Logic 8 seems not be using both cores??

I've been a lot of System Overload messages so I started monitoring the CPU usage and I've noticed that Logic is only using one core. When that maxes out I get the message. I've done all the things I should be doing (freezing tracks, raising the I/O buffer size etc...) but I dont seem to be getting both cores...any thoughts?
Here's my system:
Dual 2GHz G5 w/6GB RAM, 10.5.8.

Hi,
Logic distributes different "tasks" to both CPU's. Usually, one Channelstrip goes to one CPU. Logic can't split one Channelstrip to go to different CPU's.
Solution:
If you have a Channelstrip overloaded with plugins, set the channelstrip's output to a BUS. Use the resulting AUX channelstrip to distribute the plugin chain over both the main and the AUX channelstrip.
Signal flow: Main channelstrip -> AUX channelstrip -> Out 1-2
Logic can and usually will distribute the CPU power to both strips.
Another thing: If you are not using a software instrument, switch to an empty audio track in the arrange window while playing back your project. Active (armed) software tracks are using more CPU ressources because Logic waits for your live MIDI input.

  • Using both cores?

i have an early 2008 MBP, obviously they have 1 processor and 2 cores, what program can i get that shows that an application is using both cores? or do they always use all cores? and just (if i had multiple processors) only use the amount of processors they were designed to use?
    thanks for reading

Activity is generally distributed across both cores (different 'threads' running on each core). Install iStat Menus - that can show a graphic in your menu bar with 'thermometer' or history graphs showing the two cores separately.

  • My Logic 9 Pro is only using a core from my minimac (of 4 cores)

    Hi, friends!
I´m using Logic 9 Pro, and i have a problem: It is only using one of the 4 cores of my computer (Mini mac).
    Can anybody help me?
    Thanks!!

       Hi.
i am having the same problem. Working with a 12 cores Mac pro, logic 9.1.8 and vep 5(10 instances with kontakt instruments, 16 in each one).  only one of the cores is working, sometimes picking, and i am trying to do the aux process as ErikSimon said in his post, but with no success. is there another alternative to this?
      help please!!

  • How do I use 2 Core Audio devices at the same time in Logic w/out switching

Hello, I use the Aardvark Direct Mix usb3 as my audio interface for mic and guitar. I just upgraded to Logic Pro 7 today and was hoping someone could tell me how I could use the Built-in Audio Core Audio driver along with the Direct Mix USB Core Audio Driver at the same time without having to switch Core Audio Driver's and than rebooting Logic. It is very frustrating doing that as well as not being able to hear my Logic audio during playback/record mode when I am trying to record via the USB3. WHat can I do? Thanks! If ther are both core audio, why can I not just use both of them at the same time? Why must a switch back and forth? Thanks!
    [email protected]

THanks everyone! awsome article! Thanks for posting it, nh!
The weird thing is, once I go up to the Menu and select Open Aggregate Device Editor in the AUDIO/MIDI setup utility and try to add a new Aggregate Device setup (step # 6 from the link), the only audio device available is the "Built-in Audio". What's weird is when I have the main Audio MIDI Setup utility open, every single drop-down menu/tab has the "Direct Mix USB 3 1.0.9.1" device right beneath the "Built-in Audio" option. To me that says that the core audio device is indeed recognized by my computer (obviously since I can record with it using Logic). Can anyone help me with this one? Any suggestions?
Not that it should matter but, the hardware audio interface that I am using is made by the no-longer-existant company once known as Aardvark. I actually had to purchase a third party Core Audio driver just to have it recognized by OS X.
This is the website where I purchased my audio driver :
    http://www.usb-audio.com/
A little more on how this device and it's core audio driver function within Logic . . . (Hopefully this might clarify something I may be screwing up) . . .
I launch Logic with its default Built-in Audio which allows playback of audio from the app. I than go up to Audio Hardware and Drivers and than drop the flip down Driver menu down to the second option, "Direct Mix USB 3 1.0.9.1." Logic than prompts me that I should try to (re)launch Logic Pro to load the appropriate CoreAudio.. I do that. Now I am ready to record guitar through the Direct Mix USB3, I just can't hear anything (unless I use head phones as an output from the Direct Mix).
Anyway, you all probably already knew what I meant so explaining that was pointless. But my question is, if the Driver is obviously recognized by my comp in both the Audio MIDI Setup and in Logic, than why won't the Direct Mix device show up as a possibility for setting up an aggregate device? Any suggestions? Thanks!

  • QT Pro nor iSquint will export using both CPUs - MacBook Pro

    Hello!
I've got a few videos (of various codecs) that I want to export for my iPod, at the high-res 640x480 level. Because I want more control over export settings than iTunes gives, I usually export with Quicktime Pro, or sometimes iSquint, depending on the quality I want and the codecs used.
Exporting takes a lot of time - as it does on any computer. Unfortunately, both Quicktime and iSquint seem to refuse to export using both CPU cores in my 2.2 Ghz MacBook Pro. They both suck down the entire power of one core, but the other sits idle. This greatly increases the export time, which is annoying when I've got a lot of videos to convert.
Oddly enough, when I tried exporting said source movies to a DVD via iDVD, it used both cores. In other words, QT is actually capable of using 2 cores to export videos in iDVD, but not via QT Pro itself - very very odd.
Is this a "feature" of the program - that is, QT Pro does not support dual-core encoding except through other programs - or some bug? Since iSquint does the same thing, I'm fairly sure the problem does not actually lie with Quicktime as iSquint uses the FFmpeg codecs to convert videos.
Any ideas what the problem is, and how to work around it? If it's a bug in the software, I can reinstall said application.
    -Dan

The "grey curtain" indicates a kernal panic. KPs are usually the result of hardware based problems or unrecoverable software issues that are system wide. I say system wide because OSX is designed to contain a balky program and will allow you to kill the program without affecting the OS.
Unplug all external devices except the keyboard and mouse and try it.
    Does it work reliably?
    • If so, start connecting your externals one by one until you find the one that causes issues.
    • if not, you can try a full erase and reinstall of the software and OS. This may help.
If not, it is likely that you have a hardware issue that will need to be addressed by a certified repair technician.
    good luck.

  • Quicktime X only uses one core on a C2D

On my mac mini C2D activity monitor shows that quicktime X refuses to use more then one core which makes hd movies look very laggy and bad. What can I do to make it use both cores?

QuickTime itself limits to a single processor/core in most cases.
Worst is that quicktime is slow to render movies.
I hope Apple will rewrite quicktime so it supports Open CL and Grand Central Dispatch.
    Kind Regards

  • World of Warcraft now using two cores?

    Hello everyone,
I've been running WoW on my quad box for a while now. And every time I would play, it would only use up one core. I just noticed today that it's using two cores. Has anyone else noticed the same? I'm wondering if it's actually using both cores for game play, or if this is just a bug. I'm running the latest WoW with the BC expansion and wine-0.9.41 since 0.9.44-1 doesn't play right with WoW.

Google search for 'multicore world of warcraft' and you will get a happy surprise.
    Welcome to Arch!

  • Logic not using multiple cores?

I have a project that seems to be burning out my CPU. The music starts distorting and crackling, and I've noticed that the little CPU indicator is hitting the top of the chart. But, I also have the iStat monitor installed, and the CPU never reads as going above 50%.
I have a dual core intel, is it possible that Logic is using only one core?

    I have the same problem.
On a i7 iMac with 16 gigs of ram. Logic is only using one core no matter what settings I use (auto, 8 or 4), and even using the bus rerouting trick the plugins still run on the same core. That core create glitch when it reaches 100%, but really only 25% of my iMac is used.
Way to get us spending money, pay 3000$ for a computer that is 4 times faster than the previous one, but then your limited to 25% of what you paid for.

  • I have 12 core with Quatro 4000 and 5770, I want to use dual monitor setup, monitors are NEC with Spectraview-II.  How do I connect?  4000 only has 1 Display Port and 1 DVI.  5770 has 2 of each, if I use both 5770 Display Ports, does the 4000 contribute?

I just bought a 12 core with Quatro 4000 and 5770, I want to use dual monitor setup, monitors are NEC with Spectraview-II.  How do I connect?  4000 only has 1 Display Port and 1 DVI.  5770 has 2 of each, if I use both 5770 Display Ports, does the 4000 contribute any work at all?  I read where on a PC they would work together, but on a MAC they do not.
I read that Display Port has higher band width than DVI, NEC monitors for best performance they recommend using DIsplay Port.
When I was setting this up I looked at a Nvidia Quadro 4000, unfortunately it was for PC, it had 2 Display Ports, in the Mac version they reduce it to one.  I did not think there could be a difference.
Mainly want to use it for CS6 and LR4.
    How to proceed???
I do not want to use the Quadro 4000 for both, that would not optimize both monitors, one DP and 1 DVI.  Using just the 5770 would work but I do not think the 4000 would be doing anything, and the 5770 has been replaced by the 5870.more bandwidth.
Any ideas, I am a Mac newbie, have not ever tried a Mac Pro, just bought off ebay and now I have these problems.
As a last resort I could sell both and get a 5870.  That would work, I'm sure of that, it's just that I wanted the better graphics card.
    Thanks,
    Bill

    The Hatter,
I am a novice at Mac so I read all I can.  From what I understand the NEC monitors I bought require Display Port for their maximum performance.  The GTX 680 only has DVI outputs.  Difference from what I understand is larger bandwidth with the DP.
You said I have the 4000 for CUDA.  I am not all that familiar with CUDA and when I do read about it I do not understand it.
A concern I have is, that if I connect the 2 high end NEC monitors via the 5770, using it's 2 Display Ports I would have nothing connected to the 4000.  Is the 4000 doing anything with nothing connected?  I read where in a PC system the 2 cards would interact but in a Mac system they do not.
Bottom line, as I see it, the 4000 will not be useful at all to me, since I want a dual monitor set-up.
So far the 5870 seems the best choice, higher band width than the 5770, and it has 2 Display Ports to optimize the NEC monitors.
I'm not sure how fine I am splitting hairs, nor do I know how important those hairs are.  I am just trying to set up a really fast reliable system that will mainly be used for CS6 and LR4.  Those NEC monitors are supposed to be top notch.

  • Is Logic 8 not optimized for dual core processing duties ?

Running MacBook Pro 2.4 ghz, 2 gig Ram 200 gig HD external eSATA or FW 800. No other apps running.
I am consistently seeing Logic 8 use ALL of the first core and barely tough the other - sometimes freezing up - saying that the CPU(s?) can not handle the audio. Why do I not see the other core "bailing water" for the first core ? Isn't this the purpose of dual core ?. It is like one guy is lifting a 150lb sac and his partner is sitting there eating lunch - and the "team"'s efforts fail.
Is Logic itself not optimized for dual core processing duties ?

I get beachballs just logging in. No apps - then Safari is also very buggy. I have had to "pull the battery out" more times than I would like to recount.
That sounds very suspect, like there is something wrong with the hardware or your OS install. I have a MBP 2.33 and have none of the Logic or other system problems you describe. Have you looked at your System Profiler to make sure both sticks of Ram are being recognized? If one stick is bad and you're only utilizing 1 gig, that would cause slow downs and spiny beachball with Leopard and with Logic. Try running hardware test from your system disks, and also try running Rember, a small app that will run a series of read/write tests on the Ram, incase one stick has a bad sector.
If that comes up with nothing, I'd try setting up a new user, logging in to that user, and seeing if you're having the same slow down problems with Leopard, Safari, Logic, etc. If not, then you have some corrupt files in your User system somewhere. Whether that works or not, the next step would be to back up all of your data and do an Erase and Install.
Finally, if you have specific problems that you can recreate, you could also take the machine to Apple if you still have a warranty, and perhaps they can figure out your performance issues.
    Good Luck!

  • AE CS5 is not using Multiple Cores

I have a six core Intel I7 980X machine which i've got running at over 4GHz, yet AE is completely not making use of this speed.
I've turned on "Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously", and set it to use all cores (it detects 12 because of hyper threading on the I7 CPU's) and this does nothing for both the Preview window/working area or when actually rendering a video in the Render Queue. It uses about 9% at most of my CPU, that's not even 2 full cores.
I also have two SSD drives in RAID 0, they're Crucial C300 SSD's, pretty much the fastest you can get, infinitely faster than any Hard Drive, yet again... not making use of these it seems. I also have 12GB DDR3 running at 2GHz, i've set AE to use 9GB of it, as much as it will allow.... yet i cant even work with HD 1080p material and get near to smooth performance or even play it smoothly with or without effects applied, atleast with the video/viewer window near to 1080p size. Really pathetic. Premiere Pro on the other hard does a much better job but still dont fully make use of the speed and cores available. Adobe Media Encoder also does not use all cores.
Other software and even games make way better use of these cores than Adobe software seems to.
I've got two ATI 5870 graphics cards in Crossfire mode, they have the latest drivers. Performance is like this on any driver version though, but as far as i know none of this software makes use of the GPU's like it does with certain CUDA based Nvidia cards. I'd still like it to actually make use of my other hardware though.
I'm most bothered about AE, so any ideas why AE CS5 is [edited] so badly?
    This is on Win7 x64.
    Thanks for your help!

I've atleast made the renderer work a little faster by ticking "Enable OpenGL" in the Render Settings, and increasing the amount of used graphics card RAM to 800MB.
I also tried doing what those Blog posts said in the FAQ links - It has not helped much, if at all. So i tried a few different other RAM settings too, which didn't really help.
Then i put the video files on my SSD drives, and that helped a little. But not much difference still overall, very unimpressed with AE CS5 performance. It's took me hours to put together a 1min 30secs video that has 6 video files in total with some lens blur and colour grading effects applied, that's just silly, even for often slow Adobe software.
Cant see this happening but i'd like it if Adobe almost completely focus on performance for CS6 and hardly add any new features. While also making use of the speed of Solid State Drives and having GPU's also made use of more. I mean my SSD's are capable of reading around 600MB/sec and doing 40,000 I/O's per second but none of this is being made use of.

  • 648 Max - Identifying but not using both RAM modules

    Hi!
I'm totally new here, just stumbled across this forum while googling for a solution to my problem, so please excuse my lack of proper terminology if that should occur.
I have the following system (data obtained from Everest 2.20 and own brain):
P4 2,80 GHz, no OC, no HT
    2x Crucial PC2700 DDR-DIMM 1024MB 2,5-3-3-7 @ 166 MHz
    MSI 648Max (MS-6585)
PowerColor Radeon X1950Pro AGP 256MB GDDR3, no OC
    Thermaltake Toughpower 850W Modular
    Hitachi Deskstar T7K250 160GB IDE
BIOS (this is my weak spot...) Everest says BIOS type AMI, dated 28/1/2003, no info other than that
WinXP Home SP3 + all updates AFAIK
In general, the system is originally ready-built Fujitsu-Siemens system from 2002 (i think), but heavily modified by me (RAM upgrade, HDD upgrade, several GPU and PS upgrades).
My problem is that the computer only occasionally uses both RAMs (i.e. showing 2,00GB RAM in My Computer's properties). More often than not, however, it only shows 1,00GB RAM. AFAIK this problem is pretty recent, and did not occur when the RAM was new and installed by me. I have tried to systematically testing the two different RAM modules separately in each of the three DIMM slots, and the computer booted and ran Windows desktop at idle without problems in all configurations. I therefore dismissed the possibility of both MB and RAM failure, and reinstalled both modules in DIMM 1 & 2, where they have always been located. The computer ran with 2,00GB of RAM for a day, then reverted back to only 1,00GB the next morning. Tried moving the RAM in DIMM 2 to DIMM 3, and the computer ran another day on 2,00GB. However, this morning it was back to 1,00GB again.
Through all this, Everest 2.20 has always detected both RAMs in the correct slots, but have displayed 1024 and 2048MB memory on the System Summary page. Rebooting the computer without dismantling it and fiddling with the modules does apparently not change the usable amount of RAM back to 2,00GB when stuck at 1,00GB.
Anybody know what the issue might be (since none of the components seem to be faulty by themselves) and how to solve it? Please keep in mind that my BIOS skills are shoddy at best (but successfully flashed the BIOS once by help of an official guide, no stability issues after the upgrade), so detailed instructions regarding that might be a bit over my head. The same goes for overclocking or manually adjusting any voltages or freqs, which I've never tried.
    Thanks in advance!
EDIT: Apparently a total power-off reboot (power down, PS power switch off, push and hold power button till lights go out, switch back on, power up) seems to reset the RAM to the correct amount of 2GB. Any clues?

The voltage to the memory might need to be raised one notch.  That adjustment is done in the bios.
You can download the motherboard manual from this link.  http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=downloadfile&dno=3576&type=manual
Section 3 page 27 thru 28 cover the adjustment of the memory voltage.
This is for a retail motherboard.  I do not know if your motherboard has this in its bios.  It is in a section under Frequency/Voltage Control

  • Can't I stop the HOG Flash from Firefox? I use FlashBlock but a constant fight. Often both cores maxed at 100%,laptop very slow until I kill Flash in Tsk Mangr

Flash is the problem. It often maxes both cores of my dual core processor and brings processing virtually to a halt.
Originally, I killed flash in Task Manager whenever i heard my fan come on and also noticed slow system response. This was very distracting and took a lot of time.
Then I installed FlashBlock, but it doesn't stop Flash unless you tell it for each and every website.
When reading news, and opening a link, I will hear the fan start, so i click the block button/icon in Firefox to block the site from using flash. Some sites don't launch with the FlashBlock icon. I have to use the manual kill option for them. This extremely frustrating. I understand why Steve Jobs hated Flash.
I don't like Apple's money-sucking wallet-leach behavior, so I use WinTel and live with the frustrations of which this is the biggest. HTML5 supposedly is the solution, but site builders use flash.
FireFox needs a flash control switch built in the browser to give control of Flash - block/ask, etc. functionality.

By the way, Firefox does have a Click-to-Play feature you can use for Flash. That will delay Flash from starting on a page until you approve it. However, the approval is per site, I believe, so you may need an add-on to control it per page.
To set "Ask to Activate", open the Add-ons page using either:
    * Ctrl+Shift+a
    * orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
In the left column, click Plugins. Look for "Shockwave Flash" and change "Always Activate" to "Ask to Activate".
When you visit a site that wants to use the Flash, you should see a notification icon in the address bar and one of the following: a link in a black rectangle in the page or an infobar sliding down between the toolbar area and the page.
Not a solution, but hopefully will help a bit.

  • Since being in Mexico both my iPad and iPhone seem to be using up their batteries more quickly.  Any thoughts on why that might be?

since being in Mexico both my iPad and iPhone seem to be using up their batteries more quickly.  Any thoughts on why that might be?

    Did they drink the water?
Using the battery level meter in this manner is comparable to using your car's fuel gauge to calculate miles per gallon. The only thing that matters is the total amount of operating time from full charge to auto-shutdown.
Use the wall-mount charger that came with the iPad or another 10W/12W Apple charger and, one at a time, charge both units overnight.  Do NOT use an iPod/iPhone (5W) charger.  Do NOT use a computer's USB port.  Then, operate it normally until auto shut-down (ignore any low level alerts that may appear).  An irony is that doing that test to determine the total operating time is also the procedure necessary to calibrate the battery level meter.
I'm not claiming that you do not have a problem.  I am stating, however, that we don't yet know.  If the above test does, in fact, indicate a problem, read this.
    Also, according to Apple:
    Use Your iPad Regularly
For proper reporting of the battery’s state of charge, be sure to go through at least one charge cycle per month (charging the battery to 100% and then completely running it down).
Elsewhere, Apple elaborates and explains that two half-discharges (or four quarter-discharges, etc.) equals one full discharge.
