Limit Volume In OS X.

Hello. My son uses a mini, he's only 4 years old and sometimes he thinks it's funny to turn the volume of his mini all the way up via the keyboard. His mother, brother and myself don't find it too ammusing. Is there a way to limit how loud the output will go? I'm looking for the same feature that my iPod has for it's volume limit. Do you know of any apps or a way to do this?

I do not believe there is a feature comparable to the iPod's volume limiter for the Mac's sound output channel, but here are some ideas that might be useful:
1. Get inexpensive, self-powered external speakers for the Mini, similar to the generic ones sold for PC's & MP3 players. (Obviously, for this application, you do not want high performance ones!) Plug them into the Mini, set the Mini's output volume to maximum, & set the speakers' volume control to a comfortable level. Tape over the volume control (or remove the knob) to prevent tampering. You may also want to tape down the plug for added security, so a speaker set with a right-angle plug would be best.
2. Create an AppleScript to monitor the output volume setting & reset it to an acceptable level whenever it is changed. The basic script is easy; the trick is making sure it keeps running or is triggered when needed....
3. Find a USB keyboard that lacks volume control keys or mechanically alter them. It might be possible to pop off the keycaps & place something under them like a washer or two to keep them from being depressed. Alternately, you might be able to use something like a rubber or similar gasket to make them hard for young fingers to depress.
4. Figure out a keyboard mapping, similar to the ones for foreign languages, that maps the volume control keys to something else, or to no key. (I have no idea if this is possible!)
Of these choices, I think the first is the easiest & the second is promising, since the script could do other things as well as reset the output volume, like playing a sound file or displaying a dialog box. Depending on what seems appropriate for your son, this could be a replacement "fun thing" or a reminder that you don't find a too loud computer funny.

  • Limit volume pedal range?

    Hopefully this is easy...
Basically, im using a Behringer FCB1010, which has 2 expression pedals.  When i put the volume pedal all the way to the floor, it makes the volume slider on the main channel strip go to +6.0db....which of course clips it and makes it sound really bad....is there a way to limit this to 0.0db globally?
    Thanks!

    Hi
In Layout mode, create a Screen controller pedal or fader, and MIDI Learn it to the FCB pedal.
In Edit mode, assign this screen control to whatever you need (at Concert, Set or Patch level as required), and then adjust the Range in the Screen Control Inspector.

  • How do I set a volume limit for apps?

My son and daughter like to use our iPhones (4 and 4S) to play with various kids apps, but they often crank the volume to the max which is both annoying and makes me concerned that we will blow out the speakers on the phone.  I know how to limit volume for music and video, but is there a way to do it for apps?

    Davidd,
The nuetralzone object work well for this problem. When the high level is reached, it will give you an alarm. On the reset of the alarm you can set to the alarm value minus a value the bin must drop before it resets the alarm.
If you are wanting a time delay, you can attach a timer object to the high level in the bin and then attach the alarm object to the timer. This will give you a time delay before the alarm becomes active. After the alarm is activated and if the high level switch resets itself, the timer will reset and a new alarm will be generated.
    Hope this helps.

  • Ipod shuffle 3rd gen volume control issue

I have IPod Touch and IPod Shuffle 3rd gen and I bought a new pair of headphones in the Apple store in London few months back and the headphones were totally fine when used in IPod Touch. Yesterday I put them into my IPod Shuffle and I am experiencing a problem with the volume - I can't put it up or down.
It's not the "limit volume" thing, I already tried that...
    Any suggestions..?

    Hey paralelopipak,
Thanks for the question. After reviewing your post, it sounds like the headphones have a volume problem only on this iPod. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help you resolve or isolate the issue.

  • Is there a volume limiter for imac

I am looking for a way to limit volume on imac so the children do not hurt their hearing.

No way to do that, are they using headphones? you can set up parenting controls to take away access to the system preferences, then make sure you turn off the sound icon in the menu bar, then you will need to change the volume keys on the keyboard.

  • I bought my Iphone 4s in Kuwait and just found out due to Kuwait regulations I do not have Facetime on my OS. When I get back to the US is there a way to down load facetime?

can anyone help me out on this issue?

Every iPhone model has an identifier that is in the firmware whch tells the OS what limitations there are.
So even if you install the latest version of iOS (which will have Facetime) your iPhone model number will tell iOS to deactivate facetime.
Sorry there is no fix to this.
It allows iPhones to be sold in countries that have special laws; some comuntries limit volume in earphones e.t.c.
There is theories as to if this was a legal requirement, or a mistake.
I wonder if it is a mistake why it has not been fixed yet.

  • Microphone voice of iPhone4 is not loud enough

I call to my parents yesterday, but they complained the voice was not loud enough.
Version is 5.11, I bought it in Apple.com 18 September.

    - Go to Settings>Sound and see if a Sound Limit is set. I
Make sure it is at max
    - EU has recently required that devices like the iPod limit volume lower to preserve hearing. Thee is no way to raise that limit.  USA and other placs to not have that limit. The limit is locked to a unique identifier on the iPod like SN so restoring does not remove it.

  • Iphone 3gs- wont allow me to set a volume limit

Try resetting your iPhone by pressing the home and sleep buttons until you see the Apple logo, ignoring the slider. Takes about 5-15 secs of button holding and you won't lose any data or settings.

  • How do I get to the Volume Limit again (iPod Red Nano)

I set this under Volume Limit in the Settings section but then when I went to change it, my thumb slipped and I accidentally set the 4 digit number for the Screen Lock (which I have not set) which was the 1st option. Now when I go back to Volume Limit to change it, I only see the Screen Lock option.
How do I get to change the volume limit again.
    iBook 500 Mhz Ser#UV1331R1LCD Mac OS X (10.4.8)

This is exactly my problem. I have a newly acquired 1st generation Nano. I followed the directions from the knowledge base to the letter. But after confirming the combination, the screen does NOT return to the volume bar to allow a change of the volume limit, and I can find no work around.
Further input would be greatly appreciated.

  • Volume, Normalize, Louder Button, Hard Limit, Equalize

I have some fairly decent and really quite beautiful recordings of live readings of classical English poetry by professional actors to which I own the copyright.  I want to put them up on one of my websites as a free offering to students and professors and anyone else interested. That means I would be saving the edited Soundbooth files as mp3s.
    I have 3 qs:
    1. When dealing with a Soundbooth file in Soundbooth, what standard of normality should I use for the volume? Should I keep my speakers at medium volume or turn them to their lowest or highest?
    2. They sound a little low at medium volume right now.  So assuming that's where the dial should be, what do I do to the file in Soundbooth? Should I select <normalize> and then <hard limit>?  Should I click 2x on the <louder button> to make them louder and reach <hard limit>?  Should I simply click on the <equalize> button? Should I click on the <equalize> button and then on something else?  Is there a right way of doing this?
    3. If not. Can anyone volunteer how he/she would go with this?  Each of the above in my #2 seems to give a different result.
    Best & thanks,
    Karla

    @Dave_LaRonde Mylenium
Thanks guys. I know AE's audio capabilities are severely malnourished. So... I accept that there is NOT a solution inside AE for my question. I know there are infinite ways to batch process audio outside of AE. We use Audition, and some nice VST plugins... so, IF we had the luxury of mastering audio outside of AE, we would. We do as much normalizing as possible before we include files into the audio libraries: sample/bit rates, mono, hard limiting, etc.
Our workflow is such that we have a vast library of audio variables that are sitting on a server. We receive a data set from our client that indicates which specific audio variables to incorporate into an AE project. Then our visual elements are also scripted (specifically text layers, captions) to correspond to the audio. (Think audio/visual mad libs).... We can't possibly build all the combinations and master them in advance.
Our workflow is: receive data, run script, import relevant audio files into an .aep, edit corresponding text layer values, render, deliver to corresponding target recipient (each one getting a unique video). It's kind of a realtime workflow, meaning the whole process takes about 5 minutes to return 1000s of customized video experiences. Does that make sense?
Anyway, I really value both your experience in AE. I'm using new Adobe ID, so I look like a new guy, but have been using the forums for a couple years and often found your answers and insights to be most helpful! Thanks.

  • Volume limit not going higher than about 75% ?

Hi, I just bought an iPod Classic 160GB after my trusty 30GB Video died, and I was denied service.
I seem to be having a little problem with it. When I try and put the volume limit all the way up, it sounds louder then it was, but when I want to accept this setting, the limit jumps back to about 75%, even though the selection arrow is all the way at the right?
I could really use this, since when I'm listening to certain podcasts, I have trouble hearing them when I'm on the train or bike.
    Is this a bug?
I currently find myself turning up the volume limit without accepting, and waiting for the currently playing track, which is a very clumsy way of doing it.

Don't even think about it. As b-rock states, you cannot over-ride it and you cannot install "American firmware" onto your ipod. Apple have taken steps to prevent anyone over-riding the volume cap.
However, what you can do is buy yourself an external headphone amplifier. There are several different options, such as the famous CMoy amp (usually mounted in an Altoids tin and also known as the Altoids amplifier), or simply search online for headphone amplifier.
Personally, I own both an Altoids amp and a FiiO E11 amplifier. The Altoids amp runs on a 9volt battery, and can be purchased ready-made or as a kit to build yourself if you have the skills. The FiiO has a rechargeable phone battery in it, which is replaceable.
It would be irresponsible of me if I did not caution you to take care when you using one of these amplifiers, not to have it too loud for too long, which could seriously damage your hearing. (Hence the reason for the EU directive.)
I found that the benefit of one of these amps is to be able to hear the detail in the music, and not simply to have it loud. Because of that, I prefer the FiiO.
I do not receive any reward or compensation for my recommendation of either of these products. There are alternative brands available.

  • Volume Limit

I have a 60 GB video Ipod and there seems to be a problem with the volume limit settings. I followed the instuctions for changing volume limit on this site but it changes back to the default setting when I set it to be louder. When I scroll the volume to max, the triangle moves to max but the volume bar does not stay on max after I confirm the setting. Can anyone help me with this?

That seems to be the way it works on mine. My blue triangle is all the way to the right and I generally only have to set the volume to about 40-50%. I ride noisy public transit and have no problem with the volume.

  • Volume limit and contact

    Hi
does anybody have a problem with Volume limit in iphone
i set the limit and lock it but still nothing happens?
    ne suggestions
Also does anybody know how to create contact groups in Iphone 3g

Connect the iPod to your computer an start iTunes.
In the summary Tab of the iPod page in iTunes you will see the 'Restore' option.
This will erase the entire contents of your iPod and reinstall the software for you.
Before you do that though, just try connecting the iPod to the computer and opening iTunes as this is supposed to unlock the iPod as described here :-
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302255
    Unlocking iPod
You can unlock iPod in one of two ways:
Enter the combination on iPod using the same controls you used to set the combination. If you do not enter the correct combination, the digits onscreen flash red. When you enter the combination correctly, iPod will unlock and return you to the last viewed screen.
Connect iPod to the primary computer you use it with (the first one iPod synced with), and open iTunes. When you disconnect iPod from the computer, it will no longer be locked.
If you can't unlock iPod using either of these methods, you can restore your iPod to factory settings. Please note that this will erase all data on your iPod. Afterwards, you can add your music and data back to iPod.
If you want to change the primary computer that your iPod is associated with, do this:
Restore your iPod. Warning: The restore process cannot be undone. All of your songs and files will be deleted. Always make a backup of your important data.
Connect your iPod to the computer that you want to be the primary computer.
    Open iTunes and synchronize.

  • Why is the sound low on my Ipod?  When I have my earbuds in I have to have the volume almost all the way up.  I have the volume limit maxed out also.  Same thing when I plug it into a boombox

Why does my Ipod play at a low volume?  When I have my earbuds in I have to have it at almost full volume, and when I plug it into a boombox it doesn't play as loud as the radio or a cd.  I have the volume limit turned all the way up in the settings also.  All my songs on my Ipod were burned from cd's(if that helps) thanks.

Sorry, I have the same issue.
So far searching threads here is not coming up with anything.
I have set aside my restore discs, to start the process of ripping the drive clean.
I tried Omni Sweep, but all it did was confirm the space I counted up.
Still does not show what's hidding. 113GB worth on mine.
That software really boggs down the system.
I could not load an email with it running.
    Good LUck as well.
