Lightroom (1.4.1 and 2.0) doesn't properly save IPTC in UTF8?

I'm having problems viewing metadata written in Lightroom 1.4.1 or 2.0 beta in other applications.
I write titles, captions and keywords in Lightroom on Mac OSX, using danish characters such as Æ Ø and Å. I then export the files to a JPG, and try to use it in for example Flickr and Menalto Gallery 2.2.4 (both of which can read IPTC tags), but in both cases the danish characters do not display correctly, and I have to manually edit all titles, captions and keywords containing them, after I have uploaded.
This prompted me into doing a bit of research on what was actually written to the file, and it seems that both Lightroom 1.4.1 and 2.0 beta do not correctly write IPTC tags in UTF8.
I've been using Exiftool to view the metadata on one of the files exported from Lightroom (both versions), and this is what I see: The XMP tags display correctly, but the IPTC tags do not.
> exiftool -f -G LR1.4.jpg
[IPTC] Object Name : ¾¿ ^' * Erik
[IPTC] Caption-Abstract : Her ¾r nget m¾rkeligt text. J¿¾*@
[XMP] Title : æø å ^' * ç Erik!
[XMP] Description : Her ær någet mærkeligt text. Jøåæ*@
Reading the Exiftool forums, it seems that according to the IPTC specification, IPTC supports UTF8 encoded metadata, but it *requires* that the field IPTC:CodedCharacterSet is set to "UTF8" or "ESC % G". My theory is that Lightroom *does* write IPTC tags in UTF8, but doesn't write the CodedCharacterSet field (I can't see it), and Exiftool then interprets the IPTC data as latin1 (or something similar), and gets the characters wrong. It seems that this is what Flickr and Gallery 2.2.4 are doing as well.

Am I correct? And can Lightroom be changed to properly export IPTC metadata in UTF8?

I did a bit more research: I tried setting the CodedCharacterSet to utf8 myself:
exiftool -IPTC:CodedCharacterSet="UTF8" LR1.4.jpg
...thus forcing Exiftool to interpret the iptc tags as UTF8, but that didn't give me readable IPTC tags:
[IPTC] Object Name : ? ? ^' * ? Erik
[IPTC] Caption-Abstract : Her ?r n?get m?rkeligt text. J???*@
Which led me to believe that Lightroom for Mac OS X isn't writing IPTC tags in UTF8 after all.
Finally I tried saving the content of the IPTC tags to a file, and opened that with TextMate, forcing it to interpret it as MacRoman. That worked. There were still a few weird characters here and there, but the danish characters were displayed.
So apparently Lightroom 1.4.1 and 2.0b on Mac OSX are saving their IPTC tags in MacRoman encoding. I would *really* like an option to have IPTC tags written in UTF8, because the IPTC tags currently generated from my Lightroom on Mac cannot be read properly on Windows or Linux systems.

I have downloaded my latest flash player and it still doesn't work, why?

Lightroom doesn't use the Camera Raw plug-in. All of the Camera Raw technology is part of the Lightroom program. You will either have to upgrade to Lightroom 5 or use the DNG converter to create digital negative copies that can be used with Lightroom 4.

I'll have to get a better instructor on deleting the preferences since when I've doen it in the past nothing is there when I open LR the catalog is gone. I assumed that was what was supposed to happen so I start importing all over again.  But that is a different issue...
The problem has been happening since at least the beta of 3 came out and I saw other posts back then saying they had similar issues but I assume it was a beta thing...  But since the full version came out and through each incremental change I haven't seen an improvement. If anything it has gotten a little worse with time.
I have to try to be careful to not be in a hurry and start clicking around in the catalog as it seems fragile until it has cataloged all the photos in the library. When starting you will see the numbers populate the folders very slowly and I try not to click on a folder that hasn't had the number of photos pop up yet. Also draging the slider down to see more of the cataloge can have the same affect and crash the system.
I wish I had more to go on.. I believe it may be a resources issue but as I went from 3-4 Gig I thought it would get better. I don't have big programs running but did have outlook and word running in the background along with firefox and chrome.
And yes it only happens on this HP desktop (it's 2+ yrs old) and may be showing it's age a bit. My laptop which has less resources doesn't have the issue.. I have them sharing the catalog. (not at the same time) just when I'm working in other places in the house.

  • Upgrading to Yosemite wiped out my Lightroom 5.6 catalog and presets.

My stand alone Lightroom 5.6 is gone. Even the LR presets that came with Lightroom 5 are missing.
I have tried for hours to reload all the presets, plugins and link the images (stored always on external HD)
Things look right after backing up however, restarting the computer everything is lost again.
Going back to find the back up? It is empty. To open Lightroom 5.6 empty again. It doesn't give me the option to choose a catalog.
I can however, open a recent catalog. It opens up without any presets or images. Either way I have to manually link everything all over again.
The Adobe forums were not as helpful as I had hoped.
My apologies if this doesn't make sense.

In LR6, select File->Open Catalog and point to your LR5 catalog

  • Backing up in Lightroom?  All files and adjustments?

    Hello all!
I want to move my entire lightroom collection to another computer.   What backup procedure should I follow?  If I back up my catalogue, that doesn't include the actual image files correct?    How would I go about getting the entire collection moved into a new install of lightroom including image files and adjustments?
Bit of a LR newbie...thanks for any help!

Lightroom does not provide any of the tools necessary to back up your images or preview data. So, this means you either have to use a third party backup application or simply copy the images, catalog and previews to a safe location (e.g. external disk). You'll want to include the lrcat file in any backup procedure you adopt because it contains information about how you want your library and images treated that cannot be embedded in the images as metadata (e.g. collections, pick flags, stacks, history, etc)
    Edit:
    >How would I go about getting the entire collection moved into a new install of lightroom including image files and adjustments?
Install Lightroom then double click the original lrcat file to launch Lightroom. However, I'm not sure why you want to go for anew install of Lightroom.

    HELP HELP

To confirm, your existing mail client isn't communicating with your existing and remote mail services at Dreamhost? Which mail client are you using (Apple mail?), and how is mail on the client set up?
It would initially seem that your client is still referencing the server, either for its inbound or outbound mail. (And I'm not sure how unplugging the server helps here, unless there's some sort of a configuration issue, or a duplicate network address or such.) This would usually be something within the configuration of the mail client.
The Mac OS X Server is significantly easier than the many other servers and server operating systems I've dealt with over the years, but it requires reading the manuals and/or some knowledge of networking and of server environments.
Small shops and home folks without the time or inclination to "spin up" on these server areas can be well-served with some help initially configuring the server. Servers are different from clients. Stuff that you're implicitly used to using when you're running a client -- the DHCP server, for instance -- are what the servers provide you with.
As for Mac OS X Server and particularly if you head outside of the default settings and sequences and off into the customizations, which is what has happened here, you might want to engage some assistance. Not just for the direct and obvious initial set-up sequence, but also for getting you set-up and started with backups and other such tasks. Before you get too deep in here and get too much underway and too much saved on your disks, do seriously consider getting somebody in to help set this box up for you.
Mac OS X Server is not "no IT", but it is rather closer to "less IT" than most. Particularly once you get it configured and running.

I downloaded 2 cds onto my ipod nano through itunes.  Recently my itunes account changed for some unknown reason and now it doesn't recognize the songs from the cds.  The songs are still on my ipod.  I am affraid to sync now because the songs may be deleated, and I don't have the cds anymore.  How can I transfer the songs from the cds on my ipod back to itunes so that I don't lose them?

What you have on your computer is your iTunes library, not your "account."  The "account" you have for iTunes is your Apple ID, which you use when purchasing or downloading from the iTunes Store.  If these songs came from music CDs that you imported into iTunes, those songs are not related to your Apple ID.
Recently my itunes account changed for some unknown reason and now it doesn't recognize the songs from the cds
How are they not "recognized"?  Are the songs still listed in your iTunes music library, but grayed out?  They no longer appear in your iTunes library at all?
If you search your computer (not in iTunes) for the song files, using one of the song names, can you find the song files?

Hi, I rented warhorse HD, and the sound doesn't work, my itunes version is 10.6.1(7). How do I fix it or who do I direct to get my money back? Thank you

I'd report the problem to the iTunes Store.
Log in to the Store. Click on "Account" in your Quick Links. When you're in your Account information screen, go down to Purchase History and click "See all".
Find the item that is not playing properly. If you can't see "Report a Problem" next to the entry, click the "Report a problem" button. Now click the "Report a Problem" link next to the item.
(Not entirely sure what happens after you click that link, but fingers crossed it should be relatively straightforward.)
