Login Item keeps returning

Hi There.
I have read may similar posts, but the solutions have not worked.
Problem: NetNewsWire returns to the "Login Items" all by itself, even after manually removing it from the Accounts -> Login Items.
Things I have already tried:
1) Manually removing it from System Preferences > Accounts > Login Items. Outcome: It removes from the list, but after loging out/in or restarting, it returns to the list.
2) Deleting ~/library/Preferences/com.apple.loginitems.plist and ~/Library/Preferences/loginwindow.plist
Outcome: The Login Item list in the System Preferences > Accounts is emptied, but after log out/in the list reappears, restoring NetNewsWire as well as several other things.
3) Right-Clicking the Dock icon and de-delecting "Open at Login" which is always checked.
Outcome: After un-checing this, and logging out/in. The app still launches and the setting in again checked in the dock menu.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Oh, by the way, this is on a family member's MacBook, 10.5.x

Actually, I did further tests and found the following: there are several apps set to launch at start up, and removing any of them had the same effect as NetNewsWire.
Here's how I solved the problem: after deleting all of the login items and verifying that System Preferences > Users > Login Items was empty, I went to ~/library/preferences and deleted loginwindow.plist. Then I used text edit to make a new blank file of the same name. I locked this file and put it in the preferences folder where it should go. I then tested to make sure that any login items added did not actually stick due to the fact the pref was locked. This worked, and nothing could be added or removed at all. I logged out and in and confirmed it again. My locked dummy file was still in place. Next, I removed the locked dummy file and went back to the login items and added a couple of items as a test. I logged out and in and just those two things opened. I removed them and verified that they also stayed deleted.
Now the loginwindow.plist seems to be working normally. Something seems to have been restoring the file after I made changes, or perhaps the file was corrupt and unwriteable to begin with.

  • HT204347 I CAN'T KEEP MY MACBOOK PRO FROM SHOWING APPLEMAIL WHEN I START UP.  I HAVE GONE TO SYSTEM PREFERENCES, USERS AND GROUPS, AND THERE ARE NO LOGIN ITEMS LISTED. WHAT DO I DO?ERENCESS,

I cannot keep my computer from showing applemail mailboxes when I start up. When I go to system preferences, users and groups, login items nothing is listed.  If I try listing mail and then restarting and deleting it, that does not work.  What to do next?

    System Preference > General
At the bottom of the section "Number of recent items"
uncheck the box next to "Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps".
    Best.

  • Ituneshelper keeps appearing on login items

I keep unchecking ituneshelper in my users and groups, login items, but for some reason it keeps reapperaing and I don't know why. I don't want it to keep appearing on my login items.

I see, OK try making the change and then restarting in Safe Mode. This will clear some caches, it is possible one if corrupt. To restart in Safe Mode hold down the Shift Key when you hear the startup tone until a progress bar appears and let the machine boot. Then restart normally and test. If that does not take care of it look in the apps preferences and see if there is anything about launching on startup. If there is nothing there look for the app on the Dock and right click and ensure it's not set to launch on start up. Finally if that does not do it you may need to remove teh apps Plist file as it may be corrupt.

  • After update Firefox keeps returning a "Gone The requested resource /administrator/index.php is no longer available" reponse when trying to access joomla login

After automatic update to 32.2 (then I tried to update to 33.0 beta with no improvement) Firefox keeps returning a "Gone The requested resource /administrator/index.php is no longer available" reponse when trying to access joomla login. The problem is there even when I fill manually the fileds "user" and "password" in the joomla admin login page. The problem appears in different sites on different servers, and do not occurr using Google Chrome. It's clearly a Firefox issue. Could you please give me some ideas on how to solve ?

    Works here.

  • Anyone heard of a login item called 'sharkMonitor'?

    Hi all,
I wonder if you can help. Google has offered nothing on this front.
I opened System Pref > Users/Accounts > Login Items in order to remove pesky Spotify from opening each time I start up.
Whilst there, I noticed I have an item called 'sharkMonitor', an Application in my login items.
Does anyone recognise that as something I should keep, or is it sinister?
As I say, I have googled, and nothing comes up.
I'm running 10.7.4 on a MBP 15" Core 2 Duo 2.16 GHz if that makes any difference.
Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

Brilliant - thank you BT! Doesn't look like it's anything as sinister as its name might have suggested. Since I have no recollection of a Griffin radio attachment, 'll safely delete that now.
Well found, I couldn't locate anything from a sharkMonitor search.
    Thanks

  • Unable to delete Login Items - they come back (can't add either)

I have a couple of items listed in my Login Items from applications no longer there but every time I go back into System Preferences they are still there. I can see that they can't be found as they show as kind:Unknown rather than application.
Similarly I tried to add an application and while it shows on exit of system preferences it always reverts to the same state next time I look.

I'm not sure about "Leopard", but in "Tiger", "login items" could be configured from at least four different places, but the ones that appear in the "Accounts" pref pane were the ones listed in the user's "~/Library/Preferences/loginwindow.plist" file.
The symptom of removed "login items" returning could have other causes, but combined with the inability to persistently add your own new ones suggests that that file may be corrupt or have become locked in some way. Try removing it, then reconfiguring your "login items".

  • Already sent items keeps coming back as sent items in Mail

already sent items keeps coming back as sent items in Mail

These are probably not sent from your account. The spammer has just ''borrowed ''your email address and is using it as the return address of the junk they are sending. If they were coming from your account they would be in the Sent folder.
They have your address. There is not much you can do about it now. They will get bored with you and move on soon.
Google '''email backscatter''' to learn more about what is going on.
FYI: People posting email addresses in an open forum like you did in your example is exactly how spammers get their victims. That is not a very good idea if you want to protect your personal info.
I suggest that you edit your post and remove your example. It is of no help and does more harm than good.

  • SIMBL Agent: Why is it in the login items settings?

SIMBL Agent: Why is it in the login items settings?
I don't remember to install it.
Is it safe to unmark or remove it?

Uninstall "SIMBL" or "EasySIMBL" as follows. Back up all data before making any changes.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it, then copy the text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    /Library
    In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V, then press return. A folder will open. From that folder, delete the items listed below (some may be absent.) You may be prompted for your administrator login password.
              Application Support/SIMBL
              InputManagers/SIMBL
              LaunchAgents/net.culater.SIMBL.Agent.plist
              LaunchAgents/net.infinite-labs.SIMBLEnablerForSandboxedApps.plist
              ScriptingAdditions/EasySIMBL.osax
              ScriptingAdditions/SIMBL.osax
Log out and log back in. There may also be an item named "EasySIMBL" in the Applications folder. Delete it, if so.
Make sure you never reinstall any variant of SIMBL. It’s likely to come bundled with another third-party system modfication that depends on it. If you want trouble-free computing, avoid software that makes miraculous changes to other software, especially built-in applications. The only real exception to that rule is Safari extensions, which are mostly safe, and are easy to get rid of when they don’t work. SIMBL and its dependents are not Safari extensions.

  • Login Items is this normal?

    http://tinypic.com/r/2drx576/7
Upon updating to lion my user account now shows up in the menu bar. I clicked on "login window" and I just found this in my login items in system preferences. Why is iTunes helper automatically set to open when I log in? I have never changed these preferences. Also why do half of them have the yellow triangle next to them indicating the location of the item is unknown. I can understand why growl, mobile mouse server, dropbox and air video server are set to open when I log in but the rest just seems a bit weird.

Preferences --> Users & Groups --> Click the lock to make changes
Select the Current User --> Click Login Options
To add the Fast User Switching entry from your OS X Menu Bar, tick the check mark in the box next to the Show fast user switching menu as option.
If you would like to keep the Fast User Switching feature in your Menu Bar, but not have it take up quite so much space, place a check in the box next to the option labelled Show fast user switching menu as to make sure it’s enabled, and then select Icon from the pull-down menu.

  • Losing Login Items

I have been having problems when I will shutdown into Boot Camp or just normal shutdown and then reboot my login items have been deleted from System Preferences so I have to reenter them all. It is very annoying as I have my system setup how I like it and I have to remember everything it was set to.
This happens very often, once every week or so.

Try deleting the /Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginitems.plist file. Reenter your desired Login Items in Accounts preferences. See if that fixes the problem.
And, just as a precaution do the following:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.2 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (5.x.x for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

  • Login item on managed account

    Hi all -
On our iMac running leopard, we'd like the ability to keep a program (VOIP phone program) running all the time regardless of which user is logged in. I figured out how to add the item to the Login Items for the Admin account (me), but there is no option to do the same for our daughter's login (a managed account). I tried accessing it through Parental Controls and even changin her account to Standard, but no luck.
I've scoured the forum and the web to no avail...any solutions out there?

what do you mean? you add programs to login items in the same way on all accounts, including parental controlled accounts. log into that account and start system preferences. go to accounts->login items and add whatever you need to add there.

  • Very weird. My login.keychain keeps running away...

I am about to throw my iBook off my balcony and buy a PC.
My login.keychain keeps disappearing. I don't know why.
When I open the keychain it appears as a grey square instead of a padlock (system ones are fine). So I have 5 times repaired it. Which fixes the problem but not for long. Sometimes I will open an application (last time was Microsoft Messenger) and all of a sudden my dock will lose its prefs and stop hiding and my exposé corners stop working.
If I log out, other trouble happens (locale info, bookmarks, iTunes library, etc. go missing).
I know my passwords are lost, I just want to stop this from happening again.
    Anyone?

OK, I spoke too soon. It's ALMOST fixed, but there's still one niggling litte problem.
When I start up my computer, it first asks me to log in (as it should).
Then, after it begins to load everything, the following message pops up.
"Mac OS wants to use the "myname logins" keychain. Please enter the keychain password"
I enter it and that's the end of the problem until the next time I start up the computer. This is a huge improvement to what it was previously doing, but I'd like to fix that, too.
I am wondering if it's related to a problem with the configuration of my login keychains.
When I open KeyChain Access, it shows 2 login keychains, one called "login" and the other "myname logins" (I added the second one to solve the problem at the beginning of this topic - April 22 above).
The one OS X asks for is myname logins.
Myname logins contains passwords for my LAN, but nothing for the airport itself.
The "Login" keychain contains passwords for my airport/time capsule.  But there are 8 different entries for it, 4 of them with the same "Date modified" and 4 more with a second "Date modified".
This login keychain also contains many obsolete entries for ISPs I no longer use, and for routers I used once or twice in clients' offices several years ago.
    So, 5 questions.
Can I remove all these obsolete keychain items?
Can I remove some of the duplicate items?
Should I consolidate these to one keychain or should I leave them separate?
If I should consolidate them, how do I do it?
Will consolidating them solve my problem with OS X asking for my keychain login password when my configuration is loading?
    Thanks.

  • Unknown (to me) login items

In my user account login items, I have two programs listed, and I don't recognize them. Can anyone tell me what they are?
    ScreenCapture

I ran a search on Google but did not see definitive answers. If these aren't needed, I see no reason to keep them loading.

  • Login itmes keep coming back

Firefox and Thunderbird apps keep appearing in the "login items" on my mac. So that they start up when the computer starts. I keep removing (deleting) them but they won't stay gone. I'm highlighting them with a check in the check box and then hitting the minus button below.

Have you tried it without the checkbox marked? Just Highlight and then the minus button?
