Log on failed

I am using VS.NET 2008, .NET 3.5SP1, and a Crystal 2008 30-day demo I downloaded a few days ago, and the 'Pull' method for a report design. 
I am trying to change the ODBC connection string of a report at runtime, I have tried a few approaches and read through more forums and threads than I care to count about people experiencing similar issues, some on this forum, some not. 
I was defeated myself by this exact issue about a year ago but at the time I found a solution using an older component called CRAXDDRT.DLL.  Well, this CRAXDDRT.DLL solution of mine has fallen apart for another seemingly unrelated reason, and my company has decided we need a long overdue upgrade. 
So, now equipped with the newer Crystal 2008, new viewer controls in .NET, it seems I am still defeated by exactly the same problem I was previously in that I cannot change a connection string at runtime. 
I'll post what I have eventually come up with in the next response, I can't seem to get code formatting to work on this one, seems grouchy about size...

This InProc RAS version appears to be working, is it only available with a Crystal 2008 purchase?
