Lion server file sharing issue with windows API read/write ini file (GetPrivateProfileString)

Hello,
I try to config lion server as file server for a windows application we use at work. All other computers are windows 7 or XP, lion server is the only mac. I choose lion server because it's size, quality and personal love of apple products.
10.7.2 lion server's samba file sharing works almost perfectly with all my windows machines, I can copy, delete, modify any text files or office files without any issue, but the most important windows application for my business doesn't work with samba file sharing. After some digging, I found it is because windows program can't read or write INI file stored on lion share. Windows API GetPrivateProfileString always returns empty if the INI file is store on lion share.
You can download a small application for read/write windows INI file from codeproject.com to test this problem:
http://www.codeproject.com/KB/files/ini.aspx
I can open/edit the in file using any text editor without any problem. The only problem is with those windows APIs. ACL is turned on for my lion share and assigned "delete" rights to samba users.
I install samba3 on the same server; it works perfectly with windows API. My windows program also works. Looks like there is something wrong with lion server's sambax.
I'd prefer to use built-in samba even I have samba3 working. Built-in samba is very immature right now, but considered how young it is, I will give apple some time to make it mature.
Does anyone have same issue or knows how to fix it?
Thanks,
Michael.

All the memory is fine. The server rarely if ever goes down when there are only around 10-12 users connected. When there are 20+ users connected and working heavily it goes down often. When I say working heavily, I mean they are transferring huge files to the SAN (100GB+), sometimes 5 at a time per user, and there are a bunch of others who are reading large video files at a minimum of 220MB/sec from the SAN.
Though this worked on Snow Leopard without any issues, Lion just doesn't seem to be able to handle it. The odd thing is, on Snow Leopard there was only a single 1GB ethernet connection to a NAS system, whereas with Lion we have a much more powerful machine with a 6-port 10GB ethernet card and a 4 lane 8GB fiber card to a true SAN. You would think that the newer scenario with Lion would handle far more users with ease.
So far, very disappointing with regards to Lion's file serving performance.

  • New to Mac - File sharing issue with windows PC?

    Good day
I have a win7 pc with all my movies storred on.  I shared the folder on the network, and can access the folder from my windows pc and my MacMini.
The problem is that my MacMini does not pic up all the files/folders on the shared folder.  I would guess it only picks up about 80% of the files/folders.  When I connect to the shared folder from the windows 7 pc it picks up everything.
    More info:
    Win7 Home (all updates done)
3tb drive (not sure what you call it, but it was formated with NTFS guid table)
Full read Write share enabled to everyone
    MacMini Latest hardware and OSX.
Shared folder shows in shared part of finder.
Already did a restart of both PC and Mac
Already did a clean-up on mac.
The mac connects via wi-fi and win pc via ethernet
Please help me on what more I can try

I've seen this a long time ago, seems SMB on the Mac was limited to the number of listings, if you Share an inner folder, does OSX show more files in that folder?
No idea if this works in 10.8, but will mention it...

Did you lose your shared folders with the update of Mac OS X from Snow Leopard to Lion? You can’t see your shared folders from your DVR or Medicaneter boxes hooked up to your TV? The internet tells you to install gigabytes of developer tools and use tons of command-line instructions to regain the ability to see your mac from your other devices in the house after moving to Lion? We might be able to help.

  • I believe I found the fix solving home sharing issues with Windows 7

I was having a problem with my Windows 7 PC while trying to connect iTunes home sharing and my Apple TV.  While speaking to Apple support, the tech told me that home sharing uses port 3689.  I searched the web and found this link explaining how to open a port on your PC.  The issue seems to be with Windows firewall, or the anti virus software controlling the Windows firewall.  I use Norton anti virus so when I opened the Windows firewall selection in the control panel, the Norton window opened and the fix was identical to the one shown in this link.  http://maximumpcguides.com/windows-7/open-a-port-in-windows-7s-firewall/
Follow the instructions on the page and for step #7, enter 3689.  When you get to step #10, I typed in "Apple TV Home Sharing" so I could identify the port later on.  I made these changes, rebooted the computer, started iTunes, turned on the Apple TV and everything worked.  Try it and this should solve what seems to be a common problem.

Solved - at least all good so far.
I had to add rules to my firewall software (Symantec Endpoint Protection) for Bonjour (UDP 5353) and DAAP (TCP 3689).  Once I did that, the other librares were shown in SHARING and the Apple TV reliably connects.
What I don't understand was why it worked at all without the rules in place.

  • OSX Lion 10.7.4 issue with Windows shares when renaming folders

    Hi,
Can anyone tell me if its an known issue when a user logs into a smb share with his AD credentials and when trying to rename a folder which he has permissions to, hes unable to do so and osx prompts for login details. When user enters the correct login it prompts them again and therefore he's unable to rename the folder.
There are also other folders under the main folder and some of those he's able to rename with no problem so this problem only occurs sometimes.
AD is on Windows Server 2008 R2 with all updates installed and OSX Lion users also have the latest updates.
Any help regarding the issue is welcome, thank you!

I think there's nothing to do with the drive manufacturer,
I used the macDrive for windows, and format it to HFS(not HFS+)
    Ok,
    Actually I have this folder/files,
    InstallMacOSX.pkg (folder)
    Inside InstallMacOSX.pkg(folder) it has files:
InstallESD.dmg(using ULTRAISO was burned to dvd)
This files are NOT included in the burn dvd image:
    Bom
    PackageInfo
    Payload
    Scripts
    This files/folder is outside InstallMacOSX.pkg(folder):
    Distribution(file)
    [TOC].xml(file)
    Resources(folder)
The original .DMG file was MOsXLeoneDieciSetteDue.dmg(but this is fake, it's a Xar compressed)
The valid .DMG file is inside the .XAR, so I extracted it, and found those files and folders.
So, I'll include that in the burned dvd?
    thanks

  • Home Sharing issues with Windows PCs

I've had an Apple TV2 for over a year.  It has been working fine with no issues at all.  I use an old laptop running WinXP as my "media server" and it has worked fine up until the last few of months.
Progressively, over the last 2-4 months it has become less reliable when trying to access content on iTunes on it.  The laptop itself has otherwise been reliable.  It is just the Apple TV talking to it that has been not.  Sometimes it works fine, other times as I go through the menus I get 'Loading "library"...' for up to a couple of minutes and it then drops out.
The first time it started becoming unreliable was shortly after a Windows Update.  I rolled back the update with System Restore and it went back to working well.  I didn't have another problem until I applied the latest set of Windows Updates (a month or so later, hoping the issues had been fixed).  Again, it broke, so I rolled back.  Last week after it has been running well, Windows crashed and when it recovered AppleTV/iTunes wasn't working again.  I tried applying Windows Updates again.  No luck.  I rolled back to before the crash.  No luck. I tried updating to iTunes 10.6.  No luck.  I uninstalled iTunes (and all the other Apple software) and reinstalled.  It was still flakey. Disabling the firewall makes no difference.
I then blew the whole machine away, restored to factory configuration, and installed iTunes again.  It is still unreliable.
I have MacBook Pro running OS X 10.6.8 and iTunes 10.6.  It works with the Apple TV with no problems at all.  All my content plays fine. So I don't believe it is my Apple TV or the network.  (All three devices, Apple TV, MBP and Windows laptop are on a wired Ethernet network 100Mbps.)
I just installed iTunes on my Acer Netbook which is running Windows 7 Starter and it has the same unreliability issues as the laptop.
These seems to suggest it is an iTunes/Windows problem – but why am I the only one?
I should add that I can play some content on the Apple TV from either the laptop or the netbook.  It might work the first time, even the second time but eventually it just fails. For example, last night we started to watch something on the Apple TV from the library on the WinXP laptop.  It played fine for the first 4 minutes and then it just dropped out.
It doesn't matter what content I try.  Sometime music works, sometimes it doesn't.  Sometimes iTunes purchased TV shows or movies work, sometimes they don't. Sometimes home made content (FCP X) works, sometimes it doesn't.
Additionally, the laptop and netbook show up in the SHARED area of iTunes on the MBP.  I see similar results form there. I can sometimes connect to the laptop or netbook and play content but eventually it fails and the device disappears from SHARED.  It eventually comes back, though.
Interestingly, iTunes on the laptop and the netbook don't show any other SHARED devices, even though I have "Share Libraries" ticked in preferences on all three. I also don't see the Apple TV sharing icon on iTunes on the laptop or netbook but I do see it on the MBP (and my iPod and iPad).
I also have a Windows 7 64-bit laptop and I installed 64-bit iTunes 10.6 on it, but I can't even log into the iTunes store form it (unknown error 0x80092013) which appears to be a common problem of late.
I have tried everything I can think of to get it working and am hoping someone might have some ideas on how to debug the issues.

Solved - at least all good so far.
I had to add rules to my firewall software (Symantec Endpoint Protection) for Bonjour (UDP 5353) and DAAP (TCP 3689).  Once I did that, the other librares were shown in SHARING and the Apple TV reliably connects.

  • Mac OS X Server Print Sharing Issues With Server Admin

    Hello,
I have a fresh install of Mac OS X 10.6.5, with just PaperCut and network printers added. When I open Server Admin (on the server itself) and select the Print service I can see 'servermgrd' and 'cups' using 60%+ CPU each for about 3 minutes. Then when I click 'Queues' tab the 'servermgrd' and 'cups' using go back up to using 60%+ CPU each and even if I leave it running for 12 hours it continues to stay like this, until I quit Server Admin.
I currently have 45 shared printer queues.
It sounds like the same issue discussed here:

Any help would be great! Thank you.

  • How do I switch remote desktops with lion server screen sharing?

When I sometimes use the Lion Server screen sharing feature to take over my iMac using my Macbook, I find that I'm not able to switch desktops on the remote computer, i.e. using the three finger swipe.
Both are running the latest versions of Lion Server.
Now there MUST be some way to do that right?
    Who knows?

Hi John, perhaps I did not express myself clearly.
My desktop iMac is set up with multiple desktops (desktop 1 for system stuff, desktop 2 for mail, messages, skype etc, desktop 3 for Safari and desktop 4 for text proessing, VM-Ware and other work).
When I work on that machine I'm logged in as one user and use the three finger swipe left and right or the Cmd-1 thru Cmd-4 keys to switch between those desktops.
I haven't founf how to do that from my a remotely connected MacBook Pro.
Both of which are running Mountain Lion in the mean time. The iMac runs Mountain Lion Server and the MBP has ML Server installed as well, but nut implemented. Just to be able to use the remote screen...
Hope this makes my question a bit mre clear...

  • Weird issue with Windows Server 2008 R2 Print Server

I have an issue with Windows 2008 R2 (VMWare Hosted) running Windows Print Server.
Prior to a small network change, the print server was working well, hosting about 80 different networked printers from various vendors.
We made a change (that we ended up rolling back) to the Client's DHCP Scope OPT 006 (DNS Servers). The DNS servers never quite worked right and broke AD authentication to different servers, and was just a mess.
After rolling back we are not able to keep the printers online. If we ping them from the print server, the printer(s) never wake up, when a print job is submitted. If we ping them from one of the access switches, they work fine (until they fall back asleep),
to prevent this, if we start a ping on the server AFTER waking them up from the Switch Ping, they stay online and no problems.
If we stop the ping, they fall back asleep at some point, and again, won't wake up without intervention/switch side ping.
Has anyone experienced anything like this? Any tips on how I could possibly resolve it?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
According to your description, the issue seems to be that the printers can't keep online. Sounds like a power managerment issue. Why these printers fall into sleep? Have you consulted this issue with the manufacturer of these printers? Do these printers
fall into sleep if them lose the contact with printer server? Have you tried to reset the printers?
    >>We made a change (that we ended up rolling back) to the Client's DHCP Scope OPT 006 (DNS Servers).
DNS client will cache the recently queried records. If the DNS server has replied with a wrong records, communication issues will occur. To clear the DNS cache on a Windows device, please run the command below:
    ipconfig /flushdns
    Best Regards.

i have a problem, i bought lion but when i want to install he said me i need to "download osx lion server" i'm running with the last lion beta. how to update please?
ps: sorry for my english :S

You apparently are using a version of OS X you did not purchase using your Apple ID. Although you can download Mavericks you cannot install it over your current system. You must repartition your hard drive, then reinstall the version of OS X originally installed when it came new from the factory. That would be on the installer discs that should have come with the computer. If the computer did not come with discs from the factory but OS X was pre-installed (Lion or Mountain Lion) then you can perform an Internet Recovery:
Install Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
    1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
    2. After DU loads select your external hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion. Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Best Setup for Lion Server Time Machine Backup with Drobo?

I've been thinking about this a lot, yet I don't feel I have a good solution for this, so I'm going to throw it out to the community.
I have a home server setup using a Mac Mini running Lion Server 10.7.2 with a Firewire 800 Drobo attached.  The Drobo is used for both Time Machine backups and files.  I also have a Powerbook G4 running Leopard and a MacBook 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with Lion 10.7.2 which connect to the Server and the Drobo wirelessly thorugh an Airport Extreme.
I want to use Time Machine to have all of my computers back up to the server & Drobo, but realize there are several ways to go, each with their pluses and minuses:
    Server Time Machine Backup:
+ Centralizes backup process, rules, and other elements
+ Currently Mac Mini is backing up to the Drobo correctly using this process
+ Have setup size limit on Server backup so that it does not eat up file space
    - Would combine laptop backups with server backup into one sparse image: this would lead to the computer with the largest backup needs taking up too much space
    Client-Driven Time Machine Backup:
+ Allows for customization of backup processes by computer
+ Can setup specific space requirements for each computer
+ Backups are separate from each other
    - Wireless backup from laptops to Drobo is not functioning currently
Any thoughts or experiences on how best to set this up?  I tend to do most of my work on the MacBook, hence I am concerned about it having it's backup space eaten up by the server, but that may be more of a theoretical issue than a real one.
Thanks in advance for your help!

Well I'm not sure if I am following you but I will explain how I set mine up. When I got the Drobo I inserted 2 drives and selected the highest available volume I could (16TB). My drives are 4 TB each and I knew I would soon add 2 more. Then Drobo did its thing and prepared these drives. The Drobo shows up on my mini desktop as an external drive. When I log into my server from my other computer I can see the mini server volume and the Drobo volume. I can access each no problem. They act as regular volumes. Soon after I added the second two drives and everything stayed the same meaning I could still see and access the Drobo on the desktop of my mini. So it sounds like you used the Drobo dashboard to partition yours for two volumes? Are they both showing on the desktop?
"Maybe the Drobo needs to be mounted on the desktop to be considered AFP feature enabled." I could be wrong and hopefully someone will correct me but I think the Drobo (or volumes) have to be mounted on the desktop to work with AFP.

  • How to configure Mountain Lion Server to run Web2py with wsgi?

I am trying to config Mountain Lion Server to run Web2py with mod_wsgi. I get an error saying: "Premature end o scritp Header" wsgihandler.py (which is the wsgi file for Web2py).
I had it working fine in Snow Leopard and Lion Servers but not in Mountain Lion Server.
    Thanks for your help.
    Flavio.

I don't run web2py framework so can't tell you specifically.
That error means your script is not writing an http header to the browser so the browser can't decode whatever string it is getting. Your script is running as a plain old Python script. This is most likely because the Server.app in 10.8 now includes mod_wsgi built-in and configured from the GUI.
You can insert an intercept anywhere in your code to check any variable by saying this:
    ##########   PROGRAMMING HERE  ###############
    print("Content-type:text/plain\n\n")
    print(someVariable)
    # raise SystemExit
The above sends an "http header" so the browser knows what to do. These headers are invisible in the browser window. But depending on your Python version, the pring statement may not work (I am running Python3). The SystemExit statement is optional, just in case your script crashes downstream.
WSGI sends a header like this:
    startResponse("200 OK", [("Content-Type", "text/plain")])
but it sounds like mod_wsgi is not even being invoked. Normally your WSGI script is named *.wsgi and your Apache is set up to run the Python script as CGI under the mod_wsgi handler using this directive:
    AddHandler wsgi-script .wsgi
The file having the config is located at
    /Library/Server/Web/Config/apache2/httpd_wsgi.webapp.conf
where webapp is the name of your webapp. I would suggest copying the file called httpd_wsgi.conf and renaming it to your webapp name. When Server.app is configured properly, you enable wsgi webapps in the GUI Advanced wndow for your domain.

  • Major Issues with Windows XP and Sound Blaster Audig

As mentioned in the post title, I'm using a Sound Blaster Audigy 4 card (recently purchased) and am having issues with Windows XP apparently because of it. When the card is physically installed, but the drivers are not, there are no problems. However, when the drivers are installed, Windows XP's "explorer.exe" crashes on boot, locking up the start menu and any other open windows. Now, I can manually end the explorer.exe application and then reboot it, and things will work... however, I cannot imagine that that is the intended functionality of this card. Additionally, I suspect the card in the failure of a game (Eve Online) but I would assume the issues are related. I've already narrowed the issue down to the Sound Blaster drivers. I've tried booting with the SB drivers but without the video card drivers, and the problem recurred. Every time I boot with the SB drivers installed, it fails. Without them, things seem to run normally. If it helps, I'm using an Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 processor, with GB of DDR800 RAM. I've installed Windows Service Pack 2 and all the other updates. The video card is a Geforce 7950 GT, with the latest NVidia Forceware (93.7) drivers. I've had this problem with both the Audigy drivers on the CD that came with the card and the newest ones downloaded from this website. My motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3, which includes onboard sound hardware, but I have disabled it at the BIOS level. I can provide dxdiag information or anything like that if necessary. Does anyone have any advice, suggestions, or have you encountered a similar problem?Message Edited by DerekKatz on 2-04-200603:2 AM

Thanks for the helpful reply Dan
I ran the file, CTZAPXX.exe, like suggested, and it ran without a problem. It installed the files and even required me to reboot my computer!!
However, after a computer restart, I am still in the same boat. Codecs are installed, but the location of the device is "unknown". In Device manager, there are no unknown devices; it shows the codecs in the sound tab, but no actual hardware; as if my sound card does not exist.
I use my computer for music, and my buddy needs me tomorrow night to play some music stored on my computer. I really do appreciate the help I am offered. I do not mean to sound impatient, but I really need this device fixed, or I will have to have him buy me a sound card....

  • Itunes issues with Windows having to do with Apple's patent

I had a thought and am not sure if it's right. I was wondering if myissues with Apple Itunes store on Windows 7 has anything to do with the Patent laws and all with Apple and samsung and all that.

I had the same issues with Windows 8 Consumer Preview. I installed on a fresh system and still had issues.
I experienced extreme lag, with pretty much everything, and iTunes freezing once I attempted to change the currently playing song.
I had a mess with compatibility mode and found out that running it in with Compatibility mode enabled for Windows XP (Service Pack 3) and as an administrator fixed it. It works now, however, there is a popup message that comes up on launch telling you to change the compatibility settings, but pressing "OK" makes it go away.
    How?
Open Windows Explorer, and navigate to: "C:\Program Files\iTunes" (For 32bit) or "C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes" (For 64bit), unless you changed it.
Right-click on "iTunes.exe", select "Properties" from the context menu, and click the "Compatibility" tab.
Under "Compatibility mode" check off "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" and select "Windows XP (Service Pack 3)" from the drop down menu.
Further down under "Privilege level" check off "Run this program as an administrator".
    Click "Apply" and "OK".
Should fix any issues, I have my default iTunes Media Folder Location within an external hard drive so unplugging all of my USB's wasn't an option.
