[linux-3.2] watchdog: error registering /dev/watchdog
Today, kmod replaced module-init-tools, and after upgrading my system, noticed this error after udev loaded:
Jan 6 07:44:41 localhost kernel: [ 4.528051] watchdog: INTCAMT: cannot register miscdev on minor=130 (err=-16).
Jan 6 07:44:41 localhost kernel: [ 4.528088] watchdog: error registering /dev/watchdog (err=-16).
Jan 6 07:44:41 localhost kernel: [ 4.528113] mei: unable to register watchdog device.
Thankfully, nothing else happened and my system didn't go kaput. But reading the manpage, watchdog does appear to be important. Since udev errors were expected with the kmod upgrade, and this error never occurred before today (checked my /var/log/everything.log), it appears kmod is the likely culprit.
Edit: Tried posting this to the ML, and discovered that the general public does not have write access to the ML. So if some developer thinks this is important, hopefully that person will see this post.

I finally found some time to dig in the kernel source a bit and found that I was wrong. Sorry for the confusion. There's nothing wrong with the Intel MEI watchdog driver and the softdog is not involved at all. The truth is that the watchdog core functions only support 1 watchdog device via /dev/watchdog [1]. If the iTCO_wdt driver would use the watchdog core [2], we'd get the correct "only one watchdog can use /dev/watchdog." message and the IMEI watchdog registration would not be attempted. But it doesn't. It registers in a different way [3] and so the core does not "know" about another watchdog being already registered, attempts to register the IMEI watchdog and fails with the confusing "cannot register miscdev..." message.
The bottom line is that the kernel supports only one watchdog and we (administrators) have to decide which device we want to use.

This happens in LOGIC, GARAGEBAND, and when using FIREFOX.
When this ERROR occurs all AUDIO is dropped out for a split second.
I cannot work with audio drop outs - as I do recording.

Virtual Box error: error mounting /dev/sda1 on /mnt
Hello folks,
After getting fed up with Ubuntu's bloated setup, I was trying to switch to Arch linux. But before that I wanted to try it in Virtual Box. I was using Arch Linux Core image for this. But after setting up file system and mountpoint I am getting this error:
error mounting /dev/sda1 on /mnt
The steps I followed:
1. Source: Core local
2. Editor: Nano
3. Clock: As usual
4. Prepare hard drive:
a) Manually Partition (as this is what I will be doing during actual installation)
b) /dev/sda
c) New partition on all space available on virtual machine, making it primary, bootable, Type: Linux Extended (option 85).
d) Write partition and Quit and Done
5. Manually configure block device, filesystems and mountpoints.
a) dev
b) Do not recreate file system.
c) Set ext4 format and mount point, ignoring swap space or seperate /boot partition.
d) Now when I goto next step as Done, It gives an error : Error mounting /dev/sda1 on /mnt/.
Is there any problem with creating the filesystem as I have done? Can anyone shed some light if there is any particular configuration needed for virtual machine. I searched the forum for other options. But none of them seem applicable for me.
Thank you for your time. What host os and CPU are you using? The message states that you need virtualization hardware support in the CPU (Intel VT-x or AMD-V) in order to run that 64 bit guets OS. Reasons for this error (that I could think of) could be:
- you have a very old cpu
- you have disabled virtualization in your bios
- you are running a 32-bit host os

Compiling VMtools on Oracle Linux 6.2 gives errors
I am trying to compile the vmtools on a Oracle Linux 6.2 VMware installation. I'm getting strange compilation errors on all the vmtools. Log pasted below.
I have found thread VMware Tools and Oracle Linux Howto and followed the items in there with no help and no change.
yum -y install kernel-headers is all up to date
yum -y install kernel-devel is all up to date
Here are the issues I see:
1. Compiling the shared folder says linux/smp_lock.h does not exist, and then fails with SPIN_LOCK_UNLOCKED undeclared and unknow field `get_sb'
2. The network device driver fails in vmxnet.c
3. The vmblock module fails in dentry.c
4. The communication service fails in vmci_drv.c
5. The VM communication interface fails in vmci_drv.c
6. The X configuration is skipped because there are "no drivers for X.ora version: 7.9.6" (see the bottom of the log below).

Enjoy,
--the VMware teamActually, I did exactly that:
yum -y install gcc
yum -y install kernel-uek-devel-`uname -r`
yum -y install kernel-uek-headers-`uname -r`
The headers with the uname gave an error that the headers do not exist. The others ran fine.
I did:
yum -y install kernel-uek-headers
and that worked.
However, NONE of this changed the errors - they were exactly the same before and after. The problem is still not resolved.
However, I did try a different approach. I found the VMware Operating System Packages (OSPs) through the following link: http://www.vmware.com/download/packages.html. I installed that, and it seemed to work fine.
The problem that we had, which was the original reason why I wanted to have the VMware tools, was that the disk was sized too small and I thought with the tools we could resize the disk. It didn't work, we could not edit the size in the VMware console. So we ended up blowing away that VM and are in the process of recreating it at a larger size. I'll take a snapshot of the state before the OSP install so I can test the compile version in case someone posts something useful here. -
I downloaded and extracted the latest ESR file (Version 10.0.7) this morning. Running SETUP.EXE with no command line switches fails to install Firefox. Ths installation log indicates that the installation has taken 1 second to complete execution. In the Installation log I see the following:
DLL Registration
** ERROR Registering: C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\AccessibleMarshal.dll **
In the C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox folder there is an uninstall folder as well as an install.log file. No other files or folders exist. Mozilla Firefox does appear in the Programs and Features but shows an icon associated with an unknown application.
I am logged in with a low-rights account but running the SETUP.EXE executable from an elevated command prompt. This should be sufficient to elevate the DLL registration.
Running on Windows 7 SP1 with all applicable updates. I've noticed several other people that have experienced this issue but nobody has a solution.

Got it from http://itnewscast.com/register-oracle-vm-manager-oracle-enterprise-manager-12c
very good documentation

ERROR: Device '/dev/sda3' not found.
This is my first time compiling a custom kernel. I am trying to compile zen kernel 3.12.3. Whenever I try to boot it up, it says this:
ERROR: device '/dev/sda3' not found. Skipping fsck
ERROR: Unable to find root device '/dev/sda3'
Then it drops me to a recovery shell. When I look at the contents of '/dev' none of my partitions are found on sda. '/dev/sda' is listed but nothing else. Has anybody else had this problem? /i have read various fixes but none of them have helped.
Sorry this is my first post.
Thanks in advance.Well, the whole point of the initramfs is to have it load the necessary modules to mount the rootfs. So if mkinitpcio complains that there are no modules to put in there, that is pretty problematic.
I think you should take a look at the PKGBUILD for the official Arch kernel. It includes a few lines that allow you to use menuconfig or nconfig or whatever, prior to that actual 'make'. I think that any time you install things to your system, you should probably be leveraging the package manager in order to properly track the files. This is particularly true when you are an Arch user and the creation of packages is so damn easy. -
SSL error Registering on Oracle Linux Network
I performed the following actions using Linux v4 update 4.
[root@as1 ~]# rpm --import /usr/share/rhn/RPM-GPG-KEY
[root@as1 ~]# up2date nox register
There was an SSL error: [('SSL routines', 'SSL3_GET_SERVER_CERTIFICATE', 'certificate verify failed')]
A common cause of this error is the system time being incorrect. Verify that the time on this system is correct.
I check the time and date. They are correct to the second.
Any suggestions on how to proceed? Also , if i choose to ignore all these massages, database is installed. But, startup command fails giving following error :
ORA-01078: failure in processing system parameters
LRM-00109: could not open parameter file '/scratch/nnaveen/installations/ora_db11.2.0.1.0/product/11.2.0/dbhome_1/dbs/initorcl.us.oracle.com.ora'
I guess its one of the side effect of database configuration assistant not working properly

In a competitor's product, I am able to set the schema location and name of the PLAN_TABLE in the preferences. This is important because there is no shared PLAN_TABLE in the databases I use. Is there a way to point SQL Developer to the PLAN_TABLE in
