Load Balance AJP13 on CSS 11501
We are trying to load balance AJP13 protocol using port 8009 between Apache servers and JBOSS application servers.
We are getting Page cannot be found in the browser.
Content rule used:
content webdev_ajp13_8009
add service dil01
add service dil02
vip address 192.168.x.x
balance aca
no persistent
protocol tcp
port 8009
url "/*"
active
Has anyone come across the problem before and what was the solution.
Thanks in advance.
Anthony
Hi Zach,
Just to let you know that we have run extensive tests and found that if the URL uses the workers file to reference the AJP13 protocol, traffic goes from the Apache servers to the Content Switch VIP but does not forward the traffic onto the servers. TCP packets are detected on the sniffer but once the AJP13 protocol is detected then an error occurs, ERROR AJP13 unassembled packet. If we however use the URL with the parameter :8009 then the traffic passes from the content switch VIP to the JBOSS servers.
We have decided to use AJP13 Mod_jk so only HTTP and HTTPS traffic will be passed between all the servers.
Thanks for your assistance in this matter.
Regards
Anthony

CSS 11501 Load Balancing Issue

Observation : We are able to telnet on VIP: 132.186.199.146 on port 5001, but not able to access the application.
In Actual scenarion customer access application by accessing URL: http://132.186.199.243:5001/emi and once he enter this URL in web browser the request redirects ( by server itself) to URL: https://132.186.199.44:6002/cas/login?service=http%3A%2F%2F132.186.199.243%3A5001%2Femi%2Findex.jsp&acceptStrength=BASIC on backend server for user authenticaton and once user is authenticated then it again redirect to main URL ( http://132.186.199.243:5001/emi ) to access the application but when we are trying to access the application through VIP ( URL: http://132.186.199.146:5001/emi) we are not getting the login page as the request is not gettting redirected to backend server for user authentication.
Please suggest a solution here. The problem is that you are in one-armed mode.
So you need to configure client nat.
Without nating the client ip address, the server response goes back directly to the client and bypasses the CSS.
Therefore the client receives a response from an unknown server ip address (not the vip).
So configure a group.
For example
group Client
vip address 132.186.199.146
add destination service Server1
add destination service Server2
active
Also, remove the url command from your content rule.
It is useless in your case and will just make performance worst.

CSS Load balancing for Exchange Server
Hi,
I have CSS configured in single arm and I have multiple servers configured for load balancing and it is working fine but when I am configuring Exchange server for load balancing I am facing problem and applications and printer/scanners are not able to send the email through the Virtual IP address configured for exchaneg server.
But if we configured the real server IP in the printer/scanners they are able to send the email. While checking the logs on the exchange server, it is showing that request for the email so coming from the Exchange VIP configured in the CSS.
I can telnet on port 25 on the VIP address (192.168.200.237). But unable to send the email through this VIP.
Below is the configuration

Add service command in the group but didnt work for me. If i will remove the group command then I cant telnet on port 25.
I think this is related to single arm modle or some wrong configuration for the NAT.

CSS - Load balancing to Microsoft 2008 Sharepoint Application
We are tring to load balance using the CSS 11503 to two Servers running Microsoft Sharepoint 2008. Everything is working fine as far as load balancing is cocerned. But what we want is if the Microsoft Sharepoint 2008 Application is down one one server then we do not want any request for this application to be sent to this server. What sort of keepalive should we be using, because TCP port 80 is still up and responds when the Microsoft Sharepoint 2008 Application is down on this server.
I do not know much about how Microsoft Sharepoint 2008 Application interfaces / interacts with IIS and port 80, etc.
Any suggestions?Partial Config:

But even when it says DOWN we can still connect to port 80 without problem.

I hope that someone can help with 2 simple (i think) CSS questions.
1. When configured properly for load balancing, should the CSS round-robin between servers or will it continue to use only one server until triggered by some event or parameter?
2. If 1 of 2 load balanced servers fails, how does load balancing proceed? Will it continue to try to load balance between the servers or will it give up on the failed server unitil some event or timeout occurs?
Thanks in advance,
EliotHi Eliot,
The CSS can be configured to perform load balancing in a variety of different ways. Least connections, round robin, ACA etc. Each new connection through the CSS will be round robined over each of the servers in your server group.
If a server fails then the CSS will know it has failed through the use of keepalives (based on TCP connection, ICMP etc) and no longer send requests through to that server. Traffic associated with a previous connection to the failed server will be sent to on of the surviving servers. It is then up to the behavior of the application as to if the user experiences any disruption.
Hope this helps

Hi,
I have CSS in single arm deployment model. I have multiple servers load balancing on this CSS on port 80 etc. Today I am trying to load balance one Oracle server but I am facing problem with it.
Real servers are accessible on port 80 without any problem but when we are trying to access the same servers on VIP we are not able to see the web page.

Below is the configuration. I can do the telnet on port 80 and I can ping the VIP IP address.
I will only put 192.168.200.58 in browser I can see the oracle page but with the full URL i am not able to see it.
Though I have other oracle servers which I have load balance with the same configuration and I can access the web page.

Cisco CSS 11503 Arrowpoint/Load Balance question
I am troubleshooting an issue with my 11503. I am running version 07.40.0.04. I have it configured as follows:
content upcadtoa-rule
add service cadtoa-wls1-e0

add service cadtoa-wls2-e1
add service cadtoa-wls3-e0

arrowpoint-cookie expiration 00:00:15:00
protocol tcp
port 8001
advanced-balance arrowpoint-cookie
redundant-index 2
vip address 172.30.194.195 range 2
arrowpoint-cookie name TOA
active
However, the load-balancing across the servers does not seem to be doing much balancing. One of those servers is getting hit with 5 times as much traffic as another and another server is lucky to get a connection at all. With the cookie expiration set, one would think that this would all balance out over time.
I just came across this information from Cisco and I am wondering if it is relevant:
If you configure a balance or advanced-balance method on a content rule that requires the TCP protocol for Layer 5 (L5) spoofing, you should configure a default URL string, such as url "/*". The addition of the URL string forces the content rule to become an L5 rule and ensures L5 load balancing or stickiness. If you do not configure a default URL string, unexpected results can occur.
In the following configuration example, if you configure a Layer 3 (L3) content rule with an L5 balance method, the CSS performs L5 load balancing, but will reject UDP packets.
content testing
vip address 192.168.128.131
add service s1
balance url
active
The balance url method is an L5 load-balancing method in which the CSS must spoof the connection and examine the HTTP GET content request to perform load balancing. The CSS rejects the UDP packet sent to this rule because a UDP connection cannot be L5. Though the CSS allows this rule configuration, its expected behavior would be more clear if you promote the rule to L5 by configuring the url "/*" command.
In the next example, if you configure an L3 content rule with an L5 advanced-balance method, L5 stickiness will not work as expected.
content testing
vip address 192.168.128.131
add service s1
advanced-balance arrowpoint-cookie
active
The advanced-balance arrowpoint-cookie method causes the CSS to spoof the connection, however, the CSS still marks it as an L3 rule. Thus, the CSS does not insert the generated cookie and the rule defaults to L3 stickiness (sticky-srcip). You must configure a URL like url "/*" to promote this rule to L5, ensuring that L5 stickiness works as expected.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give. The thing is not down, it is just balancing strangely causing application performance issues.
JamesHey James,
You will need to suspend the content rule in order to add the url statement. This will cause a quick downtime until the content rule is activated again. I have shown below the commands to add the statement. Perhaps you can create your commands in a Notepad file, then paste them all in so they execute quickly to minimize your downtime:
content MY-SITE
vip address 10.201.130.140
port 80
protocol tcp
add service MY-SERVER

CSS11503# config t
CSS11503(config)# owner TEST
CSS11503(config-owner[TEST])# content MY-SITE
CSS11503(config-owner-content[TEST-MY-SITE])# url "/*"
%% Attribute may not be modified on active rule
CSS11503(config-owner-content[TEST-MY-SITE])# suspend
CSS11503(config-owner-content[TEST-MY-SITE])# url "/*"
CSS11503(config-owner-content[TEST-MY-SITE])# active
CSS11503(config-owner-content[TEST-MY-SITE])# exit
CSS11503(config-owner[TEST])# exit
CSS11503(config)# exit
CSS11503# show run
content MY-SITE
vip address 10.201.130.140
add service MY-SERVER
port 80
protocol tcp
url "/*" <--------

Hope this helps,

CSS Load balancing on same subnet/vlan
Hi
I have connections coming in to a VIP which is load balanced with a CSS between web servers. However I need the web servers to talk to a VIP on the same subnet and then load balance that to servers in the same subnet as my web servers. We are using the CSS's in bridging mode. Is this possible?Yes, it is possible. You can define one VIP to load balance traffic on your web servers and another VIP (on the same subnet) to allow load balancing between web servers and back-end servers. If the web servers use a different TCP port to communicate with the back-end servers as for the web access, you can even use the same VIP address and two content rules.
Something is however very important to make this working : you have to NAT the source address for the backend servers connections to make sure the return traffic pass through the CSS and not directly to the web server (they are on the same subnet).

Sticky load balancing across 2 ports with cookies
Hi,
I have a server configuration where I have 1 top level Apache server that deals with SSL termination (and handles static content) and proxy passes dynamic content onto 2 Tomcat servers on 2 ports, one for http requests (9001) and one for the requests that were secure, but have now been un-encrypted by Apache (9002). My 2 Tomcat servers are load balanced using a CSS and I need this load balancing to stick to the tomcat servers regardless of port so that the user is stuck to the same Tomcat server for their entire session.
I would like to use arrowpoint cookies to perform this stickyness, but the documentation suggests that arrowpoint cookie load balancing (in fact any cookie based load balancing) requires the port to be specified in the content rule. Is this correct? Is my only option to use the source IP for stickyness? I don't understand why the port should be required if the stickyness is via a cookie. Can I not simply configure my 2 tomcat servers as services with no port and add a single content rule that load balances these services using arrowpoint-cookie advanced balancing?
service tomcat1
ip address x.x.x.x
active
service tomcat2
ip address x.x.x.x
active
owner me
content sticky
vip address x.x.x.x
protocol tcp
url "/*"
add service tomcat-1
add service tomcat-2
advanced-balance arrowpoint-cookie
activeAngela-
The issue with port is that cookies are very specifically HTTP only and the CSS has no way of knowing what protocol will hit a VIP prior to trying to address it as HTTP. Your issue is actually a bit clearer than it is initially led to be - you can still use 2 different rules by using the configuration below.
However, you might be headed for a headache if you don't implicitly control the client's actions. By default, browsers don't generally send cookies cross-protocol and definitely not cross-domain. Use something like httpwatch or iewatch to check out the headers your client sends to your site. Make sure when the 200ok arrives with the set-cookie that the client sends that cookie in all preceeding packets that are HTTP and HTTPS both.
service tomcat1
string "tomcat1"
ip address x.x.x.x
active
service tomcat2
string "tomcat2"
ip address x.x.x.x
active
owner me
content sticky9001
vip address x.x.x.x
protocol tcp
url "/*"
port 9001
add service tomcat-1
add service tomcat-2
advanced-balance arrowpoint-cookie
active
content sticky9002
vip address x.x.x.x
protocol tcp
url "/*"
port 9002
add service tomcat-1
add service tomcat-2
advanced-balance arrowpoint-cookie
active
With this configuration, the CSS will use the "string" as the cookie value. So if the client were to recieve set-cookie: ArrowpointCookie=tomcat1, it should use it for either rule, and end up on tomcat1 accessing either VIP.

ACE 4710- Global Site load-balancing
Does the 4710 have a feature like global site load balancing like the CSS?
We have a site that will have 2 ISPs but we don't have our own block of IP addresses to advertise so we would need to use the ISPs IP blocks. We've had issues in the past advertising one ISPs IP block out another ISP so I was wondering if there was a way we could configure the ACE similar to the way the CSS did global site load balancing. Basically have the ACE act as a DNS server and respond back with the IP address of whichever ISP we wanted the end user to come in on and use a probe to ping the ISPs remote WAN IP to verify the circuit is passing traffic and resolve the correct IP if it's not.
ThanksACE does not have DNS server functionality.
And these methods are not supported on the CSS anymore.
The solution we offer is to install a Cisco GSS (Global Site Selector) which can interact with the ACE or CSS or CSM to determine which vip is up or down.

CSS 11501 Load Balancing with X-forwarded-for
Hi,
We have a pair of CSS 11501,
Currently it is using source ip for load balancing and 5 servers as backend , however we have users loggin in using http and based on its source IP (ISP PROXY) , it is forwarded to SERVER A.
However, we have a SSL page and when the client switches over to SSL , it is forwarded to SERVER B/C/D/E based on its source IP ( REAL CLIENT IP) .
This will cause the user to be terminated as the 5 servers are independent and not running in a cluster.
Is there any way that we can use the X-Forwarded-For address to load balance so that when users loging , they are sent to SERVER A (Based on X-Forwarded-For Header IP which translate to REAL CLIENT IP).
This way we are able to also send it back to the same server when it uses SSL.
I believe that we should be able to load balance using X-Forwarded-For IP or to rewrite the X-Forwarded-For IP into client source IP
RegardsHi,
Unfortunately CSS does not support X-Forwarded-For, and even if CSS supports that, this wont work if you are not using SSL termination.
One option that you can use here, is using SSL termination, so you can manage the SSL traffic on HTTP on the CSS, in this way you can use the same HTTP content rule which is the one currently working.
In summary, you will have an SSL content rule that will decrypt the traffic, and this one will use the same content rule that already exist for HTTP, in case that the server is the one doing the redirect to SSL, but this is something that requires testing since depending on the redirect behavior we might have a redirect loop, but without details it is kind of hard to confirm that you will face this with this option.
Another option, which is less complex, is to use a portless content rule, so this content rule will match port 443 and 80 at the same time, and using sticky or balance based on source IP, you will get the same result with less config. The downside is the troubleshooting, but in this way you will have what you want.
content HTTP-HTTPS
vip address 10.198.44.70
advanced-balance sticky-srcip
add service server1
add service server2
add service server3
add service server4
add service server5
protocol tcp
active
Here the content rule is not looking for the destination port, it is just looking for the source IP, and HTTP and HTTPS will end all the time on the same server.
Thanks,

Hi,
i have configured to load balancing the http traffic to 2 servers, servers have the ip address 10.10.50.100 and 10.10.50.101 resp and the vip is 10.10.46.10
iam not able to access the http through the vip, can some one help on this
am i required to the nating, below is the connectivity
User -->SW->ASA->CSS->SW->server1 & server2
iam not able to access the server through vip
Please help
Thanks
Ravi
RaviWhat is the default gateway defined on Servers?
Is it CSS circuit IP or the ASA?
How is CSS conected? Are there diff vlans connected to servers and ASA? Or CSS is connected to the Switch in one arm mode?
You need to make sure that the return traffic from Servers should pass through the CSS.

Problem with WLIOTimeoutSecs in weblogic and apche CSS load balancer
Hi,
We are using Weblogic 11g, apache 2.2 and CSS load balancer for load balancing.
we have huge reports which take minutes to generate and hence we need higher value for WLIOTimeoutSecs. This works fine when we use server url but WLIOTimeoutSecs is not working when we use CSS load balancer.
We checked with our load balancing team they said CSS load balancer will not repost the request.
Here is the plugin configuration
<Location /*****>
SetHandler weblogic-handler
PathTrim /
WebLogicHost 'serevrip'
WebLogicPort 'port'
WLIOTimeoutSecs 3600
Idempotent OFF
WLProxySSL ON
DefaultFileName /***/***/index.jsp
Debug On
WLLogFile /***/***/***/***.log
</Location>
Could some please help me on this.
Thanks in advance
Regards,
VenkatHi Tarun,
The problem occurs when the SSL is enabled on apache. If I access the same URL over HTTP, the parameter WLIOTimeOut works fine.
Also I observed that, none of the parameters are getting applied to the plugin. I had switched on 'DebugConfigInfo'. With this the HTTP URL with ?__WebLogicBridgeConfig as query parameter returned the complete configuration. However when accessed with HTTPS the server did not return the configuration.
Is there a specific configuration to be applied when apache is used with SSL?
Thanks for your help,

Using a single CSS to load balance multiple services
Is it possible to use a single CSS to load balance 3 different services (server farm) ? That mean the CSS need to advertise 3 VIP
I'm thinking of two scenarios:
1 - configure the CSS to use 4 interfaces: 1 to public, 3 to private (each interface will plug-in to a different vlan/server farm)
2 - configure the CSS to use 2 interfaces: 1 to public, 1 to private (all 3 server farms are in the same vlan)
Will both scenarios work ?
Thanks
--Phillip.Hi Phillip,
both scenarios will work. One CSS can certainly manage more than 3 services! You can even use just one VIP for all traffic, then just create the proper rules to send specific traffic to the corresponding service(s). No need for 3 VIPs.
