Lightroom and the spinning colour wheel

Hi all,
It seems my Lightroom has developed a problem! I'm using v1.4.1 on OS X 10.5.2.
Until a few minutes ago, I've had no problem at all with LR, in any module. Plugging in my card reader spawned the import dialog...all was well. In fact I used it 15 minutes ago to browse through some images.
I closed my machine down, then restarted 10 mins later...now LR either displays the splash screen and spinning colour wheel forever, until I force quit, or opens to the last view I was on (a grid view in Library)...then the colour wheel starts up, and again, I have to force quit.
Has anyone had this same prob...any suggestions as to what I can do to resolve it?
I have backups of the catalogue and database files from yesterday...could one or both be corrupt?
Thanks
Nige

Could be, but I'd go for the preferences file first - delete it. You'll obviously lose your preferences but it may get you back where you were.

Have just installed Mavericks and restarted the MacBook Pro. That was 3 hours ago and after logging in, I got my wallpaper and dock, but none of my desktop icons, just the spinning coloured wheel. It's been like that for 2 hours. Is this normal? What should I do, please?
I tried holding the on/off switch down to make it shut down, but when I turned it back on again, the same thing happened and none of the keys etc makes any difference.
    HELP!!!! Please.

No, what you're experiencing is not normal.
Try booting whilst holding down the Shift key - this will allow you to boot into Safe Mode, disabling third-party kernel extensions, etc. Your Mac will be slow to boot and will operate sluggishly. That's normal. If you can get in using Safe Mode then you have some start-up item that doesn't play well with Mavericks.

Hi, I tried to create a slideshow that contain more than 500 photos. Now, trying to open / execute / select the slideshow, iPhoto hangs with the spinning coloured wheel and I have only to force the deletion from System Preference. I already tried to rebuild the iPhoto Library (all the possible options) and tried to update teh version from 9.4.3 to 9.5 but the problem still persists: is there a way to delete this slideshow without selecting it ? How can I solve the problem, please?
    Kind Regards

Can you restore your iPhoto Library from a backup version, that was created before you added the slideshow?
If not, have you tried to rebuild the slideshow with iPhoto Library Manager?
As described by Terence Devlin here:  Re: iphoto library was created with an unrelased version of iphoto please quit and ugrade library by opening it in iphoto 2 or iphoto 4

  • How do I get rid of the spinning colour wheel when connecting my iphone or ipad to my mac and starting itunes?

When I connect my iphone 4 or ipad 3 and start itunes, it freezes and the arrow turns to a spinning colour wheel.  Was jailbroken in the past but have updated to latest ios and itunes.  Used to be able to sync my devices on my mac, but now it just freezes.  I uninstalled and reinstalled itunes.  Still the same thing.
Any suggestions?  Also noticed that the old apps on my iphone from the previous jailbreak are greyed out but I can not remove them by holding them and hitting the X once they are shaking.  Delete message comes up and you confirm, but they don't go away.
Thanks for any suggestions as to what I can do.

If the cloud is showing, then it is not on your phone. You can fix it where you cannot see these by going to Settings>Music>Show All Music, turn that off.

  • AOL and the spinning little wheel as the pointer

Well here we go, My nice hand me down G4 Digital Audio 10.4.5 with AOL, and there are times when certain times the pointer turns to that spinning little color wheel and I can not resume the AOL. I can however open other browsers, but the AOL freezes. Any idea how to release the spinning wheel from the AOL?
    Patrick

Well, 10.4.5 is an older version of Tiger and can be updated to 10.4.11 for free.

You might also want to do the latest security update if you haven't done that.

    General notes on Updating
Certain steps appear to minimize the risk of an update producing problems.
Number one is to make sure you have a clone backup of your computer in case you do need to back out of it again. This is the only guaranteed way of not having to worry about the results of an update.
Some like to boot from their installer discs or an external backup and verify (and if necessary repair) their internal drives as well as drive permissions. This is done with Disk Utility. You can verify a drive while booted from the same drive but sometimes this produces spurious errors. Repairing a drive (if necessary) has to be done while booted from another disk. Permissions repair can, and is probably best, done when booted from your internal drive.

You can also go to the step of booting into safe mode to do the install.

[Safe Boot takes longer than normal startup|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107394]
I like to download the update onto my computer and install it from there rather than let Software Update do it. I know a few people who had problems with doing the update via software updater found a manual install to work.
    Repair permissions again afterward.
It helps to only install one update at a time and to run the computer for a while to make sure it is behaving well.
The more cautious even like to unplug third party peripherals (see [comment by BDaqua|http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=9040746#9040746]).
Almost all of the above steps (except backup) have been questioned as to necessity because probably many people have done successful updates without doing them. I say they can't hurt, they can very likely do good (especially if your computer isn't regularly maintained), so why not do them to be safe.

After doing all that, are you running a recent version of AOL? I see from its web site that there are multiple components to it. If it were me I guess a question to ask would be is there a reason to run it at all?

  • Dropped Frames and the spinning rainbow wheel

I am using FCP 6.06, I imported video from two different video camcorders: Canon GL-2 mini-dv and a Sony Digital 8 TRV340. Importing from both of these cameras went pretty well, i had some dropped frames while importing, nonetheless it went pretty well. However, when i drop any of the footage into the timeline and I press play, it will play for a few seconds, hang up (spinning wheel) and then gives me a window that says: RT extreme has determined that these were caused by slow disks, please try: Increasing the speed of your disks, Decreasing the number of RT layers, Limiting your RT bandwith. AS of now i currently use a 1 TB Western Digital "My Book" for my scratch disk. I have tried everything I can think of and I am working on a Wedding video. I really need to get things going, I would appreciate any kind of assistance. I have tried looking up similar threads but nothing seems to really help. Thanks

    Hi -
First, verify sure your source material is ingested correctly from your two different cameras -
In your project browser, click on a clip that came from the TRV340 and, once selected, type Command + 9 to see the item properties. Either report those properties, or if easier, take a screen shot and post the screen shot of the Item Properties for that clip.
Now do the same for a source clip from the GL-2.
After that, click anywhere on the sequence timeline that you are working on and type Command + 0 (zero) to see the sequence settings. Report the sequence settings or again, if easier, just post a screen shot of the sequence settings window.
This information is needed to provide you with suggestions to a solution.
    thanks

  • After updating with the recent security patch I now have constant spinning colour wheel almost every key stroke is responded to by the wheel. Can this be fixed?

Since installing the recent security patch I am getting the spinning colour wheel on almost every keystroke in Finder and in Gmail. Any way to speed up - or is this the result of the new security measures?

It would help to give us more information. Etresoft: EtreCheck is a free app developed by one of the contributors to this forum which will generate a system report on your computer. If you can paste the report here we can take a look and see what might be the problem.

  • I'm getting the spinning color wheel only on FCP

I'm getting the spinning colour wheel but only on FCP & not Logic or iMovie.

What version is your copy of FCP X and what OS? What year is your MBP?
When do you get the lag (what are you doing when it happens)? Does it hang so you have to force quit?
Does it happen regardless of what library you open?

  • Spinning coloured wheel

Lately Ive been getting the spinning coloured wheel and the inevitable wait - which feels like ages but is probably only a few seconds - during what should be a fairly simple task, eg deleting emails from my intray.
    What's happening?
Is there a maintenance task I should carry out?
    Im running Tiger 10.4.2.
    JohnC

    Hi John.
I have a friend that purchased a 12 in. Powerbook early in 2005 or late 2004. She has a warped casing from the battery problem, although it is not that bad at all compared to some that I have been reading about on this site.
She also has the problem of the forever spinning beach ball. To describe it: the machine starts up somewhat slowly, but not really that slow. But when it gets to the login screen, it farely often will get a little bogged down entering the password. Once that is done, the machine gets slower and slower as it progresses in loading the user account. If it does finish loading the account, then it moves at the speed of the machines 12 years ago, if it doesn't freeze. But like you stated, sometimes it completes its task which shows that it actually didn't freeze. But often, it did freeze, and it is a freeze where the clock is still running, the beach ball is spinning, and force quit doesn't even work.
Another problem that the computer is having is that it is making strange beeps that sound like they are coming from the hard disk. I guess to describe them, I would almost call them Atari 2600 type, but it is a high frequency beep though. I think the people who are complaning about their computers making noise, have the same problem, just with lower frequency beeps.
It sounds like the 12-in powerbooks have been plagued with many problems since they first came out. I am curious if this is true and if it is, have they corrected them? Are they going to/trying to correct them? And if not, why has the 12-in powerbook not been taken off the market yet then?
I hope there was some useful information in there.
    Marc

  • Frequent appearance of spinning colour wheel

    Hello
My macbook is 2.5 years old, and every since the day i got it, the spinning colour wheel shows up frequently. Ive seen it so many times, I honestly thought it was normal, and nothing to worry about. However I was told that it is not a good sign Its been coming up much more often these days, and my system appears to be a lot slowed over all. I called apple and after spending 1.5 hours on the phone trying to figure out what the problem is, they concluded that everything appears to be ok, yet its still slow and the wheel still shows up frequently (as I open/close ANY application). Ive had so many problems with it in the past (replaced track pad, dead megapixels on screen and now this)
    1- What are your recommendations?
    2- Is this fixable?
    Thank You!

    Hi Grant,
    Thanks for responding.
I bought the FX 4500 card on ebay. The link is below.

The seller said the card was tested fine on a MacPro version 1,1 and OSX 10.6 before it was shipped out to me.
    Any thoughts ?

  • Pages didn't react after getting spinning colour wheel. Lost my document?

During writing in Pages, I got the spinning colour wheel and my whole imac wasn't usable any more. I could not force quit anything or save my document. Nothing reacted. I waited about 15 minutes but nothing changed, the spinning colour wheel stayed. I had no other option then to restart with the power button but of course, my document was lost. Is there somewhere on my hard drive a save copy that I can open again?
    André

Wait, did you try unplugging all your USB devices, even your keyboard and monitor, wait half an hour or so, and then plug in the monitor and keyboard again? The Force Quit might work at that point.
It appears that the spinning umbrella (beachball, whatever it is called), sometimes rears its ugly head when a driver is having trouble talking to one (or more) of the USB devices. You know, sort of like the SCSI device arbitration phases of the olden days. But raised to another level of complexity because of the USB situation.

  • Reply button spinning colour wheel

I've searched the archives on this, but cannot find a satisfactory fix (I've tried most of the suggested ones).
The very first time I open mail, and click 'reply' or 'new', I get the spinning colour wheel for a few minutes before the action completes itself. It only happens on the first 'new' or 'reply'. Subsequent uses of these buttons causes no delay. If I shut down and restart mail the issue returns (ie, spinning colour wheel the first time I compose or reply).
Despite numerous threads on this and similar experiences, there seems to be no obvious answer. Have I missed anything obvious ?
    Thanks.

If you don’t tell us what exactly have you tried, this isn’t very useful information, is it?
What type of account is this (POP, IMAP, .Mac)?
Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Network > Show: Network Port Configurations. Make sure that the configuration used to connect to Internet is at the top of the list.
Try disabling Search .Mac For Certificates in Keychain Access > Preferences if it's enabled. Take a look at the following articles for an explanation of why this could be the problem:

  • Spinning colour wheel after replacing ATI 2600 card with NVIDIA FX 4500

    Hi Everyone.
I've been using an ATI 2600 card as a temporary replacement for my damaged NVIDIA 7300T card while waiting for my NVIDIA FX 4500 card to arrive.
After the card arrived, I installed it and started the system.
After the initial Apple logo, the spinning colour wheel appeared and remained spinning for 6 hours. I switched off the system for now for fear of overheating or damage.
Do you guys and gals have any experience in this matter ?
How do I solve it and get my Mac started ?
I'm using a 1st Gen MAc bought in March 2007.
Running with 7GB RAM and Snow Leopard 10.6.7
    Sincerely,

  • Won't go past the spinning paddle wheel on power up

When I power on in the morning, why does my eMac occasionally show the Mac logo and the spinning paddle wheel forever? Sometimes it comes up normally when I restart it, sometimes it again stops with the spinning wheel. It is not consistent.
    eMac   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Hi, Louis.
By "spinning paddle wheel" I presume you are referring to the spinning gear progress indicator that appears below the grey Apple logo when you first start up the Mac.
I suggest you being troubleshooting by running at least Steps 1-3 of the Procedure outlined in my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ.
    Good luck!

When going on to iphoto and click on anything i get the curser turning to a spinning colour wheel and this goes on fo ages

If you want help you’ll need to give us more information. There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 8 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.
