Light rays challenge

Hi all,
I have a logo (created in Illustrator) that I want to use in the intro of a video (like a spalsh screen). I was hoping to use Light Rays to have the light shine through the text, but I can't find a way to get what I want. Is there a way to move the source light from left to right behind the logo? I'm not talking about the angle of emission (which is keyframing the "center" parameter). I'm talking about keeping the center at 0,0 and physically moving the source light from left to right.
This was discussed in this thread but the OPer never posted his answer.
Wait, I just thought of something I'll try while you all are looking for this: I might try to keep center at 0,0 and then animate a mask to reveal the logo (a word). Don't know if that will give me my desired effect, but it's worth a try!
If anyone has an answer to my original question, that would be cool in the meantime.
Thanks,
Jonathan

  • Light rays of effect not reaching to edge of screen after resize

    Hello,
    I have the following problem:
I created a composition with an Image (Logo) that is highlighted by lightrays and reflections.
It looks great -  than i decided, that it would even look better if it slowly zooms in.
But now, after i scaled the composition down, the light rays don't reach to the edge of the screen no more.
    What can i do?
    Thanks!

You need to do your animation on your logo, then precompose it (moving all attributes). You would then apply all of your effects work on your your new precomp, not the logo itself. Read more on Precomposing here.

  • Help: Light ray + Text

Hello board, I am new to Motion 3 and I know this is one of the easier tasks but I need guidance on how to make light rays pass through text from left to right to give it a shine effect. If you could link me to the thread that has this guide already or just reply here I would appreciate the help. Thank you!

Here's one way to do it:

  • How this light rays and fogg blue impression can be made in Photoshop or in illustrator?

    Hi All,
I am in dire need of your help, How can this special effect in attached image  can be produced. To be precise, I mean light rays coming from dj player and if  you notice there is blue foggy impression on tshirt , How these things can be  made in Adobe Photoshop CS3 or in Adobe Illustrator CS3?

    • create a vertical Gradient Layer black to nothing
    • create a horizontal Gradient Layer nothing to white to nothing
    • apply »Create Clipping Mask«
    • add black background
    • convert that whole stack of layers to a Smart Object or flatten it (being as CS3 will not support perspectival transformation of SO)
    • invoke Edit > Transform > Perspective or Warp
    • create a Gradient Map Layer blue to cyan (or whatever) and clipping mask it to that layer
    • set the Gradient Map Layer to Color and the Layer with the Gradient to Screen (that way it should work on all backgrounds)
    • if necessary apply some Gaussian Blur to the gradient layer

  • Animate light rays on object

Hello, I'm fairly new to Motion and need some help.
I have applied the Light Rays filter to a vector logo I have created. I'm stuck on getting the light rays to animate.
I know its probably dead simple, but I can't seem to figure it out.

This button is your friend. Set your starting parameters, move your timeline marker to the desired end point, hit record and set your end parameters.

  • Final Cut Express "Light Rays" Effect

Might also be called 'Trap Door Effect'.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K1FhvN_PUxc
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MPuh61ivmyg
It's commonly used in Sony Vegas productions.
One complicated way of doing it in FCE would be to use multiple layers of video, add a Gaussian Blur and increase the zoom on the bottom layer while lowering the Opacity on the top layer, but in order to smoothly animate the rays you'd have to do some rather convoluted things.
Is there a simple way to do this in Final Cut Express (using 3.5 right now, considering upgrading) for both video and text?

I don't believe the "Light Rays" filter included with FCE 4 is the effect you want. It makes the clip look a lot different than the examples you provided. Effects like the one you are looking for need to be created by themselves, and not just applied. Tom's book definitely explains how to do this, but I was unsuccessful as of yet in finding the exact lesson (part of the problem is that I don't know exactly what such an effect was called, so I can't just look it up in the index. It's a 300-something page book, so finding a particular section without remembering its name is a little tricky...)
I will continue to keep my eye out. I believe it has something to do with creating two text tracks, applying some sort of glow to the bottom one, and keyframing its movement. Will let you know when I know for sure.

  • Light Rays filter is not rendering

Hello all, I am applying the light rays filter to a gif.
When I render the animation it's pixelated, any way to make it work?
    I'm using motion 5.2
    Cheers.

Thank you for taking the time to answer.
The gif itself is pretty big and renders well with no effects applied, it is only when the light rays filter is applied that it all goes badly pixelated, I am not talking about the slight perception of aliased edges, the gif becomes ridiculously pixelated. I am away from my computer and therefore cannot provide a screenshot, I will try to show one as soon as I can.
Again thank you for your help.

  • CC Light Rays From Camera Perspective?

Hey guys, This may be a newb question but i cant seem to find anything on it. I have been messign with CC Lightrays in After Effects 5.5 and im using it by adding keyframes to lower and up the intensity back and fourth to make it look like the light is moving. My question is though, How can i get it so that the source of the rays is off screen yet fills the screen with its rays? Because the more you drag the source light off screen, the more it makes a cone chape of light. Also, i wanted to know how i can make the rays coming at me when im facing the camera. I have a shot where im looking at the camer and i want it to look like im looking into the light rays and im also surrounded by it. Like im in a beam. Any help qould be great.

Hi Joey, what Mylenium referred to was Precomposing: Have a look at the screeshot. Supposed you have the object that is the source for the light rays on the "Your Object" layer and the CC Light Rays effect on an adjustment layer above. Then select both layers, right click and choose "Pre-compose" (Move all attributes). This results in a new composition, in form of a single layer, that took the place of the old ones. This new layer can be scaled up so that the source of the rays move outside the screen while still shining into the picture.

  • Problem cc light rays in AE CC

    hello
i've a lot of project using this effect in AE CS5.5. Now for my work, i've to work in AE CC et the effect doesn't work like it used to. I can't précompose like i've read on forum or tuto, because it's too long now and to many project. is anybody have an idea to save me?
    thank you

well, i'm starting with a blue dot imported as an png image 50X50 pixel, in a HD composition. in CS5.5 the rays can occupy all the comp, but in CC the rays are limited to the 50X50 pixel of the png. i've tried to precompose, it works but i have many many projects to check and no much time. i've tried the "grow bound" effect but it seem it's not working with cc lightrays.
here is what the effect does :

  • Overdrive & Light Rays in 5.1.4 - not supported in HD

Was finishing a TV special in HD and these lovely new effects were used liberally. Problem was, my Kona couldn't render them in HD! Anyone else run into this problem?
It was solved by exporting the needed media at DVCPRO HD 720 24p, then re-importing & applying the effects. Still, it would take up to 2 minutes to render a second's worth of media that way. Why would Apple make effects we can't use?! (Of course if I upgraded to FCS 2...;P)
    Working in 1080spf 23.98 HD 10-bit Uncompressed
    Using:
    4 x 2.5 GHz PowerPC G5
    4.5 GB DDR2 SDRAM
    FCP 5.1.4
Kona 3 version 3.3(Later versions did not help when tested on other systems)
    GeForce 6600 w/ 256MB VRAM

    Same problem with FCS 2!
I have the same computer, but with the GeForce 7800GT. I am working in 1080p Apple ProRes (HQ) and am very disappointed that this effect doesn't work.

  • Keyframe center property in CC Light Rays with path?

Is there a way to keyframe this along a path with bezier curves to get a more sophisticated and smoother look?

Open the layer viewer to show effect control motion paths. Simply double-click/ Alt+click on the layer.

Images this week seem to fall into two groups -- restorations and
colorizations and extensions. Let's look at the extensions first:
BILL Z: I like the exploitation of the old picture's flaws and the
addition of the torn edges and burnt look.
DONALD M: The stereoptican card is a great idea -- right down to the
printing and the slightly battered rounded card edges.
ELLEN H: The concert poster is cool -- I like the way you worked the
    names into the copy.
JOHN E: Nice hearts and flowers themed card -- I like the way you
    handled the drop shadows.
MARIE S: I like the choice of font in your baptismal remembrance.
RED S: The use of the other old photo is interesting -- a touch of
anachronism and a cool doll collection.
TAB A: The ambiguous setting (jail or burglar bars?) adds interest here -- nice work on the frame.
TOM M: The skull/roses theme is fascinating -- love the light rays and the fabric folds.
    Now the restorations:
    ALEX B: Nice clean-up in #1. I like the Grandma Moses/folk art
colorizations. Interesting background substitution in #4.
BEN M: Good increase in contrast and interesting hue choices in
colorizing. Blurring the background saves a lot of detail work.
CHARLES Y: The watercolor look gives it a hand colored authenticity.
DONALD M: I love the pyramids in the background!
JODI F: A very painterly version -- nice work on the child's head.
MALCOLM D: The vignette is a sensible choice here.
RITA G: A lot of work cleaning up that background!

  • Bright light transition

i am looking for a transition similar to a dip to white color transition. i would like this to look a little different. it's hard to describe what i'm trying to find.
i would like for the video clip to dissolve to a bright light with the next clip to follow.
but i do not want the dip to color transition. does anyone know what i'm talking about.
they use it in movies alot when people come out of a "dream sequence" or something similar to that. thanks.

similarly you can use the 3 way color corector to keyframe blowing out the highlights ... in combnation with subtle use of the light rays filter and you might come up with a new look
if you do, be sure to post an example of how it turned out, with a quick how to guide for all the others to come who will want to recreate it
    good luck

  • Best camera for low light and sports

    have the sx200is
looking for a newer camera for sports and low light shots

The challenge with sports is that you are REALLY pushing the camera gear to it's limits.  Fast action requires fast shutter speeds.  But fast shutter speeds demand a lot of light and only outdoor games played during the daytime have that.  Indoor games or games played under field lighting at night generally do not have the kind of lighting needed to shoot with fast shutter speeds -- not the kind of shutter speeds needed to freeze action.  So this ends up demanding a camera with excellent ISO performance and lenses with very low focal ratios so they can collect a LOT more light when the shutter is open.  This gear is expensive.
You will want to consider a reasonable budget depending on what you can afford and the needs of the specific sports.
Are these indoor or outdoor sports? If outdoors, are these played during the day or are they night games?
The "best" camera for sports and low light is the EOS-1D X.  It has phenominal low-light performance, has an amazing focus system,  and can shoot at 12 frames per second.  But it's about $6800 for the "body only" and then you still need lenses.  I'm guessing this is probably not what you had in mind.  But if money were not a constraint... this would be the one to go for.
The 5D III is another amazing camera for low light performance and and also has an amazing focusing system (largely the same as the 1D X) can shoot at 6 frames per second, and only costs $3500... again, that's the "body only".  Still probably not what you had in mind.
The 70D has an extremely good focus system (though not as good as the 5D III and 1D X), not quite as good as low light (but pretty good and much better than a point & shoot camera) and shoots at 7 frames per second (1 fps faster than  5D III) and it only costs $1200 for the body only.
The T5i will be noticeably less expensive than the 70D... a good (but not extremely good) focusing system and 5 frames per second, but the body and 1 kit lens combined is about $850 but that wont a lens suitable for use shooting sports so you'll still need to invest in more appropriate lenses.
When shooting action photography in low light, what you _really_ want is a lens that can collect a lot more light than the average lens for that very brief moment when the shutter is open.  Such a lens can allow you to use a faster shutter speed to help freeze those action shots.  But *which* lens you use depends on the sport.
For low-light sports, these would ideally be f/2.8 zoom lenses... but f/2.8 zoom lenses are not cheap.  Canon's EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS USM (ideal for most indoor sports and outdoor sports IF the action is happening close to you) is about $2500.  Sigma's lens is about half that price.  But if you're covering action on a large athletic field and the players are far away, they'll still be small.  Sigma makes a 120-300mm f/2.8 zoom for sports... for the low low price of only $3600.
Scott Kelby does a video to talk about sports photography and he discusses the equipment used and why... and basically says if you want the gear for shooting sports, you basically need a suitcase full of money.

  • Complicated easy question - ray tracing

    Hello,
i am working currently on one project - i have an optical system (some prisms, some lenses etc) and i want to make a VI to calculate propagation of a light ray - something like ray tracing.
I know that labview is not the perfect platform to deal with this issue, however i still would like to try.
My problem is as following: i want to calculate the propagation of a ray through a lens. I have the ray with some coordinate (y=const) and a plano convex lens - the front of a lens is a piece of a sphere. To calculate the propagation (using snell law) I have to find an angle between the ray and the line which is tangent to this lens-sphere in the point where my light beam hits the lens.
My procedure (on the piece of paper):
1.i know the coordinates of a center of a sphere (let's take (0,0)) and its radius r (x^2+y^2=r^2). I know the value of y=y_0 for which the ray enters the lens.
then i can calculate the x_0: x_0^2+y_0^2=r^2. Now i know the point where light enters the lens (x_0,y_0)
2.then just the usual procedure of finding equation for a line tangent to sphere (y=a*x+b):
i put y_0 and x_0 to this equation:
    y_0=a*x_0+b
and i can remove one unknown value (for example b): y=a*(x-y_0)+x_0
3.then i put such equation into the equation for sphere (x^2+y^2=r^2) and this is the quadratic equation which has only one unknown value x and one free parameter: a.
4.beacause i want to have tangent line, so it should have only one common point with sphere - so the quadratic equation should have determinant equal to zero (only one solution for x). This gives me an equation for a. I should find the value of a which satisfy this equation and then i know this tangent line and have the solution! uf....
Unfortunately i still didn't find a solution to implement this in labview (and i'm motivated beacuse most of the work for this project is already done). I was trying with the formula parsing and so on, but i didn't succeeded.
I will be really grateful for any hints or help!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    helmik,
LabVIEW does not do symbolic math.  Once you have the equations solved on paper or reduced to a set which can be solved numerically, tehn you can program it in LV.
When I look at your math in the first post, I see that in (3) you describe an equation in x and a. However, this is not a quadratic equation but a fourth order polynomial with terms like a^2*x^2 and 2*a^2*x*y_0. So this is not so easily solved.
Is not the tangent to the sphere at right angles to the radius at that point? The angle of the radius can be calculated from x_0 and y_0 and the center of the sphere. Then add 90 degrees. One arctangent and no complicated equations.
