any larger.
Is this a bug or is there a workaround?

Best suggestion: Buy some external USB or Firewire drives. Move your Library to one, back it up to another. A lot more reliable than DVD, a lot less work and much more convenient. For a start, you don't have to break up the library...

  • Transfering Library from iPhoto 06 to iPhoto 09

I have recently bought a new iMac and wish to transfer my photos from iPhoto 06 installed on my Macbook to my new computer. I do not wish to use Migration Assistant as my Macbook now contains dross accumulated over three or four years and Migration Assistant does not give me the opportunity to filter out the rubbish. What is the best way to accomplish a successful transfer? I have about 6000 pictures.

  • Moving iPhoto library from iPhoto 8 to iPhoto 9

I moved iPhoto library created under iPhoto 8 to Time Capsule Disk and when I open the library under iPhoto 9 I can't see the pictures, only the names etc.
Please help. It's the only problem I have when moving from my old iMac (2007) to new MacBook Pro.
    Martin

Take it off the Time Capsule disk. That's nt an appropriate place for it.
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to rebuild the thumbnails. It can take 3 or 4 goes for this to work

  • Can I import my iPhoto Library from iPhoto 7.1.5 to iPhoto 9.5.1?

I'm trying to migrate from my old ('08) iMac to my newer MBP, but I cannot seem to successfully import my iPhoto library. The original version is 7.1.5 and the one on my MBP is 9.5.1. I have tried various techniques, mainly variations on copying the iPhoto library to USB drive and then moving to the Pictures folder on the MBP, but iPhoto refuses to import/recognise the library. It does not appear to be corrupt. Is it because the original library is incompatible with iPhoto 9.5.1, or is there some other way I could try?

but I cannot seem to successfully import my iPhoto library.
Never import one Library to another. Every version and thumbnail is imported like a distinct photo, you lose all your Albums, Keywords etc., the link between Original and Previews is destroyed, the non-destructive editing feature is ruined and so on. In summary: it's mess.
What you need to do is open the Library - see Neil's link for the upgrade - and update it.

  • Aperture Library from iPhoto

As a new user of Aperture i do not understand the issues relating to transfer of an existing iPhoto library to Aperture.
I do understand that Aperture does use an existing iPhoto library without the need for migration, but i did a test and migrated the libary to Aperture and found that the detail was the same in both libraries but the file size went from. 28GB too 49GB, i would e greatful if i could get an explanation as to
    1. Why the file size grow by so much
    2. As Aperture uses an existing iPhoto library is there any benefit in migrating the library
    3. If migrating the library helps is there a way of then sliming down the file size
    Thanks in advance

i do not understand the issues relating to transfer of an existing iPhoto library to Aperture.
There are no issues as there is no transfer. Just open the Library with Aperture. Done.
As to your other questions: how did you Migrate the Library to Aperture?
And no, there is no benefit in migrating the Library.

  • Restoring iPhoto 4 Library from iPhoto 4 DVD

How can I import the albums/photos from a DVD that was created by selecting all of the images in my iPhoto Library and then clicking the burn button? When I insert the DVD, iPhoto recognizes "iPhoto Library-1" and approx. 1,800 images appear in the albums that were originally created. However, when I use the import function to restore the DVD to iPhoto more than 4,500 images appear in new albums labelled by year. Thank you.
iMac G3   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   Epson Scanner

Thank you, it worked! I hadn't tried moving one album at a time. Apple Tech Support told me the DVD data was corrupted, and I almost discarded the disk. I also have had problems with iPhoto 4 becoming unstable while scanning and importing color negative film with an Epson Perfection 3490 scanner. At times, many of the thumbnail images will disappear in the organize mode, and none of them will appear in the edit mode or the edit mode "freezes". Apple Tech had me reload Panther and iPhoto with great difficulty. I received error messages stating that other instances of iLife 04 were running (preventing install) when they had been closed. After many attempts to sell me a G4 or 5, Apple had me remove the iTunes Manager from the Startup Disk and load iPhoto 4 only from iLife. This appears to be working. But now, none of the scanner buttons are operational requiring that scans be launched from inside the Epson Scan software, and Epson doesn't have a fix stating they don't guarentee full compatability with Macs. (That wasn't disclosed with their merchandising.) I receive an error message that the Epson Scan Monitor volume (which monitors button use) can't be located. Any suggestions? Thanks again. MSA

  • I cannot open any library from iPhoto 11 (the menu for open is grey).

    Same for creating new library
In the root user everything works
Is there any startup application kwon to be not compatible with iPhone?
If I open cklicking a library everything works fine

Have you made sure you're holding down the Option key before you launch iPhoto and keep it down until the selction window appears.
Log into another user account on your Mac that's the same as the problem account and check to see if iPhoto will work OK there.  If it does go back to your account and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder (Snow Leopard and Earlier).
or with Lion and Mt. Lion from the User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto/
    Data/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE:  In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
