Not as such. You could do some hokus pokus with your partitions, depending on what layout you have them in, but we'd need a lot more information from you before we could advise you on that.
What layout have you got your partitions in? (e.g. sda1 = 5GB root, sda2 = 20GB /home, etc...?)
If your / and /home partitions are adjacent, how much space are you using in /home?
Do you have important information on /home that you really need to keep?
Do you have anywhere you can back these files up to while you're messing with your partitions?
Do you have a LiveCD (or USB) to hand which you can use to make changes to your partitions?
/home is 280GB. / is 5gb /swap 8 GB and /boot 1GB  I have Gparted live. And i don't want to keep anything so i don't need backup.

  • Slow Shutdown on all Linux kernels but not on Linux-lts kernel

    Been having this problem since the beginning of my Linux experience with Arch.
    This is my uname -r output:
    3.8.6-1-ARCH
    This problem only happens on Linux main kernel, and never happen in Linux-lts kernel. Tried using the method mentioned in the wiki to produce a shutdown log and this is what I got:

    My current hypotheses is the acpi_cpufreq that make this problem happens because when I booted into the lts kernel that module is not even loaded. But I can't even blacklist it because even if I make a modprobe.conf to disable it from loading it still be loaded automatically by the kernel. Any help here will be greatly appreciated, I'm not a "just post any problem before trying myself" person. I've tried every method by reading wikis and forums without any success, this is even my first post here . But this problem has been troubling me for a very long time. So please help me guys
    Tell me what information do I miss and I'll post it immediately.

    Did a fresh install and still having the same problem. Giving up now. Mod can now close this thread

  • Can OAS9i and Portal be installed on Linux RedHat(kernel 2.2.19) platform?

    Hi,
    My question is the same as the subject written.
    Can OAS9i and Portal be installed on Linux RedHat(kernel 2.2.19) platform? Basically, first, I can't find the OAS9i "*.cp" image files for RedHat Kernel 2.2.16 or later use, second, what I can download from OTN site is V1.0.2.2.1 which is for Linux RedHat Kernel 2.4.3-12 or later use. And I downloaded all the files which OAS9i version is V1.0.2.2.1, and failed to install on my platform. So I want to know is there anybody installing OAS9i and Portal successfully on RedHat 6.2(Kernel 2.2.19, glibc 2.1.3)? Or can share on other RedHat version had any successful installation processes or suggestion. Thanks in advance.
    Regards!
    Frank

  • Will Oracle 10.1.0.2 be ok after upgrading linux e3 kernel to 2.4.21-53.EL

    Hi, all
    I have an oracle 10g(10.1.0.2) database running on a linux server (RedHat Linux e3). The linux kernel is 2.4.21-20.ELsmp.
    Because we need to upgrade the ASM to make the backup stuff run well, we have to upgrade the linux kernel. The latest linux e3 kernel is 2.4.21-53.ELsmp, but the latest ASMlib 2.0 driver is for 2.4.21-52.ELsmp.
    Could I upgrade the ASM under the -53 kernel? Or we have to install the -52 kernel?
    Thanks a lot!

    Whether you can is far less important than whether you should.

  • Linux-libre kernel + b43 wifi driver

    I decided to try the linux-libre kernel from AUR, and I ran into an issue with the b43 driver. My card is supported by the b43 driver, I have been using it without any issues on the vanilla kernel, but the linux-libre kernel hiccups with the firmware.
    When I try to do something with my wifi card under linux-libre, it complains that it can't find "b43-open/unicode15.fw". I decided to copy said file from "/lib/firmware/b43/" to "/lib/firmware/b43-open/", but it complained that the firmware was proprietary. After doing a bit of research on Google, I came across several pages that I needed to use b43-tools and the openfwwf firmware. This combination gives me a 'unicode5.fw', not a 'unicode15.fw' (note that one is a 5, and the other is a 15, linux-libre asks for 15). I decided to try to copy it over anyway, without changing the name, and removed the proprietary file (unicode15.fw) from "/lib/firmware/b43-open/", but it went back to asking for "b43-open/unicode15.fw".
    I did unload/reload the b43 driver after each firmware file move (modprobe -rv b43 && sleep 5 && modprobe -v b43). What I did not try was renaming 'unicode5.fw' to 'unicode15.fw', I didn't think that made any sense to try, since obviously they could be quite different and might cause problems.
    I have not been able to find any other suggestions on Google, so if anybody has any suggestions, please let me know.
    BTW, here's the lspci entry for my card (again, it works fine under vanilla kernel) (hopefully this forum supports code blocks, I don't see any buttons for it):
    02:00.0 Network Controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g LP-PHY (rev 01)

    You have a Broadcom card of core_rev 15 and you would need a ucode15.asm to build ucode15.fw binary. Unfortunately, it seems openfwwf project has been able to reverse engineer just revision 5 of these cards (ucode5.asm).
    Please note s/unicode/ucode. ucode = microcode. Unicode doesn't make sense in this context.

  • Simple compare condition fails [Solved: Bug 4619731]

    Edit: I have found the root of the problem, and Simple compare condition fails [Solved: Bug 4619731]. I have opened a Service Request 7045745.993 on the problem.
    Original text:
    I have encountered the most bizarre bug today. An associate is trying to debug a 1900 line package that was NOT terminating a loop properly.
    The package has the code:
        Exit when x <> y;where x and y are VARCHAR2(8) variables.
    The problem is that even though the values were UNequal, the loop never ended. We added dbms_output debugging code to display x and y, and we could easily see that their values were NOT equal.
    For instance, one was 19824E1A and the other was 19824E2A. Or one was 19824E1A while the other was 99999999.
    I even added a block of code re-testing the condition like this:
      If x <> y then
        dbms_output.put_line(x||'<>'||y);
      Else
        dbms_output.put_line(x||'='||y);
      End if;But no matter what the values of x and y, it always reported them equal.
    I found two workarounds:
    1. concatenate a character (I used a period) to the end of each variable in the condition.
        Exit when x||'.' <> y||'.'2. Or, add an anonymous block before or after the Exit when..., such as:
    Declare
      v varchar2(2);
    Begin
      v := 'AB';
    End;Curiously, when I replaced the v := 'AB'; with NULL;, the bug came back.
    This bug occurs on Oracle Database 10g Enterprise Edition Release 10.2.0.3.0
    I am not sure where to start to try to solve or report this problem. It pretty much destabilizes the entire PL/SQL programming foundation for all our packages. It leaves me wondering where else the code may be failing.
    Has anyone seen something like this reported before?
    Edited by: Steve Cosner on Aug 27, 2008 10:05 PM

    No offense taken, SY. I was just trying to express how aware I am of the issue of comparing null values in condition statements.
    All I can do here is underscore that it is not an issue with null values. The problem is with the statement in the first line. To prove that it was not null values, I coded the second line following the first:
        exit when x <> y;
        dbms_output.put_line('x='||x ||' and y='||y);The output from the run showed in the first pass through the loop, x and y were equal and were not null. So the process ran correctly that time. But in subsequent passes through the loop, they were NOT equal and were not null, but the debugging code was executed.
    There is no way the values were null.
    I certainly wondered about the null issue when I concatenated a character to the variables in the conditional test. But my debugging lines first confirmed that they were not null. I suspect more that the bug has something to do with the size of the package and the variables being exactly eight characters, which is 64 bits, which has special significance in many computer languages.
    Regarding your concern of the variable names and scope issues, the actual variable names in the actual code can be seen below (I just used x and y for simplicity within this thread):
        LOOP
          EXIT WHEN V_LAST_PERIOD <>
              SIPK0003.COURSE_ADJUST_REC.ACAD_REC_PERIODwhile the silly anonymous block that caused the process to work, using the variable named v, was the actual code. There is no way we use simple one-character variable names in a 1900 line package. There is no way the scope of variable V extended outside the embedded anonymous block. My point was that somehow, changing the size of the compiled package object, or at least the size of the code generated for the loop process caused the package to run correctly. In fact, thinking about the
    Declare V... Begin Null; End; sequence, I'll bet the PL/SQL compiler is sharp enough to notice that it was a do-nothing block, so never included it in the compiled object. As soon as I assigned V a value, the code WAS included, so the size of the generated code for the loop changed, and somehow, that caused it to run correctly.
    Regarding the use of the package.record.column value above, we even copied the value to a local variable, and then used the local variable in the Exit When statement. Doing that made no difference.

  • Linux-one - kernel for acer aspire one

    i'm recently bought an acer aspire one d255e and found the linux-one kernel in the AUR. linux-one
    i would like to know what your comments, tips and improvements are.
    i'm not the maintainer of the package just an user. I will try to build this kernel this afternoon and post some comments.
    please feel free to comment if this kernel work in your acer aspire one and what modification you have done in the config to get your aao working.
    cheers

    I have a aao 532h with an Atom N450 processor and use the kernel-netbook package which also supports Atom N550 processors. It works 'out of the box' on my machine and the only thing I would think to check in the config for yours is support for your graphics which I believe is Intel GMA 3150.
    I haven't tried the linux-one package as it's for the first aao netbook that came out which didn't have bluetooth.

  • Safe to remove linux kernel when using linux-lts kernel?

    I'm using the `linux-lts` kernel on my work machine (less reboots after updates); I know in theory it should be safe to remove the normal `linux` kernel (and it's dependencies) but does anyone know if it is safe in practice? Nothing that assumes there will always be a `linux` package because without it there couldn't be a running system?

    This should be as easy to figure out, as comparing dependencies can be:
    linux-lts:
    Required By (5)
    archboot
    nvidia-lts
    r8168-lts
    virtualbox-archlinux-modules-lts
    virtualbox-modules-lts
    linux:
    Required By (15)
    archboot
    cdfs
    fcpci
    fcpcmcia
    lirc
    ndiswrapper
    nvidia
    open-vm-tools-modules
    r8168
    rt3562sta
    vhba-module
    virtualbox-archlinux-modules
    virtualbox-archlinux-modules (testing)
    virtualbox-modules
    virtualbox-modules (testing)
    That might mean, most notably, that infrared ports and cdemu-driven image mounts won't work with the lts kernel (or at least should not without pulling in the normal kernel).

    I added nosmp and the other parameters at the install/rescue cd's suggestion. I tried using the microcode package (I have a P4 HT) as suggested by someone in another thread.
    I've found that the freezes will happen at the beginning of heavy CPU or disk usage (such as compilation or pacman db parsing). The hd is not the original one from this system (it was a hand-me-down), so I don't think that's the problem. The video card is different and the RAM is new. The only components that are still around are:
    P4 HT processor (2.60 ghz)
    Albatron  PX865PE II
    Enermax power supply
    Any ideas? It also says "bad eip value" when the system has kernel crashes (especially on boot).

  • [SOLVED] Arch Linux Boot from USB fails while loading kernel

    I am attempting to get arch linux booting off my usb. I use cfdisk to create a /dev/sdb1 partition then use mkfs.ext4 /dev/sdb1, mount the usb, pacstrap it, use install-syslinux_update -iam, generate fstab and then attempt to boot from it.
    The boot extracts the kernel but then complains that DEVICE is missing in the option APPEND root=DEVICE (in syslinux.cfg). I looked in /dev/disk (on the temporary filesystem shell), it showed my ssd and cd drive but not the usb. Does anyone know what could be causing the USB to not load in that particular section of the kernel?

    I will reboot and get that lsmod output.
    Since you'll probably want to boot from different computers (portable USB system), you want to remove 'autodetect' from that line. This is the same as always booting the initramfs-linux-fallback.img image. To save some space, you could remove 'autodetect' from the configuration file, disable the fallback image in /etc/mkinitcpio.d/linux.preset  and delete initramfs-linux.img (otherwise, you'll get two identical images).
    Of course, run mkinitcpio -P when you're done.

    Thanks for following up on this.  For those who haven't seen it yet, here is an excerpt from CK's blog regarding this:
    Con Kolivas wrote:Unfortunately it took me quite a while to find since I had to dig deep into figuring out how the whole system of timers works on a low level in the kernel before finally stumbling across one tiny piece of accounting/reporting that was missing on BFS. It's funny that a bug that directly affected almost no one should be so hard to track down. In the meantime it allowed me to tweak a number of bits of internal accounting so hopefully that should have improved as well.
    Plz mark your thread as solved if it is so.

  • [SOLVED] Custom kernel, init fails.

    I've been trying to get xen (community/xen package) working for quite some time now and I'm quite stuck. Raid support is built in to the dom0 kernel but it was missing support for my sata chipset (sata_nv) so it didn't see my drives. I downloaded the xenified kernel sources from xen.org and recompiled the kernel with the dom0 config in /boot/. Now it sees the drives but init crashes with.
    (had to type this so I skipped quite a lot of the dump and there might be typos)
    Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at 0000000000000000 RIP:

    [<ffffffff8020a870>] system_call+0x0/0x6d
    This doesn't happen with the kernel provided in the package and the only thing that has been changed from the provided configuration is the sata driver. I'm really lost with this, if somebody knows how to build a working xen dom0 kernel I could use some insight. If you need more info just ask thou I don't have much to give since I don't have any kind of logs.
    EDIT: Actually it might happen even with the provided kernel, I'm not sure if it gets that far before failing because it can't find my hds.
    EDIT2: Changed the topic to a little more descriptive one since my questions doesn't really have anything to do with raid 5 .
    EDIT3: Changed topic as below it doesn't seem to have anything to do with xen.

    Ok I finally managed to boot in to XEN. I modified the PKGBUILD for the xen package to generate the generic XEN kernel (no different kernels for dom0 and domU). Here's the PKGBUILD I used.
    pkgname=xen
    pkgver=3.1.2
    _kernelver=2.6.18
    pkgrel=2
    pkgdesc="a Virtual Machine Monitor (VMM)"
    arch=(i686 x86_64)
    url="http://xen.xensource.com"
    license=("GPL")
    depends=('iproute' 'bridge-utils' 'python' 'sdl' 'zlib' 'e2fsprogs' 'mercurial' 'patch')
    source=(http://archlinux-stuff.googlecode.com/files/xen-$pkgver.tar.bz2 \
            http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/ … r.tar.bz2)
    md5sums=('04d3d8d1d57868282a21698559410cc4'
             '296a6d150d260144639c3664d127d174')
    build() {
      cd $startdir/src/xen-3.1-testing.hg
      mv ../linux-$_kernelver.tar.bz2 .
      make KERNELS="linux-2.6-xen" world || return 1
      make KERNELS="linux-2.6-xen" DESTDIR=$startdir/pkg install || return 1
      ( cd $startdir/pkg/etc && mv init.d rc.d ) || return 1
      rm -f $startdir/pkg/usr/share/man/man1/qemu-img.1* \
            $startdir/pkg/usr/share/man/man1/qemu.1* \
            $startdir/pkg/lib/modules/$_kernelver-xen/build \
            $startdir/pkg/lib/modules/$_kernelver-xen/source
    I also did mkinitcpio -k 2.6.18 -g /boot/kernel26xen.img, don't know if that's needed but I'm not going to test it now .

  • [SOLVED]Linux 3.10.6 fails to detect network interfaces, input devices

    I upgraded my ASUS laptop to Linux 3.10.6 and I can no longer use my mouse or keyboard in a desktop environment. A USB mouse faired no better. The keyboard works in console mode. I've done a couple reboots and a good deal of searching online, but no one seems to have the same problem. My first inclination was that udev was no longer running, but a quick "ps -aux | grep udev" revealed that systemd-udevd was running, but not udev itself. Is it safe to start it manually? My network interfaces have also disappeared, BTW, and the font size in console mode has also changed (size has increased, font is fuzzier). Any ideas?
    EDIT: I do have the loopback interface.
    lsmod shows:

    Does your running kernel match what pacman has installed?  Do uname -r and compare that against the version of pacman -Q linux.  If they are different, reboot.

  • Xen Kernel randomly fails to load and goes out of range

    Been having an on/off issue lately that requires a hard reset of my system.  Essentially what happens is the system begins to load when my monitor reports an error that the signal is out of range.  I try to pretend login and reboot, but it does not work.  Instead, I am forced to simply reset the system and once reset it appears to boot OK without any issues.  In fact I can go a few reboots before once again it decides to break.  Below is what should be one of the logs from a failed boot, in fact, the system is in this same failed state right now as well.

  • Kernel upgrade issues (missing kernel modules?) [SOLVED]

    A couple of days ago I set up a new system.
    Worked just fine so far. However, today after a kernel upgrade I got these issues:

    you get the idea.
    Now upon inspection of my system I found that my /lib/modules/3.3.8-1-ARCH/kernel/ looks like this:
    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 24 Jun 5 09:30 extramodules -> ../extramodules-3.3-ARCH
    drwxr-xr-x 12 root root 4096 Jun 5 09:29 kernel

    -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 355147 Jun 5 09:29 modules.symbols.bin
    so it makes sense that the directory and files are not found. The question is where is the problem?
    Was my Arch web install bad or is there a problem with today's kernel upgrade?

    Terminator & Gcool,
    Thank you both for your help.
    I ended up following the link Terminator posted in his reply and I was able to solve the problem.
    Unlike pineapple-biku (in the aforementioned thread) I did not chroot my machine I just:
    pacman -S udev
    pacman -S mkinitcpio
    mkinitcpio -p linux
    pacman -S linux
    and that solved the problem.
    It's odd, however, the number of people having similar problems upgrading the kernel ... seems like there is a bug somewhere that seems to
    affect people that "meet certain criteria".
    Thanks gain guys!!

    Note that all the missing modules are '.ko', rather than the gzipped '.ko.gz' that you should expect with the arch kernel. This indicates that depmod failed when you installed the kernel.
