Live BIOS Update method with a 645 Ultra-C board
I have a 645 Ultra-C motherboard which has been running fine since installation some years ago.
The bios has never been updated but I may now need to (see my other request for help here in respect of fitting a pci ata controller card) my questions about Live BIOS are :-
Is Live BIOS the best way to update the bios on this board ?
Is there any way of preserving the existing BIOS in case things go wrong ?
Any help, advice, guidance would be much appreciated.

I just installed 2 x1 gb.ram from 2x512 sticks and lost my 1T timing to 2T with selection now grayed out ( cannot select). I rhought I may need to update bios to 1.DO. Using live update to see what version is available and this is what I get.
1.50 Online Ver. 1.D0 Size 726KB
Notes 1. This is Award BIOS .
2. This BIOS fixes the following problem of the previous version:

Your BIOS is the same or newer than what we provided. You do not have to update it.
Is live update nuts or what? I have bios ver 1.5 and I know 1.DO is newer so what gives.
motherboard site now says latest ver 1D dated 2006/05/24 also says my ver 1.5 is dated 2005/06/03Finally got the 1T back. Not realy sure just how but after changing bios 5 times from 1.5 to -1D -1C - 1B - back to 1.5 finally to 1.6. I don't realy think the bios was the problem. I discovered that when I would clear c -mos with the button then before or after loading optimized defaults that it wasn't realy clearing everything completely. Like in particular the date, time (even though I would set it correctly) which then after loading windows avg, start menu and a few other thing were all screwed up. After running awhile the date would be wrong again. I eventually realized it and removed the battery for a few minutes then loaded optimized defaults then I could set date/time correctly (then when in windows the date and time would stay correct). and also was able to get 1T back. Now I am not saying that this was definitely the problem. I realize that I could have just missed setting something in the bios. (I know I am an idiot anyway.) I probably will never be sure. But I have learned 1 thing for sure and that is never to worry about changing bios again as long as I use the usb flash tool method. It's the perfect solution to bios flash with no more sweat. .Looks like the whole fiasco started when I cleared c mos the first time with that damned button rather than removing the battery.
Now I have but 1 problem left and that is cold boot issue even though no oc and I never had it before and it only started at the same time as the 1T loss which was when I changed the ram. I now have to hit the reset button at the windows splash screen to make it finish loading and get into windows. I am searching the forum for possibilities but nothing seems to match though I am still looking. Thanks for all the help. -
I restetted the CMOS, took out all disks and do a fresh boot. Is that the right prcedure?
Where is that bios protection I need to turn off according to the setup?
How many have already used this program successfull on the K8N Neo P?basically use live update to find the right bios for your motherboard if you do not over clock or do not have problems with your board then i suggest u leave it alone ... only flash your "bios" if
1. you have a board problem or a known upgrade possible
2. you no what your doing
if u do go ahead with flashin use the live update and follow instructions carefully -
P35 platinum combo will not boot windows after bios update via Live Update
Hi,
I had everything running on windows 7 fine until 2 days ago. I installed Live Update from MSI website. I was about to install driver updates for my motherboard, but the bios update went instead. my pc tried to restart after the bios update installed, but it failed. would not post and would only see black screen.
then i removed one of my memory sticks. it would post, but then windows would not start up. it would get stuck at windows loading screen. i tried to reformat with my windows cd. but during install it would blue screen of death me. i tried multiple times and it would always blue screen of death with different errors. the last one i remember was a message saying i should off turn shadowing and caching.
this all started happening after i attempted bios update via Live Update.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

[Athlon64] Failed Bios update with both Live Update and Dos version = badchecksum shutdownSometimes bios recovery is a long shot .
But the award bios v.6 is supposed to be able to do it if the bootblock is still intact.
Best way seems to be to strip it down to minimal configuration , disconnect all drives except floppy , one ram module , perhaps without video card also .

How does live update 6 work with BIOS updates?
I want to upgrade to the x99 platform but I am concerned with how new it is. I want to make sure I keep the BIOS updated because of the "newness" of it all and compatibility issues. Although I have built and continue to upgrade my system I am in no way proficient in trouble shooting or making changes. So flashing the BIOS always makes me nervous that I will screw something up. So when I heard that MSI has a program called live update 6 that automatically updates the BIOS it got my interested.
Can anyone give me some advice on how this program works? Or are the compatibility issues more an issue of the past when Intel rushed the CPUs out and the MOBO makers had to play catch up?
Thanks for everyone's advice and help.Hi
Which exactly motherboard you're looking for? If you're afraid of bricking BIOS, then I suggest something like X99 MPower/XPower which has dual BIOS.
LiveUpdate: downloads the update pack, does some magic within bootup and updates the BIOS. I don't know the exact process it does, but works just like installing a software: download, extract, install. Also MSI offers MFlash which lets YOU go through flashing process: download, prepare USB stick, boot from USB (or use MFlash within BIOS settings) and update.
Risks: flashing BIOS is always a risk, no matter if it's MSI, Gigabyte or anyone else's brand. It's a chip, that if something goes wrong (for example system is not stable), then motherboard may get bricked and recovery may/may not be possible.

Equium A210 - after BIOS update problems signing into MSN Live Messenger
Hi
I have just installed the latest Bios update for my Equium A210, as this was the first time \i have ever attempted this \i watched carefully and all appeared to go correctly but, when the notebook restarted, it beeped and showed a checksum error, I chose the option to restart with 'Default Settings'
Since doing this I have had problems signing into MSN Live Messenger and wondered if this could be something to do with the Bios update, also is it possible to 'go back' to the old Bios somehow?
Thanks
WiddyHi there,
your issue is actually not an machine related problem. The "Checksum Error" is normal after every BIOS update since the checksum of the BIOS which consists the the BIOS settings and the BIOS version is not correct due an altered BIOS version.
So, next time you update your BIOS you will get a "BIOS checksum error" again. Dont worry, its nothing serious.
Regarding your Messenger:
1. Uninstall the messenger
2. Download the latest version from the MSN site
3. Install the new one
4. Have fun

Disabling the live/multi update in the z77a-gd65 bios
I see a lot of stuff saying to use the board's bios app to update the bios. BUT I see nothing about disabling the bios update in the bios utility of the mb's bios.
How to disable the auto-"update". It happened again today where turning the power on, the screen goes blank, reboots showing multi-bios updating & not to turn the power off. The problem this is the 2nd time & the bios "update" is from my 10.5 to 10.3B4; so is there a difference & is 10.3B4 really the "latest" bios version....From the reading I've seen so far, is that one needed to have the bios on a fat/fat32 drive which I don't have as a hard drive; I do have fat32 flash drives which weren't even plugged in when the bios got changed!
What happened? The bios update wasn't within windows as the boot process never got that far.1: your computer could have downloaded last time it was on a BIOS update via live update if installed and flashe 1 chip but not the other and the board was trying to flash the 2nd with the same bios on the other chip!
2: could be you have had a corupted BIOS chip and the board was trying to flash the bios from the other chip to the defective one!
is your computer working fine now?
do you have live update on your computer? (if its working remove live update as its got a 50/50 chance of corrupting your bios if it messes it up)

MSI z77a GD80 PCI-e running at 8x and Bios update problem
Hi guys, first of all, sorry for my bad English, this is also my first topic, i recently bought a new PC, the spec is:
i7 3770k @4,3ghz
Corsair H80
MSI z77a GD80 bios 1.2
GTX 680 lightning
8gb ddr3 1600mhz cas9 G.Skill
1TB HDD WD Caviar Black
Asus xonar DX
The problem is, since the first bios, i can't run my PCI-E at 16x, i know when my card is idle the PCI-E goes to 1.1@4x , but when it's in use, it turns to PCI-E 3.0@8x , I'm also waiting for bios updates to check if it solves my problem, but when i try to download the new version 1.3, the download fails ( I'm trying to download with Live update 5 )m is there somebody that can help me solve this problem pls?
I've tried until now:
Replace the card into the first PCI-E slot again
Clear the PCI-E slot
Update to bios 1.1 and 1.2 ( 1.3 is not even downloading )
Set PCI Gen 3 from Auto to disable, and it keeps running with PCI-E 3.0@8x
Thx for any help !Quote from: Froggy Gremlin on 18-November-12, 16:22:21
As per the manual, the VGA must be in the primary slot to run 16X. BIOS setting for graphics 3.0 should be set to Auto.
Do not use Live Update for BIOS updates. Too many borked boards are the result. Use the forum's USB method;

Just curious. If I installed Add-on card that run at PCI-E 4X on 3rd slot (2nd slot is empty) what's configuration will apply ? -
Windows Vista 64 bit and bios update how? K9A2
OK Is there anyway to really update my bios so I can use my Phenom II if I'm running Vista 64? Ive read the live update info and I'm not sure that works with the 64 bit vista. The i read about the flash drive bios update and I'm not sure that's 64 bit compatible. As a side note why don't they have liveupdate 64bit compatible yet? Its been out for some time and windows 7 will be 64 bit only I would think.

The flash drive bios update is not depending on the operating system.

Sadly MSI hasn't yet supplied us with a 64-bit version of LiveUpdate.
Personally I've been using AMI's Windows Flash Utility AFUWIN.exe several times. Works flawlessly even when running Vista x64. -
[SOLVED] MSI Z97 Gaming 9 AC - Bios Update Fail
Hi,
today i decided to do a bios update of my board.
A friend of me told me NOT to use the Windows-Flash tool cause he killed two borads with it.
Ok so i used the flash utility from the bios/uefi menu with a usb-stick (M-Flash).
Everything looked ok - flash tool was running and told me success/complete and it will now reboot/reset.
At this time i wasn't able to boot anymore
It was like the board tried to read the flash but failed, reset, failed ...
Lucky for me there is this little switch for the bios chip.
Everything worked with the backup chip and i tried to reflash the broken master chip.
-> Using the MSI E-Setup with Mode "In DOS Mode. (USB)".
Booting up the usb stick and switched to master bios chip when i was seeing the "alert - only continue when you know what you are doing bla bla"-message.
Wasn't able to flash anything cause of error:
Quote
ROMID is not compatible with existing BIOS ROMID
Asking google i should use the /X option (/X - Don't Check ROM ID).
Now i got a new error
Quote
Rom image layout detected RomHole is redesigned
With this message i should use the /K option (/K - Program all non-critical blocks) i was told ... now a was able to flash the chip
And the result was: fail
I found the "HQ USB flashing tool" here and tried to flash the broken chip again (switching the bios switch from backup to master after booting), but also no luck for me ...
After a break i had an idea - at which time i can switch from the backup chip to the master chip?
The bootcode "A2" was the right for me
At the bios/uefi setup all my fans were running at full speed and i was sure this is because of the broken master chip.
So again i tried the M-Flash tool from the setup - f**k it will reset/reboot before the flash progress will start - but now i know the time to switch from backup to master chip
The tool started and i saw the same messages (everything ok, reset/reboot) as i tried it the first time.
Reboot - SUCCESS!
I wasted about three hours of my live to brick and unbrick the master chip, but i don't know why this happend
Maybe this post will help someone to fix a failed bios update.
YourNameThanks for sharing
I used M-Flash a couple of times, just remember DON'T remove usb-stick until it reboot successfully to os.... -
BIOS update killed my MS-6728 Neo-2-S mainboard, please help..
1. I successfully booted my system and installed dual boot to Win2k Server and WinXP Pro.
2. In XP Pro, I installed basic drivers and updated the rest through Live Update 3.
3. After installing MSI software I began experiencing lockups whenever I would try to restart (start, shutdown, restart) in XP Pro.
4. I decide to update the BIOS. Original version was AMI 1.1.
5. I update through live update 3 and it creates backup file AMIBIOS.ROM on a floppy diskette, no sweat I should be able to restore right?
6. I download the 1.5x Beta BIOS and the newer update utility ADSFI708.EXE and place them on same floppy diskette as AMIBIOS.ROM (the backup BIOS).
7. I restart computer and boot from Win98 SE boot disk.
8. I insert the floppy with the 1.5x BIOS update and I execute the BIOS update. The update proceeds without incident. I wait an extra 30 seconds after its finished before restarting.
9. I restart and the system BIOS screen comes up and claims there's a misconfiguration in BIOS. I hit F1 to go into setup and it has reset all the options I normally set (boot order, wether numlock is ON or OFF, etc). I set these very simple options and ONLY these options the way I like them. I have NOT tweaked voltage, timings, or anything of the nature. All settings except for simple ones like numlock on/off are set to autodetect or base settings.
10. I exit out of BIOS and get a black screen.
11. I restart the computer and get a black screen again. The fans on the mobo and the colored LEDs are on, but the system isn't booting.
12. I figure no problem I've read about this and I have the AMIBIOS.ROM backup floppy handy with the 1.1 BIOS that Live Update 3 backed up for me.
13. I shut off the computer and remove the memory. I short the CMOS clearing jumper. I turn on the computer. BIOS/CMOS should be cleared now yes?
14. I put just 1 stick of GEIL 512mb PC3700 RAM back in and insert the recovery disk.
15. I start computer and spam CTRL+HOME keys. Floppy drive starts to read. After a while it beeps 4 times.
16 I remove BIOS recovery disk, put both sticks of RAM in, and restart computer.
17. Black screen still.
18. I repeat steps 13-17 several (8+) times. I go so far as to a) Remove video card b) try different slots for RAM and c) remove the CMOS battery, all in an effort to clear whatever the problem is.
It's still not working. The PS powers up. The fans spin. The dancing colored LEDs on the mainboard fan go off. But no BIOS screen. No POST. No beeps.
Can anyone point out anything I missed or is my board dead and I need to RMA it?
System specifications:
Mainboard: MSI NEO-2-S (MSI 6728)
VGA: MSI Geforce 4 TI-4200 64mb
RAM: GeiL 2x512 PC-3700 matched pair
Power Supply: 300 W
CPU: P4-2.4C
No overclocking/overtiming/overvolting - stock settings
Thanks in advance.
ChrisOk, maybe someone can answer this question on clearing the CMOS.
The wording in the manual was ambiguous. It sounded to me like they didn't want you to move the jumper from open to short or vice versa while the system was powered up. One should never unplug stuff while the system is powered up..
On the other hand, they may have meant to NEVER power the system up with the jumper shorted. Which was what I did.
Is it safe to use this procedure?
1. Power down system.
2. Remove Ram, Video card, CMOS battery
3. Short jumper
4. Turn system on, wait 30 sec
5. Shut system off, unshort jumper and put ram, vga, and cmos battery back in.
Or is this what they meant:
1. Power down system.
2. Remove Ram, Video, CMOS battery.
3. Short jumper, wait x seconds
4. Unshort jumper, put back in Ram, Video, battery
5. Turn system on
I used the first procedure.
I'm worried the mobo may be fried now. -
Yoga 2 Pro Went DEAD After BIOS Update
Had a horrible experience .. with good ending ... when upgrading Bios for my Yoga 2 Pro. So I'd like to share with others. I bought my Yoga 2 Pro last June (Man 3/22/14) and love it! But, it had problem restarting automatically after Windows Update. At least 3 times (That I can recall. Did not use it briefly from June 30 - July 22), the screen reminding user not to shutdown after Windows the update would stay on until I manually powered it down and restarted it. Last July 23, it did again after Windows Update. Searched Lenovo web-site and found a Bios Update for Yoga 2 Pro (Win 8.1 64-bit). Downloaded the new Bios (dated July 11, 2014) and went through the instruction striclty. First of, the screen responses were not at all as detailed in the instruction. So, the instruction is not very good. Received 2 warnings: Make sure the laptop is connected to the charger during the procedure, and the bios is for Yoga 2 Pro ONLY do not install it on any other models. As part fo the procedure, the laptop switched to a Bios Utility program. Again received the aforementioned warnings. Update progress was shown on the screen. All of a sudden, then screen went blank and the keyboard stayed lit. Waited for about 30 minutes. Still the same. Press and held the power button down (not sure for how long) ... nothing! Just no response from the latop. Called Tech support. She (the tech support lady) said that ... it is not recommended for user to go through the BIOS upgrade! What? Then why post it on Lenovo.com? She also said that I should not have downloaded software from the internet and upgrade, especially for BIOS. Well, I told her that I did not download the program from ANY web-site, I downloaded it from LENOVO.com. She said further that looks like the BIOS update had damaged my mother-board, there is a problem with Win 8 & 8.1, and because it was my own doing ... the damage would not be covered by the warranty! Considering the circumstance, Lenovo would waiver the initial $99 fee to assess the damage, but I would have to pay for any repair costs. In any case, I was so fumed at Lenove Tech Support responses that I hung up. close my laptop and put it aside. Almost 24 hours later, when the battery drained completely, I connected the laptop to the charger, press the power button to turn it on ... and ... to my surprise, the laptop booted and everything came back normal! The last (7/25) auto restart seemed to go well. Not sure if the auto restart problem is fixed with the new BIOS, but it seems to be. Time will tell.
Thank you for your posting. I searched the net when I ran into the problem, but could not find any help. Obviously, my search was not exhaustive. I was trying to make the following: a. Lenov should be more specific in their BIOS update instruction. Their instruction was ... far ... far from reality. b. Lenovo tech assistance was ... not much help. After listening to the description of my prolem, the tech lady immediately said that the operation must have damaged the mother-board, and that the operation is not ... recommended. No guidance on draining the battery a or how to restart the machine, etc... What I received was confusing that caused more panic! As a note, I had done BIOS upgrade on DELL PC/laptop before w/o any problem. I fully understand the implication of a BIOS upgrade, but trusted that manufacturer fully tested whatever that they post in their web-site. Oh well, live ... and learn! All in all, the Yoga 2 Pro is a great machine and I love it! Hope that anyone who runs into the same problem will be able to get the needed help in time! Cheers,

I have a PC, running XP Pro SP3, which was built for me nigh on 9 years ago.
Motherboard: MSI-6712 (KT4V-L) Version 1.0 (North Bridge KT400A Rev 80, South Bridge VT8235 Rev 00)
CPU: AMD XP2800+ CPU (Socket A 462, 3000 MHz)
Memory: 1.0GB DDR
GPU: nVidia GeForce FX-5200 (128 MB)
About 4 years back I considered updating the BIOS, but the MS LiveUpdate utility (v 3.5 I think it was) no longer worked (wrong URL). Tried updating it, but the update (can’t remember the version) shut down my system whenever I tried to use it. So I rolled back and left it.
Recently, a program I was evaluating (running on .Net 4 Client Profile) caused my PC to freeze up and after uninstalling I discovered all manner of problems with USB peripherals (recognition and auto-play issues).
Tried to restore a backup (Retrospect Express HD) from a Maxtor One Touch III external drive but it wasn’t having it, presumably because of the drive recognition issues, and a straight System Restore wouldn’t complete (because XP would freeze at log off).
I feared there had been hardware damage, but decided to try a clean re-install of XP Pro. The person who built the PC had left a folder of system set up files (VIA chipset 4in1, LAN, RealTek AC97, nVidia drivers, utilities etc) on the hard drive (which I backed up) but when it came to installing XP, I couldn’t figure out which chipset drivers to install, as there were multiple versions (presumably for his purposes). So I let XP install the default windows drivers and then replaced them with the latest VIA 4in1 set for the KT4V-L from the MSI download page (can’t post link) – driver version 5.11a, release 20.4.2007
Seemed to go well, but it was suggested to me that it might be a good time to update the BIOS. So I installed MSI Live Update 5 and ran a scan. Strange thing is that an automatic scan (which pulls up just the nVidia driver and utilities) reports that none are installed and a manual scan reports that the BIOS, Drivers and Utilities are the latest version and no there is need to update. How can that be? I’ve never updated the BIOS and the only other utility I re-installed is PC Alert 5.
Yet when I run a SIW (System Information for Windows) scan and it reports the following:

How is it that Live Update 5 doesn’t pick this up?
So, apologies for the convoluted post (thought it best to explain the events leading to this), but what to do?
1. Do I need to update the BIOS, given that it has never been done and I now have the latest VIA 4in1 drivers installed?
2. Why is Live Update 5 not reporting the status correctly and is there anything I can do to correct this.
3. Otherwise, if a BIOS update, is warranted, should I go ahead and download directly from the Global MSI webpage and then which version? (can’t post link). I note from the version descriptions that it was v1.7 (26/12/2002) that added support for AMD XP 2800. Strange then that the guy who put together my PC, would not have updated the BIOS from v1.0 to 1.7 at that time!!
4. Should I also update the nVidia driver, and if so, when? Before or after a BIOS update or is that irrelevant?

According to the poster (Post #30), the KT4V-L can support 3gB DDR400.
I looked at the MB in my PC and it is in fact stamped MS-6712 KT4AV v10A (assumed 1.0A ). Both CPU-Z and SIW report it as a MS-6712 v1.0 (BIOS 07.00T 04/02/01, Firmware 101.114)
According to the MSI product webpage, the only difference between the KT4AV and KT4AV_L is that the latter includes an (optional) on-board 10/100 LAN.
http://www.msi.com/product/mb/KT4AV.html#/?div=Detail
The ethernet port on my PC is (as described in Device Manager) is a Via Rhine II Fast Ethernet Adapter, whereas in the listed MSI specifications, the optional 10/100 LAN is stated to be a VIA VT6103 LAN controller. So possibly then I was mistaken in assuming that my MB is a KT4AV-L.
Even so, if the statement about the KT4AV-L supporting 3gB DDR400 is true, surely this also applies to the KT4AV ?
Looking at the available BIOS updates on the MSI page, I can see no mention of an upgrade in DDR400 capacity:
http://www.msi.com/product/mb/KT4AV.html#/?div=BIOS
Edit: Ah, the guy in the post specifically refers to a KT4V-L v1.1 not KT4AV-L and I see that it is different product:
http://www.msi.com/product/mb/KT4V---KT4V-L--v1-0-.html#/?div=Detail
What's confusing is that they all designated as MS-6712. So if anyone, like me, does a look up under MS-6712 they could pull up either version, and since the KT4AV/L and KT4V/L have different BIOS update series, I can see how someone could easily flash the wrong BIOS.
That aside, the memory specifications for the KT4V/L are essentially the same as those in the User Guide that came with my KT4AV:
Supports up to 3GB PC1600/2100/2700/3200* DDR SDRAMs
*See Glossary for recommended DDR400 modules - with the largest listed module capacity being 2 x 512MB
So where does this "up to 3GB DDR400 capacity" notion come from. I'd really want to believe it. And if the guy in the PC shop is to be believed, I'd settle for just 2GB.
Edit 2: Oh, boy, so there is a separate product listing for the KT4V-L v1.1:
http://us.msi.com/product/mb/KT4V-L--v1-1-.html#/?div=Detail
Yet, the memory specifications appear to be the same as those for the other MS-6712 versions and BIOS updates are the same as those for the KT4AV-L (very confusing). In fact the downloadable User Guide is the same - 'KT4AV MS-6712 (v1.X) ATX Motherboard'.
Am I missing something here?
